the lord became my protector he brought me out to a place of freedom he saved me because he delighted in me in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries you were sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy you are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life let us pray grant us o lord we pray that the course of our world may be directed by your peaceful rule and that your church may rejoice untroubled in her devotion through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the first letter of saint paul blessed be the god and father of our lord jesus christ who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of jesus christ from the dead to an inheritance that is imperishable undefiled and unfading kept in heaven for you who by the power of god are safeguarded through faith to a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the final time in this you rejoice although now for a little while you may have to suffer through various trials so that the genuineness of your faith more precious than gold that is perishable even though tested by fire may prove to be for praise glory and honor at the revelation of jesus christ although you have not seen him you love him even though you do not see him now yet you believe in him you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy as you attain the goal of faith the salvation of your souls the word of the lord the lord will remember his covenant forever the lord will remember his covenant forever i will give thanks to the lord with all my heart in the company and assembly of the just great are the works of the lord exquisite in all their delights the lord will remember his covenant forever he has given food to those who fear him he will forever be mindful of his covenant he has made known to his people the power of his works giving them the inheritance of the nations the lord will remember his covenant forever he has sent deliverance to his people he has ratified his covenant forever holy and awesome is his name his praise endures forever the lord will remember his covenant forever jesus christ became poor although he was rich so that by his poverty you might become rich hallelujah hallelujah the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark as jesus was setting out on a journey a man ran up knelt down before him and asked him good teacher what must i do to inherit eternal life jesus answered him why do you call me good no one is good but god alone you know the commandments you shall not kill you shall not commit adultery you shall not steal you shall not bear false witness you shall not defraud honor your father and your mother he replied and said to him teacher all of these i have observed from my youth jesus looking at him loved him and said to him you're lacking in one thing go sell what you have and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven then come follow me at that statement his face fell and he went away sad for he had many possessions jesus looked around and said to his disciples how hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of god the disciples were amazed at his words so jesus again said to them in reply children how hard it is to enter the kingdom of god it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of god they were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves then who can be a saved jesus looked at them and said for men it is impossible but not for god all things are possible for god the gospel of the lord on my retreat i spent a lot of time my director was sending me off to meditate upon a lot of a lot of readings that were involved st peter and we have the beginning of his first letter in today's first reading and one of the things amongst many ways the lord gifted me in that retreat was just clarity the way that the lord spoke so clearly to peter and gave peter multiple opportunities if we just look at we kind of track peter throughout the gospel so even beyond the parts that i was reading on my retreat i was just thinking about all peter the whole trajectory of peter through the gospel is a lot of moments of the lord just being very clear and peter having moments of are in those moments making having an opportunity to make a choice you know like and it comes down to what the lord says um here today to to this this man who came up to him come follow me like those words are repeated to many people throughout the gospels and and those words are given to peter in different forms uh throughout his interactions with the lord and each time peter's kind of take another step of what it means to follow the lord all the things that happen in our world are sort of you could say they're not unimportant but they're kind of accidental or incidental in a sense because the only thing that's essential is come follow me i have to deal with this yes come follow me but lord this is going on yes i know come follow me but what about these things i know come follow me so that's always the essential again the things that happen they're all many things happen they're all important they're not unimportant they're important to the lord they're important things that mean to deal with challenges things that overcome joys blessings sufferings but the the thing that always remains the same is come follow me uh the lord doesn't want us to be fixated on the things that are challenges because we tend to get fixated on right and then life becomes about that and the lord says no i want you to be clear peter um everyone else that he's talking to as a disciple it's all about come follow me what's great is command well you know all the commandments let me list all them for you yes teacher i've done all those things well then the one thing that remains is come follow me right come follow me that's the consistent thing and and i think when we when we read a writing from someone like saint peter who got to this point of just clarity and you read what he's writing and sometimes these words just kind of all kind of blend together a lot of theological words and this these verses these seven verses and it kind of just goes by and kind of flows over us and it sounds beautiful but if you really stop and look at every single sentence every single word there's just so much clarity in this it's just so much is contained i'd encourage you if you have a chance just to read slowly through this first reading again but it comes down to faith and peter is describing what faith is we've talked about faith a lot i bring it up whenever i can um how important faith is never take it for granted it's a free gift from god it's something to be treasured to be taken care of um what is faith for well there's really a lot of clarity offered in the last line the goal of faith does anybody catch what the goal of faith was salvation of your soul the goal of faith isn't like so everything works out here and everything works out there and i have this blessing and that blessing and i feel good i mean we want those things we want to feel the fruits of faith being of joy and peace and clarity but ultimately the goal of faith is this salvation of our souls that's where faith is leading somewhere it's not leading through all these challenges and things that are going hard here that can really uh like i said not just distract us but they take our heart you know they move our hearts different spots because we become really because they're important and we wonder how they're going to work out and but remember that through these things we're heading somewhere right we're heading towards salvation of our souls so the goal of faith is a condition a salvation our souls but it's a place right it's following jesus again follow me right come follow me so i really appreciate the clarity that someone like st peter who went through a lot of trials a lot of lessons and learned from the lord and had these again he we've seen him waffle back and forth make you know missteps the lord rebukes him you know all these things what a gift he offers us he went through a lot and he got these moments of collect he got to a point of clarity where he could write to us from that from from a um i guess from that that place that place of clarity and so i pray that we all can uh receive that gift from the lord through saint peter through his writings through his witness through his intercession through his experiences to help us help us have that clarity of what is faith for uh where are we headed and remember no matter what we're facing uh difficulties we all have many of them that we face in this world um it all with one thing that always remains the same and just be clear about that is come follow me the lord just says come follow me whatever we're dealing with the way through anything is to follow jesus as a community of faith firmly trusting in god we present our petitions to the father for the church throughout the world may her members continue to grow in wisdom and grace let us pray to the lord for those in authority who seek to bring peace to the world may god give them strength for their mission let us pray to the lord for those who are disillusioned or challenged by the burdens of racism hatred or disrespect may god strengthen them with his love and comfort let us pray to the lord for those of us gathered here may god hear and answer our prayers for eyes to see and ears to hear those in need let us pray to the lord for all who have died especially claude abud for whom this mass is offered may god welcome them into his presence among the saints and angels let us pray to the lord heavenly father we present our prayers to you knowing that you are always available to us your children and will grant what we need we offer these prayers through jesus christ our lord our parish mission prayer almighty father once again you are at the door and knock during our parish mission you ask us to open the door of our hearts to your abundant mercy rouse us purify and illumine our hearts enter into every home of our parish recall those far off raise the fallen of mercy we entrust to you this time of mission may produce abundant fruits in our christian life amen mary queen of peace st peter blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we receive the bread we offer you fruit of the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we receive the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it'll become our spiritual drink pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father oh god who provide gifts to be offered to your name and count our oblations as signs of our desire to serve you with devotion we ask of your mercy that what you grant as the source of merit may also help us to attain merit's reward through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord in him you have been pleased to renew all things giving us all a share in his fullness for though he was in the form of god he emptied himself and by the blood of his cross brought peace to all creation therefore he has been exalted above all things and to all who obey him has become the source of eternal salvation and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith when we eat this bread therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and paul our bishop and eusebio his auxiliary bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always let us offer each other the sign of peace lamb of god behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed behold i am with you always even to the end of the age says the lord [Music] let us pray nourished by your saving gifts
