so why what why pard your wall is in the first place why not just paint them right if you want them to look nice well why not you know just like drywall the whole thing well yes first of all you know part what is parching really purging is just a its layer of like a almost like a stucco that you plaster onto your wall that provides another layer of protection and allow it gives you a flat sort of nice surface to to paint on drywall is a whole nother thing and if you if you just like glue drywall to these walls you're gonna have a whole ton of problems because dampness on the other side of your drywall not good and it that's just a recipe for mold one of the things that purging does is it helps as a moisture barrier it's not a great moisture barrier it's certainly not waterproofing don't misunderstand it will not waterproof your walls true waterproofing can only be done on the outside of the house um but if you did accidentally buy a house that has water everywhere in the basement you need like a you need to regrade everything you need a French drain on the outside like a sump pump on the inside to get the water out when it gets in you need all kinds of craziness that purging doesn't solve parking helps as a moisture barrier and then you can flip stuff like dry lock on the interior wall once you part it to just keep it dry concrete and brick are porous so water does seep in that key helps keep the wall dry helps keep water from seeping in and basically just keeps your basement less humid your other option is like put framing up which framing is I mean this is you think this is a pain in the ass you know frame framing everything you have to like usually at least where I am I have to get a permit if I want to put framing but I can take a trowel and I can like mash some stuff onto my wall so I'll do that well not easier but it's uh it's easier so that's what purging is so so the goal right is to purge this whole wall and paint over it before you do that you got to get all the old paint off you can use a trowel use a paint scraper for me just this brick hammer using the sort of butt and of it seems to work just fine so I've been doing that works for me do it works for you [Music] definitely want to wear glasses while you do this paint chips will fly off and hit you in the face all the time [Music] so you just do this for about you know 25 hours you'll be done easy as that you don't need to grind that stuff off anyway before you start troweling mortar onto the wall because mortar is designed to stick to concrete and other masonry not paint see I'm knocking the paint off paint comes off the mortar stuck to the paint mortar will just pull off you gotta get all of this crap off up here I have brick I don't know if you can see above-grade i have bricks here stacked on top of my concrete walls and once I get up there I'm not gonna you do not want to be hitting bricks with a hammer over and over your bricks crack you bricks will crack if you are just beat him with a hammer repeatedly then you're just gonna have to replace the bricks and nobody wants that that's even more work and nobody wants more work this stuff I'm just gonna have to grind down that's okay okay let's take a look at the result you can see how it's just been smoothed down we might try to chip a little more of it off but this is really the result we want now you can see that some of the epoxy I'm able to sort of peel off like this and if you look on the back of it there's paint so this is why we want to scrape all the paint off our wall before we part because if our parting is adhering to this paint in the same way the epoxy is then it will also just peel off and that's not what we want so I want to this epoxy that's able to more easily come off I want to get it off and then get off the paint behind it okay grind it down the old epoxy now I'm going to brush off the wall and then it'll be ready to finish parching now I'm just going to take a masonry brush and sweep out all the loose crumbs and stuff and we'll be ready to part that's about it
