[Music] hi welcome to watch it played my name is Rodney Smith and in this video we're going to learn the two to four player game the quacks of Clinton bog which is my attempt at pronouncing the original German name this was designed by both gang wash and published by North Star Games who helped sponsor this video it's time for the annual Bazaar in the city of Medellin bog and as a local quack surgeon you're keen to show off your latest potions which are usually made by just tossing a variety of questionable ingredients in a pot and selling it off is the latest miracle cure no harm there unless it explodes but don't worry about that instead join me at the table let's learn how to play to set up place the scoring track in the middle of the table and then put this flame token on to the one space right here nearby is set this orange and black book the black one is double-sided and you'll place it with the side face-up that shows the correct number of players here in this video we'll be setting up for two players so we'll place it on this side there are more double-sided ingredient books two in each of the other colors and these are organized in two sets by the number of bookmarks showing on the bottom either 1 2 3 or 4 for your first game they recommend using the set that just shows a single bookmark so we'll return the rest to the box now place the green blue and red books next to the orange and black ones you put out earlier setting the yellow and purple ones to decide for now these will come into play later but next put the matching colored ingredient chips by the related books now I have these organized into containers I own which are not included in the game but nearby also put out this pile of white chips which do not have an ingredient book now give each player one of these boards with their pot a bag and a scoring token seal tile droplet rat stone and flask in their chosen color the pot board is double sided but this side is used in a variant that we'll discuss later next place your seal token onto the matching space for here on the scoring board with your scoring token on top and near the board place the bonus die and these gems and then have each player take a single gem to put on their board here place your droplet on to the zero space of your pot and set your flask with its full side up here and your rat stone in the bowl beside it now following the instructions here on their board each player locates these chips and puts them into their bag giving them a good mix the player who most recently cooked something becomes the star player and is given these fortune teller cards which they'll shuffle and set beside themselves and that's the setup in the quacks of Fred Lynn bog the players will be trying to build these fantastic potions by dumping as many ingredients as possible into their pots but you have to be careful because if you put too many ingredients in there it'll explode but don't worry we have nine attempts and they can't all go poorly right in the end the player scores the most points from their potions will win and the game is played over nine days or turns at the start of a turn the first player the one who has this fortune deck will draw the top card from it read it aloud and then place it face up into a central discard pile the fortune applies to all players and if it's purple it's resolved now but if it's blue then its effect either applies to the whole turn or it resolves at the end of it just follow its printed instructions and if you're told to take a yellow or purple chip this can only be done if those colors are currently in play and at the beginning of the game when they aren't then this part of the effect would just be ignored after drawing the fortune it's time for players to prepare their potions in what is known as the potions phase and players will all do this at the same time you don't have to wait for anyone there's no turns you just take your bag give it a good stir and then draw a random single chip note the value printed here and then count that many spaces from your droplet token and the spaces are these bubbles that we see going outwards from the droplet inside the pot so this one would be placed one space away from the droplet now you have a choice stop here or draw another chip and you do want to end as far up this bubble track as possible so let's draw another chip this time we got a three and you always count from the last chip that you placed so one two three means it would go here now we can stop or try again and you'll keep repeating this choice over and over now that said you must always stop if your bag is empty or if you would ever reach or go past the last space in your pot which would then put that final chip whichever one it is on this final space now you may be thinking shouldn't you always just keep drawing from the bag well you'll be tempted to but all of these white chips in your bag are cherry bombs and if the total value of them placed inside of your potion pot would ever exceed seven then your pot explodes the chip that caused that explosion is still placed but then you must stop drawing new chips you'll also suffer other penalties later as we'll see so you'll want to stop drawing chips from your bag before this explosion would happen but just keep in mind you're never allowed to look in your bag now if after drawing one of these white cherry bomb' chips from your bag your flask has this full side face up you can use it by flipping it over to return a white chip that you just drew back into your bag but keep in mind it does have to be a white chip that you just drew now well empty this flask cannot be used again but we'll see how you can refill it a little bit later if the white chip that you drew would cause your pot to explode you cannot use the flask to put it back in your bag it's already too late and it must be placed as we'll learn later you'll be able to add new chips to your bag and this matters because all chips other than white and orange have special abilities which are written on their related ingredient books chips that are green purple or black have effects that only trigger at the end of the potions phase but blue red and yellow chips have an effect that occurs as soon as they're taken from your bag so let's go over these three colors right now this is a blue crow skull and when drawn you'll place it into your pot but then depending on the value printed on it you will either draw one two or four more chips from your bag to see what's coming up and then you may pick one of those to place right now returning the others to the bag you can also return all of them if you'd prefer if you do take one place it into your pot and if it has any special abilities those are carried out right now as well if you draw a red toadstool check to see if you have any orange in your pot if you didn't then you would place the toadstool as usual but if you have one or two orange chips here put the toadstool a number of spaces forward equal to the number printed on it plus one if you have three or more orange chips in your pot place it two more spaces than usual and again you're reminded of all this right here in the ingredient book if you pull out a yellow Mandrake chip then after placing it if the chip that you had just placed before it is white then you may put that chip back into your bag keeping the yellow chip in its current position the other chip colors and their abilities we'll discuss a little bit later but those are all the ones that resolve as soon as you draw the chip from the bag and just note you don't have to resolve a chips ability if you don't want to and also remember that each chip has a different effect depending on which set you're using if you ever have any questions about how an ability works you'll find it explained in detail in this included almanac of ingredients either way once everyone has decided to stop drawing chips or has been forced to because of explosions the evaluation phase of the turn begins which follows six steps as shown here on your board starting with the Bonus Die step here every player whose pot didn't explode checks to see which scoring space they reached and this is the one directly after the last chip you put in your pot if you made it to this final spot then your storage space is on the handle of the spoon the player whose space is furthest from the zero found here in the center of your pot now gets to roll the bonus die gaining its reward when checking to see who is furthest out ignore any values found in the space itself because some of them have repeated values what matters is the distance from the center and if players are tied for being the farthest out then each of them gets to roll the die this is the symbol for points and if you see this side you get one while the side gives you two and points are tracked by moving your score marker along the spaces here if you roll this side collect a Ruby from the supply and place it on your Ruby sack this side gives you a value 1 orange chip from the supply which you'll then add to your bag this side lets you move your droplet one space forward and if there's a chip there just move it to one side now you move to the chip action step in beginning with the first player and going clockwise around the table each player checks to see if they have any black green or purple chips in their pots and if so they carry out their related actions for example if you have any hawkmoth chips count how many of them you have and if you have the same number of them as your opponent then move your droplet forward one space however if you have more than your opponent you'll also gain a Ruby and if you're playing a three or four player game you'll use the other side which has slightly different rules with a green garden spider if it's the last or second last chip in your pot then you get a Ruby for each one in either of these positions so if you had to garden spiders here you'd get two rubies for the purple ghosts breath chip if you have one in your pot then you gain one point if you have two then you gain a point and a ruby if you have three or more you gain two points and move your droplet forward one space and you can always choose a lower effect than the one that you are currently owed so in this case if you'd prefer you could choose to just collect one point and one Ruby next it's the Ruby's step and here all players who's scoring space shows one of these ruby symbols now collects one from the supply now any player whose pot exploded must choose to perform either this victory point step or the buy chip step but not both if your pot did not explode then you will do both of these in this order first is the victory point step where you will score the point value shown inside of the parchment on your space if any moving your victory point marker forward that number of spaces then it's the by chip step we're beginning with the first player and going in clockwise order everyone takes a turn to buy one or two chips but if you buy two they cannot be the same color the greenish number on your scoring space is the amount of coins you'll be able to spend on these new ingredients and the cost of each new chip that you want to buy is found on the left side of their ingredient book for example if I wanted a value one green chip it would cost me four coins but a value for green chip would cost 14 and when buying chips just ensure you don't go over the vow you have coins you have four that turn and then any you don't spend are lost also note that the various ingredients are limited so once the last chip has been taken from a particular supply no more of that ingredient can be purchased with this step completed every player puts their new chips along with any others that are currently in their pot back into their bag now we come to the end of turn step where you can spend rubies for every two you discard and return to the supply you can move your droplet token one space forward giving you a head-start in future rounds you can also spend two rubies if your flask is empty in order to flip it to its full side so that can be used again in a later turn and during this step you can do any combination of both of these things moving your droplet token and refilling your flasks for cost again of two rupees each finally the deck of fortune-teller cards are passed to the next player in clockwise order making them the new start player and then the flame is moved forward here to signal the start of the next turn the symbol here tells you that at the start of this turn the yellow book and its chips will be brought into play and can now be acquired and when you get to the start of turn three the same will be true with the purple ingredient at the start of turn six each player will take an add one of these white chips to their bag making it a little more dangerous also starting at the beginning of turn two and all future turns after the fortune has been drawn all players not in the lead for victory points get to toss some rat tails into their pot to do this you'll check your position on the score track and see how many rats are pictured between you and the player in first place for this blue player would be 1 2 3 if we had a third player here they would get 1 while a player here would get 0 either way you then put your rat stone that number of spaces past your droplet and now after drawing your first chip of the turn you'll count that number of spaces from the rat stone instead of from your droplet and this will give you a slight advantage during the next end of turn step you'll take your rat stone back to place again after the next fortune card is drawn if necessary when you reach the final turn of the game you'll notice these symbols which change how the potion phase of the last turn is played here instead of players drawing freely from their bags you'll do this step together the first player will call out stir and then everyone will reach into their bag grab one chip in a closed fist and draw it out and then once everyone's ready these will be revealed and placed as usual now if you'd like to stop drawing then just make sure when your hand comes out you've got nothing in your fist so when you reveal it it's empty this is your way of saying you want to pass and you'll just set your bag aside and the other players will keep drawing as they wish to and you'll keep doing this until everyone has passed or everyone's pots have exploded and this way of drawing chips out of the bag can be done in all the previous rounds as well if you'd prefer but it will add to the length of the game at the end of the last turn as shown here instead of buying ingredients you buy one point for every five coins you scored on your scoring space and you can also buy one point for every two rubies you have if you would ever go past the final space on the scoring track then take your matching marker from here and flip it over as a reminder that you have 50 points and then keep counting again from the start of the track now if this is the end of the ninth turn then the player with the most points wins and if there's a tie the tied player who got to the furthest scoring space wins and if there's still a tie then the tied players share the victory and that's how you play the quacks of clever bug however in addition to the variety of different ingredient sets you can play with you can also play with the game variant explained here which uses the backs of the potion boards but these rules I'll leave for you to discover on your own that's it if you have any other questions but anything else that you saw here feel free to put them in the
