Steve martin has some of the best comedy i've ever heard, anyone who hates on his material clearly doesn't understand the character he is playing. He is one of my all time favorites, and he rips the banjo on top.
If you find this to not be that funny, listen to his Let's Get Small album. A lot of the jokes he's doing are from that album, but he's cramming them into a tiny set for this appearance, so the timing is off. He's definitely goofy, but without the space for timing he just comes off cheesy and a bit cringy.
I'll admit that Steve Martin has a few funny moments throughout his career. However, his humor isn't entirely inclusive for a diverse audience. One could argue that his jokes are fitting for his era but wouldn't be so widely accepted now.
I can't see Steve Martin killing it without thinking of this classic clip featuring Thoros of Myr: https://youtu.be/PFi8NOqgRus
Look I went in with 0 opinion on Steve Martin's standup but that was just not funny.
I would think maybe it was funny in its time, but even the audience wasn't that into it.
My guess is the younger crowd won't "get" Steve. Comedians are more structured now and almost ALL are observational. Steve is more in the lines of Andy Kaufman and more performance art comedy, which was much bigger in the 70s. They played characters and tried to keep the audience off balance.
People are so used to the "punch line" comedian (that Steve actually makes fun of here), they don't know how to interpret Steve. You'll just have to believe when I say he "killed" back in the day. His albums were HUGE.
