okay little robot let's talk about something fun for a few minutes let's get away from all this covered stuff and get to popular culture and ask and ask why why was cowboy bebop actually canceled that's that's the important question for today not how can we make the education system in the united states more equitable and more efficient for everybody not how to improve the health care system so that when airborne ebola comes down the pike we're gonna be prepared no we're not gonna scream we're not gonna roar over you know irrelevant arguments like that we're gonna scream about cowboy bebop today so i think this is kind of interesting again as a content creator as somebody who's created content you know since 2009 as somebody who's you know takes a look at pop culture but isn't that invested in pop culture i think the death of cowboy bebop is kind of interesting because i think my take on why cowboy bebop died is probably the more the more correct tape take on why cowboy bmob died but it's also not nearly as sexy and as exciting as all these all these people in the fandom menace going all the time so i do have to say i do have to say i actually did watch all of cowboy bebop i didn't think i was going to watch all of cowboy bebop i saw the first episode i fell asleep like halfway through the first episode of house with you but then i watch the second one and the third one the fourth one i don't know tenth one how many however many they came out with they actually came out with like ten of them and so i watched you know all of the rest of them and i thought cowboy bebop was actually quite adequate was it arcane no it was not arcane was it winks no it was not wings was it lock and key no it was not lock and key but was it adequate yes do i pay for netflix yes did i did i watch all of the episodes yes so therefore i would think i would think as far as netflix was concerned uh that would be good enough but obviously it wasn't uh because it was it was canceled so i'm one of those people um i have i saw a couple of the cowboy bebop anime shows when i was sick when i got my booster and i was down for six days i watched a few of the uh the anime shows uh then but other than that i don't know anything about cowboy bebop i didn't particularly like the anime again anime was really cool back in the 90s i don't know it's 2021 i think we're beyond anime at this point that's my personal opinion but i sat there and i watched cowboy bebop and i was kind of curious to see what uh what season two of cowboy bebop would be but of course cowboy bebop uh got cancelled i would argue there's a lot of people out there arguing about why cowboy bebop got cancelled there's the uh the main actress i don't even know who the hell she plays who does she play crap i don't even care enough to know what she played anyways that girl you know there's a main actress she went out she made some snarky comments about the uh oh about the the fans and so people say that was a bad thing as far as cowboy bebop is concerned john cho was like 20 years older than he's supposed to be in the anime so people say that's why people didn't like it there's a whole bunch of reasons why people say that that cowboy bebop was not a particularly good show but the main thing that i would argue and i think the bigger issue we're running into right now with mainstream media and popular culture is the bigger argument is the whole question of did anybody really want this in the first place um and i think that's kind of interesting like when my wife and i watch shows now with the days honestly i dislike it when we find shows on netflix that we start watching because many times those shows never get wrapped up there's never it just kind of goes from point a to point m and then never gets to point z and i think this is a big issue that we're kind of we're seeing in popular culture now where a while ago within the last 20 years all of these television shows decided that they were going to go on these major story arcs so you have to understand when i was a kid and before that um every every show was episodic like every show had a start a middle and end right you had the same characters you had the same world everything else but the show itself you could watch one show and enjoy yourself for that one show if you saw one episode of star trek if you saw an episode of star trek right in the middle you would either like or dislike star trek based off of that show you may want to know how the show started you may want to understand a little bit more of the lore but you could you could watch one episode and and be happy with that one episode right then they started doing these longer story arcs so one episode an episode was a complete story but it has story arcs it started spanning you know uh the entire season sometimes multiple seasons but the nice part back in the day is that you could just sit down and you could enjoy a show so even if your show got canceled so you're sitting there and you're watching a show and the show got cancelled you could still go back and you could enjoy individual episodes of that show because those individual episodes they were in an entire story the issue that we get into is over the past 20 years uh again everything in media everything is all about doing what everybody else is doing so everybody else started doing these long story arcs and so basically in media what they started doing is they started doing these massive massive massive story arcs and the idea being is that you can't simply watch one episode you can't simply watch one season you have to watch the entire show now that works out very well if you have a really good show that really sticks the landing but everything starts going off the rails with lost and ironically like with these really long story arcs lost lost was like one of the first shows they did with these really long story arcs and one of the first shows that completely screwed up the landing of the really long story arc right so each individual episode right you sit there and you watch an individual episode but that individual episode goes into the entire season and the entire season goes in the entire show right we were told when lost came out that there would only be 120 episodes so this would be it would be an entire it would be an entire story and i was there i was there started watching lost uh you know kept watching lost all the way into that last season and then that last season was completely idiotic the last season just didn't make any sense and i have to say i never re-watched lost i never realized lost because because it didn't matter because they didn't stick the landing so all of these other episodes right that's the whole thing like if they stick the landing on finishing off the show then you want to go back and watch individual episodes because they're like oh what did i miss about this particular character what did i miss about this particular storyline it's interesting to go back and see how everything connects if you get to the end of the show and the end of the show sucks then you throw everything in the trash can and you go on to the next deal i think one of the big problems that we're having now is um netflix and a lot of these uh these streaming services what they've done is not only have they decided we're going to have these really long story arcs that are going to span you know the entire show not simply a season but an entire show but beyond that they've also started to do much more of this experimental thing where the idea is instead of doing the research instead of doing the surveys to verify anybody wants to see this show to begin with what we're going to do is we're going to do 10 episodes we're going to do 10 episodes as an experiment if enough people watch the 10 episodes then we'll do season 2 season 3 season four if not enough people watch the episodes then we'll just kill it the problem is again especially for viewers we don't even know what those numbers are like so we don't know like with cowboy bebop if they what what number did cowboy bebop have to hit for it to get renewed we have no idea so if you have all these people talking about cowboy bebop if you have people watching cowboy bebop then you're thinking okay it'll probably get renewed but then when it doesn't get renewed you really have to ask yourself why that is i think about that with another life have you seen another life another life is a horrible show again one of the reasons i can say cowboy bebop is not that bad is because i cannot stomach watching the second season of another life so my wife was away my wife was doing traveling when another life came out the first time so it has starbuck remember starbuck from battlestar galactica remember when she used to play good characters i missed those days anyways uh there's this another live show and i don't know there's a bunch of gen zers in a spaceship and they're having transgender sex i don't get it first transgender sex scene that i ever saw but anyways you cannot tell me that many people saw another life you cannot tell me that many people gave a damn about another life but another life got a second season right but another life is so bad i was able to get through the first season i got through the first season because i had beer and my wife was away uh and then like when the second season came out i literally i watched half an episode i watched half an episode of the second season and it's just so horrible it's just so horrible and the interesting part there is is like you're like well okay well cowboy bebop cowboy bebop had a fan base cowboy bebop was talked a lot about you know and media and all that kind of stuff people were watching cowboy bebop and again even if they didn't love cowboy bebop even if they didn't think it was the next arcane it was good enough for them to watch the entire season and again i would have watched a season two you look at another life another life nobody talked about nobody gave a crap about it was a pretty garbage show and yet another lifeguard season too and i think the problem that we then get into from a viewer standpoint is that if you watch these shows when you watch these shows now the people that create the shows have an expectation that you were going to get invested in the show because remember that when i was young and i watched a-team or macgyver or whatever else it was amazing it was amazing we just got to watch television back in the day you got to grab your coca-cola or your beer whatever beverage you wanted you got to sit there and you got to watch a show and for an hour half an hour whatever else you just got to go off into fantasyland and that was it after a long day of work after a long day of school you would go in front of a television and you would veg out that's what we used to call it you just sit there and you would enjoy a television show because it was the one time there's a one time today you were not expected to do anything you were just sitting there watching television it was beautiful the problem we get into the modern world though is again everybody wants something you had enough everybody wants something out of you nowadays they want they want they want they want they want they want they want and the creators of all these television shows they want you to become invested in the show they want you to care about the show they want you to grasp the minutia of the show and so they're going to create the shows in such a way that you have to try to pay attention to what the hell is going on so that you'll know what happens in the next episode the next episode the next episode the next episode again remember with the episodic shows what was really great is you could watch an episode half drunk you could watch an episode half drunk you could forget that you even saw the episode by the time you're seeing the next episode in the series and it didn't really matter there might be like one or two story like small story points where you're like uh but other than that it didn't care whereas in these new shows if you miss one of the episodes you are going to be completely lost like you have to be invested in the show entertainment is work which is really screwed up for all the gen zeros out there all the chance ears i just want you to grasp this concept when i was growing up we used to do our work our work was our work and then we watched television we did not used to consider entertainment work which is really bizarre like when you really look at it you look at the fandom menace you look at so many people nowadays how many people really look at consuming content as work might be one of the reasons we're having so many psychological problems in the world i don't under i don't understand why i can't pay the rent i don't understand why i'm not getting ahead in life i am i'm spending so much time and so much effort watching this television and yet i'm not getting a raise at my job well he could turn off the television but but but what i what i listen watch on the television is real eli anyway but yeah this thing right you're supposed to put all this time and energy and all that investing yourself into these shows so that you understand what's going on but the exact same point and again this is this this is the greed we have in this modern world where the people creating the entertainment demand or they're trying to demand they're trying to demand that you invest yourself into the show but they don't do the research they don't do the surveys they don't verify that enough people are going to want to watch the show from the get-go so that there will be a season two season three season four like i would argue like when you look at cowboy bebop when you look at some of these shows it should be a given it should be an assumption that there will be season two season three season four i would argue especially since they're only doing ten episodes in these seasons if they pick up a show there should be an assumption of 40 episodes now maybe it doesn't work maybe it doesn't work again just because you assume doesn't mean that's how it's actually going to work out in the world maybe when it goes up there's something about the tone like maybe it's like again maybe it's one of these pandemic you know movies or television shows you're gonna make a television show about a global pandemic and then all of a sudden a global pandemic actually happens and nobody actually wants to watch your show right again that's a reason to cancel the show before it goes through four four seasons but by and large they should do enough work to say yes we are confident enough about this show that we honestly feel that we're going to get four seasons out of it and because the problem that we're getting into now is that okay so you sit down you sit down and you watch these episodes and you remember everything that's going on and you get invested in the show and they cancel it and they cancel it and they cancel it how many show again if you look at netflix how many shows do they cancel where they have these huge starry arcs they end on a cliffhanger you're invested to watch the next season and then they just cancel it because they could they could they couldn't they could not be bothered to do the initial research to verify enough people were going to actually want to watch this piece of crap to begin with and i think that's the bigger problem that we're having with them with so much of the content nowadays is that they're just throwing more and more and more and more of this content out there putting more and more and more money into it without really asking will will there be the return on before before it goes out people are watching it ask before then will there be the return on investment that means it makes sense i think about this like right now so my wife and i are currently watching was it wheel of time so so amazon bought the rights to wheel of time the wheel of time series is apparently a 14 book series and so we're watching the first i guess 10 episodes in the wheel of time series and to be honest with you it's good enough it's good enough it's it is an adequate show i'd be more than happy to watch season two and three and four and five and six i'm also not going to be particularly sad if it gets cancelled which it probably will why i think it's interesting though is when you sit there and you watch it it's an adequate show but it's not a great show not great at good actors not great actors good set pieces not great set pieces good plot not great plot it's good enough at the end of the day after you've done your actual work you sit there with the with tea now i've had to give up my beer had to give up my beer now that i'm getting lapped by 12 year olds had to get my beer anyway so i sit there with my bedtime tea and my wife and we sit there and watch the show why i find this interesting though and again i think that's one of the big problems with media is how much amazon is spending on the show amazon is spending huh wait for it 10 million dollars per episode for wheel of time they're spending 10 million dollars per episode on you know an adequate schlocky fantasy show and again that's where you sit back and you think about because you know the b counters the b encounters are going to sit there the big counters are looking at 10 million dollars per episode they're going to be looking at how many people are actually watching the episode and you know they're not going to be happy you know they're not going to be happy i know they're not going to be happy it doesn't make sense to be spending 10 million per episode on an adequate kind of schlocky television show and so you know it's probably going to be cancelled and so one of my frustrations again we're saying they're watching me all the time is like why don't you just spend a million dollars in an episode or two million dollars an episode why don't you decrease a set pieces you know figure out how to trim this thing a little bit so that you actually get a good roi again that's where you look at like cowboy bebop or like jupiter was it jupiter ascending i love that show i loved jupiter ascending jupiter is sending cost cost netflix 200 million dollars for a 10 part first season right so 10 episode first season 200 million dollars i love jupiter setting jupiter's setting had jupiter sending had the old people trying to talk to the young people it had the old people when they were young it had it had all of a sudden it was actually a very very good superhero show i was really excited to watch season two and again they leave they leave jupiter ascending it's no not jupiter or jupiter what's this it's not jupiter sunny that's the other one was it i don't know it was a really good it was a really good superhero show that netflix came out with anyways but you know they they leave they leave the last episode of season one on a cliffhanger and then they just don't renew it they spent 200 million 200 million they spent on this show and then leave it at a cliffhanger and then don't renew it and you're like and you sit there and you think well if you had spent less money on the show you probably could have still had a really good show um that you that would have made sense to continue having more episodes on because it's like well well we're not we are not getting the view count to make it worth 200 million dollars and i think anybody would be like yeah probably not probably not right i i don't think any of us thought that netflix creating a superhero show would be worth 200 million dollars but maybe if you produced it for 50 million dollars or 20 million dollars but but we could have produced that for 50 million dollars well no but maybe if you had scaled it back a little bit you didn't need all those set pieces you didn't need all that stuff if you want to screw if you would have scraped out a lot of the things that cost you a lot of money you probably could have had a reasonably priced show with a good plot with characters that people were invested in and then you could have a show that would have been season one and season two and season three and season four and then by the time season four comes around then you could wrap up the entire story line and then i could go to a friend of mine and say hey have you seen this show 40 episodes absolutely amazing and then that's a valuable thing and then netflix would have 40 episodes people could go to and watch and watch and watch and watch and watch now they have this 200 million dollar season then why should anybody give a damn about it ends at a cliffhanger you're going to watch 10 episodes and get to a cliffhanger so now you spent 200 million dollars for this thing and that 200 million dollars is no longer really that valuable because who the hell wants to watch 10 10 episodes that's going to go to nowhere and i think if these companies just spent more time really thinking about what people want producing you know bringing down the prices instead of 200 million dollars or 100 million dollars bringing down the prices to a reasonable amount that they could actually create good content and have people excited about it again again you think about the fan you think about the fans of some of these shows again the fans of uh fans of star trek it was a budget of star trek star trek has a had a crappy budget back in the day but everybody loved it it was an absolutely great show again if you go back and you watch wrath of khan it was interesting after i watched the crappy new wrath of con i went back and watched the old wrath of khan and do you realize in the old ravicon there was like there were about five minutes of special effects really if you watch the old wrathicon right basically you have the bridge of the starship enterprise then you have that weird little habitat down on the planet you have another couple of set pieces but again a hollywood movie from back in the day that everybody loves considers a classic the whole nine yards and realistically it was about five sets with about five minutes of special effects and because they focused on the characters because they focused on the storyline because they focused on that type of thing people really consider that still a great piece of cinema now now they throw all these special effects of things and nobody gives a damn so anyways i don't know that was me blathering that was me blathering for 22 minutes about why bebop cowboy bebop got cancelled cowboy bebop would cancel because they couldn't be bothered to verify anybody really want to watch the show to begin with and some people like me that actually watch the show that would have been willing to watch another season on cowboy bebop we're not going to get another season cowboy bebop which i think is what i think is interesting here though is again i wonder how much of this damages this damage is the overall ecosystem that they're trying to create because as they keep cancelling the shows right as they create shows as they try to get you invested in the shows and then as they cancel the shows how many people lose interest in these types of things like i think about this um so my wife and i we we watch television because at the end of the day when you have two people it's really easy to sit down and watch television and drink some some bedtime tea one of the things i've thought about is that my wife wasn't around and i've even talked about with my wife is that maybe we should stop watching so much tv at night maybe we should stop watching tv at night because there's so much of this stuff there's so much of this you have this show that leads to nowhere it gets tiring it gets boring finding new shows is a pain in the ass it's like you know what maybe we should just have bedtime tea and read books we might start doing that we might start doing that because again you're just like man yeah you know i don't know i just spent 22 minutes throwing words at you i threw words at you for 22 minutes because that's what i get paid for sometimes sometimes i give you good words sometimes i give you deep philosophical words and other times i just throw words at you because that's how youtube is that's how youtube is so anyways put your thoughts down below did you uh oh did you watch cowboy bebop how did you find cowboy bebop would you have watched season two again i am not a huge fan of cowboy bebop i do not believe cowboy bebop was a great show but but what i will tell you is i watched olive cowboy bebop so if i watched it and i'd be willing to watch season two i i do really wonder where the where the numbers come out why why was it cancelled why was cowboy bebop cancel but another life was renewed inquiry minds would like to know so anyways as i say i'm just here shaking my brain nibble shaking my brain nipples so i can pay for what actually matters what actually matters is dojo derby it's a little robot car vehicles is a full tech platform quad core processor four gigs of ram full full tcp wi-fi stack on this thing basically these are little remote control car or uh robot or computer controlled cars that you get to drive around uh we're going to have races we're going to have competitions we're going to have all kinds of cool stuff but i need to buy things i need to buy things for dojo derby like my fancy new rdu cam infrared camera so that's why i'm here shaking my brain nipples um if you would like to build your own dojo derby vehicle or learn more about dojo derby you can go to silicondojo.com and i have this right up on the dojo derby mark iii vehicle i'm going to continue documenting all this stuff so that hopefully people can build their own dojo derby vehicles wherever they are in the world uh all the stuff on the dose at every vehicle basically should be able to be purchased from amazon literally the only thing you can't purchase from amazon is there's this little uh this little mounting system that mounts the camera uh to the car itself that you gotta build get yourself some super glue and a couple pieces of wood and you can build that but basically everything else you can literally just buy from amazon and then here is all of the code for what we're doing uh so if you want to take a look at that go to silicondojo.com if you want to support what i'm doing there's a link down below to donorbox where you can throw a couple of dollars in i do do zoom meetings for professional development so if you want to think about what to do with your career what education to get that type of thing in the tech world there's a link down below for the zoom meetings that gets live streamed every thursday from 2 to 4 p.m and uh that's it that's all i got so what do you think cowboy bebop cowboy bebop it wasn't great it was great it was weird it was a weird show i don't know there's a lot of weird shows out there does it have to be great that's where you wonder like with cowboy bebo if they had if they spent half the money if they had spent half the money on cowboy bebop could they have then had a show that was good enough for people to continue watching and that the bean counters would have been happy with because it would have cost a reasonable amount of money i don't know things to think about thanks a partner anyways see you all later
