timothy chapter 2 verse 8. i will be reading in your hearing tonight 1st timothy 2 and eight he begin at the reading of god's holy word i will therefore that men pray everywhere lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting so far the word of god honor and praise and thanks to my lord and savior jesus christ for his love and kindness toward me i greet our esteemed bishop in the person of the right reverend dr jacqueline e mccullough to our executive pastors overseer robin edwards and pastor george hyman jr to his wife theresa to all of our beth rafa clergy our bethropha family our stated the theme for the week has been men lifting up holy hands taken from first timothy chapter 2 verse 8. the scripture admonishes us to pray without anger without quarreling without resentment and without doubt in our minds but rather it says to lift up holy hands and so we encourage you tonight to do that with these hands lift them in his presence surrender in his presence unbelief submit in adoration and all week long we've been told that we can lift up holy hands without apology without shame amen this is not because of the color of your skin why you are more demonstrative in your worship it's not because you're not educated it's because you have so much information about your god and you can't know that much about him and not respond to him some kind of way amen he is wonderful he's awesome he's mighty he's eternal he's everlasting he's long suffering he's merciful he's kind he's forgiving oh my god he's a waymaker he holds our heart when our hearts are about to fail he lifts up our head when our heads are hung down he's strengthened us when we feel like we're falling oh my god we just could go on and on and on even if we had a thousand tons we could not praise him enough i came to praise him lord have mercy yes i did i came to praise the lord among the congregation of the righteous among my brothers and my sisters i join with you i join with you in praise not only with you but all of you out there on social media all of you who are watching whether far and near we are together we are unified when we raise our hands together oh my god this is why the enemy doesn't want us to worship together because it's too strong it's too powerful amen it intimidates him because he knows that we're recognizing that all our help what comes from the lord have mercy i don't know where you got your help this morning but i know when i woke up and put my feet on the floor my help was there every morning that i wake up new mercies i see all that i need is what his hands provide great is his what faithfulness is he faithful well act like he's faithful right now come on give him an ovation give him a clap thank him amen don't apologize we thank people for things that they don't do we'd give people credit for they didn't they didn't deserve it we were just being kind but we don't have to fake this because he's worthy of it amen glory to god don't you love him tonight i love him because the song says he first what loved me that's right i didn't love him first he loved me first amen and that first love keeps on drawing me and drawing me and drawing me and that first love never drops me never forsakes me never forget about me oh my god i think we ought to praise him if you have that kind of love in your life you don't have to look anywhere else whatever you get is just it's just gravy oh lord have mercy some of us are crying over gravy when you have the real thing amen we thank the lord for his goodness his mercy tonight welcome to the international gathering at beth rafa this is our men's revival the culminating night of our men's revival scripture taken from first timothy 2 and 8 exalting us that men ought to lift up holy hands and they have been ministering to us how many know that they have been ministering to us i remember the sermons i remember all the things that they have said to encourage my heart to strengthen my heart and to help me to stand fast with my hands up amen no matter what's going on keep your hands up girl keep your hands up can't make it with your hands down got to keep your hands up amen so many things come to pull my hand down but thanks me to god he gives me the strength to keep my hands up amen we're going to give an offering tonight that is suitable amen whatever it is that the lord lays on your heart to give give it with a willing mind whatever it is that god has afforded you to give give it with a cheerful spirit won't you do that now in jesus name [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh it's victory amen amen amen thank you so much praise team thank you thank you now sometimes it doesn't look like we have the victory right if you're honest sometimes you feel kind of defeated sometimes when you look at your circumstances they have not changed and other people can make you feel like you're going around in circles with your life and you're not going anywhere but listen to the song you already have the victory how does that work that's the way it is when you walk with the lord it's not dependent on what you see or you feel it's not dependent on what people say come on is that depending on what you have or don't have is dependent on what he says and he says you have the victory i think you ought to lift your faith i and thank him that you already have the victory amen we are creatures of feelings but go beyond your feeling tonight and grab a hold of your faith and tell yourself i have the victory amen amen we're so glad as i said i welcome you tonight this is our last night of our men's revival and truly my soul has been fed amen i and i listened i took notes and i applied amen it helped me in my devotions in the morning whatever was said kind of pushed me to another level i had a lot of stuff to write this morning because my my faith was stirred my devotion was stirred because i heard so many things from the word of god from that one little passage of scripture that one verse amen praise the lord so and sunday night it was kicked off by uh pastor brian amen and he talked about hands over fist that means instead of putting up your fists lift up your hands and oh did he talk to us about the different kinds of prayer how many of you remember that amen and then on monday night we were ministered to by minister joshua thomas and he talked about positioning ourselves placing ourselves in the posture the scripture was very clear this is what you look like when you want when you want to worship if you want things to be saved if you want things to change keep your hands up so we thank him so much for that and then on wednesday night we had two ministers we had we had father osborne and also minister stephen locke and father as one was so powerful he spoke to us like a father talking to his children like paul talking to timothy and saying this is a real test amen talking about lifting your hands but having love in your heart at least that's what i got from him that you can't just do this and have ought in your heart against people you have to go to put to put your praise down put your prayer down run and straighten it out and come back and lift up holy hands we thank him for doing that amen and then we had minister stephen locke and he talked he told us about men in the bible men in the bible who what who prayed and got answers men ought to always pray talked about daniel and ezekiel and and and talked about uh um um jesus amen and how and elijah his favorite person and how they prayed ordinary men getting extraordinary answers because of prayer and then of course um we thank the lord for our wednesday night we thank the lord for um um reverend jackson amen and he talked to us whatever you believe that's what's going what you're going to do with your hands you live what you believe your faith determines your behavior so whatever you're holding in your heart is going to come out of your hands whatever you're nursing in your spirit that's what's going to come out of your hands if you have anger you're going to have the fist if you have discouragement your hands are going to hang down so we thank the lord for him giving us the answer the antidote to that that we should trust the lord and pray and our heart and our hands will match together and then last night we thank the lord for these two gentlemen we thank the lord for deacon mark stevenson talking to us about instruction for prayer and he told us that we were instructed to pray and he gave us example of how abraham how we believed god and the bottom line is to believe god believe what he says that's the instruction that's what's going to keep your hands up when you believe the word of god and then of course reverend willie littles talk about lord tell me what to do with my hands my god he talked about a c t s amen he told us to adore god to confess to thank him and then to supplicate and watch god work for us and to reach out our hands because there are things in the bible that talk about hands amen so didn't we have a rich week come on i'm not the only one who took notes don't be looking at me dry i certainly hope that you took some notes because you're gonna need it tomorrow amen i hope you were listening praise the lord because you can listen and not apply but i believe if i'm going to give my time to listening i have to give my time to applying well tonight we have the pastor executive pastor pastor george hyman who is going to tie up the whole week amen and bring us to the climax of this great great men's revival overseer and all of the men who have gone before the lord bless you the lord bless you real good amen amen i thank the lord for my wife this evening and and my children amen and i thank the lord especially he took us down to north carolina and brought us back safely i thank the lord for traveling mercy saints listen you can't take this stuff for granted these trucks are cra hey you understand that amen i thank the lord for traveling mercies amen amen much to be grateful for tonight i want to turn your attention to the book of ezra i know we've been hearing from uh timothy amen all this week i want to turn your attention to the book of ezra chapter 8 verse 21 amen the book of ezra chapter 8 verse 21 and thank you all for all those who have been praying for my family my father amen just continue to keep him in prayer amen that's ezra chapter 8 verse 21 here begin at the reading of god's holy word then i proclaimed a fast there at the river of ahava that we might afflict ourselves before our god to seek of him a right way for us and for our little ones and for all our substance so far the scripture and tonight i just want to take a topic if you want his hand upon then lift your hands unto if you want his hand upon then lift your hands unto a little background ezra is said to be the author of this book he also wrote the book of nehemiah and ezra was a jewish priest and scribe whose name meant help or helper the book of ezra tells the history of the exiles returning from babylon to jerusalem in 538 bc this book opens with the fulfillment of jeremiah's prophecy after 70 years of exile the jews would return to their homeland you'll see that in jeremiah 25 verses 11 through 12 also jeremiah 29 and 10 and ezra 1 and 1. there were three caravan trips if you will the first trip was led by zaru zaruba bell the second trip here we're talking about is led by ezra and the third exiled journey was led by nehemiah now as ezra he devoted himself to studying and observing the law of god and to teaching its decrees and laws ezra chapter 7 verse 10 says the word of the lord says for ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the lord and to do it and to teach in israel statues and judgment judgments so father scripture so ezra was well versed in the law he was a teacher by trade and he was a praying man one of the things you will notice about the book of ezra is the mentioning of the hand of the lord it's mentioned several times you see it in ezra chapter 7 verse 6 the word of the lord says according to the hand of the lord his god upon him you see it in chapter 7 verse 28 the hand of the lord my god was upon me you see it in chapter 8 verse 18 by the good hand of our god upon us we also see it in chapter 8 verse 22 the hand of our god is upon all them for good that seek him here's the contrast mentioned right there in that same scripture but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him so father scripture so here in our setting ezra has gathered the people together thousands of men women and children he is being sent with religious and political powers by the persian king to lead this group of exiles from babylon to jerusalem you'll see it in ezra chapter 7 verse 8 and also verse 12. now ezra chapter 8 verse 15 the word the word of the lord says and i gathered them together to the river and their abode we intense three days and i viewed the people and the priests and found there none of the sons of levi so father scripture so ezra's progress came to a stop why because there was an absence of levites among the group to offer services unto god so now after giving instructions in verses 16 and 17 regarding where to go and how to ask for ministers for the house of their god verse 18 says by the good hand of god upon them how did this happen it happened by the good hand of god upon them what happened about 258 levites ministers were added to the group right so now when we look at our text the scripture says that ezra proclaimed a fast at the river ezra called a fast that they might do what afflict themselves before their god the first point i want to draw your attention to is afflict yourself now the word of flick here it means to bring oneself low it means to humble yourself to bow down so to be afflicted is to retire your status reduce humiliate and degrade what you think you know and who you think you are see this affliction here is a mentality of i don't know and the only thing i do know is i don't know but what do you know yeah i know i know a little something well what is it you know i know that i don't know to afflict is to humble go low the thing that's interesting about afflicting or humbling yourself is humility promotes and stimulates dependence in the humility there's an acknowledgement of my inability which fosters my reliance on god as a result there's a lifting of the hands acknowledging who god is and how much i'm in need of him because see as long as i think i got this there is no lifting of my hands and reaching for him as long as i spend my life believing that i know what i'm doing there's there's no reliance on him why wait and reach and only reach for god when things are completely going wrong why wait and only reach for him when everything is turned upside down why not continue to reach for him when everything is going right reach for god on credit we don't know what we're going to need and when we're going to need it we don't know what tomorrow looks like come on i want you to practice it right now drop everything in your hands and reach lift your hands and reach for god now see you can't genuinely reach for him until you acknowledge the fact of how much you actually need him i did say humility has to be involved because as long as i believe i got this i'm not reaching the second point i want to point out the scripture says that he called the fast at this river and they afflicted themselves to do what to seek of him the second point is seek of him scripture says they afflicted themselves before their god to seek of him what a right way for us and for our little ones and for all our substance why afflict and seek of him a right way you afflict and seek of him a right way because there is bound to be a way that seems right one of the things that was before them is two paths and other two paths that could be taken from babylon to jerusalem one path is 500 miles taking two months and the other path is 900 miles taking four months now with thousands of men women and children cattle money precious metals valuable goods and treasures all their food and personal property ezra needed to know which path to take which path am i taking these people on they were coming out of babylon wealthy extremely loaded heading to take part in the continual building of jerusalem and god's house and before ezra here stands what rain a range of ages from the oldest to the youngest many needs and various situations among this group of thousands with all their goods and with this in mind it makes logical sense it doesn't take a whole lot of evaluation to see that the shortest route is best it makes perfect sense to take the 500-mile path over the 900-mile path it makes much sense to to take the shortest distance after all listen even today when we use our navigational systems and you calculate a route and that thing calculates a route for you what does it do it gives you the shortest distance it tells you hey save 15 minutes go this way save 30 minutes go this way instead of driving eight hours you mean to tell me i can get to the i can take the same trip get to the same destination and take a route that's four hours yeah that's not difficult to figure out we're always bent on what's convenient it's not difficult to figure out especially men men with you know it we are bent on what's easiest what's convenient what which way it can get done faster see an affliction and seeking is not necessary when the answer is obvious i don't feel like i need a prayer meeting to figure out that one let me just do what makes sense but ezra was determined to seek god for a right way because there were a few factors at play one of the factors that was at play is any other caravan of people traveling from babylon to jerusalem required armed soldiers guards and escorts to ensure the safety of everyone traveling another factor was ezra said the ezra are already spoken up and he said in verse 22 he said i was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way because we had spoken to the king saying the hand of our god is upon all them for good that seek him but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him so father scripture so how you just you told the king this how you're going to go back and ask for an army to guard you take you safely one of the third factors at play here as we already said there were two choices two ways to go 500 miles versus what 900 miles the weight of all of this the people and their safety your valuable goods the great risk of being mugged stripped robbed and killed can you imagine this weight pulling on him to consider the two months trip over the four months regardless ezra wanted the hand of the lord upon this journey so he got the men together and they lifted their hands unto god now understand this they took the 900 mile path yeah i know the 500 was an option after seeking the lord after afflicting themselves seeking the lord going to god in prayer they took the 900-mile path double distance four months traveling but why double your travel time well you double your travel time because the hand of god was upon the 900 miles don't forfeit his hand for convenience verse 31 of chapter eight word of the lord says then we departed from the river on the twelfth day of the first month to go unto jerusalem and the hand of our god was upon us and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy and of such as lay in weight by the way now here's what i want you to understand tonight as we lift our hands to god god lifts his hands upon us and stays the hand of the enemy listen listen lift i lift my hand unto him he stretches his hand upon and stays the hand of the enemy when they arrived at jerusalem the weight and they waited they waited the um the silver and the gold and the vessels nothing came up short everything was accounted for not a penny was missing and to travel that long with so large amount of treasure tempting the greed of the aggressive prowling tribes of the desert and arriving with everyone and everything accounted for they're health preserved and lives protected a large body of people unfamiliar with traveling finished a journey so long and strenuous in perfect safety only the vigilant care of a superintending providence could have brought them safely from babylon to jerusalem we forget too often and too quickly how much the hand of the enemy is lying in weight i said we forget too often and too quickly how much the hand of the enemy is lying in weight this world is in a flip-flop state there's no security in this system the government is flipping and flopping jobs are at risk food and gas prices are high and they are vaccinated and unvaccinated issues going on one year healthcare workers are heroes the next they are what villains children are getting sick in schools schools are closing all over again the vaccinated are getting sick tensions are high fighting on planes fighting in restaurants the threat on your life is all around tension and pressure is hovering over every day from one bill to the next 401k social security bank accounts are not secured your id and information are at risk on an unsecured internet there is no time for anyone to act like we know what we are doing the enemy is always looking and anticipating every opportunity to strike waiting and lying and wait to overtake you your family and your home but i leave you with this encouragement take every moment to afflict seek and come with uplifted hands as verse 31 says and the hand of god was upon us and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy and of such as lay and wait by the way i want his hand upon so i'm lifting my hands unto the lord bless you tonight let's receive our bishop lord have mercy lord have mercy lord have mercy i thank god for that word it tied up everything that has been talked about this week amen but you know i'm still saying i'm still saying that he didn't have an ear let him hear what the spirit said to the church the one thing he said that could have thrown some of us into a tizzy is that we have to humble ourselves and that's a dirty word for the 21st century christian you are not going to you are not going to minimize my humanity i've got too many things to bring to the table all right hate me some more come on hate me don't hate pastor george just hate me because that's what he was saying that word afflict means it doesn't mean you go and get you know the monks used to walk around and take a strap and beat themselves to bring themselves under subjection or the stoics used to do things to make sure that they keep their flesh under subjection but what the lord is saying is humble yourself by admitting that i need you and i'm dependent on you that's all it means you don't mean you walk around and beat yourself up it just means that stop trying to be so smart and stop trying to think you think well because what do i have tonight maybe not you what do i have that god didn't give me what do what do i have that didn't come from the lord think about it and what is it that i have that i can't give back to him see that's the thing right there what is it that i have to brag about what is it that i have what is it that i'm striving for to bring some significance to myself when he's a significant one in my life see that's what i don't understand the fight for significance is so strong that we don't even know we're doing it it's like an addiction i've got to do something to make myself something now there's nothing wrong with going to school i went to school there's nothing wrong with getting a profession i believe in it there's nothing wrong in working it out and trying and doing whatever whatever god has called you to do but underneath all of that there's a subtle statement it's not even subtle anymore the statement is blatant blatant blatant blatant don't tell me to humble myself that's what's wrong with the black pentecostal church we make people feel like they're nothing when jesus said without me you can do nothing john 15 and when i accept that freely because i realize when i have him i have everything see oh my i'm not going to shoot myself in the foot i'm sorry i don't i need my foot i'm not going to shoot myself in the foot i don't mind telling him i don't know i and i don't i tell people all the time i don't know i don't know how i'm getting there i don't know how it's going to work out i don't have any big solution all i know is i have him i have him and if i have him he knows the way he knows the way and i don't mind appearing like i'm a little dummy you you know my mother always said to me you play fool to catch wise you know what that means you don't always have to act like you're so smart you know you always have to know everything because the more you don't know is the more you get to know see sometimes you think you know something and you just listen listen to somebody else say oh my god i didn't know you know the the other day i never know anything much about you know technology and whatever i do know enough to get get by but but you know reverend kendra came to hit that button and turned that stuff i said well blow me down i'm sitting here all this time trying to figure this out and all she did was come and give me a little and there i go now i know did you hear me i was so grateful now i know cause somebody told me but that's the way i feel about the lord you know i just i i'm not fighting and i'm not mad at you for fighting i just know that i i just don't know and i want to know what he knows and i want to know what impresses him master are you pleased you know are you satisfied huh are you happy right now are you happy because if you're not happy i'm not happy you're not happy i'm not happy you're not happy you think i'm joking i'm so serious because you're waiting so many years trying to make a point about ourselves and the point still isn't made the point is jesus that's all i want to say that's all i want to say thank you pastor george listen to me and another thing is you can't tell smart people that they don't know the shortcut you know they they you can't tell them that they're a little shortcut ain't going to get them and they always know so much and you better not challenge them now because they'll insult you yeah we can do this we can do that and it's going to work this listen quick fast and intelligent they always have a shortcut because christianity today does not believe in waiting thank you pastor george we ain't waiting abraham waited 25 years just to think he could have a son i feel a moan coming on now see and isaac had to wait 20 years and let me get up there just to find out if his wife could get pregnant listen we we're waiting long because we count the years see how many gray years i have i've lost my youth i've lost this i've lost that then you're just a born loser i haven't lost anything because every minute of the day it was to the glory of god he used it to bring me to where i am today i'm not losing anything i'm not being robbed of nothing anything he took because he had to take it and thank god he took it and i'm happy that he took it and i'm so glad he didn't leave it all i'm saying you can't say that today pastor george this is not going to be a popular message because people are too smart they're too glib they've been everywhere they feel like they have to get where they have to go at any cost and they'll do anything don't touch their pet desire don't even give them counsel about their significance because it means waiting but the lord told me they that wait upon the lord shall renew their strength they'll mount them with wings like an eagle run and not be weary what [Music] listen i you know i used to wonder why the old people rock like that they were waiting they weren't in a hurry and we're in a hurry going nowhere because by the time we get there we thought it was a fistful of water you know what a fistful of water is nothing you can't hold water in your fist but i'm telling you we this message is just for a selected few not everybody will hear it appropriate it and live with it i don't know who will hear it or who won't i don't have that ability but i know this word went for somebody who is frustrated and feel like their life is on hold or they're discouraged or despondent and what the lord is saying take the four month ride stop trying to get there in a short space of time so by the time you get there nothing will be lost thank you pastor george thank you because a shortcut is filled with all kinds of greedy people folks waiting for you stop waiting to tear you down take the take the path take the path that's all and uh and i just want to encourage you take the path tonight i don't know your business i know but i know this message did not come for nothing and i know you're preach proof probably you've heard some now you know how to say amen and glory to god and it don't mean nothing it didn't hit your head nor your brain but somebody gotta gotta get a a a vision of what god is saying somebody got it cut it down to their toes and they're gonna leave from here and adjust their whole life to accommodate what god just said somebody got it somebody got they're gonna stop anything god oh that door okay i'll close that one oh that that call i'm not gonna make that call or that call whatever you say when you hear the word like that and it revolutionize your life it doesn't take a long time for you to make the shift and i hear the lord saying to somebody make the shift tonight you are on a road for a two-month trip because you didn't make you didn't see the wisdom it didn't make sense to you to go four months that doesn't make sense and you want to appear to be sensible you don't want nobody to call you no food you don't want them to keep laughing at you and scratching their head wondering what's going on with your life so you gotta do something you gotta do something i ain't doing nothing figure it out figure it out track me wonder but if god says sit in this chair forever that's just where you'll find me because you know why he knows everything and pastor george i know nothing i don't mind you thinking i'm a failure [Music] all right i'm gonna leave that alone because you know when i feel moans coming on me you all get a little antsy but i don't mind what i look like tonight as long as i know the lord is on my side that's all i want to say that's all i want to say somebody out there wipe your face go wash your face put a smile on your face and let everybody know i'm fine i'm fine it's not what you think or what you feel is what god says and i'm satisfied when you get like that you're dangerous in the kingdom of hell you're an irritant to other people but the joy of the lord is your strength thank you pastor george i thank god my hands gonna be up don't always feel like it but i'm gonna pull myself up don't always make sense but i'm gonna pull myself up it's very lonely but i'm gonna pull myself up can't explain why why why not but i'm going hired about [Music] because all of my help comes from the lord [Music] thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you hallelujah to jesus thank you lord when i feel down and don't know what to do i look to him because he always brings me through when my heart is heavy and the tears are coming down i trust him because he can always be found [Music] my hands i lift my heart i trust my knees about i give him the praise my hands
