name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the grace of our lord jesus christ in the love of god the communion of the holy spirit be with you all so good morning everyone i'm glad you're able to arrive safely i know the road is slippery because of the freezing rain and uh uh so welcome welcome to parisian of the saint mary's those who are visiting and those who are watching online and today is the first sunday of lent there's special graces available during lent for us to be able to look into our hearts mourn for our sin repent and return to the lord okay and all of us are called to do that okay so let's enter into this eucharist brothers and sisters has acknowledged our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have gravely sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and to you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may mighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Applause] let us pray grant almighty god to the yearly observances of holy land that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects to our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying when the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the lord your god you shall make this response before the lord your god a wandering armenian was my father he went down into egypt and lived there as an alien few in number and there he became a great nation mighty and populous when the egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us by imposing hard labor on us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers the lord heard our voice and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression the lord brought us out of egypt with a mighty hand and outstretched arm with a terrifying display of power and with signs and wonders and he brought us into this place and gave us this land a land flowing with milk and honey [Music] so now i bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you o lord have given me and moses continued you shall set it down before the lord your god and bow down before the lord your god the word of the lord so [Music] be with me lord when i am in trouble [Music] me lord when i am in trouble [Music] you live in the shelter of the most high who abide in the shadow of the almighty will say to the lord my refuge and my fortress my god in whom i trust be with me lord when i am in trouble no evil shall befall you no scores come near your death for he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways be with me lord when i am in trouble on their hands they will bear you up so that you will not dash your foot against our stone you will tread on the lion and the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot [Music] me lord when i am in trouble [Music] the one who loves me i will deliver i will protect the one who knows my name when he calls to me i will answer him i will be with him in trouble i will rescue him and honor him be with me lord when i am in trouble and be with me lord when i am in trouble [Music] a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you on your lips and in your heart that is the word of faith that we proclaim because if you confess with your lips that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and so is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all and is generous to all who call on him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord shall be saved the word of the lord [Music] you are the king the king of glory praise to you oh lord you are the king the king of glory [Music] man alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of god you are the king of the king of glory to you [Music] [Laughter] [Applause] jesus [Applause] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] the lord with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you jesus full of the holy spirit returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit in the wilderness where for forty days he was tempted by the devil he ate nothing at all during those days and when they were over he was famished the devil said to him if you are the son of god command the stone to become a loaf of bread jesus answered him it is written man does not live by bread alone that the devil let him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world and the devil said to came to you i will give their glory and all this authority for it has been given over to me and i give it to anyone i please if then if you then will worship me it will all be yours jesus answered him it is written worship the lord your god and serve only him then the devil took him to jerusalem and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple saying to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to protect you and on their hands they will bear you up so that you will not dash your foot against a stone jesus answered him it is said do not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every test he departed from him until an opportune time the gospel of the lord i'm sure all of us have our own favorite subject in school if you ask me what's my favorite subject it's recess i just like to play with my classmates you know during recess and the one thing that i really hate most is exams especially surprise exams uh so those who are studying don't don't imitate me okay i'm a bad example because i have bad study habits i would put to the end like maybe the day before the exam to really study i will cram and study so if there's a surprise exam i would usually fail okay and as we know there's a purpose for exam the teacher wants to know if you're learning from what uh what they're teaching to you right and if you keep on failing the exams i don't know about here in canada but in the philippines you don't go to the next grade level you repeat okay until you're able to learn what the teacher is teaching you then you go to the next level and our lord experienced that it's a time of testing okay the holy spirit led jesus to the desert and he was there for how many days 40. did he eat anything no he didn't eat anything he didn't drink anything 40 days can you imagine that for me one day of not eating i think i'll faint 40 days and and it and the enemy knows when the lord is very vulnerable that's why he was tempted the first temptation was to change the stone to bread okay and the enemy is is tempting jesus to to to commit the sin of the lust of the flesh the second temptation he the enemy showed all the the the kingdoms of the world and told him if you just bow down to me and worship me i will give it to you again the enemy is tempting jesus to sin with the lust of the eyes in a third temptation jesus was brought to the pinnacle of the temple and asked jesus throw yourself down if you're the son of god you will not get hurt the enemy was tempting jesus to sin with the pride of life that you could do anything and underneath all those three temptations is to doubt god's love it is also a test whether jesus really love god okay now the question that i would like to ask you did jesus suffer just three temptations or no no okay no okay in fact saint saint thomas aquinas said this because scripture it says in scripture in our gospel today and when the devil had ended every every temptation so saint thomas aquinas said scripture would not have said that once all ended the devil departed from him unless the matter of all sins were included in the three temptations already related so jesus all of us have experienced temptations all of our temptations jesus experienced that temptation and jesus as we know he was able to overcome all temptations and he was coding scripture one scripture after another he was coding scripture and when the enemy couldn't tempt him anymore it says there the enemy departed to find an opportune time so the lord was tested was tempted throughout his life especially when he was vulnerable in the agony in the garden when jesus was hanging on the cross jesus the enemy was tempting him to doubt god's love was tempting him whether he would obey or not obey god out of love okay and all of us are being tempted anyone here not being tempted would you like to raise your hand no all of us all of us are tempted right and the enemy is cunning baffling powerful and very patient okay he look he finds an opportune time to tempt us when we are very very very vulnerable we're tired lonely angry hungry whatever right that's why we need to be watchful we need to be watchful when we're being when we're vulnerable and when we're already being tempted we need to be watchful and the lord doesn't want us to fall into these temptations because in one the first letter of john chapter 2 verse 15 to 7 it says it says there do not love the world or the things in the world if anyone loves the world the love of the father is not in him for all that is in the world the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and the pride of life is not from the father the three temptations that jesus experienced okay the lusts of the flesh the loss of the eyes and the pride of life okay so continue and the world is passing away along with its desires but whoever does the will of god abides forever okay so i was thinking of an analogy to to tell you what are we experiencing when we're facing temptation and the spiritual life is like climbing a mountain okay and when we go to up to the mountain we will see boulders coming down upon us and those boulders are our temptation so what we have to do is to push that boulder and throw it aside okay now i don't know if you could relate with me because i struggle with this we i struggle from going from one extreme to another one extreme is that i push the boulder with my own strength and when i use my own strength i know i'm weak compared to the to to this temptation that is very powerful i will fail and when that happens again and again i fight i fail i fight i fail there will come to a point i will go to the other extreme i will give up fighting and just indulge how many of you have experienced going from one to extreme to another yes all of us okay and i'm sure i don't know if you have this prayer i think all of us would have this desire lord why don't you just take it away so that i will no longer struggle how many of you have said that prayer deep in your heart lord just take this away but the lord will not take it away without our cooperation okay without our cooperation saint augustine said without god we cannot without god we cannot fight temptation but without us god will not without our cooperation he will not remove the temptation so we have to do our part that's why the lord is teaching us the third option okay the third option is to surrender and we will not surrender if we're not humble enough to acknowledge that we are weak facing this temptation we will not surrender if we don't have faith that god has the power to overcome any temptation humility and faith would lead us to surrender okay and and by surrendering i'm not saying just praying lord i surrender and you see the temptation going away no it's not just by our words we need to show it by our action and by our action we need to imitate jesus okay i would like to share with you five things that jesus did okay that we could also apply into our lives when we're facing temptation the first one is we need to pray every day we need to pray prayer is a sign of humility that i'm weak but god has the power we need to fast jesus was fasting so when we fast we subdue our passion it weakens the flesh and strengthens the will okay we also uh should not be dialoguing with temptation jesus did that dialogue with the temptation if we're dialoging with temptation we're playing with fire and when we play with fire we will get burn right and the fourth thing that we could do is always have the word of god on our lips we need to read scripture we need to memorize scripture my favorite scripture passage is from 2 corinthians chapter 12 verse 9 to 10 my grace is sufficient for my power is made perfect in weakness whenever i fall it's not because there's no grace there is grace but i didn't trust in that grace therefore i rely on my own strength okay the last thing that we could do is to trust in the lord to trust in the lord in hebrews chapter 12 verse 18 uh hebrews chapter 2 verse 18 it says there because he himself suffered when he was tempted he's able to help those who are being tempted do you believe that do we believe that i'm asking you do we believe that okay so by doing these five things we're learning to surrender and when we surrendered we received the power to be able to overcome that temptation whenever there's a boulder that's going to come upon us the lord is just going to be there really to push it and throw it aside and all we could do is like that just pointing a finger because 80 percent of the strength really comes from him 20 comes from us as i said we need to cooperate okay and the model the one of the greatest model uh who exemplifies humility faith and surrender is saint the rest of the child jesus okay saint the rest of the child jesus wrote this in her diary in her in the other in her autobiography she wrote i am determined to find an elevator to carry me to jesus for i was too small to climb the steep stairs of perfection so he she looked at scripture on what will that lift would be to lift her up to the stairway of perfection and he found it in luke chapter 8 verse 16. where it says whoever is a little one let him come to me okay so she wrote this it is your arms jesus which are the elevator to carry me to heaven so there's no need for me to grow up in just the opposite i must become less and less less of me more of you lord that's what we have to do that's why we need to stay small stay little stay weak become like a child okay father mark for the past few sundays have been preaching about heaven and when i when i was listening to his preaching i just get excited about heaven are you excited about heaven yes right it's beautiful the lord desires all all desires all of us to go to heaven but not all will be able to enter heaven because our time here on earth is a time of testing do we really love god do we really trust in him because if we obey him if we love him we need to obey him right and so i would like you to to to think of temptations as like lessons okay whenever you're facing temptations this is the lesson some the lord is teaching me here to surrender and if you fail in that lesson the lord will give you that same lesson again it says right lessons uh lessons in this world will be repeated until it is learned until we learn to surrender okay and by learning to surrender we need to imitate saint therese of the the child jesus and by surrendering we will experience that power that power to be able to say no to sin and yes to god and by doing that you know sometimes we get overwhelmed oh my goodness how could i face all the temptations in in my life don't look at weeks months years coming ahead take it one day at a time or you could even take it one temptation at a time by that it's not overwhelming okay so by surrendering you receive that power to be able to say no to sin and yes to god and by doing it by that one temptation at a time and when you die you go to heaven [Music] let's now stand to profess our faith we'll do the apostles creed i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and jesus christ his only son our lord he was conceived by the power of the holy spirit and born the virgin mary suffered at a pontius palace was crucified die and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the lord the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the dead the wife amen in the spirit of jesus who offered fervent prayer to his father in the desert let us pray as god's repentant people [Music] for pope francis archbishop marcel and all ordained clergy that they may have unfailing faith as they proclaim god's name to his people we pray to the lord r for world leaders that they be united in the commitment to protecting the dignity of all people and to bringing an end to violence in any form we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for protection for the ukrainian people at home and for those who are now refugees we pray to the lord for our parish community that we be strengthened in our commitment to prayer fasting and almsgiving as we journey through lent we pray to the lord for those who have health struggles especially connie white that they receive the support and healing they need and for those who have died especially larry sure that they may know eternal rest with their father in heaven we pray to the lord for the special intention for this mass for the parishioners of saint mary's we pray to the lord lord hear our birth lord god defender of the tempted help your people turn again to you and serve you with all their hearts with confidence in your power over evil we have asked for your help may we know your mercy and love in our lives we ask this prayer through christ our lord [Music] where can i go but to the cross to the cross [Music] for their my shame you have washed the way [Music] where can i go but to the cross to the cross [Music] for the you gave up your life for me you gave your life for me [Music] you stretch your arms now i i lift my hand up high to my savior [Music] to my savior [Music] to my savior [Music] you stretch your arms out why i lift my hands up high to my savior [Music] pray brothers since my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father give us the right dispositions oh lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord the lord with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lantern observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating virtually the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with a company of angels and saints we sing the king of your praise as without end we acclaim [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the jew fall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread giving thanks broke it gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was sent he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith we proclaim your death the lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as you celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope marcel our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that we the blessed virgin mary mother of god we are blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we are married to be co-heirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you to your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever amen [Music] at a savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Laughter] deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope in the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but in the fate of your church and grace to grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always let us offer each other the sign of peace [Music] on your stay on your day [Music] [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb but only say the word spiritual communion my jesus i believe that you are present in the most holy sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally commonly spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you're ready there and unite myself holy to you never permit me to be separated from you amen okay so we're given permission by the archdiocese to give communion by the tongue but i just asked for those who would like to receive communion by the tongue to come towards the end okay so we'll give by the hand first and then for those who would receive by the tongue uh just come towards the end and go to the altar rail there and then i will give the communion to you okay is that clear so we don't have yet instructions if we need to change you know going to the middle so we'll just do on both sides again until further instruction [Music] savior i come [Music] quiet my soul [Music] remember [Music] redemptions here with your bloodline spirits [Music] i count it all as lost lead me to the cross lay your love poured out bring me to my knees lord i lay me down read me of myself i belong to you lead me [Music] lead me to the cross [Music] you were as i tempted and tried [Music] i count it all [Music] bring me to my knees lord i lay me down beat me of myself i belong to you oh lead me [Laughter] [Music] lead [Music] bring me to my knees i belong to you oh lead me lead me to the cross to your heart to your heart lead me to your heart lead me to your heart lead me to the cross where your love fall down bring me to my knees lord i lay me down read me myself i belong to you oh lead me [Music] bring me to my i knees me down rid me of myself i belong to you oh lead me lead me to the cross so [Music] hmm [Music] holy spirit to you holy spirit i surrender to you take my life i lay it down all my gifts and all my crowns i'm yours [Music] i am in love with undivided i am in love with you i am in love with undivided forget i am in love with you take my life i lay down all my gifts in all my crowds i am yours [Music] so let us pray renewed now with heavenly bread by which faith is nourished hope increased and charity strengthened we pray o lord that we may learn to hunger for christ the true and living bread and strive to live by every word which proceeds from your mouth through christ our lord so what's the five things that you could do to really show that you're surrendering to the lord prayer fasting don't dialogue don't dialogue with temptation the word of god close to your lips and then the last one trust in the lord okay try to remember this to show that you're really surrendering and you will see how the lord will really give you power to overcome sin amen okay so uh i would just like to give glory to the lord um so i just share a testimony remember two weeks ago i said i think i sensed the lord wants to heal somebody who has problem with the heart remember that okay when i was getting that sensing i was tempted to play it safe i was tempted to say i think the lord wants to heal the brokenhearted because i'm sure a lot of people are broken-hearted right no but the lord wants to heal a heart so i said that and after that i said give me feedback so that i would know right i'm still learning to get the sense from the lord and after a few days no email or no feedback but after four days i got an email from a parishioner who's here right now and she wrote after uh so pay attention to the timing after our family returned home from the 11 o'clock mass i received a call telling me that my mother was in hospital after having suffered a heart attack my sister a nurse had taken her to the hospital at 11 am okay a little later the priest who brings my mom holy communion on sundays found out that she was in the hospital he went straight there and gave her the sacrament of the anointing of the sick and communion this would have been between 12 and 12 30. okay i was saying this i think around 12 15. mom had tears of joy according to my sister for this wonderful gift not long after they began some treatment and mom was feeling much better by around 2 pm yesterday mom had surgery to repair the blockages they found and was sufficiently well to return home my sister who is not a believer was amazed when i told her about the priest praying prayer for healing especially given the timing of events she knows that the lord has been taking care of our mother praise be to god amen so the lord continues to heal even today so the mother is in kingston okay so even if the person is not here or not watching online you have relatives or friends who is sick the lord could heal those person okay so let's believe that the lord continues to heal today so whenever you see somebody who's sick heal them not just pray over them heal them that's the command of the lord amen the lord be with you may mighty god bless you the father and the son and the holy spirit go in peace thanks be to god saint michael the archangel defend us in battle be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil may god rebuke him we humbly pray and that our prince of the heavenly host by the power of god cast and tell satan and all the evil spirits who prowl to the world seeking the ruin of souls amen [Music] [Music] on which the priest of glory died my [Music] and poor content on all my pride see from his hands his [Music] [Laughter] [Music] me [Music] cross [Music] and find that i may truly [Music] cross all who gather here my grace john here and bless your names [Music] [Applause] you
