The Graham Norton Show S11E03 Matt LeBlanc, Zac Efron, Lee Mack, Marina and the Diamonds

one of my guests tonight is starring in a big new romantic movie so to get us in the mood i've got all the ingredients for romance music flowers oh and a little glass of wine oh hello everyone tonight on the show we have all singing all dancing all gorgeous zac efron is here from the fabulous marina and the diamonds and uh for the american guest ladies and gentlemen what an exciting time to be in the country hey hey hey yeah exactly three months from today it's the start of the olympics oh oh lots to live up to isn't there because you know the beijing olympics had an opening ceremony that featured traditional chinese music dancing with thousands of synchronized performers moving as one excellent excellent we've got a similar thing planned in the stadium that's my feeling about it a lot to look forward to over the next few months the famous torch is going to be carried to the olympic stadium ah that's the torch it'll be passed all around the country until it finally passes through hackney the great thing is though it's got everyone in britain fitness crazy hasn't it there are some brits heading off to try out the new running track and uh here's the new running track after they finished let's get some guests here he is hollywood do you two know each other i thought have you met before yes just about a couple minutes ago yeah oh charms man oh right oh yes because lead on the end did you just say lee down the end that's where you are yeah absolutely i think it's going to be some sort of raffle i appreciate my my purpose on this over tonight it's like the three ages of showbiz isn't it it starts off like that then it gets a bit like that and then you're haggard like this get yourself over here i have actually i've i've met uh well i haven't met but i sort of met you before well i'm not really met i was uh well i was in america about five years ago that's right i was so excited yes and i was in a studio uh sort of car park about to have this meeting and i was very excited been to the states before and and and you went past on like a golf buggy at this studio which i presume you were making a show or it was a very bad golf shot you went past and i thought well you're yeah you're on telly i'm on telly i'll wave and i went hey nothing yeah well what do you expect after tonight after tonight and and zach i like the ways your friends use your fame as kind of a like a joke like like a game oh gosh yes they do yeah they do uh yeah we have a lot of fun my friends mess with it a lot but we can't take it too seriously i mean i'm just the same dude that they always knew that i grew up here so uh we'd drive around and if i'm riding shotgun uh if we pull up next to a bunch of girls in a car they always roll down the window and turn on a high school musical track and a red light and and we just i just stare forward like nothing's going on but we see how long it takes them to notice because some of them know the song go great song and then my friends start going yeah it's him it's him and then look at me and i go no it's not let's have to go is it really and i go no no it is it is it's it's pretty ridiculous when do you guys do that can i get in on that if we can if we combine forces if we combine forces don't judge me i don't want to come in your crappy little car music can have people screaming at me thank you having said that um i am free on sunday and you know what happened to me this is happened a long time ago i was in one on 101 heading to work one morning when we were still shooting friends and it was like gridlock traffic nobody's going anywhere yeah and they look at out the window and there's a girl in the car next to me and she's just rocking out to some song and it was when the friend's theme song was like number one on the radio or whatever and i put the window down and hear what she's listened to and i realized what she's listening to and she looks over at me and sees me freaks out takes her foot off the break and slams it and i can't go anywhere so i just put the window wow what happened i don't know the wine you spoke i don't know listen uh the lucky one you've just come from the premiere it did uh how was it it was phenomenal it was phenomenal everybody it's amazing man you guys have the best i have the best fans out here you're so supportive thank you so much guys the premiere was great so it's based on a book by nicholas sparks and of course he wrote the notebook and dear john he's become king of these big romantic novels so what's the the premise behind this one i play uh maureen logan tebow uh who is in his third tour in iraq and he finds this photograph out in the sand and uh when he goes over to retrieve it an ied goes off just where he was standing the moment before so undoubtedly the picture finding of the picture saved his life um and when he gets home sort of a marine searching for a purpose back in in you know society again he decides that maybe the reason he's here is is because of this girl so he goes on a mission to find her and to to somehow thank her and that's how they meet and love story ensues it really is a lovely film and it is a proper sort of romance if it you know if you've seen the notebook or john you know it he doesn't shy away from the romance and in terms of being an actor are those really difficult of scenes when you're you know expressing your love in you know quite dramatic ways when you when you read them on paper for the first time that you always kind of go oh i'm gonna have to say that but you know what i've said way worse things in the moment and i think they worked um you know and it really does work you're watching two people that have had hard pasts uh and come together against all odds are able to still find love so i think it's a beautiful story and can i just say i was quite surprised it gets quite steamy the lucky one well it does i mean it was kind of raunchier than i was expecting it to be rancher steamy orangey what are you getting there you know they're not holding hands matt that's what i'm saying what are they holding i'm touching her i mean has your as your mom seen it yes i was at the premiere actually and she was like two seats away from me and uh i was by the end of those scenes i'm always like down my chair like this going oof but i i hear my mom chuckling at the end going that's my boy it's not what you want to hear after sex and then and then my little brother's just going but yeah it she said the theater was dead quite and she said it too it was pretty yeah it was it was awesome all right the lucky one is gets its general release on the 2nd of may and we've got a clip and obviously it's a big romance but romance does not always run smoothly and uh there is an ex-husband on the scene and this is a scene between you and the ex-husband oh great how you doing you want a ride what do you want i want to get you a job all right you got to be tired of cleaning up dog by now i know some people i can make a couple calls and get you something worthy of a veteran what do you think hey you ought to listen to me you don't know who you're dealing with no i know exactly who i'm dealing with i've known guys like you my whole life you think a gun and a badge and a name make you something because you carry you better watch your mouth i'm done talking to you and the whole the whole film was filmed down around new orleans yes it was so this gave you access and i read this with interest to one of your favorite things swamps is this true that you like swamps i do man i think swamps do you guys get to show swamp people out here well apparently it is on here on the history channel does anyone watch the swamp people all right anyways the swamp the swamp the bayou the uh you know down down in louisiana um is i'll back you up i've seen that show i get a kick out yeah that's great shoot um alligators alligators for a living and it's it's a whole different i live in i live in california and it's amazing that uh this is the same country like it's it's very very wild west uh it's insane um but what we would do actually on the weekends out there i like to i like to get out there and go go really um you know do some some more adventurous things like backpack but we would take swamp tours and uh one of the things that we did um with the guide of course was go out and hunt some alligators but did you wrestle an allegation no no i did i did get on top of one at one point and i manhandled him yeah see that doesn't sound safe yeah that's how legal to be honest but i tell you what it's it's a rush man if you're looking for an adrenaline kick it's it's it's it's pretty insane okay it's down my list uh it's on there i actually brought a picture to you have we got it yes oh there you are oh my god yeah that's it that's really fun yeah i said cheese he's smiling yeah yeah yeah he looks like he's having the time of his life i love that you're doing it in leather loafers it's like you're mocking the alligator in a minute that's actually i'm i'm literally on set that's my wardrobe for the fans but it's not just things like that you you're into is it motorcycles you're into i'm not really into them nah but uh i know how to ride one for sure so tom cruise taught you how to ride a motorcycle yes actually the the only way i learned how to ride a motorcycle was because tom cruise um i met the guy the night before at a party and he said do you ride motorcycles and i said no and uh he said do you want to learn i said yeah sure uh he goes what are you doing tomorrow i said nothing and he said come over i'll teach you how to ride a motorcycle so the next day i show up tom cruise pulls up in a red ducati literally the one from mi3 wow he like rolls up and he put me on a dirt bike and taught me how to ride a motorcycle that day and so it was i immediately think what is the insurance premium for tom cruise and zac efron on a like dog from churchill is going no no no no no you're really going to explain that joe you know it's not worth it it's not worth it when i ate but when i go down at the end of the day if it was on a motorcycle being taught by tom cruise i'd be a a proud proud man that'd be a glorious death it'd be true hollywood story on repeats because are you a pedro head uh i've got a lawnmower you think your anecdote's good i was taught to uh use it by uh noel edmunds really oh yeah and if i was to die with that lawn mower you've just finished uh the second series of episodes and it starts here on may the second i believe may 11th may 11th i now believe yeah may 11th may 11th and can i say because you the last thing you hear was the first series and because you were on obviously i watched an episode of episodes but then i watched the whole series and genuinely loved it i really enjoyed it really look forward to it yeah i thought it came out pretty good it's pretty funny i got a great a great cast you know and and uh the writing is just brilliantly funny and warm at times and i'm really really happy with it and because the the writers of friends are writing it and they knew you and they're writing the character matt blanc right before it gets a little confusing yeah it does the first season i mean they painted you quite dark and you did it all are they pushing it further and further now there's a little more um emotional dismantling of matt leblanc in this one yeah it's uh it takes it a step further and uh paints me in a little bit even darker light i don't know what's happening in season three well we have a clip this is probably the most politically incorrect clue yeah this is a fabulously dark version of matt leblanc here we go she's the girl next door if you live on crazy street i don't know she'd been stalking you probably 15 years 15 years i met her when she was like eight she was one of those make-a-wish kids oh my god friends was her favorite show and her one last wish was she wanted joey to take her to disneyland so i took her to disneyland she was a great kid very sweet but then she didn't die i know look don't get me wrong it's a great organization but they really should check this stuff out i mean come on so then so then she just kept living and living but she was still totally into me cards and emails and calling all the time i i was nice about it at first but she started showing up places i was gonna be i had to get a restraining order 15 years and you never encouraged her at all never like i said i was nice how nice i slept with her once what in retrospect probably a bad idea but she was 18 and really cute once her hair grew back i believe you were down in hell yeah what are you gonna do because here it airs on on bbc2 at 10 o'clock fridays uh may 11th first one but in america it plays on showtime what's the reaction of people in america to this version of matt leblanc well that particularly that particular version hasn't aired yet so i don't have to get back to you on that one i don't hope i don't get you know shocked because it must be hard for them to kind of because you know they think they know you because you know for 12 years you know you were joey in their lives but this is the documentary yeah well i mean it's it's funny you should say that because it's not a documentary it's this it's the character is i guess it's the public's perception of celebrity is this guy we've come up with so it's not really me it's not really me it looked terribly like you because i mean one of the things i didn't realize was that when friends started that it it wasn't one of those shows that built it was overnight the success of it pretty much uh it premiered like in the top 20 and then uh the first summer where it goes into reruns in the states is uh yeah look how old i am now it was like we showed a picture of puppies and then it was that first summer in reruns that it that it made it up into the top five and then it kind of stayed there for the whole 10-year run and did anyone prepare you for what was going to happen that you were going to get that famous yeah i mean if someone tells you that you kind of say it's like if someone says are you going to win the lottery tomorrow you go okay right sure but it was jimmy burroughs who directed the pilot and he directed like every episode of cheers and every episode of taxi and he's like this legendary television director and super nice guy super smart and he took us all to after we shot the pilot and the show got picked up he took us all to las vegas and we went to caesars palace for dinner we sat at the table right in the middle of the main dining room the big round table we sat there and had dinner and he looked at us all and he said this is like so this was so surreal he looked at us all and he said look around this is the last time the six of you are going to be able to sit like this in the restaurant and no one's gonna care and that was we were all like what are you talking and you know it's this guy talking and he's like a god in television so you have to believe him and he was he was uh he was kind of right right yeah it was uh it was a rocket ship ride it was a lot of fun we had a great time yeah and and zach when that happened to you because it was a similar thing where you were suddenly so famous were you sat down did anyone kind of warn you it was going to happen did anyone give you advice to disney how did disney have a department for that no i mean literally the conversation that he just said i can i that was exactly how it was you don't want to believe it you don't jimmy burns took you out today in all seriousness there's not a bone in your body that believes that that that it could happen you know and uh somebody up there is aware and says you know you should cherish this moment and uh i'll never forget i sat down for a conversation very much like that one a similar thing happened to me as well as my manager he took me out for dinner to nando i'll never forget i'll never forget he said to me he said look around get used to it i like it on the end ladies and gentlemen but the great thing that uh episodes has done that friends never could it has delivered a golden globe to your door uh congratulations you seemed you seemed not an actuary way you seemed genuinely shocked on the night oh my pants that was my that was my fourth nomination i was so prepared for them to say someone else's name i know the drill as soon as they don't call your name you just pop the champagne and start boozing it up it makes that bloom feel a lot better yeah and they they called my name and i i remember everything kind of slowed down and i went i said to myself wow that sounds an awful lot like my name i look up and everyone's looking at me and then it was just everything else was kind of uh very strange and blur and i remember claire danes had she had won earlier in the evening and she talked about it it was no for homeland homelessness of course and she talked about how when she won for i think romeo and juliet when she was like 13 she forgot to thank her mother and she in her acceptance speech really went off about how valuable her mother's been to her and how supportive so i all i could do was focus on that i was like oh my god she's right if they and i had something prepared just in case i was then i was focused totally on my mother and i was like okay now i don't know what i'm going to do i get them work my way up there and i look down in the crowd and the one you know everybody's staring at you and it's the weirdest thing you're on stage and you recognize everybody in the audience you know what i mean and it's not like no one's on like a shitty show or movie it's all like top shelf people you know i mean and i looked down and made eye contact with steven spielberg and i just felt myself start to sweat and i don't remember much yesterday but it is fantastic and well deserved well listen uh not all not all awards are as glamorous as the golden globes or indeed the baftas uh here's a picture of johnny depp trying to smile as he holds this is the prestigious bahamas international film festival career achievement award looks like they found nemo is it something you'd see in the airport gift shop and then who buy that award hey sean connery's got a lovely lifetime achievement awards it's sort of like a believer it's like really yeah where am i gonna put this here's golfer this is a golfing award one by the golfer uh christy kerr that one's fun i don't see the problem with that at all apparently it's the angle of the picture sure it is yeah finally it's exactly the excuse my wife used but that's also photographed and finally this is this is genuine this is the american army national guard wrestling awards everyone loves them everyone loves them if they don't love him it's been a poor night on bbc one because this is your third appearance it is a third i can only apologize i didn't i don't do the schedule because would i lie to you was on it have you seen what i lie to you no it's a brilliant show and they're not going out have you seen not going out marvellous he's been this it's terrible not going out it's back for its fifth series yes this is that's fantastic that is really good we've got comedy balloons and everything so now what's going on because it is in instagram there is a kind of will they won't they you and uh lucy so in series five is it going to happen well it's that thing i don't know i don't know what we should do with it really i'm not going to give away whether we do what we don't but it's it's hard to make that decision well you probably know this do you do it what do you do if you do it then people don't like the change do they if the people get together but if yeah it's the anticipation it seems but how many times can you write that they don't get together so i don't know maybe maybe i turn out to be a closet homosexual that's all that always works perfect i'm thinking they're going that angle this year and that would make sense of the title yes not coming out and you did lose a lot of weight i did i lost uh i lost almost two stone in about two and a half three months yeah how did you do it well i did a diet i don't want to recommend cause it's really bad for you but you know which one it is it's all the all the people kidney stones and kidneys kidney stones oh pounds you wanna know how many pounds don't you yeah how many pounds are there no i never know i have so many american people 14 14 oh i feel 13. 14. it's pronounced why am i on a british chat show and i'm in the minority 28 pounds she lost 28 pounds i lost no i didn't i lost two stone no you joined in yeah i lost almost two stone here because i started to get a bit vain and i thought i had to strip off 28 is 28 pounds yeah but i don't want you to say pounds i want you to get all bricks i want everyone to understand what we're talking about i want them to go wow that's a lot all right come on let's not forget the europeans how many kilos is that great 13 kilos 13 kilos excellent well done no one cares about the swedes why did you do it well because i had to strip off twice and uh see that one screen for me one screen and she's with me you came with me so yeah i i got a bit vain i thought i just i just started i was 14 and a half stone that's like that's like a hundred pounds so i i i got i got i got a bit bigger because i've got um you see you get away with it the problem is if you're if you put on a bit of weight but you're like me and you're a horsepower you know you've got the horse face and the plate everyone's horse face which is long or round face so graham is the epitome of the plate i'm the epitome of the horse you're a plate he's a horse okay should i should have said stallion matt's like uh uh like a platter i would say you think so you're somewhere between a horse and a so because i've got the horse face people assume that i'm probably skinnier than i am but i've got we need to strip off it's like a body like old man's steptoe just go straight to the ground old man stepso was a really good looking guy in the 70s so i decided to i decided to try and lose a bit of weight and you've got a picture of your new body there you are now you are going to be breathing you are breathing in i am breathing in the yeah and but also uh i did the classic comedian vanity thing of thinking oh the joke's more important than me strip it off so i'd written that and i thought oh no i've got to get all my clothes off so i got worried and so i try and lose a bit of weight so listen uh not going out is back uh next friday at 9 30 and we've got an exclusive clip from next week which is episode four i believe wow is it is it don't ask me i don't know what's going on it is it's episode four here we go must be an easier way of taking off those trainers tonight on channel five the tragic story of the girl that was born with no knees or elbows i can't believe you're doing all this training just for a fun run fun run it's not exactly a serious race is it i bet you'll see more honey monsters than kenyans it's still 10 kilometers imagine having to run to the supermarket then back then again then back and then again and then back easy you reckon yeah i'd use a cardo you may not know that not going out so obviously very popular here it's been sold to a hundred and twenty countries yes i believe it's phenomenal yes well aren't they remaking it well there's talk about being remade in germany and uh they've already i think they've cast it and if you want to know what how people perceive you it's probably best to look at the person playing you in another country and you know listen i'm i'm no zach but i've got something to cling on to and the guy that's playing me is a hunter well we we didn't have a picture have you we do a picture of him this this is lee in germany in germany what is that that's rough man and shoes but shows also get dubbed and things because you've met is it your spanish self you've met zach yes yeah is he now the official zach would he be doing that that's what happens once you get a voice internationally um they that's the one that stays with you for all time are you pleased with him man you know the firs the first time i i went to it was actually gosh it was i think it was high school musical three i went to the uh um i went i went to the um i'll never forget this i was sitting at the uh the spanish premiere and and they introduced the characters one by one uh first was corbin who played uh chad in the movie um but but he uh he he came out and had it had a great voice it was like i do oh my mother like a great great great deep rich voice i was like man i cannot wait to hear what my voice sounds like the girls come out and they're like uh my voice gets a big introduction you know my character gets a big dream he like turns around for his big first troy bolton line and it's surely all come on say emma come on and i'm literally i'm my jaws dropped and i was just going seriously is this good is this what is this going to be like this forever has the movie really come out can we have time to fix this is it uh no that's that's been your voice since high school musical won uh and they stayed that stays with you for forever no he can't be the lucky one you can't have him uh well i have not seen it yet but i'd be willing to bet that in the lucky one i'm going to be a marine coming out saying roger rogerson episodes of friends they're both everywhere episodes is 180 countries or something crazy just saying same guy plays me in germany have you met have you met the other mats have you heard the other maps no i've heard some of the voices they sent us a long time ago on friends they sent us like a dvd they gave it to us as a wrap kit for near like just one scene like one from japan one from spain one from german it was hysterical to hear all the voices and the japanese guy that does me was the funniest i'm not gonna do an impression yeah i don't want to offend anybody do the catchphrases then translate i mean if you're walking down the champs-elysees people are going come on server or you know do they get like you know v-gates do they just run out now those are my two that's how they are going i would imagine they try and translate it as straight across as they can because it doesn't mean that your daughter still does it to you yeah but she you know my daughter she's such a chip off the old block like my sense of humor is if i know something irritates you i'm gonna play on it and key on it as much as i can so so one of my friends taught her that you know when she was really little you know you have to say what to to your dad you have to tell him you have to say how are you doing you have to say that she but she just to get just to irritate me she'll say how are you doing and she's she'll look at me like that and i say no no that's not the way we said it on the street yes yes it is no no it's not i mean it goes like this no it's how are you doing no no it's not and we have these like long discussions about it and i know she knows how to say it right uh music time now uh this singer is having the year of her life and is about to release her second album electra heart performing the new single primadonna it is marina and the diamonds yeah all i ever wanted was would you do anything for me buy a big diamond ring from me beauty queen on a silver screen living life like i'm in a dream i know i've got a big ego all i ever wanted but the boy i'm with the boys i really don't know why the rise and but it's always all i ever wanted was good hello very good thank you so much for that uh the single is out at the moment and uh the new album is out on the 30th of april yes oh very exciting and how big you are you're on tour with coldplay i am yeah so is that the states you're doing that um i'm doing um all of the stadiums in europe and then the arena like in america so wow what an amazing experience i know well listen good luck with the single good luck with the album and thank you very much for coming no no you're fine you're fine he's insecure i told worse stories than that today don't trust me you didn't put a chicken outfit on one more let's see hello hi graeme hello they love you they love you checkup i know like you have to like they're gonna have to like have the sticky pads in here you have to strip from the waist up well i did that and then everything was fine and i went to put my clothes back on and i was like oh my god i can't find my bra like where is my bra so i was looking around for it and it was underneath the bed so but i couldn't reach it underneath the bed so i had to put my arm between the bed and the wall to reach like over the bed and um my arm got stuck like actually wedged between the bed and the wall and i was there for a good 20 minutes shouting at people to come rescue me and all the doctors came back in and i was just stuck naked don't you dare you're very embarrassing start naked leave her alone it's not only unusual well i hope you're wearing a bra It's the way he doesn't really treat them like they are better than other people. It seems to make them more open and comfortable as it isn't quite a circlejerk like some other talk shows.
