Steve Martin Reads Funny Memories from His Diary on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show — 1989

I'll have to be honest with you I I can't lie to you we know each other too well I don't not seen Parenthood yet encouraged to keep going every minute would that be funny you just get you never come back at all never wouldn't that be funny and you know we don't want to mess up your routine on that I mean the number of times you've been here this is your somebody pointed out you have any idea how many periods that you've made I try the years I think it's like 60 or so I'm 66 66 66 because I always keep a diary of the show and I know how I did when material used in how it went over and I'll think that's interesting yeah I always I've always kept that with all my diary ripped right I bring it down with me and like after the show I make quick notes on how it went so I know what I did so I don't God forbid ever repeat any material out that's right that's a show there's a sin that would be terrible wouldn't it why did you do something you did five years ago that no one remembered that went great then do it again Eileen did you know you did you bring your diary tonight I always go with yeah well you want me to read something yes oh if it's not too personal no no that's fine sure David's IV is intentionally personal of possession you know and I wouldn't want you think every show business personality should keep a diary of how their shows win mm-hmm let's see here's one December 8 1980 for a Tonight Show good show went well lots of laughter Edie very funny Johnny seems sluggish well that can happen I mean yeah but we all have what's in a while you have an off night absolutely every performer has those April 2nd 1985 great shot I felt great audience was great wall-to-wall laughs everything seemed to work edge funniest I've ever seen him Johnny seems sluggish yeah this is 66 appearances you know I did a lots of them November 12 1985 very funny a parents did longer than usual because things were going so well doc exciting colorful and vibrant haha ed was hilarious Johnny the scene seems to be there in fact he wasn't there was Jay Leno October 2nd 1986 sensational appearance I was really on a roll one of my best shots audience was really hot and by you sluggish let's see September 24th 1987 I was hysterical lots of ad-libbing that played all sensationally johnny was terrifically funny there's a note here if you can call sluggish December 5th 1987 oh I was bad real bad but compared to Johnny and Edie April 10th 1988 great show one of my best audience seemed to love me big applause Edie doc Johnny sluggish like a sluggish well how about tonight's show now you why would you after the show you will I will fill in how I met we'll do that now yes why not that's my driver others no please let's see you'll die we have the date here so it'd be August 30th August in 89 right great appearance top of my form uh audience loved me just underlying that not only is the comedy funny but it has depth and meaning much of the audience actually felt moved and laugh through their tears see Johnny - jeez I believe Punky's luggage right once the program I was missing eggie eggie shot funny them good see again thanks nice to be back even though I have not seen the picture I your marvellous think it down sit down I your marvelous think about it now you don't have children I get rid of this now sure you can oh no I don't you don't hafta Jen you're working with kids I was working with kids and there are a lot of you know there a lot of kids on the set first Ron Howard has kids all the actors and actresses had kids and we had kid actors you like today like kids they were great they were great course I had it easy because I only had him on weekdays uh and when I went home at 7:00 but I really I got along with them well you know I found that through humor you can really down reach them and they they catch on to your sense of humor and you get a little and you can't talk down to them oh you can't talk down yeah cuz they sense it right away if you're being patronizing yeah in fact we used to do a gag alright with that I would teach them it and every morning the little girl go and the little boy Jason and Alison they'd go Steve and then run at me this was all rehearsed we'd do it in front of people and as that run toward me I'd put my hand on their heads and throw them to the ground
