kingdom of god [Music] in the name of the father the son and the holy spirit amen the grace and peace of god our father the love of the lord jesus christ and the fellowship of the holy spirit be with all of you my brothers and sisters is on the sixth sunday of ordinary time we come before the lord once again and today we hear in the gospel it sounds like the the sermon on the mount but it's really taking place on the plane so they commonly call the sermon on the plane which is very much like the sermon on the mount anyway it talks about people being blessed but a lot of people being blessed that are struggling that you would think be anything but blessed so it's it's our call to be a blessing to people and for the times we have failed to do that we ask god's mercy and strength lord jesus you came to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy lord have mercy christ jesus you came to bring salvation to sinners christ have mercy christ have mercy lord jesus you mercy for us at the right hand of the father lord have mercy lord have mercy and may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us all to everlasting life amen and now let us give glory to glory god god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will glory to god in the highest [Music] we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your holy glory lord god heavenly king oh god almighty father glory to god in the highest and honored peace to people of good will lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of goodwill for you alone are the holy one you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father [Music] glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will let us pray o god who teach us that you abide in hearts that are just and true grant that we may be so fashioned by your grace as to become a dwelling pleasing to you through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen and let us be attentive to god's word a reading from the book of the prophet jeremiah thus says the lord curse is the one who trusts in human beings who seeks his strength in flesh whose heart turns away from the lord he is like a barren bush in the desert that enjoys no change of season but stands in the lava waste assault and empty earth blessed is the one who trusts in the lord whose hope is the lord he is like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream it fears not the heat when it comes its leaves stay green in the year of drought it shows no distress but still bears fruit the word of the lord thanks be to god blessed are they who hope in the lord [Music] blessed the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked nor walks in the way of sinners nor sits in the company of the insolent but delights in the law of the lord and meditates on his law day and night blessed are they who hope in the lord [Music] he is like a tree planted near running water that yields his fruit in new season and who leaves never fade whatever he does prospers blessed are they who hope in the lord [Music] not so the wicked not so there like chaff with the wind drives away for the lord watches over the way of the trust but the way of the wicked vanishes blessed a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters if christ is preached as raised from the dead how can some among you say there is no resurrection of the dead if the dead are not raised neither has christ been raised and if christ has not been raised your faith is vain you are still in your sins then those who have fallen asleep in christ have perished if for this life only we have hoped in christ we are the most pitiable people of all but now christ has been raised from the dead the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] oh [Music] i am your servant lord speak to me [Music] oh [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit read from the holy gospel of angel luke glory to you o lord jesus came down with the twelve and stood on a stretch of level ground with a great crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people from all judea and jerusalem and the coastal region of tyre and psycho and raising his eyes toward his disciples he said blessed are you who are poor for the kingdom of god is yours blessed are you who are now hungry for you will be satisfied blessed are you who are now weeping for you will laugh blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude and insult you and announce your name as evil on account of the son of man rejoice and leap for joy on that day behold your reward will be great in heaven for their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way but what do you who are rich for you have received your consolation woe to you who are filled now for you will be hungry woe to you who laughs now for you will grieve and lead woe to you when i'll speak all of you for their ancestors treated the false prophets in this way the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ so my brothers and sisters i have a lot of fond memories of against the not so fond memories of my childhood but the fond memories one of them came to mind recently uh when i read the gospel we made many trips between elm grove wheeling up to my grandma o'connor's house in wellsburg we would travel the ohio river along route 2 there and on the way my dad loved to sing songs songs that he liked and he insisted that my brothers and i try to learn the words and sing along with them one particular song that came to mind when i was reading this gospel may seem strange really but it just jumped out at me it was a song called side by side and it goes like this oh we ain't got a barrel of money maybe we're ragged and funny but we'll travel along singing our songs side by side don't know what's coming tomorrow maybe it's trouble and sorrow but we'll travel the road sharing our load side by side through all kinds of weather what if the sky might fall as long as we're together it doesn't really matter at all when they've all had their quarrels imparted we'll be the same as we started we'll travel along singing our song psy just remembering that song brings back a memory of just feeling good in that time to me the song speaks to maybe something in all of us appeal to all of us it's like okay yes we may not have money we may not have this we may have gone through bad bad situations maybe we've suffered losses but the bottom line is through all of all that we have each other side by side and that certainly can apply to all kinds of relationships uh especially husbands and wives we think of that sisters and brothers i think of that with my brothers so today's gospel is from luke this is luke's version of what we call the beatitudes what we're most familiar with is matthew's version of the beatitudes we call sermon on the mount in luke's version jesus comes down from the mountain and he starts sharing the beatitudes preaching so we could call it the sermon on the plane but basically the message is this that you who are poor you are blessed and you who suffer loss you are blessed and you who go through all kinds of turmoil and struggles and whatnot know that you're blessed luke adds four woes to all of that but anyway with that in mind i think for me today that's the message that i want to convey that life has its ups and downs we god knows we know that right and we can't avoid them but do we only feel blessed when everything is great when we are successful when we don't suffer loss the real struggle with our faith is to know and believe jesus's words which are being written 40 years after jesus suffered and died and rose from the dead so the gospel writers all of them are writing no earlier than 40 years after that and they're writing to communities that have suffered all these things and so they're sharing stories it's like tell me a story that has to do with my my situation so they picked this story they picked a story about the beatitudes to encourage the people who have already gone through all this who are still suffering and maybe even still being persecuted so we uh i think with faith you know i have faith that in the end through it all i will be side by side with god i will experience that that bliss if you will that knowing and being known not only that when i die but even now it is there even though sometimes i have to ratch up my faith and believe it's there but i know as i'm standing here that i have been blessed and i know that you have been too god bless you [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] so so [Music] and now let us together make our profession of faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen [Music] let us place our trust in the lord who is eager to give us what we ask in these prayers that the church will know god's blessing in preaching the gospel of the risen christ let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that the united nations and international organizations will know god's and so it is right that all your creatures serve you all the redeemed praise you and all your saints with one heart bless you therefore we too extol you with all the angels in joyful celebration as we acclaim [Music] heaven and earth are full full of your glory [Music] blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord [Music] oh [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] is your death [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you and humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and mark our bishop and all who love and serve your people remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face and have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god her husband joseph with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] mmm [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to pray our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil and graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your
