the Tesla Model Y is quickly becoming the best-selling vehicle of any kind around the world and for good reason while Tesla has its reputation for certain quality control issues over the years they have more experience than any other company when it comes to electric vehicles all of their expertise came together for the model y borrowing from the model 3 but putting it into a crossover SUV shape one of the most popular categories of vehicle a little over a month ago I purchased a new 2022 model y technically I purchased right before Tesla switched to model year 2023 and there's only one small change between my car and one that you'd order today which I'll detail other than that this is the model y that you can order today so today we're going to get into the good and the bad in my experience so far let's get into it [Music] to start off with let's detail the main aspects of the model y it's a five-seater crossover SUV which means for this car it seats five fairly comfortably and is very spacious for cargo the front seats are comfortable and have normal adjustments but one thing to note is that the passenger seat doesn't have moving lumbar support for seating Tesla also sells the seven seater option but this is by no means meant for seven adults my configuration is long range getting an EPA estimate of 330 miles on a charge 0-60 in 4.8 seconds and top speed of 130 miles per hour I went with basic included autopilot stock white paint and Gemini Wheels with white interior I wanted to try the white interior because it looks great but I'm also curious to see and report on how it holds up over time I've heard mixed reports the main thing I like so much about the model Y is its cargo space it has those five seats with an all glass roof so it not only gives you awesome views while driving especially from the back but gives you more Headroom and just feels more spacious then there's the powered hatchback when you open that you see the spacious flat trunk but underneath that trunk is a very large under storage compartment and a second smaller under storage compartment near that there are also side Cubbies on each side of the trunk a cargo cover is included to hide valuables from being seen through the rear window and if you need more space you can take this out fairly easily and fold the seats flat as a drummer I utilize this space all the time underneath the front seats which are sitting on risers there's actually some extra space as well so some great third-party drawer accessories can take advantage of that my accessory recommendation video is linked below then last but not least is the front trunk or front this is added storage over most cars because the model Y is fully electric and it adds a lot of space I use a specially fitted organizer here to keep various things on hand organized and out of the car itself it's very useful but my main complaint here is that it is a manual open and close and is fairly delicate to close you have to latch it gently and now that I've experienced a powered front trunk on other EVS I think this feature should really be on this car I'd use it much more often if it was powered and at the model wise price it really should be powered then comes the interior Teslas are known for simple interiors and the model y takes directly from the model 3 utilizing one Center 15 inch screen to control most of your secondary controls in the car the steering wheel has normal stocks on each side for blinkers initiating wipers brights and shifting as well as scroll wheels for controlling media initiating voice commands and controlling autopilot other than that you have hazard lights and basic window controls but the screen controls the rest after owning this car for a month and owning Teslas in general for a couple years now I'm completely used to it it's a rare occasion that I need to control something on screen while driving and it's difficult to do the UI is very good these days and has improved a lot with software updates in recent years that's one of the great benefits of the model y software updates come regularly bringing new features and Bug fixes throughout ownership also as a quick note the Tesla app is the best vehicle Connected app out there and has tons of great things about it one other benefit of the model y to note before we drive it is that it is the safest car you can buy multiple testing agencies including Euro end cap iihs and Nitsa have either rated the model y with 5 stars in all categories or rated it as the safest vehicle they've ever tested this is crash test safety but Tesla's included autopilot safety systems are very effective at preventing accidents as well it's one piece that people including myself often forget to mention in these cars they're fun to drive but also incredibly safe for some that alone makes it worth the cost so let's take it for a drive and walk through the main features in the model y there's plenty to like and plenty I'd love to see improved in the future so there's a lot to like about the storage and the tech inside the model y but the best part about it is driving it for a vehicle this size I'm not sure what more you could ask for when driving this car it handles great is really tight to the steering wheel and has so much acceleration and so much power whenever you need it for some they see a 0-60 in 4.8 seconds and they say who cares but when you're actually driving and just needing to make an aggressive move or something it's really nice so right here I'm just gonna quickly speed up and it's just right there available and then I'm able to slow down pretty easily because I have one pedal driving one of my biggest complaints when I had a 2020 model y was the ride quality now Tesla has improved this over time slightly in Little Bits over time and now it has gotten to the point where it is really good I have really no complaints about the ride quality here and reportedly Tesla has made a change for a new Comfort suspension since after I bought this model y so this is already great for me rides great I have no complaints about it and apparently they've made it even better now I still have yet to try that out though so I need to try that new suspension out as you can see it's raining right now so Auto wipers are on and you can see how they're functioning actually in practice if I wanted to speed it up I can do this turn it up but I'm just going to keep it on auto so we can see how it's performing overall interior noise when you're driving is pretty good in this car it's gotten a lot better as well over time but I do notice a low Rumble that kind of comes from the back this is a hatchback so you're sitting in the same place as the trunk and there's no real separation there and you do hear low Rumble especially when you're going faster I really hear it on freeways but again let's check out this acceleration right now I'm going 30 and then I can just punch it and here we go it's just really great to have on hand at any time and also really fun one of the best features for me that Tesla added over software update is the ability for the blind spot camera to come up on screen so let's say I'm turning left I signal left and this pops up and not only does it pop up but you can actually choose three different locations on screen where you want this to be by default I like it up here it's most in my view and closest to where I'm looking at the road and it's just really nice another thing you'll see on screen when driving is all these autopilot visualizations now these have gotten a lot better over time and should keep getting better as Tesla's working on their full self driving system but they give you a preview of what those look like and they're actually pretty helpful right here I can see this car in front of me I can see the trash cans I can even see what it thinks is a motorcycle up ahead and you can scroll around if this was helpful for you it sees speed limit signs it sees all the cars driving by me it's really impressive how good it is sometimes the cars are flickering sometimes it's not super accurate so it's not like 100 reliable but it's very helpful and shows you just how much the car is aware of around you now that I'm going to get on the freeway we're going to notice a couple things for one I'll try out autopilot and I'll talk about how that's doing and then some stipulations for that in what I find annoying with it we'll see how great the acceleration is and then we'll also probably hear the low Rumble increase in the back if that comes through as well as just general wind noise so it's great to have this blind spot camera when merging onto the freeway and also great that if I needed to quickly accelerate over here I can do so so with basic concluded autopilot you're just going to get Lane keeping it's going to Auto steer in your lane and you can do it up to 85 miles per hour which is a new change that Tesla has made with their system it actually used to be 90 miles per hour but for me I actually don't see why you would need to go 90 and this system has performed incredibly well we're actually testing it in the rain right now so let's see how it does we're now in full auto steer this is our max speed and we can bump this up you'll notice that right here Auto brights automatically turned on also Auto wipers are automatically on and they're not really wiping enough for me so I'm going to click this and put it onto three but autobright's also turned on and I don't want that to be on because Auto brights are not good in a Tesla just objectively not good they end up flashing cars all the time it's not a good experience especially at night so if I want to turn that off I would normally have to go to lights right here and then it says right here Auto high beam must be enabled while Auto steer is active that is a new change that Tesla has made since they removed radar from their cars and it's frustrating because you actually aren't supposed to be able to turn it off but you actually can you just press the left stock forward and now that disappears so I'm wondering if that's just like a bypass that Tesla doesn't know about and they're actually going to change so I almost don't even want to talk about it but that now has become my muscle memory to go into autopilot it's two presses down on the right stock and one press forward on the left stock to disable auto brights for right now that's kind of the solution I think and it makes this system a lot more usable but if they were to get rid of that and make you be in Auto high beams as it says you will have to be on screen it's definitely a downside of autopilot because Auto high beams are not good so now I'm going to enter into this Lane and there's no auto lane change so at this point if I'm going to enter autopilot I have to then exit autopilot before I can change lanes so I'm going to go into autopilot here and it's doing a good job it hasn't complained about not being able to see anything yet and my windshield wipers are doing a good job as well let's see yep they're on auto and these cannot be turned off when autopilot is active but you can put it on whatever number you want So in theory as long as the windshield wipers are on I can put them on one and that's still considered on for autopilot which is required but obviously right now this is getting a little too much on my windshield so I'm just going to go back to Auto and see what it does sometimes this definitely doesn't keep up though especially if you're behind a car that's throwing a lot of water on you so you want to go to four right there and then if I want to change my following distance to either be okay there was it did tell me that I had to uh take over right there I wasn't sure what that was so that was a random message I'm not sure if that's Rain Road markings but I did need to be fully attentive there and take over the wheel but I'm still in autopilot so if I go a bit faster here like maybe try to get in the 70s I'm starting to hear a little more wind noise but it's actually not too bad even in this car it's not too bad I am talking maybe a tad louder than I would have otherwise but the main thing I can hear is just going over certain bumps like the low Rumble coming from the trunk it's partially something you can't prevent in a hatchback but it's partially something that doesn't happen in other hatchbacks so I wish they could fix that in my experience though if I'm driving on the freeway and listening to music at a decent volume I don't really hear it overall though you can see this is doing a really fantastic job it's definitely the best driver assistance system I've ever experienced autopilot is specifically notable over other systems is because it's not just pre-mapped highways it's any Highway where there are clear markings it can drive for you the one feature I wish that they would add into normal autopilot or let you buy a la carte is auto lane change because if you're on a long road trip you can be using autopilot for a long time but every time you make a lane change you have to exit autopilot signal of course make your lane change and then you have to re-enter autopilot and turn off auto brights boom boom boom really not a big deal at all and you definitely get used to it but it is very nice to just be able to signal and the car changes lanes for you for me the model Y in particular is the best of both worlds so it's really great to drive around and really great to maneuver but at the same time you can just go into autopilot at any time my one main complaint with the model y though is with visibility you have glass everywhere you have cameras everywhere the autopilot system is seeing everything you have these visualizations you have blind spot cameras you can bring this up and see your rear and side cameras but the rear view mirror is just like a tiny sliver you can barely see anything out of that mirror compared with a lot of other cars this has just terrible rear visibility so autopilot is mainly designed for freeways and I think a lot of people think that in that case that's the only place you're going to use it for some people that's totally the case and that totally makes sense but this is just kind of a normal like 40 mile an hour road right here and I can totally go into autopilot just fine the only difference is that it's going to max out this speed 5 above the speed limit but it can drive on these roads just fine which is an improvement over a lot of other systems I do have a signal coming up though so it will see the signal but since I don't have any of the full self-driving options it's not going to stop for the signal unless there's a car there if you've never driven a Tesla or an electric car I highly recommend doing a test drive because feeling what it's like isn't something you can really experience until you drive it this review is I hope very helpful for you but you're not going to really understand what it's like to have just access immediately to instant torque in your foot and have full control over speeding up and slowing down available at any moment with one pedal driving also how this car steers how autopilot Works how a lot of the things function you really need to experience for yourself to truly understand why people are paying for these cars it's not a fluke that the model Y is becoming the best selling car in the world it's a really great vehicle even though there's plenty that can be improved another thing you have to just experience for yourself is the sound system it it's a fantastic sound system in this car it's Tesla's own system so sometimes people freak out about that but it is designed incredibly well I love the sound system in this car coming up here is this patch of really intense rough road where some Roots have broken up the pavement and such and I always drive over this in each car I test to try to see what the suspension is like it's really a great test and in my old model y this was something I would completely avoid it was like violent in that model y in the rivien r1t it's probably the smoothest that I felt it in the model 3 isn't too bad the model S handles it pretty well the ionic 5 actually did a very good job but this new model y also does a pretty good job let's check it out yeah bumpy but definitely not bothersome this used to be such a complaint of mine I have probably a dozen videos where I talked about the ride quality and the model y just being awful compared to other vehicles and that has totally changed I'm really happy to see it so in the car your main functions are pretty much going to be on screen with the latest model wide the screen is very much updated it has a new processor and the refresh rate is fantastic it's one of if not the best screens you can have in a vehicle so your main thing is maps at all times and you can just see how responsive this is it's really really useful so if I want a map somewhere I can just do it here type it in on screen and navigate there and it's using Google Maps integration so it's very very good I've really never had any problems with the integration here it now gives you multiple route options it tells you how long it's going to take to get there and it gives you all your steps along the Route one of the best parts about a Tesla is that you have access to thousands of Tesla superchargers that other EVS currently don't have access to and they're very reliable and all over the place so right here I can just click for Chargers and these are all the Chargers nearby me I can see it on a list or I can see it on a map I have all of these options in Los Angeles and then let's say I'm trying to do a road trip just tons of great supercharger options I believe the way this displays as well is that all the red ones are the ones that I can drive to it knows my range can definitely get me that far and all the ones outside of this that are grayed out is because I would have to charge once before I would make it there so you can see right up here I can get to this one with 53 stalls available in California no other charging Network in California especially has that many stalls it's really great for on the road charging but most of the time you're going to be charging at home and that is what I do the vast majority of the time it's very easy but the rest of the screen functions are pretty basic you have your settings here and this is where you can dial in pretty much anything and you can see again how responsive this screen is you have your main controls here but a lot of this stuff is like you dial it in once it saves to your driver profile which is up here at the top you can see I have a few driver profiles including my name and and once I go into my profile here it's adjusting my seating to my exact seating position it's adjusting my mirrors the steering wheel and all of these various settings that are saved to my profile so while it may seem like wow these controls are on screen while I'm driving the majority of them are things you're never going to be adjusting because you just go into your driver profile and it's linked to your key but if you do need to adjust mirrors that's where you do it you adjust steering wheel here and you can choose options for Sentry mode which is the security system that records with the cameras around the car when there's motion there's options for wipers here so when you're driving you could tap this and bring up wipers but the best way to do that is just going to be to hit the button on the left stock wipers pop up here you can be on auto wipers but if those aren't being reliable enough for you which sometimes they aren't you just press that button and change your adjustment here to whichever setting you want Auto lights are very reliable but Auto brights are not very reliable so you can turn those on and off here or you can do it with the stock as far as Auto brights you'll also notice that when you use the left stock to flash or use your brights and turn them on it brings up light options here so some of these things are on screen but they can be initiated from a stock and then you tap on screen and it's right there in view it's not like while I'm navigating I'm going to have to tap here and then I'm going to have to go here to get my lights or even my wipers I can actually just initiate for them from the stock and here it is climate controls are one thing that you can't initiate from the stock it's all going to be on screen so you press right here and this is how you adjust your vent positioning there's no vents that you can physically move yourself you have to do it on screen but most of the time I'm keeping this on auto and then I am just adjusting the temperature right here so as I'm driving I can just turn the temperature down this is what I use pretty much all the time I'd never really dive into this because again this positioning is saved to my driver profile you can see every time I move it it says saving and save to my driver profile so a lot of people are frustrated they're like I just want vents that I can move but once you dial this in after your first couple days driving the car you never really need to adjust it however if you do want to adjust it in finer detail you can do that here on the this menu and you have a bunch of other options you of course have heated seats which you can now also put in the dock so I have them here because it's getting colder you have your defrosters your heated steering wheel heated windshield wipers HEPA filter which they call bioweapon defense mode you can turn this on for True filtration in the car and then you have keep modes which are very useful if it's blazing hot outside and I'm pumping the AC in my car I can just click keep and then if I run into the store for two minutes it's just keeping that temperature there's also dog mode and Camp mode and then you can also schedule turn on auto heated seats and various things I do wish there were cooled seats but these cars do not have cooled seats yet also all five seats are heated so you can turn on rear heated seats as well from this menu overall when driving that's pretty much all you're going to do so most of the time you're not really diving into menus and such but then you have your media Tesla includes radio Bluetooth streaming Spotify karaoke tune in and title for me I use title so right here it has everything I've been listening to recently it's very responsive and the benefit of title is that you can actually download albums for offline listening so sometimes if I know I'm going somewhere where there's no sell signal that's going to get to the car and streaming is going to cut out I can pre-download an album and it also downloads in Hi-Fi that's one benefit of title over Spotify in a Tesla but your basic controls are up here or you can use the steering wheel with the left scroll wheel play pause by clicking next to previous Track by hitting right or left on the scroll wheel and then you can adjust volume here the dock is completely customizable here so you just tap and hold and then you have all of your options so let's say it's getting warm again in Los Angeles and I don't need my heated seats taking up space here I can just click that and those disappear I can also decide what order I want these apps in or if I want to maybe add my calendar down here and there's just a lot of options and so you can customize it to exactly what you want I'm probably going to add the energy app now that we're getting into winter because I'm really curious about that but overall this is what I keep in my dock I keep my cameras so I can bring those up at any time it's my left and right cameras along with the rear camera I have title Bluetooth with my phone tap that and it's immediately going to be able to play for my phone and then I have arcade right here and it brings you to a menu with theater arcade and toy box so theater has all your video streaming if you're charging somewhere or waiting somewhere in the car and want to watch something arcade has various games which are pretty fun to play in here and then toy box has various fun things one new feature is the energy app and this is just not populated right now for me because I haven't been driving right now I've just been sitting here filming but it tells you what your consumption is for all of these things driving climate battery conditioning elevation everything else and it will tell you after a trip how it was on your consumption versus what the trip prediction was overall that's pretty much everything that I use except Dash cam right here so I can bring up dash cam and look at previous Sentry mode events dash cam events when I was driving see what happened here and why maybe I honked my horn because it will automatically save a clip when you honk your horn you can click through all the cameras and it's just very nice to have my big complaint here is that this still needs work this system is just not very reliable like you scroll and then it Scrolls back and scrubs and then it's jumping kind of all over the place it could definitely improve also on the left here at all times when you're parked you're going to have open front trunk lock and open trunk and then you can also open the charge port there as you saw in my drive there basic autopilot overall functions great I live in Los Angeles though it's populated with many Teslas and Tesla's autopilot and FSD systems work with a neural network that learns from vehicle data sometimes that means that autopilot handles better in areas like this so I've heard many people having rough Phantom braking issues where the car breaks suddenly for no reason when in cruise control or autopilot these are issues to look out for and be aware of I've experienced it in the past with Teslas and it's definitely not fun but I've yet to experience it in this model why I'm very happy to see that I use it almost all the time on the freeway and it's really great to have so far Tesla's removal of radar has not made an impact on my experience with autopilot aside from the annoyances with autobrights that I mentioned for now I can bypass it with the left stock but if Tesla disables this and requires Auto Brides for autopilot it may make it essentially useless at night autobrights really need Improvement the latest feature test and removed from the model y though came right after my car was delivered They removed all of the ultrasonic sensors around the car these sensors were used for parking in short range object detection located mainly on the bumpers now Tesla is dropping these in favor of Tesla Vision which uses the cameras and FSD computer to detect obstacles right now this functionality is limited for model wise Tesla is shipping while Tesla improves the features and software that means that in a new model y delivered without these sensors which are all model wise delivered now Auto Park summon smart summon and park assist are unavailable until a software update fixes them I don't agree with Tesla's approach here and think they should have dropped these sensors once the software matched a model y that has these sensors but that's how Tesla does things that's one thing to keep in mind when buying this car though mainly for those only opting to get included autopilot this will really just impact park assist and your car detecting objects around you when traveling less than five miles per hour the rest of the downgrades come with full self driving regarding the upgrades Tesla sells for autopilot I didn't upgrade anything and this is what I recommend for everyone unless you're specifically wanting to pay to be a future self-drive having beta tester the features Tesla sells for six thousand dollars or fifteen thousand dollars to improve autopilot are definitely not worth the cost for what they delivered today they may be in the future but timelines are consistently pushed back by Elon and Tesla to the point where I recommend scrolling right past these if you were configuring a amount of Y I bought FSD on my original 2020 model Y and it was a complete waste of money besides making a couple videos with it auto lane change is a feature I really wish I still could have though but it's still not worth six thousand dollars to me especially since these software updates are locked to the vehicle and go with it if you sell also nearly all of the features that FSD and enhanced autopilot include are going to be disabled at delivery due to the lack of ultrasonic sensors the release time for that update is in the near future so it's very unclear how long the wait may be for the white interior so far I've had no issues I've put about 2 000 miles on the car and I've heard many people say I should ceramic coat it or wipe it down regularly otherwise jeans would stain it over time thus far I haven't cleaned it at all because I've wanted to see and I haven't noticed any staining I will start wiping it down more regularly though because I want these to last to me the look is worth it there my main complaint with the white interior is that they changed it right before I purchased my model y so the door panels no longer have large white accents it's an especially notable change in the rear and I liked the old look better overall with the build of this car I'm very impressed I've now taken delivery of five different Teslas and this is by far the best one I've received there were no substantial misalignments or imperfections at delivery and I've yet to have any annoying rattles or squeaks compared to my 2020 model y it's a huge upgrade and I'm really happy to see it I'm also very happy to see the suspension upgrade although it appears I missed the Comfort suspension upgrade by a couple weeks and I'm curious to try that the only real issues I've had with the car relate to bugs off and on I have a bug where it will charge during my peak hours this is extremely annoying because it's scheduled to charge at 9 pm when my electric rate Cuts in half but it charges early anyway some days this works correctly others it doesn't I have had a bit more success once I unlinked a third party charge managing app from the car so I'm hoping that is the fix then for software on screen I wish there was a way to relaunch apps without having to reboot the whole vehicle I regularly use title and now I have an issue where it plays a millisecond of a random part of the song right when the next track starts on an album this happens about half the time so it's really jarring and it sounds like a CD skipping every time the song starts here's a clip let me test the bug and something that will make me use my phone to listen to music sometimes for functionality this is my favorite vehicle and I understand why it's getting so popular it's a great shape for cargo space but also very fun and easy to get around in certain recent additions like the cargo cover are also great to see I like being able to use it as a shelf when loading things in or out of my car I'm really impressed with this 2022 model Y and I'll be sure to keep you posted on any future issues I may have or staining I may have with the white seats hopefully the software bugs I have can be fixed too so make sure you're subscribed to see updates about all of that in the meantime if you want to see my full review of the rivian r1t after one month you can check out that video linked up here or in the description below thanks so much for watching and I'll see you on the next one
