The Philosophy of 12 Ga. 00 Buckshot

[Music] [Music] you might remember last summer viewer Scott who goes by the youtube name diesel prof he donated a couple of 22 rifles to the 4-h club in a nearby County that I happen to operate and he donated a ton of ammunition one of the boxes of ammunition was this law enforcement buckshot is that a thing I'll leave it to you to be the judge do you really think that law enforcement buy a box of stuff that says law enforcement buckshot on it or do you think they just buy standard over off the shelf Americans like I was telling you earlier if they made a 12-gauge shell that was a foot long and held 120 guys would but people would buy it just so they could post it on Facebook exactly so just because we have 12 pellets here is that better you might be familiar with the concept that double-aught buck has it flies downrange spreads right so having 12 pellets spreading out is that a good thing we have to be accountable for every one of those pellets and where they go and what they damage so do we want 12 of them flying downrange and a goofy pattern we want tried-and-true 9 pellet that might have a little bit better shot cup and 10 yards 10 yards okay 10 inch circle it's all metric oh yeah I'm ready at 10 yards 12 pellets traveling 1,200 in 90 feet per second we had approximately a 5 and 1/2 inch spread it can be argued that having more pellets but at a lower velocity will give you about the same amount of damage and possibly reduce the chance of over penetration okay now for the Winchester double X is there a Winchester single X or a triple we now have just nine pellets but traveling a little bit faster fourteen hundred and fifty feet per second as opposed to 1290 this round has less recoil but higher velocity and recoil may be a consideration depending on the shooter we had a really nice pattern almost a hexagon shape the other holes were caused by fragments of the wad one two three four five six seven eight nine pellets all nine pellets inside the tenant circle we just measured I've got four and a half inch spread here and a five inch spread here so just a slightly tighter group than the Italiano police rounds and there is paul Errol's magic or is it this one why are people so concerned about the ninth pellet flyer the best I can think of is when you're out shooting double-aught buck and you've always got one pellet up here people are just wondering what the hell is for where it comes in to practical accuracy is if you're ever shooting double out book at someone you need to know where all nine of those pellets are going or eight I think one of the concerns was it might hit an innocent bystander but I'm thinking if you if you're shooting in a direction where there's a you could hit an innocent bystander you may not be shooting you know or maybe you shouldn't be choosing a shotgun folks yeah so shotgun is not a sniper weapon doesn't matter what you see on pop g or call of duty call of duty's however you can go back and look at previous type fledermaus video the federal flight control round is unbelievably accurate we were hitting head size groups at 25 yards over double this disabled we need to show people that well alright I just haven't had with us let's do it okay flight control did not smell fly perfectly the flight control is really interesting technology a technology that actually works and isn't a gimmick the nine pellets stay inside that proprietary rigid wad up to about nine yards and then they're released at ten yards we had maybe just a little more than a one inch pattern with so much energy concentrated in a small area there is chance of over penetration and I can also see the argument where you may as well use a slug at this range our previous groups were what five five and a half inches four and a half five five and a half inches this thing is exactly two and a quarter inches across it's mostly the wide exactly the same distance nine pellets almost all in the same hole you can see very clearly here if you look right in the center that's where that ninth flyer poet wind [Music] mentioned that other channels that we like watching a friend I'm sure we'll get a Christmas card from Paul Harold yeah anyway I've never talked to him X way more intelligence but I think he's watched at one of my videos so if I was to use double I book and I wanted a tight pattern which I do this is the one I pick that federal flight control does have a much well it has an increased recoil to it but if you can handle that it sure makes for a tight group which had the worst recoil you know I did flight control okay over even even though there was only nine pellets it had more recoil than the twelve pellets yes the twelve pellet round was pretty stout the black Winchester doubled X that's 2x s folks Winchester double X had the least amount of recoil next up the line was the spicy meatball from Italy and then of course federal flight control which is known for being a pretty good kick I need to explain why the flight control having less velocity has more recoil now the weight of the payloads are exactly the same but the flight control uses that rigid wad the double X on the other hand uses what's called a cushioned wad and I should mention that the law enforcement uses that same exact Italian wad called @ FS 12 now there's a lot of different variations of cushion wads but as the gun is shot the wad sort of acts like a shock absorber and actually reduces the felt recoil how far away 20 yards we shot the pennies at 20 yards the same distance and I think the spread was about the same believe it or not yeah here I think you've got one two three four five six seven it's either eight or eight and nine let's give it the benefit of the doubt and say there's nine pellets out of 12 out of 12 pellets only eight of them actually hit the plate that's a pretty wide spread at 20 yards we had nearly a 20 inch pattern but is that terrible well depending on the conditions the shooter skills the stress levels your point of aim could be nearly a foot off but you'd still score some substantial hits Winchester DoubleX all nine pellets hit one two three four five six seven eight and nine pretty impressive that at twenty yards all nine pellets hit better tighter group than the Italian around which sent at least three of them over the shoulder or down below now these have a higher velocity also than the law-enforcement ones we had about the same number of hits and a higher velocity than the twelve pellet and a lower velocity so which would do more damage right and a slightly less recoil so right yeah and again you wanted to be counted accountable for all of your pellets so I'm gonna choose at this point the nine pellet round because at least I know they're gonna hit here on a center mass plate with a tighter pattern the shooter has to be a little more skilled this gave us a 12 inch pattern but this still allows about six inches of human error and we have to be honest and accept that we're not perfect and the Magic Flight Control wide flight control one to three rounds three pellets over here on the Left all six of the rest of them meet in one tight little cluster at twenty yards that's crazy folks and then you can see where the the wad smacked into the plate right there below it oh yeah six of them all in almost the exact same hole at twenty yards that's nuts for accuracy with a 12-gauge shotgun don't luck yeah I'm very impressed with the flight control it consistently holds a tight group if that's what you need as long as you can tolerate the move the increased recoil a lot of my officers don't like shooting it because it's got a good thump to it but if you ever got to use it one night and across the living room distances that's the one to go with yeah there you go all right is that it I think that's it for you guys on the next video the flight control gave us the tightest pattern of all nearly five inches at 20 yards now this is supposed to be a nine pellet round but I only see eight pellets in these tests we had absolutely perfect control of the environment there was no stress the lighting was good and Greg was shooting from arrest under adverse conditions where it may be dark where you don't have a good sight picture where maybe you're moving or the target is moving you may want a little bit of spread we only tested three different very different types of double-aught buckshot here and there's dozens of other variations out there so know where your pattern is and know what your skill level is thanks for watching
