well hey there idiots welcome back to observe in today's video we're going to be analyzing the non-verbal communication of the menendez brothers back during their trials and testimonies regarding the fatal crimes that they carried out against their parents now as with all true crime content here on the channel i have to tread lightly in order to maintain standards that hold up to the community guidelines set forth on youtube so i will be avoiding specific details during this analysis in order to maintain those guidelines but i will also try to provide a storyline as best as i can so that thank you so much for joining us and let's turn it back over to logan in the studio and those were marvelous words from logan thank you so much for that all joking set aside this case is an extremely serious case it has some very gruesome details in it and due to the nature of their testimonies i'm going to be exercising something that can be done to help practice and hone your nonverbal reading and accuracy it's a technique that i used to use early on in my studies where you mute whatever scene or video or testimony etc that you were looking at and rely exclusively on the non-verbal tells that you were able to observe this does limit in some areas to where you can't use things like the verbiage being used you cannot use things like the tone or pitch of the person's voice you have to rely exclusively on what the body is saying at that time i'm doing this for two reasons one because it's excellent practice and it's a good show of what you can see just via the non-verbal alone but then also this will allow me to be able to analyze and show the emotions that they are feeling without offering any inappropriate content but that is enough talk let's go ahead and begin into this nonverbal analysis as i said it will be silent but you will be able to hear music as you watch this so that it's not just an entire video of crushing silence interrupted by me talking let's begin [Music] okay so during this time you can see a few things we can see that his eyebrows are lowered and furrowed inwards there that is an indicator of concentration perhaps it could be mixed in with aggression something along those lines but it is common in areas of anxiety to be able to see someone who is trying to listen to or for something have this expression so i don't know what is being asked at this point but something is being asked of him and he is listening for it also you can see that he moves backwards slightly and increases his blinking this indicates that this shift of balance it could be an uncomfortable question and chances are just due to the nature of this video it likely is centered around the allegations of his parents towards him and his brother so if this is the case then what we're seeing is synchronized body language so far let's keep watching to see what else we can see just based off of his nonverbal [Music] communication okay so he's looking away he's leaning back you could see a lot of action up in his eyebrows as well these are all common indicators of agitation if you look closely at his mouth it begins to quiver as well this is an indicator of emotions it looks as if he is about to cry it's hard to be able to say if he is or not just because there's no audio but for what i'm seeing here whatever was asked was very very critical and difficult so his body language is now reflecting that let's see what else it tells us [Music] so i'm seeing contempt coming to his face on the one side of his mouth also a lot of pressing his lips together this means that there's an intense emotion that's going around and he has contempt centered around this he's also looking off to the side and squinting this is common during recollection so with his eyebrows lowered the looking off to the side with the squint the common lip compressions and also the slight contempt smile whatever he is recollecting it's very troublesome and he has contempt for hit he looks down on it be it morally or intellectually he has that sense of superiority and judgment towards it let's continue [Music] it's hard [Music] so he keeps raising his eyebrows repeatedly this is a pleading expression at times it can also be an accenting gesture to be able to amplify what's being said i don't know if it's the amplifying expression during this time due to the fact that it's not exactly synchronizing with where his mouth is moving at the time so chances are this is a pleading expression of sorts which indicates to me that whatever he's talking about it could be perhaps uncomfortable or he wants the people to understand how he's feeling that would be the motive behind that specific flash and expression that's shown up a couple times here [Music] wasting [Music] so he's exposing his neck but he's also lowering his head that's an interesting combination of gestures there the exposing of the neck is vulnerability but the lowering of the head can be seen as an aggression gesture it's just fascinating to me the psychology behind that specific cluster indicates that whatever he's talking about must be indeed negative and he is also trying to show that he's vulnerable with it as well indicated by the exposing of the neck [Music] so he leans back and settles a bit but if you look at the corners of his mouth and nose in that area they have a little bit of action indicating some disgust in this specific instance since we don't have the audio we don't know for sure what we're talking about here but from what i am seeing across this nonverbal communication it seems to be synchronized which is a good indicator of authenticity so i will also just so you know link this video that i am reviewing down below so that you can watch it with audio if you would so choose like i said this is a very graphic case in general so some of these details could be very triggering towards people who have gone through sa on any form so be aware of that but if you want to be able to watch through this with audio i suggest you check out the video in the description below but from what we're seeing so far he does seem to be showing genuine indicators of authenticity so far let's keep watching immigration okay big sigh you could see that through the leaning back and raising of his shoulders and then falling back down and then as he's looking back towards the person who's asking the questions he also has a slight shrug so this is an indicator of exasperation or discomfort mixed with some insecurity this all makes sense non-verbally and i'm assuming it's lining up with what he's saying verbally i will talk about what i saw in relation to the audio at the end of this and then that will line up for those of you who decided to go and watch that so we can see kind of what everything says at the very very end and i can give a more solid opinion on this specific case [Music] so whatever he's saying here he's having a lot of difficulty saying it you could see it through the shifting of his posture which can be an anxiety or discomfort tell you could also see it through the action in his shoulder as it continues to move around and indicate insecurity in what he's saying there you could also see that he's having very halted and stilted verbage during this time this can be due to emotional processing or it can be due to the fact that he might be trying to lie he might be trying to come up with a lie but right now in this specific situation the lie would be out of place so far his body language from what we're seeing is indicating authenticity so a lie doesn't make as much sense but it is still something to be able to note and we'll continue on through this muted analysis [Music] so he has some lip compressions there he's biting back some sort of negative emotion or negative sentiment or words he also has a quick chin jut as well this is a defiance gesture whatever he's talking about that's negative he's also defiant against which in relation to this case i can kind of fill in the blanks as to what he might be talking about and i'm not good at reading people's mouths i'm not a lip reader i can't understand what he's saying from looking at what he's saying but from his nonverbal communication he's defiant about something that's negative let's continue watching [Music] you can see his eyes are starting to glisten this is an indicator of genuine emotion it's very difficult for people who haven't been trained in acting to be able to invoke crying on the drop of a hat the ability to cry on command is definitely a tick on an actor or actress's belt i'm not sure if they've had any training about acting in this time so i could say that maybe he's acting in this point but judging from the rest of his body language this also lines in with everything else if it's being genuine so those are the two avenues that i have to examine this at if i'm leaning towards a direction i'd be leaning towards this being genuine emotion that's coming out also you can see by the shape of his eyebrows they're no longer downward turned in the middle which is an indicator of aggression or concentration somewhere in that side of things they're turning upwards lightly in the middle which is an indicator of sadness and or fear so that emotional switch has taken place in his eyebrows as well this is all something that we need to be able to keep track of as we continue on through this whatever he's talking about here is causing him to cry and it's genuine emotion from what we can see big no shake big leaning back leaning forward now he's very agitated i don't know if it was a question or a picture or what could be going on here but he's very unhappy by it and that's indicated clearly by his body language you don't need somebody who does this professionally to be able to tell you that he's very upset right now he's genuinely very upset and his nonverbal communication is indeed reinforcing that we can rest assured so far that he is being authentic so this this specific gesture is common in shame it can also be seen in sadness and the chances are in this specific situation it's probably a combination of both he is both ashamed and also grieved by this no duh who would be if what they are saying is true this should be extremely difficult for them to work through and from what i'm seeing it seems to be true their body language seems to be revealing authenticity in this portion of their [Music] testimony [Music] still a lot of intense emotion all over this is a full body emotion this is another indicator of authenticity across his face it's synchronized you could see the pain in his eyebrows his eyes and his mouth even in the corners of his nose as he's trying not to cry it's all synchronized indicator of authenticity but to even hammer that home further he also has some posturing changes he's agitated he's constantly flashing this shame expression which is also coupled with the fact that he's wiping his eyes from tears this is a full body synchronization point this would be heavily heavily indicating of authenticity at this point i feel that whatever he's talking about genuinely was traumatizing for him wherever it is in this storyline it was genuinely traumatizing let's keep [Music] watching [Music] okay so we're flashing over to the brother here and we're seeing much of the same exact emotion on the brother's face this is also a good indicator if it panned over to the brother and the brother was just deadpanned in unemotive then that would be an indicator of possible deceit why is one brother feeling this so so strongly if their testimony was centered around bad things happening to both of them why would there be that desynchronization between two different people there's not this is a difficult area to tell because this is a profile view and half the face is masked but from what i can see this brother is showing genuine emotion and the brother up on the stand to showing genuine emotion indicating to me that whatever they're talking about during these times is genuine let's continue [Music] a little bit of action around his nose during that part it's a very short sentence from what i could see from the movement of his mouth but then around his nose you could see some disgust slip in there as well and also you can notice that his eyebrows are going down into that aggression area again he's disgusted and still sad obviously as you can see just by the general composition of his face but then his eyebrows are revealing aggression or anger or concentration somewhere in that area this is good to be able to see so far he's synchronized [Music] a lip bite there that is interesting lip bites can have various meanings during this specific situation considering the context of the rest of his face and from the rest of the testimony that we've been able to watch so far i would consider this to be in the area of a self-soothing gesture lip biting is often found in that area however it could also be an indicator of biting backwards again similar to a lip compression but with this specific one it's hard to be able to see if he's trying to say anything or was going to say anything but it makes more sense as a self-soothing gesture in regards to the emotions that he's feeling we're breaking all the rules my side signs he's having a lot of difficulty with whatever he's saying here his body is more or less screaming at him to not continue talking but he's forcing himself to continue to talk regardless of where this is in his statement he doesn't want to be talking about what he's saying and that is another common indicator of somebody who has gone through abuse in this area is that they rarely want to speak about it so if this is true if what he's saying is true then his body language is lining up perfectly with that so far either he's an excellent actor or he's being genuine i did hear that they were able to switch on and off their grieving states as opposed to party hosting states sometime around the incident itself but that is all that i could find i couldn't find actual footage of it so i doubt that they're actors i doubt that they're phenomenal at invoking this sort of emotion with that considered i would say that he so far at least is being authentic let's continue watching his testimony and then we'll move on to the brothers testimony as well to see what we can see [Music] there so you can see another big lip bite in there indicator of self-soothing and then also he is just overwhelmed with emotion coming out in a grimace across his entire face a synchronized grief grimace that you could see i can see i'm not going to talk long about it because you can see it [Music] okay so now we are on to the other brother here and i can see right off the bat whatever he's talking about he does a big shrug there's an emotion of i don't know or insecurity centered around that not sure why let's continue [Music] so he has a quick eyebrow raise and he also has a gulp in there as well perhaps mixed in with contempt it's hard to be able to say exactly what that mini expression happening on the lower half of his face is regardless he's responding to something and he has an eyebrow raised possible contempt and a gulp that is pleading but with insincerity mixed in not sure what this is in regards to but i wouldn't necessarily buy whatever he's about to say fully at this point because of that point of desynchronization between the emotional portion of the upper half of his face and the lower half of his face he's got aggression in his eyebrows he also has a tightening and slight pursing of the lips as well this could also be seen as aggression he is angry about whatever he's talking about and he has a similar gestural cluster and body posturing as his brother where he has his arms firmly planted down and he continuously rocks back and forth in discomfort and agitation now the chances are they've been told to be able to keep their hands out of sight because those can be fairly telling at times in these sorts of situations even if it's inaccurate telling they can feel telling which can be more and more difficult for a jury to be able to decide on so with that sort of coaching if that's what's happening here then his hands being hidden makes sense and then also with the facial expressions of whatever's going on he has some anger and hostility in regards of what he's speaking about so a lot of action now in the eyebrows very drawn together very furrowed intense and this is both aggression and you can see that it is likely also sadness by the lower half of his face he's having the same difficulty controlling the lower half of his face in regards to crying as his brother was and his eyebrows are still showing aggression for me this cluster of emotions still makes sense we've moved past that earlier portion where it seems to be disjointed to now where we're having complementary emotions anger and sadness can oftentimes go hand in hand could still be that in the earlier area where we saw pleading with contempt but those are more disjointed emotions so in this fashion he is now recollecting or speaking of something that is genuine it's hard to keep my cool [Music] knowing i'm your man so let's spend some time wasting a lot of pain here a lot of genuine torment across his face you can see he says some words very very short sentence of it and then he just has his mouth open and he's looking down and he's very tense his entire body is very tense this is common in people who are recollecting extremely traumatic events i would expect this to be authentic let's continue [Music] so he's doing mouth covering gestures as well again his body is fighting him against saying something this is something that we saw on his brother this is still an indicator of somebody who has gone through trauma they're not likely to want to speak about it an indicator for authenticity not deceit immigration issues pain and shame those are the two common expressions on his face mixed with the agitation posturing that we're seeing in his body that's all synchronized that's at least indicating to me authenticity as to whatever he was just referring to there i would believe him based only off of his nonverbal communication he's doing some gesturing during this time and looking down whatever he's speaking about this is recollection sent around a physical action it's common to see somebody gesturing towards various areas of themselves when speaking of something that's happening physically in a memory and that is also synchronized it's hard to say what exactly he's recalling from his face because for the most part besides his eyebrows he's trying to maintain this blank expression his eyebrows are very furrowed which means that he's stressed about whatever he's speaking about it causes agitation psychologically for him but across those he's talking about a physical memory that he has and it's mixed with stress and agitation as according to his eyebrows [Music] very illustrative gestures here he's doing something with pushing and something up here with his shoulders it's very very illustrative this means that it's a very clear memory for him if it's a genuine memory which once again we're considering it so far as being genuine because that's what everything has been pushing us towards so if that's the case he's talking about something pushing and something on his shoulders or perhaps behind him regardless just due to the fact of the high-energy illustrators it is likely that he's recalling something that's very very vivid and it's related to something physical [Music] very defeated here he's listening for something you could see by the turning of his head that he's likely listening for something but he's also looking down he's very very small his shoulders are hunched but also drooped he just seems defeated he's exhausted both psychologically and perhaps physically by recollecting whatever he did pushing us towards authenticity [Music] so [Music] i will note that both brothers have similar expressions again the brother up on the stand has a fairly blank yet negative expression and the brother that is sitting down also has a fairly blank yet semi-negative expression so that's another point of synchronization between the two i don't know if that means anything right now i don't know what they're talking about but let's continue [Music] so i don't see any pain in his eyes and his eyebrows are furrowed and lowered and that could be an indicator of anger also this strange gesture popped up here not sure what that's in regards to but it is at least noticeable to us that he's angry about whatever he's speaking so he has a shoulder raise and a big no shake seeing this specific cluster that no shake is likely warding off negative emotions or reflecting negative emotions and also insincerity slipping in with the movement of the shoulder [Music] big lip compression there at the very very end he's fighting back something negative be it emotions or words and it's pretty substantial because that's a pretty prominent and powerful lip compression during that situation i'm gonna go ahead and watch this video back through with some sound and then i'll come back in and let you know what my opinion is at the very very end so i guess we'll just go ahead and do a little little cut here okay so i was able to watch that little clip that we just went through with audio and from what i saw the words and the nonverbal communication that we were able to kind of pick up on were synchronized from the audio to the visual so if you haven't gone back through and watched this with audio through that link below it will help clarify from here on out but if you don't want to i understand and i will say this across the words and the body language it was synchronized for both brothers all the way throughout this is an indicator of authenticity along with that we saw some fully fledged nonverbal clusters across both the face and the body that is also an indicator of authenticity so my opinion based off of the research that i was able to do is that the menendez brothers were not lying about their abuse i do believe that they were being sincere about that this is not focusing on whether or not their abuse has anything to do with their crime against their parents but that's my opinion if you disagree with me feel free to let me know and let me know why in the
