lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying the priest shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering aramean who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation [Music] great strong and numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction [Music] our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand and outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders and bringing us into this country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of this soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord [Music] be with me lord when i am in trouble greed with me lord when i am in trouble you who dwell in the shelter of the most high who abide in the shadow of the almighty say to the lord my refuge and fortress my god in whom i trust be with me lord when i am in trouble no evil shall be for nor shall affliction come near your tent for to his angels he has given command about you that they guard you in all your ways with me lord when i am in trouble upon their hands they shall bear you up lest you dash your foot against a stone you shall tread upon the asp and the viper you shall trample down the lion and the dragon be with me lord when i am in trouble because he clings to me i will deliver him i will set him on high because he acknowledges my name he shall call upon me and i will answer him i will be with him in distress i will deliver him and glorify him be with me lord when i am in trouble [Music] a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and so is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord [Music] glory to you word of god lord jesus christ [Music] christ of god lord jesus christ [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] glory to you word lord jesus [Music] christ lord jesus christ the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for forty days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command this stone to become bread jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve then he led him to jerusalem made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against a stone jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord in our gospel passage for this first sunday of lent is the familiar scene of our lord spending 40 days by himself in the desert for prayer that is our model for the way that we spend the 40 days of lent our lord did not need to spend those 40 days in the desert because he did not need to improve the reason saint john chrysostom says all our lord did and suffered was for our instruction saint john chrysostom adds that our lord consented to be led into the desert to be tempted so that when we are tempted we see those temptations are to be expected although our lord did not need to improve and yet spent those 40 days in the desert everyone else except the blessed mother always needs to improve but do we see that we need this season of lent to improve or do we feel lent is a time we really do not need but even though we do not need it we will go along with it and make the traditional lenten sacrifices and do the traditional devotions that we know are part of lent if a person does not feel they truly need these 40 days of lent the person might not concentrate as much on the lenten practices and that lack of concentration means less progress in the spiritual life and means the person would move away from god so we need this season to improve spiritually the fact that the devil would feel that he could tempt our lord is a reminder of the daily temptation we experience by the devil some of those temptations are weaker than others for example the temptation not to pray enough might be a weak temptation because we might like to spend that time in prayer but other temptations might be stronger and we have to anticipate them and take the steps to avoid them by avoiding the situations that might lead us to those temptations and we must pray to avoid them [Music] one way we pray to avoid those temptations is when we pray the confetair at mass that the blessed mother the angels and saints and our brothers and sisters in the faith pray for us when we notice that god has helped us to say no to a temptation we are to say a prayer of thanksgiving to god for that we are to avoid a temptation as soon as it comes because the longer we allow the temptation to remain the stronger it would become we do not need to fear we will not be able to say no to temptations because our lord gives us the grace we need to say no to any temptations and we need to say no to any temptations the devil puts before us but we must do our part to ask for our lord's grace through prayer and to cooperate with that grace through our efforts to avoid temptations and to put the virtues into practice a verse in our second reading today fits in with that teaching that god gives us all the grace we need to avoid any temptation when it says for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved lent is a time that reminds us of that need the fact that the devil tempts our lord in the gospel today is because the devil wanted to bring our lord down and that is the same reason the devil tempts us saint john chrysostom said the devil would not attack us with those temptations if he had not seen that we had been raised to a place of great honor by our baptism which makes us god's children and the other sacraments in which we receive god's life and so grow closer to god the fact that the devil wants to bring us down shows us the great gifts we have received from god our lord shows us how to be able to say no to those temptations by what he does in the desert he prays he fasts and he concentrates on scripture someone might say those temptations were easy for our lord to say no to because he is god but saint ambrose teaches that our lord did not use his power as god to overcome those temptations but rather saint ambrose says our lord used the ability he had in his human nature and so we cannot say we are not expected to follow our lord's example we see the difference between the way our lord acted in the desert and the complaints of the israelites as they wandered through the desert for 40 years in the old testament our lord's response to the devil that not on bread alone do we live is a reminder to us of the fact of our spiritual life which depends on our concentrating on our relationship with god in prayer and lent is a time in which we are helped to be more aware of that by means of the extra devotions offered by the church during this season the second temptation in the gospel today may be one that we think does not apply to us because no one is offering all the kingdoms of the world to us but when we see our lord's answer to that temptation we see how it applies to us as our lord says we are only to adore god do we become distracted from adoring god we adore god when we attend mass but in the rest of our day do other interests take our attention away from god instead of keeping our attention on god by prayer charity and sacrifice and finally in today's gospel we see it says the devil waited for another opportunity which reminds us as long as we live the devil will try to lead us away from god but we know god always gives us the grace to say no to every temptation in this celebration we receive the help to make the efforts needed to grow closer to god during this season of lent as our lord gives us his body and blood in holy communion and please stand for the creed i believe in one god the father almighty maker father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made christ's name for our salvation he came down from heaven by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds in the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen we raise our eyes hearts and voices to heaven asking god to answer our petitions for the church may god graciously grant us what we need as we serve him in truth and with justice let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for world leaders may they work for justice for all people especially people in ukraine and all who are maltreated and oppressed let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those preparing to celebrate the easter sacraments may they be filled with the light of christ let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the intentions presented by our partners in prayer group and the intentions that each of us bring to mass may those who have asked for our prayers know that they are not facing their difficulties alone let us pray to the lord hear our prayer for our beloved dead especially michelle martirella francis marzi and ronald tacorczyk may they be welcomed into the heavenly kingdom and rest in god's merciful presence let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer and for courtney hilaton for her spiritual and physical well-being let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer god of mercy and compassion keep us focused on repentance during this holy season strengthen us as we struggle to live lives worthy of the calling we received in baptism we ask this through christ our lord amen [Music] is is [Music] [Applause] [Music] so shall [Music] me foreign [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord give us the right dispositions o lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord r amen the lord be with you lift up your hearts lord let us give thanks to the lord our god and his right hand it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as with our end we acclaim [Music] [Applause] [Music] yes [Applause] you are indeed holy o lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ and whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] [Applause] therefore lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs with saint raphael and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope and david our bishop and william and mark his assistant bishops the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you in your compassion a merciful father gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who were pleasing to you at their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] [Applause] [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ he said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always amen let us offer to each other the sign of peace [Music] peace [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] behold the
