your peaceful rule and that your church may rejoice untroubled in her devotion through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen and as i invite you to be attentive to the readings our old testament reading and our new testament reading i'd like to begin by setting up the old testament reading let you know the context from the prophet sirach we're going to hear the importance of effective speech is a favorite wisdom topic in this section of the book of sirach the author expounds on how one speaks reflects their character the prophet states so does one's speech disclose the bent of one's mind and let us be attentive to god's word a reading from the book of sirach when a sin is shaken the husks appear so do one's faults when one speaks as the test of what the potter molds is in the furnace so in tribulation is the test of the just the fruit of the tree shows the care it has had so too does one's speech disclose the bent of one's mind praise no one before he speaks for it is then that people are tested the word of the lord thanks be to god lord it is good to give thanks to you lord it is good to give thanks to you [Music] it is good to give thanks to the lord to sing praise to your name most high to proclaim your kindness at dawn and your faithfulness throughout the night lord it is good to give thanks to you the just one shall flourish like the palm tree like a cedar of lebanon shall he grow they that are planted in the house of the lord shall flourish in the courts of our god lord it is good to give thanks to you they shall bear fruit even in old age vigorous and sturdy shall they be declaring how just is the lord my rock in whom there is no wrong lord it is good to give thanks to you so our next reading is taken from saint paul's letter to the corinthians his first letter saint paul in his first letter to the corinthians reflects on the harvest of our sinful nature or of our virtue for the good people saint paul says they know their toil is not in vain they shall bear fruit for eternal life let us be attentive to god's word a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters when this which is corruptable clothes itself with incorruptibility and this which is mortal clothes itself with immortality then the word that is written shall come about death is swallowed up in victory where o death is your victory where o death is your state the sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law but thanks be to god who gives us the victory through our lord jesus christ therefore my beloved brothers and sisters be firm steadfast always fully devoted to the work of the lord knowing that in the lord your labor is not in vain the word of the lord thanks be to god oh [Music] [Music] hallelujah [Music] [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord jesus told his disciples a parable can a blind person guide a blind person will not both fall into a pit no disciple is superior to the teacher but when fully trained every disciple will be like his teacher why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own how can you say to your brother or sister let me remove that splinter in your eye when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye you hypocrite remove the wooden beam from your eye first then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother or sister's eye a good tree does not bear rotten fruit nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit for every tree is known by its own fruit for people do not pick figs from born bushes nor do they gather grapes from brambles a good person out of the store of goodness in their heart produces good but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks the good news the gospel of the lord praise you lord jesus christ so my brothers and sisters we just read from the prophet sirach and that's actually one little section he says as the test of what the potter mold is in the furnace so in tribulation is the test of the just so basically saying a piece of pottery is only as good as how it was fired and we've talked about being tested and being tried by fire we have that in the book of wisdom we hear a lot at funerals how the soul is tested by fire when i was a franciscan a postulant in loreto pennsylvania i remember there was one time that we were allowed to go to a neighboring business it was a ceramic business and they would open up and have people come in and make pottery items make ceramic items of course mainly they had the molds and you would pick and choose from the molds but then you would get to decorate by special paint whatever you were making i decided to make a big pouring picture picture for my mother and what i learned was that in order to have this paint uh adhere to the pottery it had to be fired into it but it wasn't just about solidifying the paint but it was about making the picture strong enough to really be used as a pitcher so i learned about how fire tries and how fire in a kiln will make a piece of pottery strong and that's basically what the prophet sirack is saying that's what happens to us so now we look at the gospel in the gospel of luke has jesus has several sayings of jesus it's almost like you can picture that these things weren't all said at one time the the luke the gospel writer pieces these together so the kind of independent images independent ideas but trying to make the same point the first thing jesus says can a blind person guide a blind person will not both of them fall into the pit that's obvious the thing is we're trying to not be blind jesus was very critical of the pharisees because he was saying things that they came back and said are you calling us blind and he said no no no the sad part is you're not blind but you don't want to really see the truth and that's a hard thing for us it's always a hard thing for us you know he goes on and and talks about how we're supposed to um not so much notice the splinter in our brother or sister's eye because we've got this plank in our own i think that's particularly difficult because again it's i'm not sure i always want to see the truth about myself i know i'm weak i know i've got failings but a lot of times what bothers me the most in someone else is really probably one of those things that i practice myself and that probably may be why it bothers me you know i remember on one occasion my one brother had said or done something i forget what it was but i i got upset and so i go running to my other brother and this we were already grown uh and telling them how our other brother did this and it reminded me of those times i didn't want to remember how my dad would get when he got into that kind of attitude or whatever frame of mind if you will and my brother says to me he says well jim the truth of the matter is ask anybody in the family who is more like our father it's you and the minute he said that i knew it was true i'm gonna like i knew it was true i didn't want it to be true in this regard but then he goes on he says but there's many many things about our dad that i'm glad we have you know and i can see that now has benefited me but it was that that part that i didn't want it to be true because i didn't want that to be how i would act but i did jesus says among the other sayings he says a good tree does not bear rotten fruit nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit i mean obvious again by their fruit you will know them you know i i particularly emphasize the fruit of the spirit you can find that in galatians chapter 5 verse 22. i encourage you to look that up maybe a good thing for lent to look at that look at those fruits those nine fruits of the spirit and maybe ask yourself how am i doing with these how am i doing with the love the joy the peace the patience the kindness the generosity the faithfulness the gentleness and the self-control those are good ways to examine yourself every day every night maybe just run down those and thank god for the ways that you are doing that but always ask for help for the ways you need help the final phrase of the gospel might be a good lenten mantra for us you know lent is coming on wednesday i announced that at the beginning of mass from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks so i might come to the lord and say lord show me the fullness of my heart and help me to be transformed i love that prayer of surrender that i say every sunday and at every one of these masses that spiritual act of communion i like the beginning of it and it says divine savior transform me into yourself so it's all about being transformed being converted so as lent starts may we maybe focus more on how can i be more transformed become more like my divine savior and then that last part you know that grant that i may live in you and by you and for you that's really what it's all about to live in and by and for the lord especially as we find ourselves with each other so think about how you might be able to do that this lent one step at a time one act at a time and then i may be able to say with saint paul i live now not i but christ lives in me god bless [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] and let us together make our profession of faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen out of the divine goodness that grows in our hearts through the holy spirit let us pray for our needs and the needs of all people that those who guide the mission of the church may be selfless in preaching the gospel of jesus christ us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that world leaders and government officials may be steadfast in building up the human family we continue to pray for the people of ukraine let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that all people in their own vocation may be fully devoted to the lord's work let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that we who sing psalms of praise in this assembly may be generous in serving the needy outside it let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that those who have died especially our beloved family members and friends all deceased members of st patrick and saint brandon parishes and all those who have died due to code of 19 may be clothed in the immortality won by christ victory over death and in this mass we remember louis jimroni carmen ross john j simato let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for our own intentions let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer god of saints and sinners as we open our ears to hear your son's word we ask you to open our lives to receive what is for our good and answer to these prayers yours be the praise and the glory now and always through jesus christ our lord amen so blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have this bread to offer you fruit of the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life blessed be god forever but the mystery of this water and wine come to share the divinity of christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity and blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have this wine to offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink blessed be god forever pray my sisters and brothers that our gifts may be acceptable to almighty god may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all is holy church o god who provide gifts to be offered to your name and count our oblations as signs of our desire to serve you with devotion we ask of your mercy that what you grant as the source of merit may also help us to attain marriage reward through christ our lord amen and the lord is with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for in you we live and move and have our being and while in this body we not only experience the daily effects of your care but even now possess the pledge of life eternal for having received the first fruits of the spirit through whom you raised up jesus from the dead we hope for an everlasting share in the paschal mystery and so with all the angels we praise you as in joyful celebration we acclaim [Music] holy holy holy your lord [Music] blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord is [Music] [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will report out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith when we [Music] again [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we are for you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you and humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and mark our bishop and all who love and serve your people remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god her husband joseph with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may be coheirs to eternal life that may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] [Music] oh [Music] as the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to pray our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord from every evil and graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant us the peace and unity of your kingdom where you live and reign for ever and ever amen and the peace of the lord be with you always and with your spirit let us now turn to each other and offer a sign of [Music] of peace you take away the sins of the world [Music] is [Music] [Music] behold the lamb of god who takes away the sins of the world blessed are we who are called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word in my soul shall be healed and now let us make our spiritual act of communion divine savior transform me into yourself divine savior transforming into yourself may my hand be your hands may my hands be your hands may my tongue be your tongue may my tongue be your toe grant that every faculty of my body grant that every faculty of my body may serve only to glorify you may serve only to glorify you above all transform my soul above all transform my soul and all its powers and all its powers that my memory my will in my affections that my memory my will and my affections may be the memory the will and the affections of you may be the memory the will and the affections of you i pray you to destroy in me i pray you to destroy in me all that is not of you all that is not of you grant that i may live in you and by you and for you grant that i may live in you and by you and for you and that i may say with saint paul and that i may say with saint paul i live now not i i live now not i but christ lives in me but christ lives in me amen amen so this let us pray nourished by your saving gifts we beseech your mercy lord that by this same sacrament with which you feed us in the present age you may make us partakers of life eternal through christ our lord amen and the lord is with you and with your spirit bow your heads and pray for god's blessings [Music] be with you each and every day [Music] may the father in his goodness keep you in his care [Music] may the spirit rest within you making you his home [Music] may the love of jesus fill you always to remain [Music] now and ever more and may almighty god bless you the father the son and the holy spirit amen let us go in peace glorify the lord by our life thanks be to god [Music] there is a longing in our hearts oh lord for you to reveal yourself to us there
