[Music] [Music] welcome to our lady of louis parish in massapequa park new york i'm monsignor masathi we're delighted to be praying with you the eighth sunday in ordinary time let's pray together in the name of the father and of the son of the holy spirit amen dear friends the lord be with you to better prepare for us let's look into our hearts and so to confess our sins i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words and what i've done what i failed to do through my fall through my fall through my most grievous fall therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all of the angels and saints and to you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god and may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us all to everlasting life amen lord have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king oh god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us will you alone are the holy one you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father amen and so we pray let us pray that god will bring peace to our troubled world and freedom to all who believe lord god guide the course of world events give your church the joy and peace of serving you in freedom help us to be instruments of your peace and love we ask this through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you and the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of sirach when a sieve is shaken the husks appear so do one's faults when one speaks as the test of what the potter molds is in the furnace so in tribulation is the test of the just the fruit of a tree shows the care it has had so too does one's speech disclose the bent of one's mind praise no one before he speaks for it is then that people are tested the word of the lord [Music] lord it is god to give thanks to you [Music] lord it is not it is good to give thanks to the lord to sing praise to your name most high to proclaim your kindness at dawn and your faithfulness throughout the night the just one shall flourish like the palm tree like a cedar of lebanon shall he grow they that are planted in the house of the lord shall flourish in the courts of our god lord it is things to you they shall bear fruit even in old age vigorous and study shall they be declaring how just is the lord my rock in whom there is no wrong it is good to give thanks to you a reading from the letter of the of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters when this which is corruptible clothes itself with incorruptibility and this which is mortal clothes itself with immortality then the word that is written shall come about death is swallowed up in victory where o death is your victory where o death is your sting the sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law but thanks be to god who gives us the victory through our lord jesus christ therefore my beloved brothers and sisters be firm steadfast always fully devoted to the work of the lord knowing that in the lord your labor is not in vain the word of the lord [Music] [Music] shine like lights in the world as you hold on to the word of life [Music] [Music] my friends the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord jesus told his disciples a parable can a blind man guide a blind person will not both fall into a pit no disciple is superior to the teacher but when fully trained every disciple will be like this teacher why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own how can you say to your brother brother let me remove that splinter in your eye when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye you hypocrites remove the wooden beam from your eye first and then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye a good tree does not bear rotten fruit nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit for every tree is known by its own fruit for people do not pick figs from thorn bushes nor do they gather grapes from brambles a good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good but an evil person out of a sword evil produces evil for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks and this is the gospel of our lord thanks for being with us on this eighth sunday of ordinary time this mass and i guess all of our masses for quite a while will always be celebrated with a sensitivity to our brothers and sisters in ukraine and for their welfare and well-being and for an end to the violence being perpetrated against them by russia we'll talk more about that at the end but first let's get into talking about these wonderful readings and i want to start with the book of sirach this i think is the key line so too does one's speech disclose the best of one's mind and heart speech you have the gift of speech i have the gift of speech we can talk right now early on when you and i are being baptized one of the things the priest or deacon does is to bless our ears so we hear the goodness of god and our mouths so we'll speak the goodness of god but we're being told here in no uncertain terms by sirach that it's a gift from god to be used for his purposes and i'm going to suggest you that probably more than most other kinds of sins that we commit that the sin that is most prevalent for most of us is the misuse of the gift of speech that we don't use it often enough to build up and to often use it to tear down and i think syroc is giving us an important warning do we take for granted the gift of speech and not realize the power of the words we say the impact that has on people around us i had a good friend for many years i hope and pray she's in heaven now she happened to be an actress named patricia neal brought along a picture of both of us in younger years patricia neal was an actress and one well known because she had won the academy award as best actress in 1963 for a movie she co-starred in with paul newman called hud but that was just one of many many things she did she was the first mom on the show of the waltons and she had a long career both in broadway and in the movies and a television i mention that because shortly after she goes through this experience of taping the the movie hud she's now in her fifth pregnancy and she's a one night giving one of her daughters tessa a bath when she is felled by two incredibly powerful strokes and this woman who had made her life in acting in speaking lost everything the ability to walk the ability to see out of one side of her eye the ability to speak in any way her memory gone and it took her several years to come back with the help of her dedicated husband the author rual dahl and the people of her town in england who came over every day to help her re-learn how to learn to listen learn to speak learn to remember the people of her town one at a time came by to help her day in and day out to relearn what she had lost but when she had regained her ability to think and to remember and to speak and yes even to walk she said she had never really appreciated just taken for granted the incredible gift she had in being able to speak and the gift it was especially as an actress but she said when you lose it all when you can't point to a pencil and call it a pencil when you can't say anything that makes any sense at all it was all guttural sound for the first year after her strokes you come to realize what a divine gift she said it is to be able to communicate one so often we take for granted pat was lucky you know she was 39 at the time in fact one of the new york newspapers had as a headline the day after her strokes patricia neal 39 dies of a stroke she hadn't died she went into a coma and was in the coma for about a month but ultimately came out but i mentioned that she was amazing in her recovery and that while this happened in the early 60s by 1968 she was nominated for another academy award for the subject was roses her recovery had been so amazing because of the help of her husband her townspeople her doctors and her own will to get better but she never again took for granted the gift of speech it is a gift it is a divine gift god gives us the ability to communicate and expects us to use it well so how do we violate that divine gift i'm glad you asked we do it every time we curse and you know i have this one guy in particular who talks to me all the time and every other third or fourth word is the f word and then he catches himself i know you're a priest i'm really sorry about using that and i said you know you shouldn't apologizing for using the f word because i'm a priest you should use it because it's really an incredible admission of ignorance i mean you have a vocabulary it can be colorful i'm willing to listen to the colorful it's not very colorful to every fourth word use the f word in fact it's usually a sign of ignorance well it helps me to get out my feelings good find another way there are so many ways in which we can express ourselves cursing is a bad way cursing lying using the gift of speech to tell an untruth lying cursing when we gossip badly about other people you know we spread half truths about other people we hear a story we pass it on without knowing if it's accurate or not lying cursing swearing taking god's name for granted you know interestingly enough god is a great thing to say to turn to god when we're exasperated oh god when we put another thing at the end of his name that's not praiseworthy we're taking god's name and using it in vain not what was intended when we got the gift of speech from the man himself so these many many ways in which we use the gift of speech the wrong way cursing lying swearing gossip negativity prejudice bias how about this how about sarcasm you know i occasionally go to uh class reunions and when i do i have this one guy that i went through school with depending on his mood he can be one of the most cutting people in the world and he uses sarcasm to slice people up he's having a good day you've been passed by the angel of death but on a bad day watch out because you're gonna find a way to make you feel this small now you know to have sarcasm that is self-directed you know where you're self-deprecating that's really not such a terrible thing when you turn sarcasm outward to hurt another person to reduce them you're using the gift of speech not as god intended we're called on by this reading to recognize we are known by what we say it's a sign of what's in our mind and what's in our heart so what's in your mind what's in my mind what's in your heart what's in my heart and how is it revealed by the way in which we use or misuse use or abuse the gift of speech god gave it to us to build up let's start to seriously especially with the upcoming lent make ourselves a promise i will not speak before thinking first and asking myself is this really what i want these words are they want what i want to be reflected by as a sign of who i am or can i instead use the gift of speech to build up and to go positive and not to tear down and not to hurt people but rather use the gift of speech as sirach encourages us to as a sign of a healthy heart and healthy mind okay let's go to saint paul to the corinthians um here's a key key line there and you know what i'm going to pick on you've heard it before death is swallowed up in victory where o death is your victory where or death is your sting you know uh one survey done a few years ago said that people have two mortal fears one is a public speaking which i find interesting and the other is death that people are terrified of death they don't want to talk about it so for instance we go to a funeral we say how sad it is that that person died as if it's not going to happen to you and me death happens to us all and it's frightening for a lot of people frightening for all of us at one time in our lives but we are being told by saint paul don't be frightened there's no ultimate victory for death in fact just the opposite is true i mentioned to you some months ago i interviewed this guy jonathan rumi who plays jesus in the very popular series on tv called the chosen i mentioned that because he goes wherever he lands in filming his tv program to whatever catholic church he can find so he found one which was a very very conservative in fact it was completely about the tridentine mess and he walked in and he found a seriousness to the people a sadness to the people in intensity to the people he said that was totally absent of joy and he said you know i realize that sometimes people believe that seriousness in church indicates how deep our faith is he said but somewhere in there there's got to be room for joy and he said something it was interesting he said i wanted to into that church and say relax enjoy be happy we won death is conquered resurrection is real he was saying in so many ways what saint paul is saying death where's your sting death where where's your victory death is conquered by the death of jesus who on the cross conquered death for all time and in resurrection promised us that there's a rich and wonderful and real life beyond this life saint paul is just affirming that the concept of death and resurrection is not just a nice comforting thought it's for real and it's a reason for rejoicing finally let's go to the gospel this great great and powerful gospel by saint luke about uh probably the one sin that jesus mentions the most and if i said to you what is jesus's most often mentioned sin i hope you would say hypocrisy because that is as i counted 17 times in the gospels he says to us don't be calling people to live where you're not living yourself don't say you believe in something but you're not willing to practice what you believe in be real be genuine mean what you say practice what you preach be sincere and true and authentic and i think for all of us uh hypocrisy is a real temptation we look at the scribes and the pharisees and we see that they would call people to live a life that they weren't living and he's calling them out on that but he's not just calling out pharisees and scribes from 2000 years ago he's calling out you and me every time we're not sincere and true in saying this is what i believe and this is what i'm going to try to live are we going to fail sometimes for sure but at least let's be sincere and authentic in our attempt and he's saying to us and saying it's in this gospel one of the easiest ways to judge whether or not we fall victim to hypocrisy is look at the way we criticize others you see the the the speck in your brother's eye but you don't see the log in your own hey look in the mirror before you decide to judge and evaluate anyone else look in the mirror and what do you see do you see a person of conviction who lives what he says do you see someone who's sincere and authentic and true or do you see someone who says one thing but behaves in another way a couple of examples that come to mind remember the uh the age of bill clinton when he was president and his terrible scandal with monica lewinsky well something interesting happened in the congress a lot of republicans and some democrats were very very severe about condemning how horrible he was because of his extra sexual activities and they were right to do it mr clinton was wrong wrong wrong to exploit that young intern but one of the things that happened because these guys were attacking mr clinton so much is some folks did research and found time and time again that a lot of those congressmen who were most vociferous in condemning mr clinton were themselves carrying on extramarital affairs and it was a real come down for a lot of those congressmen to be called on what they themselves were condemning i think if they had read this gospel they'd realize before i throw a stone at mr clinton who deserved a few stones i better examine my own life it goes back to that great gospel of jesus remember the woman caught in adultery hey anyone here without sin you go and cast the first stone and one of the time the oldest through the youngest they put their stones down and walked away because they recognized that they were sinful and in no position to condemn that woman who had been caught in the sin of adultery and jesus is saying the same thing to you and me hey stop condemning and judging and evaluating people and putting them down and deciding that you're better and holy than they are make sure that your own life is a sign of goodness and virtue and authenticity before we point fingers at other people how about our own church you know i love that we are a pro-life church and that we talk about celebrating life from womb to tomb from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death so how then do we explain the generations and generations of child abuse that we not only allowed but covered up that's hypocrisy mr clinton's hypocrisy the congress people's hypocrisy our own hypocrisy as a church it's so easy to see everything that's wrong with others and not to recognize our own sinfulness you know i hope that i'm a decent confessor and one of the reasons i hope i'm a decent confessor is because i'm constantly aware of my own shortcomings my own sinfulness and i'm not going to judge or put down anybody for their sins until i am lily white clean which probably won't be till i'm hopefully standing before my god we are all of us incomplete we are all of us not what we should be and before we condemn the sins of others jesus is saying look into your own heart your own mind look into your own mirror of life and be careful not to judge and condemn others when you yourself are carrying the burden of sin hypocrisy a sin he mentions the most one we've got to be deeply deeply deeply conscious of so we don't find ourselves embracing the sin of calling people to live what we ourselves do not and finally i would be remiss i think every preacher worth assault this week i should be talking about this the people of ukraine are an innocent people they are a genuine democracy they have chosen their leaders they have chosen their sovereignty they have chosen all the things that they embrace and value russia has no business conquering ukraine but i want to say too that sometimes people say well it's not really russians it's it's mr putin you know he's the one that chose to do this and it always reminds me when i hear people say that of those who said well the german people were not guilty it was hitler but the german people followed hitler and allowed him the power to do the evil that he did and in the same way our russian brothers and sisters have to face the fact that they have put mr putin in this position of power he may hold it by virtue of his terror and fear and oppression but they put him there and what he chooses to do in slaughtering and destroying the people of ukraine is the responsibility of mr putin to be sure but also the responsibility of every russian citizen who doesn't speak up and say no mr putin you don't reflect me those people who have freely chosen their own government and are an autonomous and sovereign nation deserve the freedom to live without the oppression that we are now imposing on them as we speak as we watch this mass we know people every day are dying in ukraine because of the oppression of mr putin and the russian people who follow him and you know when people say uh uh you know well this is the way of the world this this power game it exists everywhere that never excuses it you know who remember the gospel we're told you know my my brother's keeper yes i am my brother's keeper i am responsible for what goes on in the rest of the world and i can't as an american say well that's way over there what's that eastern european country got to do with me it goes back to what we learned through hitler that every time we in any way equivocate and decide that it's not my problem we ultimately compromise all human dignity all human life because every time any person is diminished we share in that diminishment we are all connected we are part of the same human family and the atrocities committed by an innocent people in ukraine are our responsibility so i'm asking you to pray like crazy for an end to the violence i'm asking you to pray for an end to what goes on in mr putin's head and you know a lot of people have been saying well you know maybe he's just a madman and that's why he does these things that's too easy an excuse i don't want to write off what he does by explaining it as an act of madness i want to call it what it is it is pure existential evil and our job as catholic christians is to condemn evil wherever and however we see it mr putin's actions aren't just the work of a madman so somehow that excuses him it's the work of someone who embraces darkness someone who embraces evil someone who embraced the ways of satan to go after an innocent people and to destroy them as he right now is doing to other people of ukraine is evil evil evil and must be opposed and when you pray i ask you not only to pray for a change of his heart and mind and for the innocent people of ukraine but pray for our own leaders that they have the capacity to rise to the occasion and do the right thing you know sometimes mr biden has been doing fine on this but sometimes not so much when he said for instance that you know it depends on how deep the invasion goes how seriously we'll react to the invasion now can you imagine someone saying we're going to let another country just bite off florida but as long as we hold on to the other 49 states it's okay who would accept that no one you attack one state in the united states you attacked all of us in the same way mr biden no no you can't say we'll see how far he goes an invasion is an invasion period and then mr trump oh mr trump can you just flint maybe button it up and not say what is ever the first thing to come to your mind and so what does he say he says the attack by putin is brilliant an active genius he's not saying it's a good thing but he's kind of amazed by putin's genius no no mr trump it's not genius and it's not it's not amazing it's just evil and why don't you use that word mr trump wanted to say to attack an innocent people is just evil whether it's mr trump or mr biden or leaders of the free world god give them the ability to say the right thing to be about the right values not to compromise not to sell out those people but to recognize an attack on one is an attack on every free man and woman around the world and just as we hope and pray no one is ever at our doorstep saying i'll take a chunk of your country now i'll take away your freedom the freedom of the people of ukraine is our concern what am i my brother's sister or keeper yes the lord says we are as a people of faith we now pray i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen now with confidence in the goodness of god and trust in his mercy let's offer our prayers of petition that the pope and bishops and all who collaborate with them in ministry may experience the constant guidance of the holy spirit we pray to the lord hear our prayer that all who hold and seek public office may pursue the common of the common good above any another therefore we celebrate today the love and reconciliation christ has gained for us and we ask you father to sanctify these gifts of bread and wine by the power of your holy spirit so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ while he was at supper on the night before he died for us jesus took bread in his sacred hands and gave you father thanks and praise he broke the bread gave it to his disciples and said take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] when supper was ended jesus took a chalice filled with the fruit of the vine again father he thanked you for your goodness gave the chalice to his disciples and friends and he said take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and everlasting covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me let us proclaim the mystery of our faith [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] [Laughter] lord our god your son has entrusted to us this pledge of his love we celebrate the memory of his death and resurrection and we bring you the gift you've given to us this sacrifice of love and reconciliation therefore we ask you father to accept us together with your son fill us with his spirit through our sharing in this meal and may he take away all that divides us may the same spirit of love keep us in communion of mind and heart with francis our pope with john our bishop along with all the bishops the clergy the religious and all of god's people father make your church throughout the world a sign of unity and an instrument of your peace you've gathered us here today around the table of your son in fellowship with mary the virgin mother of god and saint joseph her devoted spouse and all the saints in that new world where the fullness of your peace will be revealed gather people of every race every language every way of life to share in the one eternal banquet with jesus christ who is our risen and our loving lord through him with him in him in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours almighty father for ever ever [Music] we are called on by our lord to practice what we preach to live fully and authentically what we hope and trust is our true value the real sin for us is hypocrisy not practicing what we preach calling to others to do what we ourselves don't do it's a universal sin i think let's in turning to the father in heaven now ask him to purge our hearts of that inclination and to live authentic lives our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord from every evil and grant us peace in our day in your mercy keep us free from sin protect us from all anxiety as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom of the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ you said to your apostles i leave you my peace my peace i give to you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and grant us the peace and unity of your kingdom where you live and reign one god forever and ever amen may the peace of the lord be with you always [Music] you take away the sins of our world have mercy on us [Music] love of god you take away the sins of our world [Music] you take away the sins of the world [Music] lord jesus christ with faith in your love and mercy we eat your body and drink your blood let it not bring us condemnation but health in mind and in body my friends behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those who are called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy they should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed may the body and blood of christ bring us all to share in everlasting life our spiritual communion my jesus i believe that you are present in the most holy sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself holy to you never permit me to be separated from you amen a couple of thoughts one would be uh to join pope francis in praying every single day for an end to the violence in ukraine and i know great damage will be done to that nation and to the people one of the best ways to charitably help the people whose lives will be upended they're counting on literally millions of refugees people lost their homes and property to this great attack by russia but one of the best ways to help is through catholic relief services and all you need to do is go online and punch that in www.catholicreliefservices.com and they are one of the most effective organizations in the world for getting help to people who really need it and our brothers and sisters in ukraine are certainly those people in need a picture that struck me in my heart it's a little children i mean like three four five six seven years old uh in a chapel praying the rosary for safety and peace for the ukrainian people the ukrainian children in the city of kiev now bombed by mr putin and we don't even know if those young children in the picture were praying the rosary for peace are still alive but we join them by praying our rosary for an end to the violence and that the world community will rise up and make clear to the totalitarians of this world that this cannot happen this cannot go on so i ask you to do that also as i was talking about the approaching lent what better way to make a promise to yourself for lent just like we make new year's promises that following on the first reading today we'll have better custody of the tongue that will say i'm going to get through these 40 days of lent without cursing lying swearing gossiping being negative being prejudiced being biased being sarcastic in a mean way for myself no road rage and for all those things that come out of our mouth that shouldn't uh give us some serious thought like what am i going to do for lent to make this a richer holier season as always i invite you to be with us on personally speaking with monsignor musanti um just by listening to it at the catholic channel on siriusxm 129 or by going to youtube and punching and personally speaking with my senior general santi uh e clayton cornelius a wonderful broadway actor african-american christian man is is the guest this week every week we have good guests who are really wonderful wonderful to listen to and to hear their perspective on faith and values so please tune in on youtube to personally speaking with monsignor genesanti and now let's continue to pray god of our salvation may the sacrament which strengthens us here on earth also lead us one day to share in the joy of eternal life in heaven and we ask this in the name of jesus the lord amen my friends the lord be with you and may almighty god bless you and your families in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen our mass has ended let us go in peace thanks be to god [Music] [Applause] on earth [Music] on earth the peace that was meant to be [Music] brothers [Music] walk with my brother in perfect time on me [Music] [Music] every stop i take let this be my song of all to take each moment and live its moment in peace [Music] on earth not it's begin with me [Music] you
