the priest the priests the ministers where is their lord god turned concerned so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] do [Music] so [Music] [Music] do [Music] [Music] do [Music] uh welcome all please stand [Music] show us the way to come home [Laughter] we have been wandering far from your love [Music] to dwell forever in your house but i may gaze on your [Music] loveliness of my life [Music] save your people [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion the holy spirit be with you all let us pray grant o lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take up battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever [Music] a reading from the book of the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with your whole heart with fasting and weeping and mourning rend your hearts not your garments and return to the lord your god for gracious and merciful is he slow to anger and rich in kindness and relenting in punishment perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing offerings and libations for the lord your god blow the trumpet zion proclaim a fast call an assembly gather the people notify the congregation assemble the elders gather the children and the infants at the breast let the bridegroom quit his room and the bride her chamber between the porch and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep and say spare o lord your people and make not your heritage a reproach with the nations ruling over them why should they say among the peoples where is their god then the lord was stirred to concern for his land and took pity on his people the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] be merciful [Music] lord for we have sinned [Music] merciful lord for we have sinned have mercy on me god in your kindness in your compassion o wash me more and more from my guilt and my sorrow and cleanse me from all of my sins [Music] lord for we have sinned my offenses truly i know them and my sins are always before me against you alone have i sinned o lord what is evil in your sight i have done [Music] lord for we have sinned be merciful lord for created me a clean heart oh god put your steadfast spirit in my soul cast me not away from your presence o lord and take not your spirit from me [Music] lord for we have sinned a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ as if god were appealing through us we implore you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin so that we might become the righteousness of god in him working together then we appeal to you not to receive the grace of god in vain for he says in an acceptable time i heard you and on the day of salvation i helped you behold now is a very acceptable time behold now is the day of salvation the word of the lord thanks be to god glory and praise glory and praise to you lord jesus christ glory and praise to you lord jesus christ if today you hear his and voice glory and praise to you lord jesus christ [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to saint matthew jesus said to his disciples take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you will have no recompense from your heavenly father when you give alms do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received the reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that your arms giving may be secret and your father who sees in secret will repeat repay you when you pray do not be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the streets corners so that others may see them amen i say to you they have received the reward but when you pray go to your inner room close the door and pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so that they may appear to others to be fasting amen i say to you they have received the reward but when you fast anoint your head and watch your face so that you may not appear to be fasting except to your father who is hidden and your father who sees what is hidden will repay you the gospel of the lord the first reading from the book of joel uh uses a drastic expression that shock us it says rent your hearts not your garments however eternal heart is a heart closer to encountering the lord for more than one reason first eternal heart is open is an open heart we close our hearts when we don't want to listen we close them when we don't want to feel we close them when we prefer not to feel sorry for anyone but our souls we seal them on fire when we pretend that we can solve everything and that there is no need for a god in our lives a close heart is the grave opening the heart is letting it breathe letting it listen letting it feel because we surrender to the immeasurable providence of god but to open a heart that feels comfortable in his own prison it must be torn apart says the prophet a true heart is a mourning heart sin attracted us with the seduction of joy and the candy of pleasure sin used the beauty and the laughter that accompaniment to wrap us in its lying charm leaving the sweetness the sweetness hearts and abandoning those scarces isn't easy but it is in the pain that begins the path of genuine conversion and that is why we must consider as a blessing such first suffering that finally free free us from deception it transforms sin from being in a stumbling block to a step in a stone towards our salvation the idea proclaimed by joel sums up a request for sorrow for our sins coming from the heart and not just an external appearance and it's from there that the strong boys of jesus in today's gospel awaken us and call us everyone to a religion to a faith lived sincerely sincerely jesus words refer to three great jewish piratey practices which are also valid for us as the lord taught with his example his words are about prayer fasting and almsgiving sincerity has a very concrete face in the preaching of jesus and this word summarizes avoiding doing things so others can see us it's not the people's approval that will make us approve by god is not the applause of people that will show the benevolence of god we need silence and solitude to achieve sincerity only when our actions are motivated by the desire to please the god who sees in secret will we achieve a religion a faith that is authentic and transparent such acting to follow the rules all the time just acting to follow the rules all the time or occasionally doesn't show the sincerity of the open heart no matter how much we tell ourselves otherwise god sees in secret he is not a spy nor is he a meddler or something as some atheistic essentialist slander he's not an idler or gossiper when simply the universe belongs to him we merely are his work it's not god's choice to know us to the core of our being it is the natural consequence of the basic fact that he made or be possible we are his creatures the divine gaze is the space of truth in which we recognize the first and radical affirmation of what we are creatures only before the truth and extreme belonging to him we do reach the truth first in our conscience says and then before our brothers and sisters so with the understanding of the lord's request to be sincere and that we cannot deceive him even if we deceive ourselves let's reflect in a few moments we will be marked in the four on the forehead with ashes of the pounds on the on the palms of the last year on sunday and we will be hearing the words remember that your thoughts and your those will be returned or repent and believe in the gospel and through those the church assure us of our mortality our body's fragility becoming dust at some point in time and the briefness and unpredictability of our elderly lives she in the church seriously warns us that we will suffer eternally if we do not repent of our sins and reconcile with god by asking forgiveness and third simultaneously she invited us to recognize our sinful condition and to return to our merciful god with sincere repentance to renew our lives so she call us to purify and renew our lives during this lenten season through repentance expressing sorrow for our sins by turning away from any occasion of sin and turning to god always how do we express it reconciling ourselves with god daily asking for forgiveness from those who we have offended and given unconditional forgive forgiveness to those who have offended us the church called us to fast pray and do acts of penance following the example of jesus before beginning his public ministry fasting reduces our spiritual energy disordered tendencies unhealthy habits addictions and limited bondages and fasting also give us moral and spiritual strength that encourage us to share our blessings food and goods with those in need fasting allows us to set more intimate time with god in prayer and make our minds clearer and more receptive of the sacred food that the word of god in the scripture and the holy eucharist dear brothers and sisters let us humbly ask god our father that he be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace these ashes which we will put on our heads and penitents o god who desire not the death of sinners but their conversion mercifully hear our prayers and in your kindness be pleased to bless these ashes which we intend to receive upon our heads that we who acknowledge we are but ashes and shall return to dust may through a steadfast observance of lent gain pardon for sins and newness of life after the likeness of your risen son who lives and reigns forever and ever [Applause] repent and believe in the gospel repent and believe in the gospel so [Music] so [Music] there we go okay just we come forward as we do for communion so one line is center so this side first then this side will come down the center and then the far sides will go to uh the far sides just like we do for communion sorry about that [Music] so [Music] with these ashes we know your love o lord with these ashes we turn our hearts to you daughters and sons we journey as one with these ashes [Music] joining together on this journey with you we walk these 40 service we will answer your call with voices raised we share your word called by your grace lord let our cry be heard with his love o ashes with these ashes we turn our hearts to you daughters and
