- Does Coke really taste
better from the tap? - Let's talk about that. (upbeat music) Good Mythical Morning. - There are three kinds
of people in the world. Bottle lovers, can huggers, and soda fountain tap people. - Very catchy. - Now, if you had all three before you and refills were not a factor,
which one would you choose? Which one would you choose? - If it was a glass bottle,
glass bottle all day, everyday. - Okay, okay. I might be a glass bottle,
man, but I don't know. I'm really drawn to the soda fountain tap. I think it's something to do with- - A lot of people are. - Like, the syrup ratio
is a little bit better. I don't know, I'm not a soda scientist. - It's my wife's favorite. But listen, we're going to find out which one is actually the best, because we're gonna taste
them all side by side. It's time for Which Soda Pop styles Have
That Bomb Carbonation? Either Way, When We're Done,
We'll Have Long Urinations. - We're gonna be tasting sodas that come from different soda vessels, cans, plastic bottles, the tap, or what we call the fountain. - Yeah.
- In the South, we don't call it the tap, but- - Unless it's beer. - You know what we're talking about. And we're gonna also try a
few glass bottles in the mix, and then we're gonna be working together to guess which one is which, and then also individually
choosing our favorites by round. Each soda vessel guessed
correctly counts as one point, and if we get more than
half of these right by the end of the game, we're gonna win our very
own case of Topo Chico. - A case of Topo Chico?
- A case. - How many Topo Chicos is that?
- The most fizziest water known to man.
- Almost too fizzy. Okay, and we're using
freshly purchased tap sodas from McDonald's, because
according to Business Insider, they state McDonald's has
their beverage products shipped in stainless steel containers
instead of plastic bags, which better preserves the
ingredients and flavor. Also, McDonald's claims to have
a superior filtration system in their taps, and they
pre-chill the syrup before it enters the fountain. Very scientific, very safe. Safe, also very safe. I was gonna say fancy,
but very safe as well. - It's safe. It's safe. - Don't worry, it's safe.
- Boiled for safety. But is fancy and safe tastiest? Let's find out. (jazzy music) We begin with the oldest
major soft drink manufacturer in the country, and Dr. Pepper. Dr. Pepper says it's a
signature blend of 23 flavors. I don't like any of 'em,
but that's not the game. The game is- - You might like one of the 23. - Can we decide which is which? - Maybe it's the way the 23 come together that you don't like. Now we got these-
- It's a little weak. - We got, here's the thing. Here's the thing about fountain. Let me just say this, okay? - Yeah. - The reason I don't
particularly like fountain is I think that it is too inconsistent. Like, I think that they got to have like the machine calibrated right, and sometimes they don't. - If it gets dirty or
something like, yeah. - I'm not, I don't know
if it's gonna get dirty. - I think the quality control. And plus- - And you gotta drink
it almost immediately. I mean, we literally just got
these like 20 minutes ago, but still, I don't know. - Did you think it tastes good? Or it's a little tepid. - I want more, you know? I want, what I'm saying
is I want something else. - But you're thinking it's the tap. - Yeah. That's the bottle. - It's got more bite to it, I mean. - That's a plastic bottle. - You know, maybe we're
cheating a little bit by taking into account the freshness, or the lack thereof. You think this is bottle, could be. I need to taste the third
one to decide between. - And that's a can. I don't know what, I'm
probably completely wrong. - Well, hold on. - But just something about it, it just immediately
was like, that's a can. - I really can't tell the difference. - I feel like I can taste the can. - My assumption, because
there's no glass bottle here, is that the can is gonna have the most
carbonation the longest. I can tell it's dancing up there the most. - I think we stick with it. - Okay.
- You feel good about this? - Yeah, we are locked in. Are we correct? - [Stevie] Are you going
to say what your preferred- - Oh, you want us to say
which one's our favorite? - [Stevie] Yeah. - I actually liked the can
the best in this situation. - [Link] Yeah. - 'Cause that's also a plastic bottle. - [Stevie] You guys, I don't
know if this is an indicator of how the rest of this game's gonna go but you got every single one right. - Yeah. - Okay, and-
- I tasted the can, I'm telling you. - But neither one of us
said can is our favorite. - What I was saying was glass bottle when I said I liked the bottle the best. The second for me is a can, and then comes plastic bottle
and then comes fountain. - Oh. - So, this is consistent, I think. (jazzy music) All right, now for the soda
that sparked the entire debate, we've got Coke. - And we got glass bottle in the mix. - Yeah, we got four things, can, tap, plastic bottle, and glass bottle. Start with A. Can. - But why do you say that? - I can taste the can, man. You taste a little, you taste
a little bit of aluminum. Don't you taste that? - I think this is plastic bottle. - [Rhett] I tasted a can
in the first challenge. - We're gonna put it
right here in the middle, 'cause we don't know yet. - Okay. - Okay, for B. - Glass bottle. - Is it sweeter? - It just tastes like
Mama Nell's house, man. Mama Nell gave me the
Coke in the glass bottle. - Yeah, it's a little
fizzier, but there's like- - You can taste the glass. - [Link] There's an airier. - It's in the glass forever. - I feel strongly this is glass bottle, so we are in strong agreement. - Now, this one actually looks lighter. - Oh, it does? - You probably can't see this on camera, but it looks lighter,
which I'm just gonna say this is fountain before I taste it, just based on the fact
that it looks lighter. - I don't feel like any- - I feel like I can taste-
- The ratio. - The fact that it was mixed. You know, they did,
just in the recent past, it was mixed together, and
I just don't think that, I think that they need
to make it at the plant and give it to you in full. - They can't, that's
not how it works, man. - Plastic bottle. I just-
- Oh no, no. Hold on now. - Does that not taste like
plastic bottle to you? - Go, go back to A. - I'm confused now. I just, I have to, I have to
go with my first instinct. - I agree with you. A is plastic bottle, and what we're just
drinking now, D is can, which was your original instinct. - Nope, mine was the complete opposite, but I thought A was can and D was plastic bottle
and B was glass bottle. - I don't know anymore. All right, I'll switch it up. All right, because I
think they taste the same. - [Stevie] You have to pick
the one that you like the best. - Oh, oh, oh, oh. Glass bottle, which was B. - Now, see, are you saying you think you liked the
glass bottle the better, or you like the taste of that one? - I like the taste of it, and I think it's glass bottle. - Were we right? - [Stevie] Okay, apparently
round one was not an indicator of how the rest of this game was gonna go. - Dang it! - [Stevie] Okay, A is plastic bottle, which you said was can.
- So you were right. You were right. - That's what I was saying. - [Stevie] B is the can, which you said was the glass bottle. - Oh, we liked the can the best. - Again.
- You liked the can the best. C is the tap, which you were right about, 'cause you said it was mixed. - So we were only right about the tap. - [Stevie] And then D, which
you said is the plastic bottle, is actually the glass bottle.
- The glass bottle? - [Stevie] Yeah, so D is
the one that, in your mind, you thought you liked, but you
actually picked the can one. - You know, cans get colder quicker, too. We're can men. - I was tasting all kinds of
things that I wasn't tasting, but what we know is that, two times in a row, we
like canned the best. - I think we've said that. - We're can men. (jazzy music) - Really quick, I want to remind you about the Mythical Kitchen channel, where you can find deluxe
food internet-tainment and proper garlic
palm-heel strike procedure, so go over there and subscribe. You can also listen to the latest "A Hot Dog is a Sandwich" podcast to hear Josh and Nicole's
culinary hot takes, available wherever you get your podcasts. - All right, I know what you're thinking. Why has orange Fanta entered the chat? Well, oddly enough, Fanta
is on many major taps, because it's owned by Coca-Cola. - Right. - And the commercials are pretty good. - Right, yeah.
- You wanna do the Fanta? - I do want to do the Fanta. - Let's do it. - They're pushing that Fanta. That's refreshing. Don't you feel like you can taste the syrup?
- Sunkist, what? - I feel like I can taste the syrup and the carbonation separately, again, like it just happened in a tap. - Well, see, now that
you're telling me that, that's all I can think about. So, I'm agreeing with you,
tap, right there off the bat. Tap that Fanta. B? - It's got more bite to it. - It doesn't taste as good. I like this Fanta better. - This is also Fanta. - I like this Fanta better. - The way you keep it, I
like this Fanta better. I don't, I like B better. - This almost tastes
like Diet Fanta to me. It's like, it's dramatically
different than that one. - Really? - [Link] And I'm just gonna say it's a plastic bottle for now. What's your guess? - It's either a plastic bottle
or a can, but I can't tell. - Okay, and finally. - Hmm, I actually like this one the best. - See, if you liked that one
the best and you're a can man, then that tells me that C is a can. - I don't know. Now, this one has more bite to it, and my theory is that the
cans have the most bite. - Something about this
ratio, the fountain tap, which we believe we agree on, makes this one, my favorite. I mean, yeah, it's not quite as- - It tastes like Gatorade to me. - It's not quite as fizzy,
but it's more orangey. Like the orange becomes the star. In this, it's a bit foreign. So, which one is your favorite? - This one's different. - If C is your favorite, then that's why I'm calling
it the can, because- - I'm gonna say something controversial. C is my favorite, and I am a can man, but I think that it's the plastic bottle, but I don't feel confident
enough in that to switch it, so I think you should probably
just keep it where it is. - We're locked. - [Stevie] Well, man, he
should have switched it. - Dang it! - [Stevie] Cup A is the
tap, so you were right. Cup B is the can, and yeah, it has more of a bite to it, and cup C is the plastic bottle. - So something about Fanta- - But you're a plastic bottle man. Fanta's throwing us both off. - No, but I said B had more bite to it, so I thought it was the
can, but with Fanta, I actually liked a little bit less bite, and it felt like a C was
the perfect drink to me, but it's from a bottle. - Right? - So I guess I'm a bottle and can man. What can I say? (jazzy music) Okay, so anybody who knows us knows that we think all
Sprite is good Sprite, but today we're casting that notion aside. You ready? - Hold on, I gotta sneeze. (Link sneezes) - Oh, gosh.
- Oh, man. Look what I found.
(Rhett laughs) - Ah, don't open it,
that would be cheating. - I sneezed this out of my nose. - It comes from anywhere. You never know what's gonna happen. Okay, let's taste A. - Oh, I spilled it. - I mean, that's good Sprite, but again, it's Sprite.
- It's not great Sprite. - I almost want to say
that's from the fountain, but I don't think that it is. I think it's from a plastic bottle.
- Plastic bottle. Just because- - We're on the same page there. - Something's not right with it. - You think the plastic messed up? - You know, I get most
suspicious of plastic bottles. - Oh, that's totally different and better. - Wow. - Mm-hmm. That's either a can-
- Maybe this is the tap. - That's either a can or a glass bottle. - Maybe, I think the tap is
most likely to be screwed up. - Keep it at tap for now. - And then A is at tap, but
B, what we're tasting now, which is better. - [Rhett] It's either glass bottle or can. - We love it, let's put it at can. - Okay, I just burped a little bit. - We can squish these
around, switch 'em around. - Oh, that, see, that tastes awful. That's fountain. This is what can happen with Sprite. Sometimes they get the ratio wrong. I'm telling you, this has got almost just
straight up carbonated water but very little syrup.
- Yeah, there's no flavor. - Y'all fountain people, I know y'all love your fountain drinks, but I'm telling you right now,
they get it wrong sometimes. - All right, so we're putting
A goes to plastic bottle. We still love B. - We know that C is tap.
- C is crazy different. And then, D? - Ooh, that is nice. - That is good. - Oh, that is so good. - So, B and D are can and glass bottle. It's gotta be. - But which one is which, my friend? (glasses clink) - That did nothing. - D is colder. I think that's the only difference. - Do you think that cans keep
things colder for longer? - Can keep things, get
things colder quicker. - And keep things colder for longer? - I think.
- You think, engineering? - But I don't know. - Physics, thermodynamics? - If they can get colder quicker, then it can probably get warmer
quicker than a glass bottle, but I don't think that's right. - I think we go with that being can, so you're saying that D
is can, B is glass bottle. - And I'm asserting myself as a can man, even though, like, I think
that's the big headline that I'm taking home to my family. You know, I'd go home every
night and I tell my family. - We're a can family now,
just in case you didn't know, 'cause daddy's a can man. - We're can people. - [Stevie] Okay, I'm gonna
lead with the positive here. You are both can men, because D is the can
and you both chose it. - We're can men.
- Can men. - Fanta was an outlier. - Outlier.
- Forget about it. - Yeah. - [Stevie] But let's go through the rest. So, A, which you thought
was the plastic bottle, is actually the glass bottle, so you thought it tasted weird. - We've done that twice, thinking that the plastic
bottle is the glass bottle. What happened to us? Where we dropped? - Glass bottle? - [Stevie] B, that you
thought was the glass bottle, is actually the plastic bottle. - Yeah, okay. But we were right about tap again. - [Stevie] And you were
right about tap, C is tap. - Tap is bad.
- Yep. - Okay, so here's what we discovered. First of all, just, I got to let us know, we got exactly 50% of these right, which means we do not get Topo Chico. - Oh! - Sorry, Link. - But we're can men.
- But it has been confirmed, we're can men, and the fountain drinks aren't any good. Consistently not great. So you, it's all in your head. - Thanks for subscribing
and clicking that bell. - You know what time it is. - Hi, I'm Rob. - I'm Kora. - And we're from... - Southfield, Connecticut. - And it's time to spin the Wheel of Mythicality.
- The wheel of mythic-cat-aly. - Dink.
- And sink. (Rhett and Link laugh) - Love it. - All right, click the
top link to watch us pair sodas with fine cheeses
in Good Mythical More. - And to find out where the Wheel of Mythicality is gonna land. - [Nicole] Ketchup is a smoothie. - [Josh] Yeah, I put ice
in my cereal, so what? - [Nicole] That makes no sense. - [Josh] A hot dog is a sandwich. - [Nicole] A hot dog is a sandwich. (Josh and Nicole laugh) - [Josh] What?
It never fails to amaze me how brightly coloured US Fanta is!
Good episode! But Im wondering, do people widely refer to it as "tap"? Even R & L were a little confused by that. I have always called it a "fountain" drink.
Glass bottle all the way.
just if anyone in wondering. the aluminum doesnt really come in contact with the soda itself. cans are lined with a thin plastic sheet as seen here :)
Am I the only one who googled fanta commercials halfway through?
Edit: I really like this one. It actually kinda fits the GMM ethos. π
This was such a good episode, my friend and I have had this debate about coca cola for so long, he swears mcdonald's tastes different and is better, I swear canned is better.
I'm guessing the "fountain" they used to get the drinks were one of those freestyle machines. Those are way different (and worse, ESPECIALLY for sprite) than the traditional fountains
McDonaldβs used to be the best tap Coke because Coca Cola would send out their own reps to test and tune the syrup blend. That doesnβt happen anymore so every franchise is going to be different now.
guess cans are better overall?
wait i just realised they don't include Pepsi..
also, i've read that Coca-cola was originally meant to be consumed warm, and Pepsi-cola cold.
can anyone confirm this?
