[Music] there is a longing in our hearts oh lord for you to reveal yourself to us there is a longing in our hearts for love we only find in you our god for justice for freedom for mercy hear our prayer in sorrow in [Music] [Applause] grief god for wisdom for courage for comfort him our prayer in weakness and fear be near hear our prayer oh there is a longing in our hearts oh lord for you to reveal yourself to us there is no longing [Music] in the name of the father the son and the holy spirit the grace and peace of god our father the love of the lord jesus christ and the fellowship of the holy spirit be with all of you and my brothers and sisters on this the first sunday of lent as always we once again come before the lord especially we might be thinking of the ways that we have to resist temptations as we hear in today's gospel so of the times that we have failed to do this we ask god's mercy and strength lord jesus lord have mercy you came to great salvation christ have mercy christ have mercy lord jesus the right hand of the father lord have mercy lord have mercy and may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us all to everlasting life amen and let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of holy lent that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever and let us be attentive to god's word a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying the priest shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering aramean who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong and numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand and outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders and bringing us into this country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord be with me lord when i am in trouble be with me lord when i am in trouble you who dwell in the shelter of the most high who abide in the shadow of the almighty say to the lord my refuge and my fortress my god in whom i trust [Music] in trouble no evil shall befall you nor shall affliction come near your tent for to his angels he has given a command about you then they guard you in all your ways [Music] upon their hands they shall bear you up lest you dash your foot against the stone you shall tread upon the aspen the viper you shall trample down the lion and the trigon [Music] a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does the scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and so is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord [Music] [Music] glory and praise to you lord jesus christ [Music] glory and praise lord jesus christ [Music] create me a clean heart purify my soul restore my joy in your salvation praise [Music] [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command this stone to become bread jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve then he led him to jerusalem made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against the stone jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ my brothers and sisters so we just read in today's gospel from luke uh the same account of jesus being in the desert being tempted it says filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan was led by the spirit into the desert for forty days to be tempted by the devil when i was reading that i was thinking uh of a couple of prayers that we pray one is the act of contrition and in the act of contrition at least the old one it says i will avoid the near occasion of sin or i will avoid temptation the other is the lord's prayer where we pray every single time we pray lead us not into temptation now when i think of jesus i have i asked myself why did jesus need to be tempted why was that necessary it says the spirit led him in the desert for that purpose so why there must have been a reason you know i'm thinking could it have been a like a test spin see how he does uh or maybe a dry run it goes back for me the axiom of the church that says what was not assumed was not redeemed so jesus christ as god could not be tempted you cannot tempt god or that or it's not god but you contempt a human being human beings have free will a choice to make and jesus as a human being had to choose just like the rest of us to resist certain temptations now the three temptations were quite unique to jesus because he was the son of god and fully human fully divine you could say the the temptations were made to order for jesus and and his person and the first temptation was if you are the son of god command the stone to become bread so there was this temptation to use this god-like power for something that it was not meant to be used for and that's for his own personal comfort uh it's having the power yes you can use it but it's there to be used a certain way and for jesus it was not for his own comfort it reminds me of a story about this this woman in her office who had made an announcement that she was going to go on a diet and she would be very strict about it so one day she shows up at work with a box of donuts and and all of her fellow employees go like wait a minute mary didn't you say you were really serious about this diet you went on she said oh yes yes yes but but you know i i drive here i drive right by dunkin donuts and so i was praying to the lord to give me guidance and i prayed to the lord i said if if if you want me to go in and buy donuts then have that parking space right in front of the building right in front of that door open vacant you know after seven times around the building there it was you know sometimes we uh we can rationalize just about anything and she certainly was rationalizing that the lord wanted her to go ahead it says i shall give all this power and glory to you showing all the lands and all that said i have the power to give this to you so just ask for it ask for bow before me and ask for it and it's yours again tempting jesus as the human person to take a hold of something that he didn't need and he wasn't it wasn't his mission it wasn't his purpose to come here for that as he said i came not to be served but to serve and then finally if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against the stone again the temptation of using his god like power that he had available to avoid human condition to avoid being human of being somebody that didn't have to worry he could throw himself down and he wouldn't get harmed in a a in 12-step program there there's an acronym that comes to mind that has a lot to do with when are we most vulnerable to be tempted for anything really it's halt h-a-l-t hungry angry lonely and tired those are key moments when we are most vulnerable to be tempted when we're hungry we're angry we're lonely we're tired you know each one of us is unique and so what tempts you might not tempt me and what tempts her might not tempt you and so on so forth so it's unique to each one of us and so we pray lord help me to deal with that which really tempts me that may be different than somebody else so as we journey through our lent let us count on the lord's strength to help us to avoid temptation even though we may not always be successful but we know we have god's mercy to help us to continue even if we fail one time or another time we can always start again have a blessed lent god bless [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so so [Music] and now my brothers and sisters in the spirit of jesus who offered fervent prayer to his father in the desert let us pray as god's repentant people that christians everywhere may be responsive to the word of god during this holy season let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that government leaders may work for peace and make these days the acceptable time of god's salvation we continue to pray for ukraine for their citizens and leaders for peace let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer lord god defender of the tempted help your people turn again to you and serve you with all their hearts with confidence in your power over evil we have asked your help may we know your mercy and love in our lives we make this prayer through christ our lord [Music] yes blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have this bread to offer you fruit of the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life and blessed are you lord god about creation for through your goodness we have this wine to offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink pray my sisters and brothers that our gifts may be acceptable to almighty the glory of god name for our good good of all the church give us the righteous dispositions o lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord and the lord is with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim [Music] oh [Music] blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord [Music] [Music] you are indeed holy and to be glorified o god who love the human race and who always walk with us on the journey of life blessed indeed is your son present in our midst when we are gathered by his love and went as once for the disciples so now for us he opens the scriptures and breaks the bread therefore father most merciful we ask that you send forth your holy spirit to sanctify these gifts of bread and wine that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ on the day before he was to suffer on the night of the last supper he took bread and said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice gave you thanks and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] again [Music] therefore holy father as we celebrate the memorial of christ your son our savior whom you led through his passion and death on the cross to the glory of the resurrection and whom you have seated at your right hand we proclaim the work of your love until he comes again and we offer you the bread of life and the chalice of blessing look with favor on the oblation of your church in which we show forth the paschal sacrifice of christ that has been handed down to us and grant that by the power of the spirit of your love we may be counted now and until the day of eternity among the members of your son and whose body and blood we have communion by our partaking of this mystery almighty father give us life through your spirit grant that we may be conformed to the image of your son and confirm us in the bond of communion together with francis our pope and mark our bishop with all other bishops with priests and deacons and with your entire people grant all the faithful of the church looking into the signs of the times by the light of faith may constantly devote themselves to the service of the gospel keep us attentive to the needs of all that sharing their grief and pain their joy and hope we may faithfully bring them the good news of salvation and go forward with them along the way of your kingdom remember our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the peace of your christ and all the dead whose faith you alone have known admit them to rejoice in the light of your face and in the resurrection give them the fullness of life grant also to us when our earthly pilgrimage is done that we may come to an eternal dwelling place and live with you forever dare in communion with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the apostles and martyrs and with all the saints we shall praise and exalt you through jesus christ your son through him with them and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever oh [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to pray our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us
