"Philadelphia Basement parging: Cementing, Waterproofing, and Painting the Walls"

welcome to another Dependable concrete video today we're featuring a project in North Earth PA where we transformed a dark peeling and Dusty basement into a clean bright space and we finished by painting the walls and floors for a fresh new look let's drop down and take a look at this basement as you can see these walls have exposed stones with Deep Pockets that provide opportunities for rodents insects and moisture to enter into the basement when this project is complete the walls will not only be repaired but also aesthetically pleasing with a flat leveled surface painted in bright white waterproofing sealer stay tuned into the end of this video and see how we have finished these basement walls to look as good as drywall before we apply semen to the walls we take care to protect important elements such as electrical boxes pipes windows and electrical wires from any splatter that may occur we do this to ensure that these critical components are not damaged or impacted by the cement during the process but before we seem at the walls we must remove the damaged concrete floor so when applying semen to the walls we can seam it below the height of the new concrete floor the current floor is very thin and old however the new floor would be much thicker at three inches and made of a strong 4000 psi concrete additionally it would be leveled precisely using a laser level after cleaning and prepping the walls we are now applying a bonding glue to strengthen the connection between the wall and the first coat of cement this will help ensure that the cement sticks well to the wall and forms a strong durable Bond it's time to mix the cement we used one bag of masonry semen to four buckets of sand there are five two culture segment to the walls the first coat that we apply is the scratch coat to make this cement application process more efficient we are using a mortar sprayer this allows us to quickly apply the semen to the walls saving time and effort additionally we can use a sprayer to fill in holes between floor joists it's showing that every part of the wall is covered and protected to achieve a more professional look when working on basement walls we take care of the sharpen all corners and edges this attention to detail not only enhances the appearance of the finished product but also resembles a dry wall like look water was seeping through the lower walls at this job site so we took steps to prevent any further damage to keep the basement dry and protect our work we applied a waterproofing barrier on the lower wall this would help to ensure that water does not penetrate the walls and cause any issues in the future in addition to preventing water seepage and keeping the basement dry using a waterproofing barrier can also protect the painted walls from peeling when water seeps through the walls it can cause the paint to peel and bubble [Music] we have applied the base coats and now the walls are flatter and better prepared for the final and finishing coat the base coats have helped to create a smoother and more even surface which will make it easier to apply the final coat and achieve the desired finish with the base coats in place we are now ready to move on to the final stages of the project installing a new concrete floor presents a unique opportunity to easily add waterproofing Plumbing around the perimeter of the walls this is because the concrete has already been removed making it easier to access the area and install the necessary Plumbing the wars have been finished and now need time to dry out before we can proceed with spraying them with paint allowing the water to dry out completely is important to ensure that the paint bonds well to the wall for long lasting paint job this is another step we take of protecting our clients investment we are now ready to pour the floor but before we can do that it's important to install a vapor barrier on the floor base this is because concrete is porous and can allow water vapor to penetrate through the floor by installing a vapor barrier we can prevent this from happening and ensure that the floor remains dry and free from water damage in the future this is an important step in ensuring the longevity and durability of the new floor it's time to pour the concrete to pour the concrete floor we would be using a concrete pump to efficiently move the concrete into the basement our Mix Design for this floor is a 4000 PSI mix with fiber mesh and a five inch slump with half inch Stone using a pump to move the concrete is a more efficient method as it saves time and reduces labor Additionally the mixed design required to pump the concrete makes it easy to level and finish the concrete once it's poured after allowing the new concrete floor to cure for one day we will use a Precision Tool to saw cut several control joints into the surface of the floor these joints are essential for preventing cracking to ensure the drying process of the walls and floor and prepare for painting the basement we have more than two commercial size dehumidifiers removing moisture from the walls and Floors is critical before adding paint to prevent the paint from peeling or bubbling by using these dehumidifiers we can draw out excess water and ensure that the surface is completely dry before we proceed with painting which again will help to ensure a high quality and long lasting paint job we also rehabilitate our clients steps by replacing all the trends the old Treads were in poor condition with cracks and looseness that made them dangerous as part of the project we also reinforced a wobbly railing to improve safety and stability now the steps are much safer and more reliable providing our client with peace of mind and a secure path up and down their stairs for the replacement Treads we are using a three-quarter inch Pine with a rounded Edge these Treads will provide a sturdy and reliable surface for the steps while also adding a touch of style with their rounded Edge our clients plan to apply a clear coat finish to the Treads which will showcase the natural grain of the wood and create a beautiful natural look for the staircase together foreign it's time to brighten up this basement to give the basement walls a professional long-lasting finish we are using a high quality Shimmer lens paint that is specifically designed for use on basement walls we will be spraying two coats of this paint to ensure a smooth and even coverage that will resist wear and tear over time with this paint our clients could enjoy a bright freshly painted basement that looks great and provides long dusting protection against moisture and dust now it's time to paint the floor but first we trim all Corners tightly against the wall with a trim brush for a clean and precise finish next we'll use an oversized 18 inch roller to apply the two coats of paint to the floor to ensure that the new concrete floor is protected and looks great for years to come we are using a high quality floor paint that is specifically designed to withstand foot traffic and other wear and tear this paint will provide a durable and long lasting finish that can resist scuffs scratches and other types of damage ensuring that the floor remains in great condition even with regular use and with this paint our clients can enjoy a basement floor that is easy to sweep and mop we have successfully completed this project and our clients are thrilled with the results the basement is now Road improved waterproofed and free of dust providing a clean and safe environment for our clients to use the walls are now flat and even thanks to several coats of cement and the floor is smooth and leveled with straight control joints our clients can now
