The Mamba Mentality - DeVon Franklin

[Music] we take our seats I know and I understand I'm gonna talk about this tonight you know our hearts are heavy for good reason come on good reason yeah our hearts are heavy for good reason yeah how many have a heavy heart for what's been going on and the losses that we all have experienced this week yeah one of the most powerful things about God is you can handle how we feel and one of the most important things about grief is to not rush the process so it's okay to feel the sadness you feel it's okay to feel maybe the despair it's okay to feel that but I want you to know even in that feeling God is with you he's with you don't push yourself to feel differently artificially okay all right because a lot of times you know special we talked about coming into you know gatherings as people and followers of Christ do you know that that same God is good all the time all the time God is good now I love it I have no problem with it but one of the challenges in it is sometimes we feel that just because God is good that means we have to be good all the time [Music] it's okay with making a wet board I know you're good but I'm not feeling good right now and I need your goodness to make up the difference and how I'm feeling my handle back this is one of those moments where I'm asking for you to be superhuman and I'm asking for you to not be in touch with how you feel what we're going through is difficult but I guarantee you that we can make it if we hold on to his hand I know that I know that I want you to have your seat a few would um as as I was asking God what he wanted us to know he has taken me to a very interesting passage very interesting and I would say that tonight is probably gonna be more of a motivational talk than it is a Bible study per se even though I am going to use the Bible I'm going to connected you'll see when God revealed to me I'm going to connect it to this talk in a way that you'll understand why I'm doing that so when I asked God help us understand how to process in put in perspective what is happening and the losses we have experience he took me to Matthew chapter 10 and I'm gonna read from verse 5 through verse 16 he says this the Word of God says these twelve Jesus sent out with the following instruction so he gathered the disciples and he was sending out the disciples in order to carry on the ministry and he said cannot go among the Gentiles or empty or enter any town of the Americans go rather to the lost sheep of Israel as you go reach this message the kingdom of heaven is near the kingdom of heaven is Nina turn to your neighbor and say it's closer than you think turn to your other neighbor and say are you ready are you ready if Jesus want to come right now are you ready or there's some things you got to get an owner whatever you've got to get in order I urge you to do it now whatever area in your life has to be cleaned up I urge you to do it matter do not let procrastination rob you of your destination whatever is holding you back I urge you prioritize it do it now because as we have seen we don't know how much time on this earth we have yet God let's not mistake that we have more time than we do the kingdom of heaven is near verse 8 heal the sick raise the dead cleanse those who have a leprosy drive out demons freely you have received so I want you to freely give verse 9 do not take a long any gold or silver or copper in your belts to go back for the journey for an extra tunic or sandals or a step for the worker is worth his key he said don't worry about it what you need is gonna be on your journey [Music] as you progress down the path that God has ordained for you to be on I need you to stop worrying because if you're on the path that he has called you to the beyond everything you need is already on the path anybody ever been long gas in your car beforehand right okay but the most interesting thing is that if you just stay on the road eventually do you have to make gas station do you have to buy a gas station why because the ability was clapping they're gonna run into a gas station on the road to your purpose and the path that God has for you the resources are connected to the path I need you to stop worrying about what's already aligned for you the resources are on the pan the resources are on the path you can't stand so here we go verse 11 whatever town or village you enter search for someone worthy for worthy person there and stay at their house until you leave as you enter the home give it you're greedy if the homeless is serving let your biddies rest on it if it is not let your peace return to you verse 14 if anyone will not welcome you or listen to your orders shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town did you say argue with them did it say fight with them what did it say shake the feet does not get these feet moving I don't know what I'm talking to right now but why do you keep arguing with people that aren't cannot bless you to begin with that don't get you guys is called you to be what are you trying to clean yourself to the people all you gotta do is just shake the dust off your feet and eat moving they will get it eventually and if they do that's on them not on you why do we feel like we got so much to prove to people that cannot make us and I break us they cannot make us they cannot hire they cannot fire us let's stop the bird trying to prove something to somebody the only person we gotta prove something to is ourself that's it because God already knows what we can do yes that I don't have to prove anything to God God already knows he created you so he knows what you do but I sometimes they prove I am gonna cause me to be so as I'm on this journey of things I'm not trying to prove anything to you sometime I'm trying to prove some stuff to me because God has revealed some things to me about Who I am and I'm saying lord I need some proof help me please Who am I talking too long it don't be quiet on me anybody ever been there if you need some proof of God what are you doing come on I need some help lord I need you Lord I got think I'm getting weak disprove please I'm coming right back to the Word of God just just brought this to my memory over though this is hashed weekend on Saturday night I had the blessing of going to Kirk Franklin's birthday party he's a close friend and he surprised all of us by having Denzel Washington come by it was awesome but it was not Denzel the actor they came it was truly Denzel the teacher that was there and for almost a half an hour he did talk to us about Hollywood he talked to us about Jesus [Applause] [Music] and I said oh Lord I need help in this area he said the more mature you get the less faith you need the more mature and faith you get the less evidence you need [Music] he said the more mature the boy who grow in faith the less evidence you need because you already know it's gonna happen I said lord help me I said leave some evidence I think I got to grow up there thank you my brother we do this together I said no but you're me because I need some evidence right now in then hey man hey man going back to the word shake the dust off your feet leave when you leave the home or town verse 15 I tell you the truth it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town verse a scene I am sitting you out like sheep among wolves there oh this is Jesus Tom I need you to be wise as snakes and innocent as doves I wanted to talk for a few moments on the Mamba mentality [Applause] I know that all of us were shaken up when we heard the news of Kobe his daughter and the others that were on the helicopter that went down and I don't profess to tell you that I understand God's will in this matter I don't I'm just like you trying to sort it out and may not give the answer till we get to heaven and I have to make peace with that and we wrestle with that and understand that we live in a world where God's ways are not our ways and his thoughts not our thoughts and why you call some before others don't know yeah and I'm not ashamed or afraid to admit to you that I don't and so in in trying to wrestle with well what does this lost me I found myself being drawn to videos of Kobe doing various interviews and and one of the most consistent things that will come up when you search for Kobe Bryant videos in addition to his highlights it's the Mamba mentality see back in 2003 Kobe was watching the movie Kill Bill and there was a villain in the movie and his name was black mamba and and now he was an assassin and Kobe said I want to take on this black a moniker because that describes what I do on the court and so he began to call himself the black mamba to articulate his level of play and his mentality that led him to become one of the greatest champions that we have ever known to play basketball we are beginning to look at that and began to look at what a Black Mamba is the Black Mamba is one of the most venomous snakes that we know predominantly in the southern African region and majority of people are very afraid of the black mamba and that same type of feeling was the fear that Kobe tried to inject into every opponent Betty face begins to not only die into this mama mentality and begin to get so much knowledge out of what he was saying I began to realize this is how we can take something positive from what he left us he has given steps tips and tools on how to be successful so often when were sad we just allow that sadness to sit in our spirit but what if we use that sadness to actually do something positive it make a positive impact in the world and in our lives they actually think about Kobe is there no matter whether you are a fan of his or not what everybody can say is the way that he was on that court was greatness but initially thing that he said was initially his goal was I want to be the greatest player on the planet and he became the greatest player on the planet he realized he got it wrong he said it's not just about me being great on the court he says more importantly it's better that I'm great off the court and so when you look at specifically as you transition into retirement so much of what he did was how do I make the world a better place how do i improve the greatness of every single person I come in contact with this is why he started the Mamba Academy to instill in a young age this idea of empowerment through greatness and excellence so the question I have for you how excellent are you living in your my friend oh well I wish we had the cameras to follow us every day I wish that I could screen you the footage from the movie of your life or the reality show of your life and so often we're mad at God because we want something that have not happened yet come on but may I see the peer consideration are you living in a way that actually produced the result you were praying for [Music] it wasn't enough if Kobe just prayed Lord make me the greatest basketball player in the world and he said Lord why have you not made the greatest basketball player in the world so often we laugh but then when we look at our life we do a similar thing the mama mentality he said one of the things he said he said the reason why I can be so confident on the court is because I've prepared myself he said he said he said I would run through as many scenarios as I could in practice so then when I was on the court in the game I would already be prepared we've always wanted to happen see that sounds like fate to me before I'm actually on the court I've already run through it what I need to do on the pork I gotta talk to somebody right now you got to get up in the morning and not say Lord I'm gonna stay in this depression say uh-uh if you woke me up today I'm a because we're talking about the Mamba mentality you got to prepare in my book for success Commandments like I say something called pray and prepare right let me tell you if we're not gonna prepare why are we praying can I say if we're not going to prepare why don't we pray about it because the two go hand-in-hand say without words the Bible says is dead doesn't 1 right so that means we have to pray and prepare vision thing about hope is that a lot of the people that you play against again we're talking about the mama mentality this is mama mentality and this is what he said was I want to explain this before I go further he says the mama mentality means everyday I'm trying to become better I'm in a constant quest to become the best version of myself if we have the mama mentality it means we are trying to become everything God created us to be on this earth and we will not rest until we become it and he said if there was anything that would not work towards that goal he would not do it [Applause] you know listen individually because if you know what God has called you to be then you have to ask yourself the question are the people you're hanging with taking you there or to get your way what's so interesting about Kobe talking about preparation talking about being ready to do whatever God has called us to do to become the best person that he has called us to be he said most of the people he would play against would practice to practice twice a day he said most people get around ten most of other players will get him around ten maybe they hit the gym ahead by you know 11 or noon they work out for two hours they take a break they work out one more time in the afternoon and then they go home eat whatever go to bed do it all over again he said well what is I woke up at 3:00 and not to the gym at four he said I could do four to six take a break he's that I could do nine to eleven takes a break he's not gonna do two to four to take a break and I can get in one more seven of nine take a break and do it again he said while others are getting into classes I'm did informed he said now in the moment you're not going to see a difference he said but over the years as I continue to do this he said the exponential growth in my skill level and there's they're not gonna be able to catch up so this is why if you go home and you just Google Kobe highlights there will be some moments where he is guarded people are in his face and he still makes the game-winning three what it's not about we did on the floor it's not when he get off the court when Jesus was sitting on the disciples I found it very peculiar that he said I want you to be wise as a snack and like wait a minute [Music] the buses Jesus does not start with I want you to be innocent as it does he said they never know I need you to understand I need you to be wise as a snake which means I need you to be intentional I need you to be focused I'm going to go after because there are people out there that may not know who I am unless you are sure you are discerning you are committed never watch to sleep go after what they are talking with the time base they scope it out they have focus they have strategy God says I'm gonna see first of all you gotta have strategy you're gonna be focused I love you too much I love you too much I love you too much to let you leave here fill it all flowery good but no change in your life I love this idea of this mom of mentality I have to ask you what are you hungry for what are you hungry for right now in life what are you hungry for what do you want what does it cover what's your passion what you trying but get you up every day and then I'd ask you another question how intentional are you being about making sure you did how intentional how are you managing your days because see one of the graves again one of the greatest gifts I believe that that Kobe left us with his knowledge on how to become great and maximize who we are they started in the places that nobody ever sees huh Nolan how's the preparation life it's Netflix stealing your destiny is Instagram stealing your inspiration come on is Twitter take your treasure do you all have everything God's promised you are you where God has told you you would be no okay who is not where God has called you to be a knowing he does not have what God has called you to have it you know it Oh what time do come on mr. su wait wait with it was even to see who's talking all right that's all of us pretty much right here's the key [Music] it all starts with the decision to often read aloud what happens in life to take us out of what God has told us here's what I mean by that well that's in the mumble mentality so if God would be able to Kobe Kobe you have the skill level to be one of the greatest players in the world right but it's gonna be about your focus if you're disciplined in your practice if you ever becoming Co we talked about there was one summer before he went to the NBA where he stepped on the court and the whole summer he said he didn't even score a point he couldn't make a shot now here is actually thing most of us we misinterpret what is happening to us and we allow what is happening to us - Deena's out of the gun [Applause] [Music] and maybe God wrong maybe I'm not who God called me to be with he had allowed what he saw or he withdrew to disrupt who he knew he was we would not be talking about Kobe Bryant today I need to know your greatness will write your eulogy your greatness will write your eulogy your greatness will write your eulogy so let's also watch this watch this here's what's so fascinating about this situation when you look at him not scoring any points here's what he said happened that's someone his father came up to him and said I love you it is for no point or if you're 60 and he said knowing that he had his father's love is what helped me stay in the belief of who he was I need you to know God loves you and there's nothing you can do about and when you know you have it's love that you can rest because that's your insurance policy right all things work together for the good of those that love him and are called according to his purpose amen now here's what's so interesting when God has revealed to us who we are we have to make a decision to believe it and align our life accordingly we things happen to us we have to resist the temptation to misinterpret what's going on but you just so often let's say I know there's a lot of actors in the house and you may be going to auditions and you're like I'm not booking anything what's going on god I thought I'm supposed to be an actor or you know promises this is what you call me to do but I'm not booking anything and every time I go in they say no and you're not the right this Asia not the right there see there's a there's a tendency that this interpret what's happening right where you start to be journalized though rejection mmm not realize if I think about it as if you're a singer a snakes like I know who I am I know what I'm supposed to get and if I don't get the first word I'm gonna keep on going I get the next one and I don't get the next round I because I know what [Music] we're talking about the bubble mentality no let me tell you something listen I've been in the church all my life so there is greatness you're here too often we misinterpret what happens to get us out of our identity every rejection you place is like be on the court and you continue to shoot you learn as much from a rejection as you do from an opinion okay let me okay I will just stay on acting example for a minute right okay keep keep going to the word tell my father mentality if you're an actor you're not looking you guys okay googoo googoo all right so what are you just right let me be with the acting coach right let me let me let me actually keep running my life let me try to go off-book right let me make sure that our study not only my lines but let me get as much a background on what this projects about so that I can study what's going on before I even get in the room because all the preparation I do out there it's going to show up in here we just you learn the lines don't even know what the movies about you did not say man I know what I'm talking about you forget my other topics of producing all right stop I know okay now we'll just company that learn your lines do plays what I will again he'll understand all right well the only said over a few side well guess what you can research who's the producer who's the director what are they done before what's the type of content that they do you know you can get a whole lot of information about what you're getting ready to do even that information I provided for you what does if you have a mama mentality it means you're hungry press information public to figure out your department decision what is your decision what is your decision have you decided that you are going to be who God called you to be have you decided you're going to follow him have you decided because if you have not decided nothing I'm saying tonight will make a difference in your life it will just feet they will just be great words that will go in and know what because you have not decided but I encourage you to make the decision I am who God has called me to be and I will do what he has called me to do period is the story yes what's the weight you think about the Mamba mentality one of the things that Kobe said in one of his interviews he said you will lose yourself if you connect who you are to what you do okay let's break it down what is he Kobe price because of all the shots he made or was he Kobe Bryant because he knew he was Kobe Bryant did he eat the shots to validate it right so often we wait to be happen unto them Oh once I get in this house once I get this child once I I think that promotion once I get the thing then I will have arrived and I'm just happy able to breathe the sign of release literally may I submit their consideration if you're not happy happy then here's why this identity piece is critical again going back to my mentality as a snake question what it is or does it judge what it is by how it eats or how much food you can get no this is what I am right why do we have such a problem accepting who we are why because here's what happens when you and I can't accept who we are we allow others to get us off course I've been married eight years right so okay I'm ready to use a man I'm okay but before I was married I was dating now it's interesting when you don't have focus as a single person if you ain't got no focus what happens you things a lot of people it's so important just own your identity because as you as you own who you are and you decide this is who I am it will help clarify all the decisions that come after that no no no I'm not gonna date you I'm no no no because I Know Who I am [Applause] I messed up [Applause] even anybody ever like you just get up take the same time over and over Margie right okay okay all right all right when you know who you are it helps you make decisions for that person if God has called you again will say on the actor if God has called you to be one of the greatest actors on the face of the planet right make decisions that the greatest actor on the face of the planet would make don't wait just like oh don't make those doses well he said that it's an actor nobody can outwork them even now he's doing Shakespeare 65 years old is he speeding to the location before anybody else he knows his whole his whole heart their answers part are you letting laziness are you just letting lazy straight-out laziness steal the precious deeds of your destiny I don't know I'm talking to you right now but but when you think about it if you are the greatest actor then what a great actors do they were they study they prepare they do whatever they have to do to become whatever the part needs them to become thank you when it's time that the during says action they've already gone through this body work this helped because if you have not prepared in the acting sense the director says action he might be good for two or three tanks but if you have to prepare who'd he say yo o or she says we have to take seven I need you to through this a little smaller if you have prepared you can't deliver you just can't before but when you know who you are and you have a clear identity you have made decisions for that identity that have prepared you for the opportunity this is why it's important you gotta know who you are but don't ever it to what you do right I know okay okay so let's say I wanted to you know reproduce right so I'm very producers okay the man you know let's say my last movie didn't work oh Jesus yeah my great mother's right yeah because everybody misses shots a lot I thought such a this is the what you mean right so I can't allow my identity to be caught up in the successes or the failures I am about way to be be you are not being GD you already turned you never say I'm already that turn to your other neighbors saying I gotta start acting like it no no thing I really gotta start acting like it a few more key bits from the mama mentality and we're going to we're gonna close one of the keys that he talked about was out working everyone get up in the morning how late you stayin up at night [Music] I was reasonable and I'm gonna I'm gonna butcher the quota because I don't remember it or me no but basically it was saying scientifically it's proven those that wake up earlier are happier more productive less addicted to substances and usually tend to live out their dreams more than those who stay up there that's what the science says the research days now am I saying don't stay up late I'm not saying that I'm just saying is you're staying up late what do you have to show for potentially c'est la what do you ever show for what I can say that my own experience when I get up early in the morning I happen to the Daisy thing doesn't happen to me when I could have early I'll be able to say okay here's my intention here's what I'm gonna do here's how this is gonna play out and when I'm when I'm really good the night before I prepare my outfit I know what I'm gonna wear [Applause] so I could have been avoided being proud you have a good time I've know what I'm wearing I'm not stressed about it my breakfast is ready to go I'm ready to get the back key though most the time I get up usually around 5:30 I'm using the gym my sins I try to get in the office you know not 8:30 no later than 9:00 I've hung the company is my company sometimes I'm the only one there you and I were great because he made us that way right but we've gotta have a work ethic that aligns with our identity amen I don't want laziness to steal your destiny am I saying there are not periods where you can kick back and relax of course I'm not saying that but what I'm saying is if you are perpetually outsourcing what needs to be done today to tomorrow you do that consistently I would argue you're allowing laziness to rahu it is yours one of my mentors will spin and one of the devout most valuable lessons he taught me was he said a lot of people can work hard he said but very few can work long he basically said that you know and in so many words that the race is not given to the Swift but those that endure to the end he says there's a lot of people around me that can work hard and starts but they cannot be consistent I challenge you this year to work hard and distinct consistent to stay committed seriously because the more you keep working your plan you're gonna see your plan work the more you keep wanting your plan you're gonna see your plan work like I'm not I'm not saying something to you that sounds good I'm literally saying I know it's gonna work I know it I know it so what does this mean this means that in order to use this mama mentality in a successful way you may have to change your routine right okay so what is that what does that look like you got to step back and say okay how do I get off the hamster wheel of my day what is the one thing I could change to create a new routine so for me one of the things I started to do was y'all never been a big journaler but I was reading this book that is all about how to start your day in the morning and what I started to do was I said okay if I can get up in the morning do my prayer and meditation I could read the word and then you I started it it's so powerful I just started to take out a journal and when Who I am do you know how much of a defense this made in my life because as I started to write who I am it helped give me clarity for the day but literally people would call me and ask me to do something and I think my mind nothing wrong with you there yes absolutely and I would assign the requisite amount of work to do it well if you can't do it well I urge you not to do it if somebody I'm gonna get back on board and we're gonna be done if somebody right now is paying you if you are taking somebody's money and here you feel like I'm taking it because it's the only time I can get but you don't love it please do not allow yourself to work with less than you're capable of if somebody is paying you I urge you to over-deliver and don't allow your feeling about who they are sometimes New York or Boston like but with sometimes movie news that as an excuse not to work hard in those moments really for ourselves amen because the word says we don't work for Levi nothing work for him and I'm father in heaven will reward what's done in private opening that's the orders now [Applause] turn to your neighbor say name I need you to work a little you say how many work harder to do the other thing challenge yourself to grow don't be afraid of challenges to grow please if you want this moment mentality you cannot be afraid of growth period in the story if you go to the gym and you do the same exercises guess what you're gonna plateau why does your body gets used to it you don't grow anymore don't be afraid to take on an expansion of your assignment that comes with some challenges you don't know how you're gonna solve right because the challenges will help you grow one of the things that's so fascinating about an actual snake you know one of the things that also things do which is fascinating as they get bigger they has to shed the old skin [Applause] which means the old you spam and not only become but the minute over territory already we're talking about the mob mentality don't be afraid to challenge ourself right now I asked myself where this is he not yet listen I'm letting go into my private thoughts okay don't my family's time just tell you what I think all right give the boys one of my head Hey how much can I take off where is my lumina right and I don't know so you know my goal in life I'm here I need her as a vessel to help inspire and inform and be a spirit leg communicator that's my new so what is it I do I'm here to help people because we've God created them to be and get them closer to him whether it's through writing books making movies being on television doing social media that's why I'm here that's everything I do is related to that one of them and you can go back other than my entire body of work and it's all MIT together too for you if you watch one of my movies it's gonna make me get closer to God if you read one of my books doing the information to excel in your life your career or your relationship if you follow me on social media you're going to be inspired and motivated and inform it that's what I'm here to do is to help you now in that I challenge myself to grow all the time how so recently I oppose the deal with Paramount to make movies right so I closed that deal right and then I closed the new deal for notebook right that'll come out next year comes to me and says hey we saw this article you wrote which you want to do an audio-only book and then this please accompany I can't say but they came to me and said we know we can't do a pair of milestone for you but we want to be business with you anyway we don't deal with you you know we get ready right now something a big television network came to me and said we wanna do a deal with you as a producer we just closed that deal just [Music] what you do and I said Lord how we gonna do this go ahead fill these deals and assignments and all this stuff and God said stop it stop it if I called you to it the house is dark business in it don't be afraid to grow I'm sharing this with you because these are all opportunities for me to grow how we all grow we don't see am I excited about it I am why because I want to see where God wants me to be a man remain curious about what God wants you to be that was one of the things that was so fascinating watching so many of these Kobe videos was that he said that he would ask the magic magic what were you feeling in this morning on the floor when you're going through this what was happenin there he said he would ask the grace different questions he says he was always curious about how to become better don't get complacent let your curiosity push through your complacency all right okay last thing and then we're done um he said one of the things that is critical is the Keith : some of you you're here but you stopped you stopped believing you stopped praying you stop preparing you stop hoping you stop believe me some of you have even stopped it there will be things that happen to us traumas and tragedies and challenges that will stop us in our tracks that will completely not the wind out of our sails it's gonna happen the rain falls on the just and the unjust that's what the words the key it's not when those moments happen the key is how do we respond to one of the most critical things in life is to keep moving to keep going yes I'm hurt I don't have one of the answers but I'm decided Who I am so even in the midst of the hurt I can keep moving in the direction of people [Applause] it's time to move in what you went through was real but even the the Israelites had a specific time to mourn the loss of Moses and then God said yo morning time is up you gotta get up and go to the promised land I know Moses it's not listen he's not gonna make it with you I know I know you're sad about that but you gotta keep movin you gotta keep going I know that some of us in this room have experienced so much loss we have every reason to stop and slow down however I believe that if we have lost people and life was cut short in them one of the best ways to honor their legacy is to complete the work my father died when I was nine years old he died of a heart attack at the age of 36 and my older brother was I was 12 I was nine when younger brother was just as when he was five he was going to turn States later on that year died of a heart attack he was an alcoholic my uncle were alcoholics my grandfather and grandmother were alcoholics and my father was the the first one in the family to die at 36 now there was a lot of work in him that the world never got a chance to see through him but me and my brothers make the decision we will complete the work so tomorrow as I suspect later today but that's not just about the bar turn to your neighbors say it's still on the move again turn to your neighbor say you've got to keep all turn to your other things the output to keep going [Applause] this past Sunday morning before 7:00 a.m. there was a church call Our Lady Queen of Angels the Newport Beach father Steve reported right before 7 a.m. Kobe and his daughter chichi came into service as reported they took communion and they had prayed and he did not want to disturb any of the prisoners so it was done very discreetly a few hours later we all know what happened why do I share this with you I believe we can successfully extrapolate that they make peace with God so there is no confusion about the future but the question is have you maybe have you made peace with have you really reconciled in your heart who he is and have you made a commitment that you're going to follow him and give him your life when we give God our life whether it's here or whether we have a lot of time in this earth or not
