good morning uh for mass today we're going to sing a an entrance hymn and a recessional hymn which is um the same hymn so it's uh number 210 in the miscella so it's 2-1-0 in the missilet it's from ashes to the living font and uh we'll sing that both as a entrance and recessional in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the angel of the lord declared unto mary and she conceived of the holy spirit hail mary full of grace the lord is with thee blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb jesus holy mary mother of god pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death amen behold the handmaid of the lord be it done to me according to thy word hail mary full of grace the lord is with thee blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb jesus holy mary mother of god pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death amen and the word was made flesh and dwelt among us hail mary full of grace the lord is with thee blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb jesus holy mary mother of god pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death amen pray for us the holy mother of god that we may be made worthy of the promises of christ let us pray pour forth we beseech you o lord thy grace into our hearts that we to whom the incarnation of christ thy son was made known by the message of an angel may by his passion and cross be brought to the glory of his resurrection through the same christ our lord amen in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen from ashes to the living font your church must journey lord baptize in grace in grace renewed my your most holy word through fasting prayer and charity your voice speaks deep within [Music] returning us to ways of truth and turning us from sin in the name of the father and of the son of the holy spirit the lord be with you and with your spirit to prepare ourselves to celebrate these sacred mysteries let us acknowledge our sins you were sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy christ have mercy you are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life let us pray show gracious favor o lord we pray to the works of penance we have begun that we may have strength to accomplish with sincerity the bodily observances we undertake through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah thus says the lord god cry out full throated and unsparingly lift up your voice like a trumpet blast tell my people their wickedness and the house of jacob their sins they seek me day after day and desire to know my ways like a nation that has done what is just and not abandon the law of their god they ask me to declare what is due them please to gain access to god why do we fast and you do not see it afflict ourselves and you take no note of it though on your fast day you carry out your own pursuits and drive all your laborers yes your fast ends in quarreling and fighting striking with wicked claw wood that today you might fast so has to make your voice heard on high is this the manner of fasting i wish of keeping a day of penance that a man bow his head like a reed and lie in sackclock in ashes do you call this a fast a day acceptable to the lord this rather is the fasting that i wish releasing those bound unjustly untying the thongs of the yoke setting free the oppressed breaking every yoke sharing your bread with the hungry sheltering the oppressed and the homeless clothing the naked when you see them and not turning your back on your own then your light shall break forth like the dawn and your wound shall quickly be healed your vindication shall go before you and the glory of the lord shall be your rear guard then you shall call and the lord will answer you shall cry for help and he will say here i am the word of the lord thanks be to god a heart contrite and humbled o god you will not spurn the heart contrite and humbled o god you will not spurn have mercy on me o god in your goodness in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me will not spur for i acknowledge my offense and my sin is before me always against you only have i sinned and done what is evil in your sight for you are not pleased with sacrifices should i offer a burnt offering you would not accept it my sacrifice o god is a contrite spirit a heart contrite and humbled o god you will not spurn a heart contrite and humbled o god you will not spurn his holy gospel in the name of the father and of the son of the holy spirit glory and praise to you lord jesus christ glory and praise to you lord jesus christ seek good and not evil so that you may live and the lord will be with you glory and praise to you lord jesus christ [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew glory to you the disciples of john approached jesus and said why do we in the pharisees fast much but your disciples do not fast jesus answered them can the wedding guests mourn as the bridegroom is with them the day will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them and then they will fast the gospel the lord look at me god look at what i'm doing can't you see the efforts i'm making don't you see how often i pray don't you see what i do for the church don't you see what i do for the poor the first reading from isaiah gives us the indication that that's how god sees some of us sometimes look at me god look at what i'm doing i would think at least once in the course of our lives we say to god look at what i've done why is this happening to me why isn't it happening to the one who doesn't pray or doesn't go to church or doesn't do charity when we do that we kind of shirk the duties we have and we shrink away from the purpose of what we're doing so we know we heard in the fir in the opening prayer today that we are supposed to do with sincerity with sincerity the acts of penance that we've begun the acts of prayer and fasting and almsgiving and whatever aspects of those that we're doing right now we have to do them with the right attitude we have to do them not because god needs any of that god does not need our prayer god does not need our fasting god doesn't need our almsgiving he doesn't need anything from us and i think if we go into that with the attitude that we need from god then we'll produce better we'll bear more more fruit in what we do we're called to pray we're called to expand our relationship with god in fact i was reading the office of readings today from saint john chrysostom about how we set up our little house and we adorn our house of prayer with gold we adorn it in a way that is pleasing to god and from the prayers that we say we grow closer to our god we offer our prayer humbly and we offer it in a way that shows that we need the god that we're praying to that we couldn't possibly live without him when we fast in whatever way we're doing that we're telling god that there's something between him and us that we need to get out of our lives there's something we need to destroy in between us and him so we can get closer to him i told deacon jim i'm going old school this lent with my prayers i'm going to use my bravery my office of readings text i use my phone too often so i'm not going to use my phone to pray at least i'm going to try not to because after you're done praying you then go to twitter if you're using the old printed book there's nowhere to go when you're done praying except maybe the prayer cards that are stuffed in the back there's always something in our lives that's getting in the way of our relationship with god we need to fast from that in fact if it's something very serious fast it out entirely not just for a season of 40 plus days but for its entirety and when we do give alms we want to give alms from our hearts not because we have to i have to take care of the poor no i want to take care of the poor i recognize the blessings i have and i want to share those blessings with someone else who has not been blessed in the same way that i've been blessed so attitude has a lot to do with being authentic in this lenten observance not look at me god but help me god help me to be better at prayer help me to be self-less in almsgiving help me to be selfless in fasting so that i'm always thinking about myself and what pleases me and pleasures me so friends be authentic in your celebration of these 40 plus days let your attitude be one of praise and prayer of contrition of thanksgiving god will help you to bear fruit in all the efforts you make but not unlike what we hear god in a sense complaining about through isaiah today all those outward observances have to make something internal change all those outside observances that people can see need to make a change of our hearts and if our hearts change people are going to see much more than just those devotions or those efforts we make they're going to see a happier christian a christian who's more attentive to the needs of others a christian who is more christ-centered so by all means do all of those things i hope you all have devotions you're going to be part of these 40 days i hope you already have plans for how you're going to fast if you're able to physically to do that and how you're going to give ohms but do it with the right attitude offer it to god remember god doesn't need it it's going to rebound back to us in god's grace and his pleasure so the right attitude will bring forth the right fruit be authentic in what you do know why you're doing it and do it with a grateful heart prompted by the holy spirit and with confidence in the father's love for each of us we offer our prayers now in jesus name for the church throughout the world for all who have been anointed her leaders and for all who share in the one baptism we profess let us pray to the lord r lord hear our lord for our nations may we witness may the witness of committal christians foster an increased respect for human life let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all those who thirst for light in situations of great darkness may god's love lead them to everlasting life let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for this faith community may god help us engage in our litten sacrifices with sincerity and faithfulness let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all those who have died may they be welcomed into eternal joy by the angels and saints in heaven let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for the intention of this mass linda bombach let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer heavenly father strengthen us and make us sincere in our efforts during this season so that we may truly grow closer to you and closer than to the image of your son we ask this through christ our lord laughs blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you fruit of the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands will become our spiritual drink with humble spirit and contrite heart may be accepted by you o lord i may our sacrifice and your recite this day be pleasing to you lord god watch me o lord for my iniquities and cleanse me from my sins pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father we offer oh lord the sacrifice of our lenten observance praying that it may make our intentions acceptable to you and add to our powers of self-restraint through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for through bodily fasting you restrain our faults raise up our minds bestow both virtue and its rewards through christ our lord through him the angels praise your majesty dominions adore and powers tremble before you heaven and the virtues of heaven and the blessed seraphim worship together with exaltation may our voices we pray join with theirs in humble praise as we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy oh lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore oh lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries from the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death therefore o lord as we celebrate the memorial of a saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope and david our bishop the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you in your compassion o merciful father gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who are pleasing to you at their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever jesus taught us to call god our father and so now we have the courage to pray our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not in our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always let us offer each other the sign of peace lamb of god [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb should enter lord my roof but only say the word of my soul so lord make me know your ways teach me your paths hmm foreign one you um let us pray we pray almighty god that through partaking of this mystery we may be cleansed of all our misdeeds and so be suited for the remedies of your compassion through christ our lord just a couple of things before we depart you know i mentioned on ash wednesday at the school mass that if our lenten observance begins and ends with ashes then we've not only missed the point of the ashes but we failed already so there has to be an entire season and hopefully the season will change us also i mentioned in a hummel yesterday and i didn't want to mention it during this homily because i want people saying he's repeating himself but i suggested at mass yesterday that we not keep the veneration of the cross just for good friday afternoon you locate the crucifix in your house and take time during the season of land take it off the wall look at it contemplate it think about it pray while you're looking at it and venerate it you know it's so very important that that crucifix be central in our homes and central in our hearts so that we understand and remember always what this all means so consider using the crucifix in your home during your prayer during the season of lent take it down dust it off meditate on it contemplate the wounds consider the love that brought the lord to that cross and venerate it the lord be with you bow down for the blessing for your mighty deeds o god of mercy may your people offer endless thanks and by observing the age old disciplines along their pilgrim journey may they merit to come and behold you forever through christ our lord may almighty god bless you the father and the son and the holy spirit amen go in peace glorifying the lord through your lives thanks be to god saint michael the archangel defend us in battle may our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil may god rebuke him we humbly pray and do thou o prince of the heavenly host by the power of god cast into how satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls amen and the stations of the cross will begin after we've had our closing hymn the closing hebrews number 210 again we'll sing verse 4. from ashes to the living your church must journey still through cross and tomb to we stir joy in spirit fire fulfilled [Music] so so uh foreign
