it is that we are together to give glory and honor to god give thanks for all the visitors who are with us today acknowledging especially the students preparing for confirmation from our lady of guadalupe so we welcome you let's especially pray for them as they are on retreat for their confirmation we are so very blessed with a god who wants to fill us with all good things especially that beautiful virtue supernatural virtue of hope and what it requires is that we enter more deeply into the relationship with god so that we can receive all that he wants to give us so as we enter into this mass let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly seen in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and what i have failed through my faults through my fault through my misery therefore i ask also mary ever heard all the angels and saints and you my [Music] may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] [Music] is [Music] is [Music] is [Music] we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory [Music] lord jesus christ [Music] take away the sins of the world receive our prayers [Music] lord [Music] christ [Music] let us pray oh god who teach us that you abide in hearts that are just and true grant that we may be so fashioned by your grace as to become a dwelling pleasing to you through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of the prophet jeremiah thus says the lord cursed is the one who trusts in human beings who seeks his strength in flesh whose heart turns away from the lord he is like a barren bush in the desert that enjoys no change of season but stands in a lava waste a salt and empty earth blessed is the one who trusts in the lord whose hope is the lord he is like a tree planted besides the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream it fears not the heat when it comes its leaves stay green in the year of drought it shows no distress but still bears fruit the word of the lord [Music] blessed are they blessed are they who hope in the lord blessed are they blessed are they [Music] blessed indeed is the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked [Music] whose delight is [Music] blessed are they he is like a tree that is landed beside the flowing waters that yields his fruit into season and whose leaves shall never fade and all that he shall prosper [Music] blessed are they blessed are they [Music] shall be driven away by the wind [Music] for the lord knows the way of the just but the way of the wicked will perish they blessed are they [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters if christ is preached as raised from the dead how can some among you say there is no resurrection of the dead if the dead are not raised neither has christ been raised and if christ has not been raised your faith is vain you are still in your sins then those who have fallen asleep in christ have perished if for this life only we have hoped in christ we are the most pitiable people of all but now christ has been raised from the dead the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep the word of the lord you [Music] hallelujah [Music] rejoice and be glad your reward will be great in every [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you jesus came down with the twelve and stood on a stretch of level ground with a great crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people from all judea and jerusalem and the coastal region of tyre and sudan and raising his eyes towards his disciples he said blessed are you who are poor for the kingdom of god is yours blessed are you who are now hungry for you will be satisfied blessed are you who are now weeping for you will laugh blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude and insult you and denounce your name as evil on account of the son of man rejoice and leap for joy on that day behold your reward will be great in heaven for their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way but woe to you who are rich for you have received your consolation woe to you who are filled now for you will be hungry woe to you who laugh now for you will grieve and weep woe to you when all speak well of you for their ancestors treated the false prophets in this same way the gospel of the lord uh you when we as human beings have something that really stretches us meaning something that's really difficult we have a few options we can give up we can try to figure out what the problem is ourselves or we can search for deeper connections with god to help us be filled with what we need to persevere through the time of trial we know for example of course with covid all the things happening in the various parts of the world our country our church maybe our communities our families or ourselves whether it's physical trials emotional trials spiritual trials when things are difficult it stretches us and i love that expression that when the things get tough the tough get going right when it's tough do we give up or do we enter more deeply into god for the strength to persevere through the trial the beautiful imagery today in this first reading from the book of jeremiah it speaks about those who trust in the lord those who are filled with hope so when we trust we have a confidence and hope is this beautiful beautiful virtue that god wants to give to us it's a spiritual virtue to be filled with confidence in god that he will be with us through all things and that what he has promised to us in his great love for us that we would be with him in heaven if we choose to be in relationship with him draw ever closer to him and to love him and to love others and ultimately to love ourselves as he loves us but to love well we are stretched because we're all limited we have weaknesses and then when it gets difficult it gets harder so here's the beautiful image from this prophet isaiah that we heard today blessed is the one who trusts in the lord whose hope is in the lord in other words when our trials are difficult do we turn to god do we place our hope our trust our confidence in him even when it's difficult he goes on to say he is like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the streams it fears not the heat when it comes its leaves stay green in the year of drought it shows no distress but still bears fruit how is that possible if we think of the drought this last year as i've spoken to a few of the farmers they've spoken about how when it was dry earlier in the season that it seemed that the plants were going deeper to find the source that they needed of moisture in order to bear fruit to survive to thrive if these roots would have stayed shallow they would have withered and died if we stay shallow in our relationship with god we ourselves will wither and die spiritually and then it's so easy to give in to discouragement and sadness to lash out in frustration or anger to get deeply saddened to be depressed but if we stretch even more for god when things are really dry in our lives someone going through health issues someone going through spiritual trials someone struggling within relationships if we can tap into the source of life like the roots of a plant go deeper go deeper into god find what god wants to give us by allowing ourselves to be stretched in the time of difficulties so that we become more dependent upon god and less upon ourselves and we don't give up when things are difficult what happens in times of testing is spiritually god allows us to grow in virtue in positive habits of choosing to go deeper even when it's difficult to choosing to trust god to have hope in god when we don't see that the answer looks good but we learned from this season of drought here in the dakotas that later in the season of this year the rain started to come in august myself even growing up on the farm thought it's too late only to discover later was not too late the roots by going deeper had sustained long enough and when the moistures came and with the extended fall that we had the fruitfulness was better than expected at least for some farmers in some areas the same is true for our spiritual lives brothers and sisters this world this time that we live in is filled with lots of difficulties and it can affect us psychologically physically spiritually in so many ways but the more we allow ourselves in that time of dryness difficulty to stretch out to god god i need you fill me and we trust that he will send the reigns of his grace at the right time and we will flourish rather than to stay shallow in our relationship to give up on god or others and to turn to the things of this world or to lash out in ways that are not of god let's pray for the gra grace at this mass to be filled with that beautiful beautiful supernatural virtue of hope again that hope is that beautiful confidence in god that what he has promised to us that if we believe in him we will have eternal life and it's dry and it's difficult as we make our way through life but the fruitfulness will be ours for those who remain faithful and draw more closely to god relying on god rather than giving up or relying on ourselves let's pray for that grace for each other i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god's light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate to the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living in the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead the life of the world to god as we look forward to the resurrection and the life of the world to come we have every reason to be filled with hope that god will provide for us all of our spiritual needs as we humbly turn to him acknowledging what we ask for today and all of our needs for the church that she may draw her members to a greater trust in the promises of christ we pray to the lord [Music] for our leaders in government that they may be given the wisdom and insight to govern with integrity mindful of god's law we pray to the lord for peace in our world that leaders of nations will work together to create stability and tranquility especially in eastern europe we pray to the lord for those who are poor in spirit especially those who find life burdensome that they may be blessed through the healing presence of jesus we pray to the lord for the strengthening of the christian family that families may encounter the resurrected jesus through loving and forgiving we pray to the lord that our catholic family sharing appeal which begins the last weekend in february may be successful in our parish and throughout the diocese so that we might provide for the spiritual needs of our people we pray to the lord for the spiritual and material needs of our parish that god would continue to bless us with all that we need to give him glory we pray to the lord for the faithful departed that all our brothers and sisters in christ may be experiencing the beatific vision in heaven we pray to the lord heavenly father and your good and gracious love we ask that you're and grant these prayers and fill us with all the spiritual things we need to rely on you always we ask this through christ our lord [Music] oh [Music] jesus [Music] is [Music] heart [Music] let us know [Music] god [Music] we [Music] is [Music] pray brothers and sisters the my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may this oblation o lord we pray cleanse and renew us and may it become for those who do your will the source of eternal reward through christ our lord lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for through his paschal mystery he accomplished the marvelous deed by which he has freed us from the yoke of sin and death summoning us to the glory of being now called a chosen race a royal priesthood a holy nation a people for your own possession to proclaim everywhere your mighty works for you have called us out of darkness into your own wonderful light and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim oh [Music] is is you are indeed holy oh lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and the working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you oh my god in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me jesus the mystery of faith [Music] we proclaim your death [Music] until you come again [Music] we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church in recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance of your lack especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all the saints and whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may the sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope and donald our bishop the
