foreign [Music] r [Music] [Music] is oh oh like [Music] and the oh [Music] women and blessed jesus [Music] god [Music] [Music] oh oh [Music] oh foreign [Music] [Music] now uh the archangels thank you [Music] so good morning and welcome to st mary of pine bluff one announcement today every household received a letter from bishop hein regarding the 2022 diocese of madison annual catholic appeal each family should prayerfully consider making a pledge payable over six months to the appeal your gift will enable the diocese to reach its goal and provide for many ministries education and services throughout our diocese please be generous [Music] hey [Music] oh [Music] hey [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] so so [Music] foreign oh is [Music] oh [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] ah in the name of the fallen son of the holy spirit the lord be with you my brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate these sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts in my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin [Music] and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] christopher [Music] is [Music] glory to god in the highest and [Music] lord jesus christ [Music] mercy on most us jesus christ with the holy spirit [Music] let us pray grant us o lord we pray that the course of the world may be directed by your parochial rule and that your church may rejoice untroubled in her devotion through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever [Music] a reading from the book of sirach when a sieve is shaken the husks appear so do one's fault when one speaks as the test of what the potter molds is in the furnace so in tribulation is the test of the just the fruit of a tree shows the care it has had so too does one speech disclose the bent of one's mind praise no one before he speaks for it is then that people are tested the word of the lord oh [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters when this which is corruptable clothes itself with incorruptibility and this which is mortal closed itself with immortality then the word that is written shall come about death is swallowed up in victory whereo death is your victory where o death is your sting the sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law but thanks be to god who gives us the victory through our lord jesus christ therefore my beloved brothers and sisters be firm steadfast always fully devoted to the work of the lord knowing that in the lord your labor is not in vain the word of the lord [Music] oh is the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke [Music] jesus told his disciples a parable can a blind man guide a blind man will not both fall into a pit no disciple is superior to the teacher but when fully trained every disciple would become like his teacher why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own how can you say to your brother brother let me remove that splinter in your eye when you don't even notice the wooden beam in your own eye you hypocrite remove the wooden beam from your eye first then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye a good tree does not produce rotten fruit nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit every tree is known by its own fruit for people do not pick figs from thorn bushes nor do they gather grapes from brambles a good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks the gospel of the lord [Music] so you can see the big screen here we're going to watch uh just the amazing ministries that uh are produced by our diocese and we'll do that first and then uh i'll be back since the earliest days of our church the faithful have set out on pilgrimage to jerusalem to rome to santiago to benton wisconsin okay so maybe pilgrimages to benton wisconsin aren't as ancient as others but for the past three years the faithful of our diocese have come together to journey from dubuque iowa to the village of benton this past august i joined more than 70 people who spent three days trekking through southwestern wisconsin pilgrimage reminds us that our faith life isn't static we're always moving forward journeying to heaven on the day we are baptized we set out on pilgrimage for the father's house that is our goal when i think about the pilgrimages i've done in the past i think of all the people that helped me along the way those who fed me housed me gave me water offered encouragement we never pilgrimage alone whether we're walking towards an earthly destination or we're walking towards eternal life it's why here in the diocese of madison we seek to provide program services and initiatives to help our more than 200 000 catholics and the broader community and to provide this support we need your support each year around this time we ask for both your prayers and your financial backing so we may continue providing programs and services of excellent quality to catholics and people of all ages the theme for this year's annual catholic appeal is open the way for the gospel your generosity helps us to continue supporting all of the initiatives events and programs that provide support on our journey towards the father's house we are abundantly blessed here in the diocese of madison the offerings are vast think of camp grey love begins here dozens of top-notch catholic schools provide remarkable formation in college ministries both at uw-platteville and madison encourage students in their faith when distractions are at an all-time high catholic charities the catholic multicultural center hispanic and migrant ministry rural life ministry and others do outstanding work reaching out to the vulnerable among us additionally the funds raised by our aca go to provide training for our teachers seminarians priests and our family ministries and your support allows us to maintain our diocesan cemeteries that they may remain beautiful and reverent places none of this is possible without you and we cannot express enough our gratitude to you for your continued support we encourage you to open the way for the gospel open your hearts to the possibility of god and his love for you and listen to the truth of the catholic church speaks when we embrace it we find a life of joy purpose and meaning beyond anything we can fabricate on our own and in this pilgrimage of life from birth to eternity we strive to serve you and support you on this spiritual journey so why do we walk from dubuque dependent [Music] because we follow in the footsteps of a man named father samuel mazzuchelli a remarkable person born in 1806 in milan italy he became a dominican at the age of 17. mazzakelli had a tremendous zeal for mission work so he came to america in 1828 right away he got to work evangelizing the vastness of the wild mid-19th century midwestern united states his fervor took him all over the midwest he built churches established schools and even helped with city planning when given the task of naming the streets of shalsburg wisconsin he chose the virtues travel to schulzberg and you might find yourself at the corner of faith and mercy there are more than 20 parishes in our diocese that trace their roots to the work of father mazu kelly for him every place every relationship every opportunity was a moment for him to proclaim the gospel of christ the extraordinary good news of jesus christ crucified and risen each of us should strive to be more like him so that is why we walked certainly much has changed since the time of father mazza kelly but the human heart has not human desires have not changed we're all still looking for meaning and purpose to realize that our life has some vast significance beyond the daily and the ordinary as we walk toward the final resting place of father mazza kelly what a joy to share it with so many wonderful people journeying together towards the prize father mazzakelli roamed this wild land more than 150 years ago long before pope pius xii established our beloved diocese 75 years ago in many ways though father mazzakelli is the spiritual father that planted the seeds of the diocese of madison in 1993 saint john paul the second declared mazzakelli venerable and with gratitude for his example we pray that his cause for beatification and canonization will soon follow friends it's an enormous blessing to serve as your bishop as we journey towards the father's house together know of my continued prayers for you thank you for your prayers and for your financial support of all the goodness being done here in the diocese of madison venerable father mazza kelly pray for us [Music] so the diocese is set aside this weekend for the um uh annual catholic appeal and i just know too that you know you've heard me say before you guys get it and i've always pointed to that holy spirit gift of wisdom and you do get it and you understand that there are many forces right now that are coming against us and we need to be a united force as a parish but then as a diocese and then as the roman catholic church so we can be those lights those bright lights that push out the darkness and we have parishioners who are i mean um dice and employ employees that are parishioners are in our pews and i know they sacrifice they don't get paid a lot they put in a lot more hours than they uh get paid for and they're just beautiful souls so this is a beautiful way for us to uh contribute to the many beautiful missions that our diocese does and i know you've been so generous in the past i pray you're uh you continue to do so so i'm off the script here what do we got so um so ask one member of each household to take a pledge envelope and a pencil please open the envelope and uh in the space provided print your first and last names complete address phone and email address while you're doing that i'm going to take the time to say this wednesday is ash wednesday and it begins our lenten journey and this is going to be a very very special one for us here's the our lord falling and deeply in love with him like we've never been before so that's kind of my synopsis what this is all about but you've heard me talk before about it so i've got about a dozen or six or so of these journals in the back i've got a box full over the rectory if we run out of those so you can get your journal if you haven't gotten it already all right let's continue so uh if you have already made a gift to the aca by mail please check the box at the bottom of the envelope until or under the credit card eft section and do not fill out in any thing else at this time ask everyone else to look at the right side of the envelope and check the amount that you wish to give if you wish to contribute an amount other than the ones that are indicated please check the box other and write in your pledge amount and then toward the bottom please confirm your gift amount and select if you will be paying this all at once or a six months or in six monthly payments please also consider wherever your parish has decided to collect these be sure to not seal the pencil inside the envelope how am i doing a few more heads are still lowered on behalf of bishop hein and everyone throughout the diocese thank you for your contribution to the catholic annual appeal and may god bless you and your family and while those are being collected uh just one more thing about our 90-day journey that begins on ash wednesday uh i will be emailing daily reflections it's just going to be like two or three lines with a link that you can read the a larger part of that reflection um you can go to read that but anyways it's just food for thought for doing your daily mental prayer just kind of get the wheels turning the first 40 days will come from the let freedom ring book that father peckman father altman and myself wrote and the last 50 days will be from the uh 54 day basic training and holiness that i wrote and you'll you'll get that in your email every day if you sign up um for the u.s grace force you can go to usgraceforce.com to find a place to sign up for the u.s grace force i'm so excited about this this awesome i made it look really good because i want us to take this super seriously thanks guys [Music] basically to just um there's a few little prayers that we want to get ingrained to do daily morning offering the angelus rosary uh but the big thing is to take 15 minutes every day in quiet hey honey i'm going to be up in the corner of the bedroom can you watch the kids you know doing your mental prayer okay we need that thanks everyone you've always been very generous i'm very
