today we're getting into the latest Tesla news including what Tesla announced it investor day the new model y in the works big cyber truck updates and more so let's get into it [Music] first up today Tesla has officially begun the process of opening their supercharger Network to other EVS in the United States this is something that has been a long time coming with Tesla talking about opening their Network for a very long time it was unclear how they'd go about this simply from a connector perspective but recent leaks showed us that their magic dock would add a CCS adapter to their superchargers and that would unlock when initiated from the Tesla app to charge another EV now Tesla has opened first Chargers and added the option to charge a non-tesla at a supercharger within the app they first announced it with a tweet saying select superchargers in the US are now open to other EVs and they shared a video of the process of just how easy it is you select the Chargers site choose your stall unlock the CCS adapter plug-in and charge your status is updated live in the app and when you finish charging you have a charging summary there are very few locations open so far but plenty of owners have already been seeking them out to give them a try as of right now I see two in Northern California and five or so available in the New York area around where Tesla makes the are superchargers they are definitely taking it slow and have to install the new charger type or retrofit this magic dock on existing superchargers so that adds to this process that said the process looks pretty fantastic here's a video Tesla owner's Silicon Valley posted charging an F-150 Lightning at a supercharger it's just as easy as shown online they select the site grab the adapter seamlessly out of the charger plug in and the lightning is charging within a few seconds if you have experience with third-party Chargers you'll see pretty quickly that this is a game changer they have managed to make charging a different EV nearly as plug and charge as charging a Tesla is at a supercharger here's MKBHD testing out supercharging his rivion r1t and here's another rivian owner charging as well Tesla will be in the process of opening more superchargers to all EVS throughout this year and next and I can't wait to see how this goes it should make any EV far more viable to own all while Tesla continues rapidly expanding their Network exclusive to Teslas they ultimately plan to open 7 500 Chargers by the end of 2024 to to all EVS while this is really great news it does point to two things for one Tesla is giving up an advantage here how much of an impact it will have could be argued since they are building so many charging stations each week but it will change things the great supercharger experience Tesla owners are used to is going to change and the decision of buying a Tesla versus another EB won't fully involve the fact that it's stressful to road trip in another Eevee and Easy in a Tesla Tesla will be making it easier for all EVS but there will be congestion the other thing is that while this is exciting it's already going to create problems with EVS having charge ports at different locations Tesla superchargers have a specifically short cable length designed to reach the back left of their cars when backed in while this F-150 Lightning video is exciting to see what's actually happening here is that this lightning is taking up two charging stalls it has to pull forward for the charger to reach and this charging cable is actually meant for a Tesla that would back into the spot left of this now if a Tesla pulls into that spot it's a dead spot with the charging cable that they're supposed to use being used by the Ford to its right if that owner tries to take the cable from the next stall over it won't reach their Tesla charge port also on the other side of this Ford is a stall that can't be used by a Tesla the same is the case when MKBHD was charging his rivian and another customer was charging a lucid air really really awesome to see and not creating any problems since they are the only ones charging there in this video but once other customers arrive it will cause an issue and these cars could each be taking up two charging Spots I'm really curious to see how this specifically pans out as Tesla opens their Chargers it might be somewhat of a free-for-all at these Chargers open to other EVs and Tesla owners will end up arriving at a station that says there's availability only to find they'd need an EV with a charge port on the front in order to charge many other EVS are still scaling and Tesla has a huge lead on other companies in terms of numbers of EVS on the road in the US so I'm curious to see if they just don't change a thing and just wait for other automakers to move their charge port Tesla is likely going to have by far the best charging Network so automakers may just move the charge port so these issues are avoided we'll have to wait and see either way this is a big moment for electrification and will make a significant impact for the viability of owning any EV next up today we have a bunch of cyber truck and model Y updates first for the model y a Tesla's investor day they had both the Quicksilver and midnight cherry red options on display for the time being these are exclusively made in Berlin but the fact that they are on display at Tesla's event in the US could signal that they may be bringing these to the U.S soon as of now they still aren't available to buy here here's some great drone shots of the vehicles on display along with the Tesla semi and Tesla's whole current lineup that was on display but around the same time we saw these photos a new report from Reuters came out saying Tesla is working on a refreshed version of the model y we've yet to see any proper Refresh on the model y since its release in early 2020 and this report says that Tesla is working on it with the code name Juniper according to Reuters quote the changes to the model y codenamed project Juniper at Tesla involved the exterior and interior of the crossover electric vehicle with a Target of starting production in 2024 there have been heavy rumors about Tesla launching a new project Highland model 3 and some are speculating that the advances that new updated platform brings could be what Tesla is looking to add to the model y by 2024. one reason for the delay there would be the significant production pipeline they can't interrupt on the model y quote with Highland Tesla is aiming to cut production costs and boost the appeal of an electric sedan that first went on sale in 2017 people involved in the project have said there will also be changes to the exterior and powertrain performance with a focus on production efficiency reportedly Tesla has asked suppliers for quotes for the revamped Juniper model Y and plans for production on October of 2024. that's still a ways off but definitely adds some curiosity as to the current model y plans Tesla hasn't even fully introduced the structural Pac 4680 model y yet and they may already be looking at changes big enough to be considered a revamp Reuters has mixed reliability with their Tesla rumors so take this with a grain of salt but it's something we'll be looking out for over the next year it's seems it would be after the introduction of the Cyber truck of which Tesla had the latest on display at investor day Tesla's investor day included the presentation which we'll get into but also had a lot on display here's a great video of the latest cyber truck beta prototype on display posted by Tesla daily there's a lot to see but this prototype has the full gigantic windshield wiper and triangular side mirrors we've assumed are the latest updates outside as well the truck has an updated black plastic bed changed from the original stainless steel and it seems the bed itself is really coming together in its production form eliminating a lot of the incredibly sharp angles it used to have other things to notice on the outside of the Cyber truck are the return of the wheel covers from the original prototype the hardware 4.0 cameras and according to Sandy Monroe one of the largest air suspension systems he has ever seen on top of the truck we can also see roof rack slots for the first time and details like this are what point to it really having the details of a production truck there's also very clearly a front camera this could be part of the hardware 4.0 sensor Suite or simply a front camera as is commonly accessible on trucks of this size it helps with visibility and off-roading among other things most of the exterior updates just show that they actually plan to make this thing but the interior brings the biggest changes up front we can see updated seats center console Dash and an entirely new yoke this yoke is essentially a slightly squared off steering wheel and might show that Tesla is finding a wheel to be a necessity for a big truck in this prototype there is no instrument cluster display which is a little disappointing to see but it does have a large Center touch screen we assume will be still 17 inches that might even be passenger lumbar support that can be adjusted on the passenger seat also we can see the Cyber truck riding on the door sill right below the seat the interior has various trim changes but additionally we can see a rear screen this is likely the same screen taken from the model S and x and it's something we haven't seen on this truck before it also appears the rear seats have the ability to fold up for more space in the rear while those seats can fold up it appears that Tesla has gotten rid of the Center bench seat in the front of the Cyber truck the updated center console with wireless charger embedded seems completely fixed I guess this is ultimately a safety decision as well as a manufacturing Simplicity decision this angle really shows how high the trim goes on the truck in the rear with the base of the window coming in at about shoulder height pretty crazy to see but might feel different in person overall with this cyber truck prototype we can see a lot of small tweaks and some notable ones like the updated squared off wheel instead of a yoke but the big takeaway is that it's actually refined and includes things cars actually need for production it's a good sign for cyber truck production this year leading up to investor day rumors swirled wildly as to what Tesla would announce we knew Elon Musk would unveil master plan part 3 and we were expecting that to either just involve Tesla talking about massive scale or Tesla fully unveiling what their future 25 000 EV will look like what Hardware 4.0 is or what the project Highland model 3 is here's what happened at the event itself the event started by confirming that the original invite was indeed a bunch of Tesla bodies per usual the event started late with Elon himself even tweeting the big surprise that they were running late the first person out was Zach kirkhorn which is Tesla's CFO and he talked about how they're going to talk about macro and then micro for their future of Master Plan part 3. then Elon and Drew baglino came out to talk about what master plan part 3 is as a whole overall they're laying out what they say is a clear path to a fully sustainable future Earth Elon said that most people he talks to that are pretty smart do not think this is possible but it definitely is they went very in depth on how dirty energy is today and how clean it can be in the future and exactly how many materials how many batteries are needed for this they said they'll need 240 terawatt hours of battery energy storage 30 terawatts of Renewable Power 10 trillion dollars of manufacturing investment one half of the energy required today since electric energy is way more efficient less than 0.2 percent of land area is actually required on Earth because solar is very efficient that 10 trillion dollars is about 10 percent of the 2022 world GDP and there's zero insurmountable resource challenges overall it requires less mining than the current economy does the main five areas they're focusing on are making a renewable grid so that is with home solar and such then of course switching to electric vehicles then switching to heat pumps high temp heat delivery and hydrogen for those situations and sustainably fueled planes and boats they talked about how much this is already changing and how big it will be in the future and then they showed a slide here of what that looks like for their vehicles they showed how many vehicles they've sold in each of these categories and how many they expect and then above the Cyber truck it looks like this might be a Tesla van this is a product Elon has talked about for a while and Tesla has not unveiled we likely won't hear about until after the Cyber truck is released but it looks like they're definitely teasing another new vehicle there in the same category as the Cyber truck and it's bigger this is almost a guarantee that this is a cyber van that they are talking about making in the future and then of course the other covered up car is their next Generation vehicle which they went in depth on they talked for a while about what sustainable energy looks like and how much is going to be required and how it's not actually as daunting as many people expect it will take a lot of work but it's definitely possible and their optimism isn't just optimism for the sake of being optimistic they're using actual physics and calculations and they're planning to release the details of all their calculations online Elon finished by saying the Earth can move to sustainable energy and it will do so in your lifetime up next was Franz and Lars who head up the engineering team for Tesla's vehicle design they talked about how a small team at Tesla allowed them to be design focused early on they would design then engineer then work on manufacturing but in order to scale they have to do better than this now with things like the model 3 they combine design engineering manufacturing and such altogether but then when they ran into there they created Tesla's model 3 production hell is that they automated the manufacturing process it actually wasn't originally designed for that it was designed for manual assembly so it was tough now they know how to improve on this and the Cyber truck started with the manufacturing side the materials dictated the design of the truck they had to rethink the factory footprint and they don't stamp or paint these trucks at all the end result of the truck is still Dynamic and has all the functionality you expect and fronds reiterated that it's coming this year with every vehicle they're making improvements and they're making big improvements with the Cyber truck but for their next Generation vehicle they will be combining design engineering manufacturing and automation at the same time and all of the people working on these systems are in the same room together they had a really great illustration of the difference between their current assembly process that is the manufacturing process for all vehicles and then where they plan to head in the future they showed this on a Model y but they very much reiterated that that's not how they're going to build a model y it's how they're going to build their next Generation vehicle which they can't show yet Franz specifically said he would love to show us the vehicle today but that will be for a later date so that sealed that we're not seeing the 25 000 Tesla at that event next up was Colin Campbell talking about their powertrain and how they've made various advancements there and where they plan to go in the future they've already made the model 3 powertrain 20 lighter it uses 25 percent less rare earth materials the powertrain Factory is 75 smaller and it's 65 percent cheaper than before since its original introduction in 2017 and they've made no compromises that vertical integration is what makes it possible but their next Drive Unit will be even more scalable they said that this is better than anyone else from what they can tell this Drive Unit as well we use no rare earth materials whatsoever which is a big change next they talked about the electronic architecture and what they're optimizing there essentially they're designing their own controllers more and more with each car the Cyber truck will have more than any of their previous cars and this next-gen vehicle platform will have 100 of their own controllers which gives them a lot more flexibility with that design and the software side of things there in the future for the Cyber truck and Beyond they're moving away from a 12 volt battery to a 48 volt architecture on the software side they're always making tons of improvements and updates and doing lots of Fleet learning they also learn from the fleet as to how they're driving their cars for future battery pack optimization to know how much people actually need one example they talked about with Fleet learning is that they've made a roadmap for predictive air suspension for the model S and X this is learned from the fleet and has created a map now a very complicated one that senses when other customers needed to have their air suspension higher and then the next customer to hit that will have it automatically adjusted essentially they've been building the foundations of the autonomous Fleet Management System they plan for with their Robo taxi this whole time they then talked more about FSD which we've heard a lot about and they talked about how that fits into a sustainable future especially because cars are just sitting there idly when they're not being used and then Elon came out again for Optimus updates they talked about how they have multiple prototypes of this Tesla bot and they're working on the arms and legs and the Prototype that couldn't walk at the last event is shown here walking so they're definitely making big improvements in a short amount of time then they talked about charging and their huge lead there they already make 90 nine percent of road trips possible they do 1.5 million weekly supercharging sessions and they have 99.9 site level uptime that's incredibly impressive and blows the competition out of the water when it comes to a charging Network they've also reduced cost making it 20 to 70 percent cheaper than others for them to deploy their superchargers they also pre-build their superchargers which saves a lot of deployment time and cost and they're improving their trip planner for efficient routing right now it's routing you automatically to a less busy supercharger but in the future it's also going to take into account all the people that are also routing to superchargers they said essentially they want to make it an air traffic control for electric vehicle charging so that there's never a weight and then of course they talked about how they're ready to serve all vehicles by opening up their supercharger Network in Europe they've opened 50 percent of their superchargers they've started opening them in Asia Pacific and yesterday they opened their first 10 in the US what I talked about earlier with cable link may be something they're answering here because they talked about how their fourth gen super charger stalls are not a huge thing to talk about but they're starting to install them in Europe and they have longer charging cables those longer cables are specifically to support electric cars that have a charge port located at a different location long term that might be how Tesla is going to fix this next Tesla talked about the supply chain and all the optimization that they're planning on there they talked about how they got through various supply chain difficulties that interrupted other people but Tesla grew and how they can apply that knowledge for the future basically everything is about efficiency and the easiest way to scale which always involves simplicity so next they talked about manufacturing it's all about making cars faster and right now they have four factories with over 65 000 manufacturing employees they now do in-house construction for their factories and they're celebrating that day their 4 millionth vehicle built basically we're seeing exponential growth in their scaling because it took them 12 years to make their first 1 million cars 18 months to make their second million 11 months for their third million and less than seven months for their fourth million it should be even quicker for for their fifth they also detailed how they're getting into lithium refining and showed a render of their Corpus Christi facility there on the energy side they have some new products that they're planning to announce in 2023 and they're also building Mega packs faster and planning for virtual power plant growth on the Tesla electric side in Texas where they already provide this service they're now going to start offering in July a service that offers home charging for thirty dollars a month it would be unlimited overnight home charging because they're able to utilize the extra wind power that happens in Texas overnight and Supply it to test the customers with Tesla electric also for Tesla electric that is just the beginning and we can definitely see a big path for that in the future they finished out the event with a q a and started that by talking about their New Mexico Factory which they officially announced finally this Factory has been rumored for a long time and Tesla confirmed that they'll be building their next-gen vehicle platform at this new Factory near Monterey in Mexico it will be supplemental to their other factories which will all continue to grow and they'll build their next-gen vehicle platform form at multiple factories a few small details were that bi-directional charging wasn't a priority for them in the past but they are working on it possibly coming to their vehicles in the coming years but Elon said he doesn't think many people will use it because it doesn't actually make sense as for the number of different models Tesla will make he said at Max they see themselves making about 10 different models he said it will be a lot like smartphones where there used to be a ton and now there's only a few we'll see the same thing with cars and this is something I've suspected for a while coming from not just Tesla but all brands trying to simplify manufacturing and bring down costs on electric cars one last point was from Lars who said that their next-gen vehicle platform is not just one vehicle but multiple Vehicles that's definitely good to hear because it hopefully means it's not just a robo taxi and it includes a few different options there overall it was a very interesting event but it was definitely an investor day it was definitely something where they're talking about future things and what they're working on and it's very impressive but they didn't actually announce that car or show us what it looks like I'm a little worried that their future vehicle platform is going to be exclusive a robo taxi and I'm not sure the FSD software can keep up with the rate of advancement they're doing on the engineering side but they are approaching this future vehicle from every possible angle to reduce cost to where it will actually sustainably be able to be that cost overall I'm excited after this event but mostly just excited that they talked about the Cyber truck showed us an updated prototype that looks really impressive and reiterated that that will be coming later this year and then of course the announcement of Tesla's next gigafactory in Mexico that's all the latest Tesla news for today so in the meantime if you want to see the latest way that Tesla is beating the competition you can check out that video linked up here or in the description below thanks so much for watching and I'll see you on the next one
