[Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] there is [Music] oh [Music] [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit brethren let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess is may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting god [Music] [Music] [Music] let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of holy land that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever [Music] a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying the priests shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering aramian who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong and numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand and outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders and bringing us into this country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord [Applause] [Music] my [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and so is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord as lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord [Music] you see is [Music] oh [Music] me [Music] tv [Music] [Music] is [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] m [Music] foreign [Music] a reading from the holy gospel according to [Music] so filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for forty days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command this stone to become bread jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him off and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve then he led them to jerusalem made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against a stone jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord [Music] a few announcements the annual lenten retreats for men and women are offered this year you can pick up a registration form in the back of church or visit the website the women's retreat is saturday march 26th and the men's is saturday april 2nd you can still make your gift for the annual catholic appeal envelopes at the back of the church or a pledge can be made online please credit your gifts to st john kansas and today's second collection is for the cantian fund for church restoration masses offered for deceased patricia flood in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit i am a sinner but jesus isn't but i like to make believe that i'm not a sinner and the funny thing is jesus likes to present himself as a sinner this sunday is really all about baptism may not be at first apparent but if you notice the stational church saint john lateran that is the church which we will again enter on the easter vigil and we know all of lent is actually a time of preparation specifically for the catechumens so we're praying for those 32 catechumens who right now are entering their final time awaiting the easter vigil and we also prepare to renew our baptismal commitment on easter and baptism is also the context behind today's gospel jesus returned from the jordan so the part immediately before the temptations was his being baptized by john and remember the baptism of john was a baptism for sinners so how strange that the only one who is not a sinner should willingly place himself among those who are sinners even john the baptist takes a front edit you remember he said this is not right this is not proper it reminds me too of saint peter you know many times he struggled with the lord about the message that the lord would be crucified sometimes he would take offense at that it is so hard for our minds to comprehend the fact that god became man to save sinners and yet he did so he is baptized in the jordan meaning he's identified himself with the sins of his people and what happens next follows naturally like the scapegoat of old we read in the book of leviticus a scapegoat once a year carried the sins of the people and was driven into the desert there to face the devil azazel so our lord who has taken upon the sins of his people symbolically through being baptized in a baptism of sinners is now led by the spirit into the desert where he also faces the devil i am a sinner but i like to pretend that i'm not jesus is sinless but prefers to be recognized among sinners this is a great mystery he prefers that in order to be close to us and he takes on our wounds he takes on our sins in those three temptations the three prime ways that we are tempted with the lust of the flesh turn these stones into bread satisfy your natural desires this is the temptation of worshiping of idolizing bodily pleasures of bodily comfort then there is the temptation of the lust of the eyes the glory and splendor of the kingdoms of the world of power of fame it's a temptation of worshiping and idolizing power and finally the temptation on the top of the temple the pride of life that i would make myself god seeking human respect you know what that temptation really is about do something marvelous so that people will acclaim you as the holy one the one who works wondrous miracles our lord rather prefers to be numbered among sinners [Applause] the mysteries of jesus in a certain sense belong more to you and i than they do to him because he lived them for us as we pray in the creed for us men for our salvation he came down from heaven and he chose to become one with us that's the mystery of our baptism that we were buried with him we died with him in order to be raised with him everything is connected to him all of those mysteries were not lived for himself they were lived for us they belong more to me than they do to him and that is absolutely true of the mystery of his temptations he suffered temptation in us in our human nature in order to gain the victory for us of course sharing in this mystery requires a real participation on our part which is why the church asks us to take up those three great lenten practices we practice fasting to overcome the temptation of worshiping bodily pleasures we practice almsgiving in order to overcome the temptation of clinging to worldly power worldly fame in order to cast aside those sins of vanity of human respect and finally we take up the practice of prayer because that is where we acknowledge that god is god and if there is anything good anything holy in me it is not from myself it is from him victory over sin is only possible in and through jesus christ because i'm only a branch you are all branches but he is the vine so stay close to christ for he draws close to you he would prefer to be identified with you with all of your sins in order to be close than to stay far away and to talk about his innocence he prefers to enter into the mess of our lives in order to be close to us in order to give us victory as we heard from the letter of saint paul to the romans everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved by my fasting i'm calling on the name of the lord to save me from idolatry to the desires of my flesh by my almsgiving i'm calling on the name of the lord to save me from idolatry to all the treasures and splendor that the world glitters before my eyes and especially i call upon the name of the lord through persistent and humble prayer and i am confident that he will hear my cry that i will be saved in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light and light true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death who was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world filled with confidence in god's mercy we now turn to our heavenly father with our petitions for our holy father pope francis archbishop cardinal stupid father joshua our pastor and all leaders of the church that they may be inspired and strengthened by the holy spirit let us pray to the lord for all those in public office that they may uphold religious freedom and act with love for the truth especially regarding the sanctity of human life let us pray to the lord for our catechumens and candidates as they begin their final preparations before easter that they be supported by our prayers and may they continue to trust in the call of christ let us pray to the lord for an increase in vocations of the priesthood and consecrated life especially to the canons regular of saint john kansas we pray to the lord [Music] for those who are sick in body or in spirit and for the repose of the souls of all the faithful departed let us pray to the lord almighty and ever-living god look kindly upon these our petitions and grant that in all our thoughts words and actions we may humbly submit ourselves to your holy will which is love and mercy itself through christ our lord [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] me [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] is [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] great brethren that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father us the righteous positions o lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord [Music] the [Music] off lord arms let us give thanks to the lord [Music] it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining forty long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our land in observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast so that celebrating worthily the past will mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal power school feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without and we are [Music] fools [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] me [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] [Music] your misery of faith [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and blaze our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father [Music] thy kingdom comes life will be on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation [Music] deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ [Music] lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever [Music] the peace of the lord be with you always r [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] is [Music] is [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the
