well hey there idiots welcome back to observe in today's video we're going to be looking at the case of scott peterson and what all happened around that let's go ahead and begin now with any and all true crime content there are two possible risks to this type of content one is that the studio who holds these interviews could claim my video and it can be taken down or all the revenue is taken away and two it can also be flagged as inappropriate or potentially inappropriate content by youtube systems so i'm going to do my best to try to be as ad friendly as i possibly can during this but just in case if you would like to be able to make more true prime content like this possible please consider following some of the links in the description below that would include patreon merch audible so on and so forth all of those help out so you kind of get to choose your pick also thank you for watching the video regardless now scott peterson was happily married with a wife who was eight months pregnant it was coming up on the christmas of 2002 and stuff kind of went down from there he went out on christmas eve to go fishing and when he came back his wife was missing honestly there is a ton of contradictory evidence contradictory eyewitnesses and so once again on this case it was boiled down to what i can see non-verbally if you would like to be able to hear a good synopsis of the backstory of scott go ahead and check out dr grande's video he covers the synopsis a little bit more thoroughly than i will now the footage that i am going to be reviewing is from 2003 from april of 2003 that is several months of separation between the interview and the actual incident itself this means that a nonverbal read is going to be less accurate than if it was more raw i'm reaching out to studios to see if i can gain access to some of the more early footage in early interviews but i haven't received any word back yet if that does come out then i may be able to do another analysis on a more reliable series of footage also i have access to the initial interrogation tape that was released to the public but it is as with all interrogation tapes absolutely atrocious video quality and there's nothing that you can glean from the face so it would all be reliant on just the broad gestures posturing so on and so forth of the rest of his body language i decided i didn't want to go through that one because it's an hour long and that would be an extremely long video but then also because it was just difficult to get a read on it's not a great series of videos however if that's something that you would like to be able to see let me know and i might be able to get around to doing that without further ado though let's go ahead and watch this video and see what we can learn from scott's nonverbal communication did you murder your wife no no i just thought and okay that took a long time right right off the bat this is with diane sawyer and she asks an extremely pointed and effective question did you murder your wife and there's a whole stream of odd non-verbal communication that just pours out of scott right off the bat first he does some pretty heavy and noticeable eye blocking this shows up again and again and again in the interview and it's something that needs to be made note of in an eye block can indicate a need and a desire to separate oneself mentally or even physically from a negative stimulant that could be a situation that could be a threat that can be a concept all of it isn't around this idea of separation from that negative thing so when he does that that's important he also looks down this could be classified as a look of shame or it could also be yet another distancing gesture or expression a looking away from an uncomfortable situation is not uncommon if you watched my most recent video on olivia jade this was one of her tales of discomfort which she would look away from the person asking the uncomfortable question it's not an uncommon tell he also does a little nervous laugh that's also kind of to be expected in this sort of situation though it is arguably a strange reaction to giggle at this point and this almost inappropriate mirth pops up multiple times in this interview and i think it's important to note but that's enough for this little tiny itty bitty amount of information here let's keep watching i have absolutely nothing to do with her disappearance and and use the word murder and yeah i want to point out a verbal thing that he does here he needlessly uses the word absolutely and there are statement analysts that say that this is just a needless fluff as if he were lying and trying to go a little bit above and beyond to convince us of this side of things there's nothing non-verbally that affirms that however it is still an important piece of data that i'm keeping in mind as i continue throughout the read i mean that is a possibility it's not one we're ready to accept and it creeps in my mind late at night so i have watched hours and hours of footage of scott during all the different interviews that i could possibly find trying to establish a baseline and from what i can tell his baseline has this fairly neutral expression on it with maybe a slight upturn of the corner of his mouth that is how his face seems to rest regularly so this is an important aspect of his baseline so in this section you can see that he is doing a pretty noticeable large smile a less trained analyst would immediately look at that and be like hey that could be something like duping delight but unfortunately duping delight will usually last only a few seconds if that this is a prolonged expression and it doesn't line up exactly with his eyes you could see a little bit of action in his eyelids and eyebrow area that doesn't correlate with the smile itself so it's not a full smile it's not genuine glee now duping delight is quite literally this mindset of glee because you have the power over the person you're lying to that's where duping delight comes from that's not here it's not evident he's smiling but it's almost in response to the pain that you can see in his eyes so when he's forcing the smile out one it's very prolonged which is not a sign of a genuine emotion emotions change constantly so when he's pushing this kind of smile consistently that seems to be a forced expression now if it's a forced expression why is he doing it here and why is he doing it now well to be very frank many people will try to smile through pain that they're experiencing especially emotional pain it helps them cope that's probably the case here and early in the morning and during the day all we can think about is the right resolutions to find her so to speak on the level of emotional turmoil that he's undergoing right now you could see the action in two primary areas the action underneath his eyes where you can see it's tensing up this is very common in emotional turmoil you're about to cry and your eyes will show that before the actual tears come and then you could see his quite literally stiff upper lip as he's working on muscling down the turmoil that he's feeling these are indicators of genuine emotion not a forced cry well but as you know increasingly in the public suspicion has turned on you yes definitely did you ever hit her did you ever injure her no no my god no um so that was a very very quick response and there's two reasons that that could be either one that's a very rehearsed response for him he's told himself i'm going to respond this way regardless or it's actually a genuine response but it is also important to note that he looks down and off to the side he does this as i said consistently throughout the interview this look down to the side there's not a one size fits all explanation to this it's very person to person based so in this sort of situation i can't right now say what that look down into the side is i don't believe in the concept of directional iqs there has been a large amount of research that has gone into disproving that specific facet of possible nonverbal communication so i don't believe that he's trying to come up with an auditory lie or anything like that simply because there is not enough scientific research to back that theory so during this time i simply do not have an answer i have to have more data violence towards women is unapproachable it is the most disgusting act me all right so as i said before if you look at the corner of his mouth during this it continually slips upward and this could be because of duping delight i don't think so it would be more likely in this scenario to be a smile of contempt it's on one side of the face and it's in regards to something that he is saying he doesn't like in his body language is showing something that could reflect that so the likelihood is if you're just weighing the odds the likelihood is is that he's being genuine in this point he doesn't appreciate violence towards women and i know that suspicion has turned to me and it's that's a pretty big lip compression and eye blocking cluster there this means that he really doesn't like that idea that suspicion is being turned towards him and this makes sense on both sides of the coin either he's innocent and he doesn't like it because it's wrong or he's guilty and he doesn't like it because he could be caught regardless he does not like the fact that people are pointing fingers at him even though he understands it he emotionally does not like it turning me one because i'm her husband and that's a natural thing and i've heard all the statistics on all the news shows about that being you know someone that a husband ex-husband a boyfriend that is statistically one who would be responsible for her disappearance okay he licks his lips here i have heard some nonverbal analysts say that this is once again another thing related to duping delight that's not true licking of the lips is a sign of nervousness there are some who say that if you lick your lips you're subconsciously like sticking your tongue out at somebody and i feel like that's just reaching it's just really trying to reach to make non-verbal analysis and nonverbal communication and the reading thereof sound more like a superpower than the actual science that it is so in this situation when a person has a dry mouth that could be because of maybe the fight or flight responses that happen in a human body when there is a threat and that's when your mouth will actually grow dry this is also just based off of nervousness as well when you're nervous you'll have a dry mouth and you'll lick your lips in that sort of situation as well chances are he's just nervous here he's not doing duping delight or anything of those sorts it's just nerves and um i'm sorry i forgot your question did you ever hit her did you ever injure no no never so he says no no no never and some statement analysts say that this is once again him trying to fluff up his argument that he's saying no no no never as if it's really trying to convince you but i think he is trying to convince diane in this point that he wouldn't and the thing is is that his nonverbal communication lines up with this he's shaking his head no and he's saying no there's no oddities in his tone he does do a substantial eye blocking this has shown up again and again and again in this interview so it's just something that i have to make note of those eye blocks because they're so prevalent and on so many seemingly random points but it is still important to note um i've answered your question because the suspicion that it's been turned to me and it turned to me because of the inappropriate romantic um that i had with amber friday that was a cluster of shame and you could see it by the setting of his face the relaxed cheek muscles the looking down the relaxed corners of the mouth it's all coming together to form this cluster that is shame he's ashamed of the affair that he was having during this time amber frye went public about the romance after seeing all the stories about lacey peterson's disappearance i met scott peterson november 20th 2002. i was introduced to him i was told he was unmarried amber frye came forward i'm glad she did you are definitely why appropriate thing to do and it really shows what a person of character she is um and it allows us to um get back looking for lacie so he says that he's appreciative of his mistress coming forward to say that she didn't know about this so on and so forth the important thing that stuck out to me is that his body language largely aligned with the words he was saying however there were still those really prevalent eye blocking expressions in there as well so that was something that i had to make note of as i continued on through the read did you tell her that you were not married i did i did um and then when lacey disappeared um i called her and admittedly it wasn't immediately it was a couple days after lacey's disappearance i telephoned her and told her the truth that's a pretty sizable lip compression there and seeing that sort of thing after that sort of statement to see that nonverbal display right after a statement like that it means he's biting back something further either an emotion or more information there's something that he's concealing around that this isn't a sign of deception it's just a sign that there's something more we have to keep watching to find out what that is the truth that i was married that lacy's disappeared she didn't know about it at that point and then she contacted the police during that time he does a pretty sizable and odd nod it doesn't show up in his nonverbal repertoire anywhere else and this is just a red flag there's not really a specific meaning behind that from what i could tell but it is an oddity during that time and when people are being deceitful a lot of the times thanks again to the fight-or-flight responses that your body undergoes automatically it feels more energized so there can be odd movements during those times it could also have freezes during those times because despite the popular saying of fight or flight it's actually three there's fight flight or freeze freeze isn't as well known but it is still in there so this is all still centered around the possibility of deception if i saw all of this in a cluster like this i would want to push harder there i would want to ask more questions to really decipher if that was being genuine because to me it doesn't come across as genuine there's too many oddities non-verbally to come across as completely and cleanly genuine so i'd like to push there but fry says she first found out about lacey from the news not from scott were you in love with her no so he says no shakes his head does a little bit of distance and does a little bit of a distaste expression with his mouth it's where this compressed lip expression pulled lightly to the side it's disagreement or unhappiness or discomfort with that entire scenario so he said no and he distanced himself from it so he likely means that he was not in love with her and he knows the negative connotations behind that was this the first time are there others out there no there's no one else who can come forward no i owe a tremendous apology to everyone okay so when diane's asking is there anybody else and he says no that's genuine from what i can see there's no reason for me to not believe him in that situation and then he switches to this strained expression as if he's having to choke out these next words where he's saying i owe a big apology to everyone and it feels like he's just having to say that largely because i believe he doesn't feel that he is in the wrong as much as people see him as in the wrong on this so when he's trying to force out this apology you can see it all over his face in a very clear and prevalent expression of strain had you told anyone did you tell police told the police immediately when that was uh the first night we were together so the police i spent um with the police you told them about her yeah once again a huge pile of odd expressions just pouring out of him last time that he had this odd pile of weird expressions it was a sign of possible deceit and sure enough it was so now he's doing another pile of odd expressions with looking down lip compressions this weird squint with one eye looking up at her expression a whole bunch of needless facial expressions which last time if we're gonna go by just patterns here last time it meant that it was a lie so seeing this i would assume that next time it's gonna be a lie december 24th on that wasn't true sure enough and then he also does a pretty sizable shrug at the very very end as well and this is insecurity if i had seen that in that situation that's such a massive cluster of red flags that i would want to again push harder ask deeper questions and be a little bit more pointed in that area because it seems like it was a lie and scott peterson called us after the interview to set the record straight he said he never told the police about his affair with amber frye but claims he did tell his wife did your wife find out about it i told my ooh wife lip compression there as well the lip compressions as i just stated before is the biting back of an emotion or further information and in this area it could be both maybe there was more to that story than he's sharing or maybe there's a large amount of negative emotions behind that both of those answers are completely plausible and they're not mutually exclusive they can both be true regardless there's more baggage behind that than he was allowing himself to say right there when um early december did it cause a rupture in the marriage it was not um a positive obviously it's a you know inappropriate um but so much eye blocking here just extraordinary amounts of eye blocking it looks like he's about to fall asleep with how much eye blocking there is this isn't great for him this isn't a great look because it shows that all that he wants to do is detach himself from that which i suppose i could understand i would want to detach myself from stupid or terrible things that i've done but it's it's just not coming across as genuine to the viewers it's not coming across as open to the viewers or as compassionate to the viewers it's just coming across as defensive and detached it was not something that we weren't dealing with a lot of arguing no no no um i you know i can't say that that even you know she was okay with the idea a lot of odd verbal stuttering there in this and during a non-verbal analysis it's still very important to pay attention to the verbal side of things and i try to keep it in mind during these videos i really try to strip it down and rely on as much of exclusively non-verbal communication as i can but it's really not good to just ignore the other facets so during this part where he's seemingly stuttering over his words an abnormal amount it's just striking me as odd in this instance and also the words that he's saying don't make sense either now it could be true that maybe it was just like a small setback in their marriage marriages all function differently but with this sort of activity around it that doesn't make as much sense it feels more like he might be trying to hide some facet of it especially with the earlier nonverbal communication than what he's revealing on this interview chances are his wife was way more upset about it than he's trying to sell it as but he knows that he can't say that it was a pretty big deal because that's it's way worse for him and he doesn't want to have people looking at him he wants to have people and he said this himself i don't want people looking at me i want them looking for lacie that's his wife and i i don't know i don't buy that it was just a super smooth transition for them but it wasn't anything that would break us apart there wasn't a lot of anger no do you really expect people to believe that an eight and a half month pregnant woman learns her husband has had an affair and is saintly and casual about it accommodating makes a peace with it well i'm yeah you don't know no one knows our relationship with us so he does a little bit of shrugging in there he does a little bit of this nervous pulling of the corner of the mouth towards his ear this is all a sign of nerves and insecurity and possible insincerity his pitch increases as well this is all a sign of strain there's emotional and psychological computing that's happening here and i frankly would like to know why his words are true nobody really knows each individual marriage but his body language isn't lining up with what he's saying so it's striking me as odd after all of this little segment here i really don't think his wife was nearly as okay with it as he's trying to push it i think she was quite upset this doesn't look good for scott during this time because that can be pretty incriminating this is another oddity in his baseline this can be a sign of deceit he said it was the right thing he shook his head no and the corner of his mouth was pulled down in this expression here that doesn't lint towards his innocence in this sort of situation it doesn't lend towards his side of the story on this and then he produces this over-the-top adjective for their relationship it just it doesn't seem plausible to me something seems odd [Music]
