Sunday Catholic Mass for July 18th with Father Dave

[Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you hello everybody out there thank you for saying i'm going to keep sunday holy or you're saying i want more out of my faith and so i'm going to go to church locally and i'm still going to watch a homily hopefully it's a good one right but for those who are keeping sunday holy at home jesus sees what you do for him and his kingdom you'll be blessed now and in the life to come for the time that we haven't chose to follow the commandments for the times we chose sin and temptation over grace and virtue let's ask the lord for his forgiveness on his day and come back to him lord jesus you are the son of god and son of mary lord have mercy christ jesus you are the center of the holy spirit christ have mercy lord jesus you are the way to the father lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king o god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us for you alone are the holy one you alone of the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father amen let us pray show favor lord to your servants and mercifully increase the gift of your grace that made fervent in hope faith and charity they may be ever watchful in keeping your commands through our lord jesus christ your son lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever a reading from the book of the prophet jeremiah woe to the shepherds who mislead and scatter the flock of my pasture says the lord therefore thus says the lord the god of israel against the shepherds who shepherd my people you have scattered my sheep and driven them away you have not cared for them but i will take care to punish your evil deeds i myself will gather the remnant of my flock from all the lands to which i have driven them and bring them back to their meadow there they shall increase and multiply i will appoint shepherds for them who will shepherd them so that they need no longer fear and tremble and none shall be missing says the lord behold the days are coming says the lord when i will raise up a righteous shoot to david as king he shall reign and govern wisely he shall do what is just and right in the land in his days judah shall be saved israel shall dwell in security this is the name they give him the lord our justice the word of the lord thanks be to god the lord is my shepherd there is nothing i shall want the lord is my shepherd there is nothing i shall want the lord is my shepherd i shall not want inverted pastures he gives me repose beside restful waters he leads me he refreshes my soul the lord is my shepherd there is nothing i shall want he guides me in right paths for his name's sake even though i walk in the dark valley i fear no evil for you are at my side with your rod and your staff that give me courage the lord is my shepherd there is nothing i shall want you spread the table before me in the sight of my foes you anoint my head with oil my cup overflows the lord is my shepherd there is nothing i shall want only goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life and i shall dwell in the house of the lord for years to come the lord is my shepherd there is nothing i shall want a reading from the letter of saint paul to the ephesians brothers and sisters in christ jesus you who once were far off have become near by the blood of christ for he is our peace he who made both one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity through his flesh abolishing the law with its commandments and legal claims that he might create in himself one new person in place of the two thus establishing peace and might reconcile both with god in one body through the cross putting that enmity to death by it he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near for through him we both have access in one spirit to the father the word of the lord thanks the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark glory to you o lord the apostles gathered together with jesus and reported all that they had done and taught he said to them come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while people were coming and going in great numbers and they had no opportunity even to eat so they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place people saw them leaving and many came to know about it they hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them when he disembarked and saw the vast crowd his heart was moved with pity for them for they were like sheep without a shepherd he began to teach them many things the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ okay come away by yourself to a deserted place and rest a while doesn't that sound great jesus is saying like hey hakuna matata right he's saying is he opening up a beer and saying hey take a load all fanning you saying that yes or no say no right to a degree yeah like the apostles are working really hard and they're casting out demons and and performing miracles they're curing the sick and they're come back and they're all reporting on all that they happened and they're telling him also about the places didn't want to hear the good news right he's they're telling them all that so on one level of course jesus is kind of saying oh you got to rest but he doesn't say all right go go guys go take a break go to the break room he doesn't say go away and take a break and rest go back to your towns and your families and go rest what does he say he doesn't say go he says come that's interesting come where we'll come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while and then he gets in the boat with them or rather they get in the boat with him he's asking them to come to him like on one level why is he doing that well because they're tired father day well not just that something else is happening before something else is happening is there casting out evil isn't it real important to get rid of demons yes is it important to do miraculous cures of people who are sick with cancer diabetes leprosy you know people uh who are deaf and blind shouldn't we be able to miracularly cure them why would you just put a pause on that that's doing good well if you do good but you don't do it with jesus or the way he would want you could very quickly do wrong what do you mean father dave all right so do you at home this is a yes or no question do you have the ability i'm not saying you would do you have the ability to steal yes or no i don't mean like steal base and kickball right kickball is great or you know baseball but do you have the ability to like go into a food store and or a furniture store or a tv store or i don't know electronic store do you have the ability to steal can you steal your neighbor's lawnmower or their mailbox yes or no could you steal their cat their barbecue do you steal yes or no all right that's that's a different question you have the ability to steal but do you steal no would you steal yes or no you go to the diner we have lots of diners in jersey and they have sweet and low there at the diner before you leave do you take a bunch of sweet and low and put them in your pocket some of you do right well father day they put it out there for us what if you go to the garden with adam and eve what was eve sin what did she do wrong she took the apple she sinned what was adam's sin he went along with it right she sinned she invites him to sin and he doesn't say no now what could he have done different he could have went to god and said hey god uh yeah this uh this woman that you put here with me she's beautiful she's great um she broke one of your commandments in fact you broke like the third commandment you gave us right be fruitful multiply or i'm going to get my order wrong right now but so what do we do and what would god have said we know what god would have said god would have said come on adam let's forgive her and start again together that's what that that's what would happen he said you know what i want to make you guys apple pie don't worry about it we're going to forgive her and begin again but adam doesn't go to god adam goes along with the sin if you see a bunch of people stealing for example south africa right now we have a lot of viewers all over the world and i love when people check in they check in hi father dave you know in the comments though like type down below hey father dave you know we're watching you from delaware hey father dave we're watching from you know uh from wisconsin and we're actually viking fans it's like yeah we need more viking fans in wisconsin right but then people from korea south korea the sudan england you know wales um scotland i mean canada i love when we get canadians to check it's awesome to see people from all over the world and all over the states check in and we have people from south africa last year was like holy moly and you guys watch god bless you guys for watching we're praying for them down there because the coronavirus cases are spiking it's the winter time there's some a lot of unrest but particularly right now also what's happening there people are rioting and looting and burning buildings and malls it's very much like what happened here in the states when we had like peaceful protests last year from communist organizat peaceful protests are fine but when it turns into looting well that's where we're going to go right now let's take a look at that if everyone on your block is running to steal from a store do you go with them yes or no but everybody's doing it why won't you steal what's your answer well father david's wrong well how do you know it's wrong my conscience tells me it's wrong why does your conscience tell you it's wrong well because jesus says it's wrong thou shall not steal because jesus says do unto others what you want done unto you and i don't want to steal from someone because i don't want someone to steal from me because jesus says what you do to the least so who you robbed from you're robbing from jesus imagine jesus is there in the manger right and the wise men show up and they put their treasures there and then you steal jesus's treasures you steal his baby bottle you steal his swaddling clothes are you gonna do that everybody who steals is stealing from christ so when i saw uh online all these you know the looting that's going on i have to ask are those people christians well father dave they're being told people are telling them you have a right to this you know you've been you know kept down what i don't know i don't know i'm not there well we're this is a time for me to get mine to get good for my family i'm going to go and get what i can i'm going to carry out a tv because what we need is more media whatever you do good for your family by robbing someone else oh we've been robbed from so wrong you're gonna do another wrong because the wrong was done to you just like adam or wrong was done to him and now he's gonna do another wrong i think when i think of all that i think you know what those people who are looting and stealing and putting pressure on other people to do that they must not be christians or they don't listen to jesus's words when he says come because if you come to jesus what is he going to say he's going to say do to others what you want done to you he's going to say love god love your neighbor when you come to jesus right jesus gave the apostles power to cast out evil and cure of the sick do you think jesus if you spend time with him is going to tell you to rob from someone jesus is not robin hood right i don't know what people in england like about robin hood or not i don't know i'm sure they'll tell me in the comments below like robin hood stole jesus jesus doesn't steal and if you follow him well then you follow him now let's give you another situation imagine you're in a concentration camp in the holocaust right you're starving and you see this old guy who's going to be dying like say later that day and he has his little ration of crumbs of bread a little heal the bread he's gonna be dying do you steal his bread what about the guards will you steal the bread from the guards people did this they're so desperately hungry that they would steal from each other if you're a christian in a concentration camp will you steal bread from someone else to feed your family who's there with you maybe yes or no right i love the movie i love the uh musical les miserables back before i was a priest and i was dating i saw it four times on broadway with different girlfriends that was like my thing hey we go out let's go see les miserables i really like les miserables it was great it's a great musical would you steal oh father dave that's a tough question you know there was a saint there's a woman who was an atheist edith stein and she read the life the autobiography of saint teresa of avila and she through reading that story while she was house-sitting for a friend came to faith she became a carmelite herself and you we know her in the catholic church celebrate her saint teresa benedicta and she was locked up and she went um i think she was in dachau of the concentration camp there and she didn't steal food from others she gave her food to others and she died there because the christian response would be well look i'm going to follow jesus's commandments and try to love even in this terrible place i'm going to try to love my neighbors and what will happen well god will either multiply loaves inspire someone to give me their food or i will die and he will raise me up a saint which is exactly what he did say maximilian colby too the point of this gospel today and bringing it back to us right is jesus wants time with his followers he wants you and me to come to him and when you and i come to him well then he gives us his teaching he gives us his strength and he gives you direction he also gives you peace right because this you know what jesus says like this is related to this other passage he says where he says all you who are labor and burden come to me and i'll give you rest when you're exhausted how many of you when you're tired from coming home from work and a terrible commute and all that you want to come home from work and and how many of you the first thing you want to do is to like come in your house and read the bible raise your hand how many of you when you come home you're dog tired and your dog's meeting you and jumping on your maybe your wife your husband comes home right there with you two and they give you a kiss the kids are like or you're like suddenly the kids are not your husbands or wives anymore your wife or husband is like do you know what your son did or what your daughter did like they're not theirs anymore because they did something wrong whatever and you're met with all that craziness after your own craziness and you haven't depressurized and whatever how many of you at that moment say you know i want to pray the rosary when jesus says come to me you who are who labor and find life burdensome and i will give you rest he doesn't literally mean that when you're super strapped exhausted and living on you know uh energy drinks and coffee that the thing that's gonna make you get rest is going to be reading the bible and praying more sometimes you're too tired to pray and i ain't giving you a pass to not pray but sometimes you are and maybe then you your act of faith says i need to stop working so much well if i do that father how can i pay the bills well the jews did that they took one day off a week to trust that god will provide for them and he did right so let's go back so what does he mean when he says come to me and i'll give you rest what he means is a different kind of peace it means it two ways first way let's say you rob from others or everybody's looting you're gonna go loot two you know what that means let me tell you what happens to someone who loots it's someone who loots they have they've acquired the stuff they have through stealing from someone else so you know what happened in their mind this little worm hey wait a minute my neighbors around me may come to rob me i said it's okay to take what's not mine so that means someone stronger than me could come and take what i what i got maybe someone comes to your house hey man were you in the looting yeah it was great what'd you get i got this hey give me what you got they got a gun and be very careful right if somebody says because they set up a principle you can take what's not yours well then someone can take what you have but if you're a christian you don't think like that and if you associate with fellow christians well then you know they're not going to rob you because they follow jesus's teaching and they spend time with him and he tells them what he wishes them to do and so you have you don't have to worry about com someone coming and stealing your stuff because you wouldn't steal anybody's stuff this is why it's good to have good christian friends around you right people who think like jesus things who think like you think and often like it's true for emotions and relationships too right you know when someone says oh you know i think we have to go separate ways because i don't have feelings for you anymore and that happens does jesus say you should move by feelings yes or no say no right he doesn't because then if you go with someone else who you suddenly have feelings for what happens when that person doesn't have feelings for you you you've just established it's okay for them to walk away from you right do kids in school like have feelings to take their exams yes or no do they still take their exams right yes so when jesus is saying that he'll give you peace and rest what he means is a real internal peace and rest from the unrest that'll happen if you start to go the way of the outside world does jesus let you lie yes or no no right oh father dave sometimes you gotta lie you gotta tell a small like i'm working on this rap song and maybe i'll i'll get it done next month i don't know i want to shoot like a cool video and it's about telling the truth and every tell the truth always right don't tell little lies the book of revelation says you know people in heaven they always tell the truth there's no lies told in heaven right and so i got like a little catch you rap going about like uh this old this old time truck or el camino i like those cars uh i will never steal one of those cars but there are two cool cars and and well you'll have to wait and see but telling the truth is it permittable to lie to bring about a good yes or no say no right if you're hiding if you're a christian you're hiding jews in your house and the nazis come to your door and they say like father they say if i was catholic priest i would get locked up but if they said father dave do you have any jews here i don't have to tell them the answer but i shouldn't lie and so i could say it's just it's been me and my dog for years is that a lie that is not a lie did i tell them i'm hiding you jewish men and women in the basement no and many christians did that very thing to keep people safe which is a good thing right well father is it permittable i'm not saying this actually happened is it permittable to lie about a country and let's say an election uh to to like remove someone you don't like in power you know for a greater good i'm not saying that happened i'm saying hypothetically in the history of the world that may have happened is that permitable we're going to tell a lie to do a greater good that's exactly what plato writes about in his republic for those who took philosophy as a philosophy major plato says you got to have the noble lie wrong nobody lies in heaven and if you spend time with jesus he doesn't let you lie he doesn't let you steal he lets you know that you should do what's good for others because he's doing good for you and he wants time with you and that's the second part of this the people who are doing wrong need more time with christ and he longs for that time he says he says you know master where you think he says come and you will see he says the father and i stand at your door and knock if anyone opens up we'll come and eat with you right he doesn't what are you going to do with heaven you're not going to be looting you're not going to be lying you're not going to be stealing okay you know those things what are you going to be doing you're going to be spending time with god well singing out of lucas i'm sure that's part of it but he wants to be your friend he wants to enter into your life literally he's riding the boat with the apostles like if you're driving to work are you listening to a podcast you're listening to the radio grumbling complaining you can shut that off and talk with jesus what do i talk to him about talk about anything like friends how do you become a friend with someone like two little kids you know hi my name is dave my name is dave too then let's be friends that's how kids think right you're like hey i like the vikings i like the vikings too all right we'll be friends and you start talking about the vikings it doesn't have to be that you could say hey i just met you hey i don't like the packers i don't like the packers either all right awesome then let's start talking about how much we don't like the packers father david's not the vikings the packers okay you could say hey i don't like the lions i don't like the lions either hey let's get together and talk about how we don't like the lions father dave that's crazy okay well then you can hear another one i don't like the chicago bears i don't like the chicago bears either hey all right let's be friends on how we don't like the chicago bears look at all those examples father dave i don't watch them great you could say i don't watch the i don't watch the packers either do you like tea do you like coffee you can start a friendship with anyone over the smallest things and what does jesus say a sparrow can't fall in the wood without the father knowing it the smallest things of your life are important to him because you're important to him you know and if nature teaches us about god and just for those of us who have dogs or cats right you know your dog wants to spend time with you but god wants time with you and he knows that if more people give him time and talk to him about just sharing your life with him talk to him straight if more people give him time then his goodness gets in them and the badness and the darkness of the world retreat because he's the light of the world and he'll put that in you you talk to god about sports you can talk to him about your back pain you're talking about father dave who's maybe preaching too long i got a clock over there so i'll be wrapping this up and you could talk to him about the people you see doing wrong and listen to what he says to you he longs for time with you if you give him time that's time well spent do you think in heaven do you think at the before heaven before you get to heaven do you think anybody who dies regrets a single moment they gave to jesus before they died do you think the world regrets that people haven't spent time with christ are you going to give him time this week i think it's about time i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen let's raise our prayers to almighty god for the church may the holy spirit continue to fill her with the fruit of righteousness that comes through jesus christ let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all who hold authority in government or civic institutions and for those who enact policies let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those who suffer for expressing or sharing their faith may god relieve them of all persecution and give them strength in their trials let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those of us gathered here may we be blessed by the holy spirit who calls us to deeper conversion and commitment to each other let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those who have died may they bask in the eternal sunshine of god's glory let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the end to coronavirus let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer and now for those petitions we hold in the silence of our hearts let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for the people of england and south africa and india who are suffering from rises in the coronavirus may they be kept safe and healed of their sickness we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray also for the people who are stealing and looting and rioting particularly looting in south africa if they're christians may they remember the vows they made in their baptism may they return what they have stolen freely may they repent may they rebuild and apologize and come back to jesus we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for people who may be inciting people and whispering lies that they're privileged to steal from people and to destroy property and they have a right to take what belongs to someone else people who are encouraging others to break jesus's commandments repent come back to his teaching now before they suffer later we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for the people particularly also suffering in cuba people who are suffering under a communist government that is harming lives may they be healed of the coronavirus may they be fed through the work of good christians may their freedom and individuality be respected as individual children of god men and women that he created we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer almighty father turn toward us as we turn to you and ask your help we ask these things through christ our [Music] lord [Music] so so pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours would be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and the glory of his name for our good and good of all his holy church oh god who in the one perfect sacrifice brought to completion varied offerings of the law except we pray this sacrifice from your faithful servants and make it holy as you bless the gifts of abel so that when each has offered to the honor of your majesty may benefit the salvation of all through christ our lord amen the lord be with you lift up your hearts give them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks father most holy through your beloved son jesus christ your word through whom you made all things whom you sent as our savior and redeemer incarnated by the holy spirit and born of the virgin fulfilling your will and gaining for you a holy people he stretched out his hands as he endured his passion so as to break the bonds of death and manifest the resurrection and so with angels and all the saints we declare your glories with one voice we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest and the word hosanna means save us we're asking god to save us in the best way possible which he does through coming himself and offering his body and blood you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ you may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and david our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray with the blessed virgin mary mother of god a blessed joseph her spouse the blessed apostles saint martha saint francis and all the saints will please you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever amen at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trust pass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not in our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always let's offer each other the sign of peace lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world grant us peace behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed tastes [Music] the lord [Music] the lord of the lord i will bless the lord at all times shall always be on my leaves my soul shall glory in the lord for god has been so good to me and see taste and see the goodness [Music] taste and see the goodness [Music] let us pray graciously be present to your people we pray o lord and lead those you have imbued with heavenly mysteries to pass from former ways to newness of life through christ our lord now we have a brief announcement from uh wet hair father dave about masses coming up in august back up a bit my parents gave money to the missions in alaska and they read us these awesome stories of these priests up there and these priests like they would arrive in some town where there's been no priest for you know for months and they would like get off the boat go to the church turn it out you know turn on the boiler and get things going let people know there's a priest there and they would say mass need confessions have baptisms weddings and then they would get they'd leave get in the boat and go to the next like logantown and they flew planes airplanes which was awesome as a little boy to imagine like a priest flying planes and they had snow shoes and i love snow here in jersey we used to have really good winters and they'd have snow shoes and they'd say mass on a radio at k-nome and nomalaska and like it was awesome and as a kid with an imagination who wanted to be a jedi knight like to think about priests who were flying planes i'm like that's a jedi right this is before star wars went crazy and and and disney put politics in star wars this is when star wars was good okay so as a kid i thought man i i don't know that i'll be a priest but i would like to be a priest maybe one day and this is before i found the wonderful world of women let's just say that but um because that like put a pause on things for a time but i thought wouldn't be cool to be a priest in alaska and i'd go up to church to the church up the road and i'd see these like bent gray old guys that were boring bad i'm just like they're not as cool as those alaskan guys and i always thought if i ever became a priest i would love to be a priest in alaska fast forward to like after college and working and dating and relationships and all of that whoa let me back up a bit so i'm reading i i was working in the the world and i worked in the movie theater business um and i was coming between one of four theaters that i oversaw and i stopped in adoration i started reading a book many of you know the story the book is a dangerous book i don't ever read don't ever read it never read this book ever parents don't let your kids read it it was the autobiography of saint therese of lesu it's called the story of a soul she wrote it don't read it don't rate it why not i don't know why i read it i like fantasy stories i like science fiction stories but i went to the library one day and i was like oh let me read this and i just like it was in thomas river so as you know thompson new jersey had an apartment near there and i went to the library i took out this book and kind of heard god knocking on my heart and i started to fall in love with jesus in a way i didn't think possible and i remember like um telling my girlfriend at the time hey i really think god's calling me to be a priest and she started crying she started balling she said i knew what i knew you were going to be a priest and i'm like you could have told me about it right so a real dangerous book right so i was i heard god calling me to like give up dating and my career and changed my life like he's like you work pretty hard they've come work for me so i remember i had in my hands two pieces of paper green pieces of paper i had in my left hand the information for the diocese of fairbanks alaska and in my right hand i had the information the diocese of trenton new jersey where i'm from i'm not from trenton i'm from lakewood in jersey i said well you know i better start with what i know first jersey but if they say no i'll try alaska so i call up the vocation director in jersey and he's like come on down we'd love to have you and so we talk and i go to seminary and i obviously didn't become a priest for alaska but i can't shake the thought i'm in the seminary and i'm going year by year and just going to seminar doesn't mean you'll be a priest but the more you the more you go the closer you get the more the resolve happens and the call happens so i'm growing in the seminary i just can't shake the thought of being a priest in alaska i get my first assignment in middletown and we have a priest from ireland uh and a priest from the philippines manila hello to you guys in ireland hello to you guys in manila and the priest from ireland goes back to ireland for four weeks the priest from manila goes back to the philippines for four weeks and i'm thinking like you know we're like the united nations there in the rectory and i'm like well what am i gonna do i said you know maybe i'll take my vacation and volunteer it up there in alaska if they'll have me and a priest friend of mine was like you're crazy you're tired because you're doing priestly work and you're gonna go and use your vacation to work as a priest that doesn't make any sense it doesn't make sense but common sense never climbed the mountain common sense doesn't write songs common sense doesn't fall in love common sense doesn't doesn't come to bethlehem and lie in a manger common sense doesn't say god seeks us common sense says we just go after god luckily there's a lot more than common sense in the heart of almighty god so i asked my bishop and my bishop thinks it was amazing idea so he calls a friend of his bishop up there and my brother joe bought a house in bricktown and he's i'm helping him move like apparently what you do as preachers you help lots of people move i've helped lots of people move don't ask me to help you move i'm not as strong as i used to be i'm helping a move i'm getting in this u-haul and my phone rings it was like this old old cell phone we're going back like almost 13 years now um and my phone rings and i'm like what do you want and the guy on the other side goes hello i'm like yeah what do you want he goes is this david yeah it's david he goes this is bishop edward burns of the diocese of judo alaska i'm like oh my gosh you know your eminence or it's uh your excellency is actually the title uh i think i call them remnants um which is better than saying you're immense right like hands down it's better to say some of your eminence than your immense right what is that about there's a way to address the hierarchy in the church right okay so he's like you know are you healthy yes do you like to hike yes he says i have a place for you come up to skagway alaska so from reading the autobiography of saint therese to getting ordained to be a priest to having my first vacation time come up and now he tells me to go to this little town called sky grad no idea where skagway is so i get on the internet and i figure out okay how do i get there i have to take a bunch of planes uh and uh puddle jumpers i've never been on before and it was really cool and i get to this little town and i get off the plane at the airport and it's a super tiny airport man super tiny i love it now but there's nobody there and i'm like huh okay so i go outside and i stick my thumb out and i hitch a ride to the catholic church which i've never been at before i don't even know the name of it i just know i'm going to the catholic church in skagway alaska um i would come to learn a lot more about it i'm smiling now because like now i walk it like it's so close you can walk it every year i go there i walk but at the time i didn't even know where it was right i didn't know how big the town was or anything so i hit you into town i get dropped off at the church and the car pulls away in the name of the church saint therese and every year i go up there and there was nobody there the church was completely like the old priest who would go up there in the ancient days uh the missionary priests there was nobody there the church was all closed and i would have to you know turn everything on and you know meet the parishioners which are awesome and i come to love them here at st martha's i have 4 thousand families up there i have 17. i love them in fact if and some of you know if you're watching this right if you don't come to church what do i do i literally walk to your house i knock on the door time to go to church because i didn't see you at the earlier mass so i know you didn't come so come on right it's a good time but but god called me to go there and he calls me still and up there him and i like the apostles he says come away to a deserted place and rest a while and that's not simply sleeping that's actually spending time with christ and so it's a real special time for me every summer i work as a priest up there we say mass and confessions and meet with people but i have a real i treat the thing the three to four weeks every year like a real retreat a real special time with me and our lord now why am i telling you guys this because god who calls me to come to him every august in alaska also that call comes to you a thousand times a day and me a thousand times a day where he's longing for time with you or father dave we heard that in the humbling already yeah um you got to say yes to that now i don't know if i'll be able to film any masses in august while i'm up there i don't think i'm going to my first response is to listen to jesus says come away so it's my plan right now in jersey now maybe god will say something different to me when i'm up there and will surprise you with a mass but right now my plan is for the month of august we're not going to have any of these internet masses it's a lot of work for us to do them here we were trying to get frankly like uh we tape we were taping we're trying to tape the masses for august ahead of time here and the one day we were trying to do it i had the morning mass i had a funeral mass we did this mass for the weekend and then we had to do a fourth mass so one after the other it was like a treadmill and it's like lord this is not this is not what you want us to do as well as like for preaching to you guys i try to give you a homily that's relevant i don't know what's going to happen in the world in august so to try to put something like in the can for you guys i don't know that that works so jesus is asking me to come to him and i'm saying yes i have to you have to too and it's better for you and for your family that you say yes to that it's better for me and my priesthood that i say yes to jesus when he says come on father dave i want time with you so that's what i'm doing will we give you these masses right now my answer is going to be no there'll be no masses on this channel for you guys in august from us but what's cool is you guys can go to mass in rome you can go to mass in peru you can go to mass in you know wisconsin and see like packer fans convert and become viking fans like with the internet for those of you who are at home you can find masses all over the world your local parish we will return in september my plan is to certainly keep these masses going through christmas we'll see where we are at christmas time if we'll keep doing them after it is a lot of work to do it um so in september we'll pick the masses back up and we'll go all the way through christmas the birth of our savior um and we'll see if at that time we keep going forward but right now the announcement is there's going to be no masses here in august next week will be our last mass and then because the week after that will be the end of the month and beginning of august and so then i got to listen to god's call to come away with him thank you father dave uh so in heaven saint francis was having trouble with one of the the little uh badgers wouldn't go into its den and so we decided to talk to god about it because francis is really great with all the animals but this badger would stay out all night he would badger the neighbors and he wouldn't go to his his den and so god's talking to or so saint francis is talking to god he tells god the problem because we should always tell god our problems and what does god say god says well i know a guy i know a guy you'll get it later the lord be with you may almighty god bless you the father and the son and the holy spirit go in peace thanks be to god you
