[Music] him in [Music] [Applause] o praise the father praise the son grace [Music] r [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit on behalf of monsignor walter who has wrecked the basilica i welcome you all to our eucharistic celebration today especially those who join us live stream we come as a people who sing alleluia today the last sunday that we will do that until easter but in many parts of the world especially in the ukraine that alleluia has a deeper meaning today because after the cross and death there is new eternal life in christ uniting ourselves to all our brothers and sisters who recognize as we do our faults our sinfulness we now acknowledge them and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i've done and what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary of a virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us of our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] cheers [Music] r [Music] is [Music] chelsea's [Music] foreign [Music] me is [Music] is [Music] please [Music] is [Music] let us pray grant us oh lord we pray that the course of our world may be directed by your peaceful rule and that your church may rejoice untroubled in her devotion through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of sirach when a sieve is shaken the husks appear so do one's faults when one speaks as the test of what the pottermoles is in the furnace so in tribulation is the test of the just the fruit of a tree shows the care it has had so too does one's speech disclose the bent of one's mind praise no one before he speaks for it is then that people are tested the word of the lord [Music] lord it is good to give thanks lord it is good it is good to give thanks to the lord to sing praise to your name most [Music] mercedes [Music] lord it is good [Music] the just one shall flourish like the palm tree like a cedar of lebanon shall he grow up [Music] lord it is good [Music] they shall bear fruit even in old age vigorous and sturdy shall they be [Music] [Applause] [Music] it is good [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters when this which is corruptable clothes itself with incorruptibility and this which is mortal clothes itself with immortality then the word that is written shall come about death is swallowed up in victory where o death is your victory where o death is your sting the staying of death is sin and the power of sin is the law but thanks be to god who gives us the victory through our lord jesus christ therefore my beloved brothers and sisters be firm steadfast always fully devoted to the work of the lord knowing that in the lord your labor is not in vain the word of the lord [Music] oh [Music] shine like light in the world as you hold on to the word of love [Music] [Applause] oh [Music] oh me the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you lord jesus told his disciples a parable can a blind person guide a blind person will not both fall into a pit no disciple is superior to the teacher but when fully trained every disciple will be like his teacher why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own how can you say to your brother brother let me remove that splinter in your eye when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye you hypocrite remove the wooden beam from your eye first then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye a good tree does not bear rotten fruit nor does it a rotten tree bear a good fruit for every tree is known by its own fruit for people do not pick figs from thorn bushes nor do they gather grapes from brambles a good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ by the way this gospel wiped away our sins whoever remains in me and i in him will bear much fruit because without me you can do nothing by this is my father glorified and you shall become my disciple these words spoken by jesus to the apostles at the last supper as recorded by saint john in his gospel are the expounding of what jesus taught his disciples at the start of his public ministry as written by saint luke in his account of jesus's sermon on the plane again we hear in today's gospel jesus's words from this sermon that make demands on every follower of his to love one's neighbor even those who are faulted and are deemed to be inferior to us the core of this teaching my brothers and sisters is found in the graciousness and compassion of our loving god for all humanity the challenge for all of us is to bear witness to god's forgiveness and generosity in our daily lives the result of our listening to and acting upon the words of jesus spoken to his disciples then and to us here and now the scriptures this eighth sunday in winter ordinary time three days before the church's celebration of the great 90 days of lent and easter cause us to be deeply introspective to ask ourselves difficult questions about our witness to the selfless and total commitment to the gospel how do our internal thoughts align with our external words and deeds have we easily dismissed jesus's call to holiness as impossible disparaged his teachings as lofty ideals that no one was ever meant to achieve the 20th century british writer philosopher lay theologian author of the priest detective stories father brown g k chesterson who was influenced by the writings of saints thomas aquinas and cardinal john henry newman once remarked the christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting it has been found difficult and left untried faithfulness my brothers and sisters in our living of christian discipleship is not easy jesus said from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks a person's heart is ultimately known by their words and actions jesus's insight into how we behave versus how we ought to behave as taught in his parables and preaching was profound for the heart of jesus's ministry in word and action was to reveal to all the father's merciful love for us despite our glaring faults jesus wanted us to realize the requirements of genuine faith and show us how by his grace you and i can live them here now today it shows us how by heartfelt humility and trust in god's bountiful love that we can tolerate and even rise above the shortcomings of others only after discerning the faultiness of our own hearts by this self-examination this soul-searching the truth of jesus's teaching about our witness to the gospel is realized let us not take the gift of god's grace for granted my brothers and sisters empowered by the spirit of the risen christ let us recommit ourselves to our baptismal promises and devote our lives more faithfully to the good news of our salvation acting upon the words of saint paul proclaimed in today's second reading therefore my beloved be firm steadfast and always fully devoted to the work of the lord knowing that in the lord your labor is not in vain for god gives us the victory through our lord jesus christ i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified unto pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen amen trusting in the abundant blessings of our merciful god let us now join in offering our prayers to our loving father for our holy father pope francis and all bishops that their witness to the gospel will renew the faith of the people of god let us pray to the lord r lord lord heal that leaders of nations will seek an end to war and division and strive to rebuild justice trust and hope especially in ukraine let us pray to the lord r that all of us gather here today we'll respond faithfully to the word of god and allow that word to guide our lives and form our hearts let us pray to the lord r for those who are ill or homebound may they be uplifted and comforted by god's grace and the compassion of others let us pray to the lord lord that god will bless the church where many with many priests deacons and religious so that the lord's promise of salvation may be heard by future generations let us pray to the lord r all the needs we hold in our hearts and for the special intentions entrusted to the national shrine prayer novena let us pray to the lord lord for all those who have died that they may enter into god's heavenly kingdom to live in peace and happiness forever let us pray to the lord r almighty god open our eyes to your divine presence in this world and in our lives help us to be faithful servants of christ and worthy stewards of your sacred mysteries through christ our lord amen we invite you to join in support of the ministry of the basilica of the national shrine during the unprecedented days where our ministry has been greatly limited your contributions are all the more appreciated thank you for being as generous as your means allow [Music] you [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Applause] me [Music] is [Music] oh oh [Music] so [Music] [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise for god holy spirit o god who provide gifts to be offered to your name and count our oblations as signs of your desire to serve you with devotion we ask of your mercy that what you grant as the source of merit may also help us to attain merit's reward through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just that we should give you thanks and praise o god almighty father for all you do in this world through our lord jesus christ for though the human race is divided by dissension and discord yet we know that by testing us you change our hearts and you prepare them for reconciliation even more by your spirit you move human hearts that enemies may speak to each other again adversaries join hands and peoples seek to meet together by the working of your power it comes about oh lord that hatred is overcome by love revenge gives way to forgiveness and discord is changed to mutual respect therefore as we give you ceaseless thanks with the choirs of heaven we cry out to your majesty on earth and without end we acclaim [Music] blessing is comes in [Music] you therefore almighty father we bless through jesus christ your son who comes in your name he himself is the word that brings salvation the hand you extend to sinners the way by which your peace is offered to us when we ourselves had turned away from you on account of our sins you brought us back to be reconciled oh lord so that converted at last to you we might love one another through your son whom for our sake you handed over to death and now celebrating the reconciliation christ has brought us we entreat you sanctify these gifts by the outpouring of your spirit that they may become the body and blood of your son whose command we fulfill when we celebrate these mysteries for when about to give his life to set us free as he reclined at supper he himself took bread into his hands and giving you thanks said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way on that same evening he took the chalice of blessing in his hands confessing your mercy gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Applause] the mystery of faith [Music] when we oh celebrating therefore the memorial of the death and resurrection of your son who left us this pledge of his love we offer to you what you have bestowed on us the sacrifice of perfect reconciliation holy father we humbly beseech you to accept us together with your son and in this saving banquet graciously endow us with his very spirit who takes away everything that estranges us from one another he make your church a sign of unity and an instrument of your peace among all people and may he keep us in communion with francis our pope wilton our bishop and his assistant bishops and all the bishops and your entire people just as you have gathered us now at the table of your son so also bring us together with the glorious virgin mary mother of god with your blessed apostles and all the saints with our brothers and sisters and those of every race and tongue who have died in your friendship bring us to share with them the unending banquet of unity in a new heaven and a new earth where the fullness of your peace will shine forth in christ jesus our lord through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may always be free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look
