the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all dear brothers and sisters on this most sacred night in which our lord jesus christ passed from passed over from death to life the church calls upon her sons and daughters scattered throughout the world to come together to watch and pray if we keep the memorial of the lord's paschal solemnity in this way listening to his word and celebrating his mysteries then we shall have the sure hope of sharing his triumph over death and living with him in god let us pray oh god who through your son bestowed upon the faithful the fire of your glory sanctify this fire we pray and grant that these paschal celebrations that by these paschal celebrations we may be so inflamed with heavenly desires that with minds made pure we may attain festivities of unending splendor through christ our lord christ yesterday and today the beginning and the end the alpha and the omega all time belongs to him and all these to him be glory and power through every age and forever amen and by his glory by his holy and glorious wounds may christ our lord guard us and protect us amen may the light of christ rising in glory dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds the light of christ thanks be to god the light of christ thanks be to god the light of christ thanks be to god exalt let them exalt the holes of heaven exalt let angel ministers of god exalt let the trumpet of salvation sound aloud our mighty kings triumph be glad let earth be glad as glory flutter with light from her eternal king let all corners of the earth be glad knowing an rejoice let mother church also rejoice arrayed with the lightning of his glory [Music] let this holy building shake with joy filled with the mighty voices of the people therefore dearest friends standing in the awesome glory of this holy light invoke with me i ask you the mercy of god almighty that he who has been pleased to number me the one worthy among the levites may pour into me his light unshadowed that i may sing this candles perfect praises the lord be with you and with [Music] let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just with ardent love of mind and heart and with devoted service of our voice to acclaim our god invisible the almighty father and jesus christ our lord his son he's only begotten who for our sake paid adam's death to the eternal father and pouring out his own dear blood wipe clean the record of our ancient sinfulness these then are the feasts of passover in which he slain the lamb the one true lamb whose blood anoints the doorposts of believers this is the night when once you let our forebears israel's children from slavery in egypt and made them pass dry shot through the red sea this is a night that with a pillar of fire banish the darkness of sin this is the night that even now throughout the world sets christian believers apart from worldly vices and from the gloom of sin leading them to grace and joining them to his holy ones this is the night when christ broke the prison bars of death and rose victorious from the underworld our birth would have been no gain had we not been redeemed oh wonder of your humble care for us o love o charity beyond all telling to ransom a slave you gave away your son o truly necessary sin of adam destroyed completely by the death of christ oh happy fault that earned so great so glorious a redeemer oh truly blessed night worthy alone to know the time an hour when christ rose from the underworld this is the night of which it is written the night shall be as bright as day dazzling is the night for me and full of gladness the sanctifying power of this night dispels wickedness washes faults away restores innocence to the fallen and your joy to mourners drives out hatred foster's concorde and brings down the mighty [Music] on this your night of grace oh holy father accept this candle a solemn offering the work of bees and of your servant's hands an evening sacrifice of praise this gift from your most holy church but now we know the praises of this pillar which glowing fire ignites for god's honor [Music] a fire into many flames divided yet never dimmed by sharing of its light for it is fed by melting wax drawn out by mother bees to build a torch so precious oh truly blessed night when things of heaven are wed to those of earth and divine to the human therefore o lord we pray you that this candle hallowed to the honor of your name persevere under to overcome the darkness of this night receive it as a pleasing sac pleasing fragrance and let it mingle with the lights of heaven may this flame be found still burning by the morning star the one morning star who never says christ your son who coming back from debt's domain has shed his peaceful light on humanity and lives and reigns forever [Music] dear brothers and sisters now that we have begun our solemn vigil let us listen with quiet hearts to the word of god let us meditate on how god in times past saved his people and in these last days has sent us his son as our redeemer let us pray that our god may complete this paschal work of salvation by the fullness of redemption please be seated a reading from the book of genesis in the beginning when god created the heavens and the earth the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep while the spirit of god swept over the face of the waters then god said let there be light and there was light and god saw that the light was good and god separated the light from the darkness god called the light day and the darkness he called light night and there was evening and there was morning the first day and god said let there be a dome in the midst of the waters and let it separate the waters from the waters so god made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome and it was so god called the dome sky and there was evening and there was morning the second day and god said let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place and let the dry land appear and it was so god called the dry land earth and the waters that were gathered together he called seas and god saw that it was good then god said let the earth put forth vegetation plants yielding seed and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it and it was so the earth brought forth vegetation plants yielding seed of every kind and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it and god saw that it was good and there was evening and there was morning the third day and god said let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth and it was so god made the two great lights the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night and the stars god set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth to rule over the day and over the night and to separate the light from the darkness and god saw that it was good and there was evening and there was morning the fourth day and god said let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures and led birds fly up above the earth across the tone the dome of the sky so god created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves of every kind with which the waters swarm and every winged bird of every kind and god saw that it was good god blessed them saying be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas and let the birds multiply on the earth and there was morning there was evening and there was morning the fifth day and god said let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind and it was so god made the wild animals of the earth of every kind and the cattle of every kind and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind and god saw that it was good then god said let us make man in our image according to our likeness and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over the cattle and over all the wild animals of the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth so god created man in his in his image in the image of god he created him male and female he created them god blessed them and god said to them be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth god said see i have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth and every tree with seed in its fruit you shall have them for food and to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the air and to everything that creeps on the earth everything that has breath of life i have given every green plant for food and it was so god saw everything that he had made and indeed it was very good and there was morning and evening the sixth day thus the heavens and the earth were finished and all their multitude and on the seventh day god finished the work that he had done and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done the word of the lord [Music] lord send forth your spirit and renew the face of the earth lord [Music] send forth your spirit and renew the face [Music] bless the lord o my soul o lord my god you are very great you are clothed with honor and majesty wrapped in light as with the garments send forth your spirit and renew the face of the earth you set the earth on its foundations so that it shall never be shaken you cover it with it deep as with a garment the water stood above the mountains send forth your spirit and renew the face of the earth you make springs gush forth in the valleys they flow between the hills by the streams the birds of the air have their habitation [Music] they sing among the branches lord send forth your spirit and renew the face of the earth from your lofty abode you water the mountains the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work you cause the grass to grow for the cattle and plants for people to use to bring forth food from the earth lord send forth your spirit and renew the face of the earth [Music] oh lord how manifold are your works in wisdom you have made them all the earth is full of your creatures the lord o my soul [Music] lord send forth your spirit and renew the face of the earth send forth your spirit and renew the face of the earth [Music] let us pray almighty ever living god who are wonderful in the ordering of all your works may those you have redeemed understand that there exists nothing more marvelous than the world's creation in the beginning except that at the end of the ages christ our passover has been sacrificed who lives and reigns forever and ever amen a reading from the book of exodus the lord said to moses why do you cry out to me tell the children of israel to go forward but you lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it that the children of israel may go into the sea on dry ground then i will harden the hearts of the egyptians so that they will go in after them and so i will gain glory for myself over pharaoh and all his army his chariots and his chariot drivers and the egyptians shall know that i am the lord when i have gained glory for myself over pharaoh his chariots and his chariot drivers the angel of god who was going before the israelite army moved and went behind them and the pillar of cloud from in front of them and took its place behind them it came between the army of egypt and the army of israel and so the cloud was there with the darkness and it lit up the night one did not come near the other all night then moses stretched out his hand over the sea the lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and turned the sea into dry land and the waters were divided the children of israel went into the sea on dry ground the waters forming a wall for them on the right and on their left the egyptians pursued and went into the sea after them all of pharaoh's horses chariots and chariot drivers at the morning watch the lord in the pillar of fire and cloud looked down upon the egyptian army and threw the egyptian army into panic he clogged their chariot wheels so that they turned with difficulty the egyptians said let us flee from the children of israel for the lord is fighting for them against egypt then the lord said to moses stretch out your hand over the sea so that the water may come back upon the egyptians upon their chariots and chariot drivers so moses stretched out his hand over the sea and at dawn the sea returned to its normal depth as the egyptians fled before it the lord tossed the egyptians into the sea the waters returned and covered the chariots and the chariot drivers the entire army of pharaoh that had followed them into the sea not one of them remained but the children of israel walked on dry ground through the sea the waters forming a wall for them on the right and on their left thus the lord saved israel that day from the egyptians and israel saw the egyptians dead on the seashore israel saw the great work that the lord did against the egyptians so the people feared the lord and believed in the lord and in his servant moses the prophet miriam aaron's sister took a tambourine in her hand and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dancing moses and the children of israel sang this song to the lord let us sing to the lord he has covered himself in glory let us sing to the lord he has covered himself in glory i will sing to the lord for he has triumphed gloriously horse and rider he is thrown into the sea the lord is my strength and my mind and has become my salvation this is my god and i will praise him my father's god and i will ignore this let us he has covered himself in glory let us sing to the lord he has covered himself in glory [Music] the lord is a warrior the lord is his name pharaoh's chariots and his army he cast into the sea these picked officers were sunk in the red sea the floods covered them they went down into the depths like a storm let [Music] in us let us sing to the lord he is your right hand oh lord glorious in power your right hand o lord shattered the enemy in the greatness of your deceit you overthrew your adversary you sent out your fury [Music] is glory let us sing to the lord he has covered himself in glory you brought your people in and planted them on the mountain of your own possession the place o lord that you made your abode the sanctuary o lord that your hands have established the lord will reign forever let us sing to the lord he is covered in himself in glory let us sing [Music] is let us pray o god who by the light of the new testament have unlocked the meaning of wonders worked in former times so that the red sea prefigured the sacred font and the nation delivered from slave slavery foreshadows the christian people grant we pray that all nations obtaining the privilege of israel by merit of faith may be reborn by partaking of your spirit through christ our lord a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah thus says to lord everyone who thirsts come to the waters and you that have no money come buy and eat come buy wine and milk without money and without price why do you spend your money for that which is not bread and your labor for that which does not satisfy listen carefully to me and eat what is good and delight yourselves in rich food incline your ear and come to me listen so that you may live i will make with you an everlasting covenant my steadfast sure love for david see i made him a witness to the peoples a leader and commander for the peoples see you shall call nations that you do not know and nations that do not know you shall run to you because of the lord your god the holy one of israel for he has glorified you seek the lord while he may be found call upon him while he is near let the wicked person forsake their way and the unrighteous person their thoughts let that person return to the lord that he may have mercy on them and to our god for he will abundantly pardon for my thoughts are not your thoughts nor are you always my ways says the lord for as the heavens are higher than the earth so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts for as the raid and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there until they have watered the earth making it bring forth and sprout giving seed to the sower and bread to the one who eats so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth it shall not return to me empty but it shall accomplish that which i purpose and succeed in the thing for which i sent it the word of the lord [Music] with joy you weld your water [Music] of salvation with joy you will draw water from [Music] surely god is my salvation i will trust and will not be afraid for the lord god is my strength and my mind he has become my salvation joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation the wells of salvation give thanks to the lord call on his name making own his deeds among the nations proclaim that his name is exalted with joy we'll draw water from the wells of salvation sing praises to the lord for he has done gloriously let this be known in all the earth shout out and sing for joy o royal zion for great in your midst is the holy one of [Music] you israel draw water from the wells of salvation with joy you'll [Music] of salvation let us pray almighty ever living god soul hope of the world who by the preaching of your prophets unveil the mysteries of this present age graciously increase the longing of your people for only at the prompting of your grace do the faithful progress in any kind of virtue through christ our lord [Music] glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory [Music] lord god heavenly king o god almighty father glory to god in the highest and on earth peace you people of good will lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive a prayer you are seated at the right hand of the lord of lords let us pray oh god who make this most sacred night radiant with the glory of the lord's resurrection stir up in your church a spirit of adoption so that renewed in body and mind we may render you undivided service through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into christ jesus were baptized into his death therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death so that just as christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the father so we too might walk in newness of life for if we have been united with him in a death like his we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed and we might no longer be enslaved to sin for whoever has died is freed from sin but if we have died with christ we believe that we will also live with him we know that christ being raised from the dead will never die again death no longer has dominion over him the death he died he died to sin once for all but the life he lives he lives to god so you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to god in christ jesus the word of the lord [Music] hallelujah hallelujah [Music] the mighty hand of the lord has triumphed his right hand raised me up i shall not die i shall live and i shall recount his deeds hallelujah hallelujah [Music] hallelujah [Music] hallelujah [Applause] [Music] the stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone this is the work of the lord a marvel in our eyes hallelujah [Music] hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark when the sabbath was over mary magdalene and mary the mother of james and salome brought spices so they might go and anoint jesus and very early on the first day of the week when the sun had risen they went to the tomb they had been saying to one another who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb when they looked up they saw that the stone which was very large had already been rolled back as they entered the tomb they saw a young man drastic dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side and they were alarmed but he said to them do not be alarmed you are looking for jesus of nazareth who was crucified he has been raised he is not here look there is the place where they laid him but go tell his disciples and peter that he is going ahead of you to galilee there you will see him just as he told you so they went out and fled from the tomb for terror and amazement had seized them and they said nothing to anyone for they were afraid the gospel of the lord yeah christ is risen as he said he would so christ is risen a lot of people might say who cares which is a valid question it's okay to ask that you know people say who cares i want to give you tonight two reasons why we should care that christ is risen okay two reasons reason number one it really happened it really happened this is very important a lot of people think it's a little fairy tale we believe in or maybe something based on legends and it's the type of thing well people say oh i have a child like faith so i believe now that's great i have a child like faith too i believe i hope i have a child like faith i don't want to assume that but it's good to have a child like faith but listen a big part of the reason i believe in the resurrection is because i'm a thinking person and i looked at the evidence that's what we proclaim as christians an intellectually honest person who does the research looks into it will recognize that the life death and resurrection it's based on some real good history rock solid if you believe in any figures of antiquity place based on the limited historical evidence for them you better believe in the lord jesus in his life in his actions in resurrection did you know that did you know that that our catholic faith our faith in jesus christ is founded on good historical rock solid evidence it's important for us to know this and to proclaim this it really happened now there are numerous sources for the events of the life of our lord jesus christ christian sources but also jewish sources and even pagan sources the historical evidence is ample and what's more important is that so much of the documentation for the life of christ his life his miracles his death his resurrection so much of that documentation was written within the lifetime of the witnesses of the events i'm getting technical on you tonight but it's important i'll give you an example years ago i was here at st mary's father francis frankovich was the pastor he did the easter vigil he was kind of a innovator in liturgy so he decided to have the the easter liturgy fire in the church he built a fire in the church this fire the flames it's hard to remember was that were they six feet high eight feet high 10 feet high it's kind of part of the saint mary's lore the legends here what happened in this place now some people will say ha you expect me to believe how do you expect me to believe that i don't believe well my response would be i was there i was there and as a matter of fact michelle were you there you were the warren was there yeah some of you are saying yeah i was there did i miss him oh the deacon he was there how do we know what happened because now this was this was about 25 years ago how do we know what happened because some of us were there we're still alive there were people who were there that night who since then have passed on it's true but there are still people alive who were there now why is this important you remember saint paul saint paul he persecuted the christians to death when he started to enter the christian community and proclaim christ the christians they were a little careful with him he wasn't one of the twelve so everything saint paul would have said would have been scrutinized they loved saint paul they were impressed by him but it was important that saint paul more than anyone else get the story right that he had his facts straight this is what saint paul wrote 20 years after the event the dating of the new testament writings is a very accurate science fascinating thing won't get into it here 20 years after the it's not too long after this is what saint paul wrote in first corinthians chapter 15. for i handed on to you as of first importance what i also received that christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures that he was buried that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures that he appeared to kephas then to the 12th after that he appeared to more than 500 brothers at once most of whom are still living though some have fallen asleep after that he appeared to james then to all the apostles last of all as to one born abnormally he appeared to me this is one witness of many in writing we know that this writing shortly after the events there were many other witnesses who said the same thing he died he was buried but then he was raised and the disciples saw him and other people saw him and this event it kind of changed things in the world didn't it started a new movement christianity spread around the world very interesting the people who accepted christianity they had nothing to gain in this world many of them lost all they had some of them lost their own lives and it's interesting under times of persecution this phenomena called christianity believing in the risen lord jesus who gives us eternal life in times of persecution it's when it spread most i'm not making this up check your history an intellectually honest person has to recognize that the lord jesus christ changed the world and those who followed him believed and knew that he was risen from the dead and he's alive pouring out his spirit upon those who accept him and believe in him giving them new life and we believe and we know eternal life what we believe brothers and sisters it's not just it's not at all fairy tales and yes it does require child like faith but it also calls us to do your homework study the sources study why it is that we believe in the lord jesus christ again an intellect an intellectually honest thinking person has to take the lord jesus seriously and his resurrection seriously so that's the first reason why we should care that the lord jesus is risen from the dead the second reason is because this man who split time in two his coming into the world split time in two what year were you born that year is relative it's it's measured based on when jesus came into the world no one has had such an impact on the world and humanity as him an impact for the good he taught us to love one another he taught us to turn the other cheek he taught us to forgive our enemies he taught us to forgive he taught us to lay down our lives brothers he taught us to sacrifice for others he changed the world like no other this man reason number two this man made claims on your life he didn't just teach us nice moral teachings or give us nice wisdom he talked about you he made claims on your life many of them let me give you one or two examples i could give you a lot the lord jesus risen from the dead most impressive person who's ever walked the face of the earth this is what he said go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature whoever believes and is baptized will be saved whoever does not believe will be condemned this man who rose from the dead and changed the world says if you believe in him if you're baptized you'll be saved you'll live forever if you don't believe if you reject my love and my mercy if you reject the good news if you reject the forgiveness the healing you'll be condemned in john chapter 14 jesus says i am the way and the truth and the life no one comes to the father except through me this is a universal statement that applies to you do you want to be with the father who made you for all of eternity in heaven do you want to be with him you want to go to him well it's through jesus the lord jesus sent by the father god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son so that whoever believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life that's why we should care that the lord jesus indeed he rose from the dead he conquered death he put to death death he rose giving us eternal life now [Applause] there's an example of two people one who accepted this great love and mercy the sacrifice and one who didn't it's at the cross and i just learned about this this is this is a beautiful little thing i don't know how many of you are familiar with the russian orthodox cross i know you are you've seen them before the russian orthodox cross so it's like a typical cross so you got your your your vertical beam and then you got the top horizontal little one that's where it was written um jesus of nazareth the king of the jews jesus king of the jews and then the the main large horizontal beam that's the beam where jesus was his hands were nailed to the cross and then there's a lower beam and that that was a kind of a foot rest but it was actually meant to prolong the torture and on the russian orthodox cross that bottom beam is tilted have you seen that one before the bottom beam is tilted it's on an angle and it represents something you see when jesus was dying on the cross there were two thieves one on his right one on his left and the one on his right we know him as saint dismiss we call him the good thief that might not be completely accurate because if he was a good thief he would have never got caught but we still call him the good thief and he's the one who recognized that jesus he is indeed a savior and and dismissed he repented right there and he asked the lord jesus for mercy and he received that mercy and jesus said to him this day you will be with me in paradise so the tradition tells us that dismiss was on jesus's right and so it's on the right if we were looking at it beyond the left because that's jesus is right but the point is that side it's pointing up it's pointing up the other side is pointing down that's where guestas the other thief was he's the one who reviled jesus and didn't accept his love didn't accept the mercy of jesus didn't believe in him it's pointing down he didn't seem to get to heaven he seemed to go to the other place and they say that this this icon you have our lord of jesus the savior the lamb of god who offered himself in sacrifice pouring out his life on the cross his blood being poured out his heart pierced paying the price for our sins he's on the cross and again this is an icon and on on one side is someone who sees and loves and receives mercy and recognizes and who who's given eternal life and on the other side is someone who doesn't care doesn't care won't receive the lord's mercy won't accept god's mercy and that person misses loses eternal life in this time of darkness people are saying if for the world it's a time of eclipse we're losing our faith christianity is in many places it's in a nosedive it's a it's a dark time it's really important for us first of all to know and to believe that jesus christ was sent by god he's the one and only savior of the world those who believe in him will live forever and it's also so it's important for for us to believe but it's also important for us to proclaim this to a world in darkness maybe i should have made a big bonfire like father francis as a symbol of what we need right now we need the fire to spread you know how we took our candles we spread them around we really need to proclaim to people and maybe we will enter into a time of more persecution we're seeing a little bit of that here and there but maybe we'll see more persecution and we'll still have to proclaim to people listen we know that the ways of the world are opposing what we proclaim but you need to know that jesus christ came to save you you need to believe in him and accept him if you want to live forever and so brothers and sisters let tonight be a challenge to you again first of all to know and to to accept once again yes jesus you saved me please have mercy on me and then to say you know what lord here i am send me i want to bring your fire to the whole world uh dear brothers and sisters let us humbly beseech the lord our god to bless this water he has created which will be sprinkled upon us as a memorial of our baptism may he graciously renew us that we may remain faithful to the spirit whom we have received lord our god in your mercy be present to your people who keep vigil on this most sacred night and for us who recall the wondrous work of our creation and the still greater work of our redemption graciously bless this water for you created water to make the fields fruitful and to refresh and cleanse our bodies you also made water the instrument of your mercy for through the water you freed your people from slavery and quench their thirst in the desert through water the prophets proclaimed the new covenant you were to enter upon with the human race and last of all through water which christ made holy in the jordan you have re renewed and our corrupted nature in the path of regeneration therefore may this water be for us a memorial of the baptism we have received and grant that we may share in the gladness of our brothers and sisters who at easter have conceived their bapti who have received their baptism through christ our lord amen okay we're now going to light our candles again and i'm going to have you renew your baptismal promises so do you want a light and it will let everyone's candle oh father roger we're sharing the fire there's letting our light shine and we're sharing the light dear brothers and sisters through the paschal mystery we have been buried with christ in baptism so that we may walk with him in newness of life and so now that our lenten observance is concluded let
