welcome to corporals corner today the rules have changed and so is my job site location I'm working in a city so today I want to talk about my urban get home bag so stick around back in August we shot a video on the get me home back now a get home bag is basically designed to do just that to get you home once you're there you can reunite with your friends family loved ones etc and make that critical choice or decision of should I stay or should I go bug in or bug out now at the end of that video I mentioned that this was only one version of the get home bag that I carry and that several factors weren't involved in creating a kit vectors like climate terrain and location location meaning where am I currently at versus where I need to be I might work in the desert but live in the mountains do I want to pack just for the desert or just for the mountains after that transition in between how many days does it take to get there things like that now before we get started I want to go ahead and get the methodology out or my mindset that I use when I create a kit I look at three things one the core of my kit the items that will be in every single kit or a foundation that can build on number two redundancies multiples of items that I feel are important and number three health and comfort items things like food sleep systems hygiene gear basically items that are designed to make your life easier wire out in the field or on the road so let's go ahead and kick this off and talk about that pack that I currently carry now that pack right there is a discontinued model from the hidden woodsman he's currently working on new ideas so what I'll do is I'll post a link in the description box to his website as well as YouTube channel and I suggest that you go back and check on it periodically and see was coming up with it's well worth the money trust me the important takeaway is find a pack that works for you that's comfortable and that will carry the items that you need now I mentioned that the rules have changed I'm currently in a desert in a cramped City and luckily only live ten miles from my place of business so I've had this discussion with people I've heard some of them say well ten miles that's three hours walk I'll be home in time for beer and pizza I don't need any gear well to me that mindset couldn't be the farthest from the truth and that could get you killed and here's why imagine ten miles in a burned-out city that's just been rocked by a natural or man-made disaster you got streets or avenues that are choked by fire flames people injured people abandoned vehicles injured animals EMS trying to rescue people dust chemicals depending on what's burning is it the smartest idea to pop on or struck the i-10 link up to the i-17 and be home in time for beer and pizza probably not now we use love our skills in the field and there's something called a 90 degree offset I'm here I need to be here there's a river lake stream swamp something right here I can't cross it so I get to perform a series of 90-degree offsets using a compass to get around that obstacle to get back up where I need to be the same is true for a city depending on the detours I have to take that ten miles could become 20 25 even 30 and in my city I have mountains in the center of my city Malins on the outskirts of the city using the streets just like a compass I may need to detour around those obstacles to get to my house so just like last time what I've done here is I try to create a kit that's using common sense that will function just as well in an urban environment as well as the field because here's why what if I go through this nightmare of ten miles that becomes 30 I get to my house to find out that my friends family loved ones are no longer among the living and my house has been destroyed at least I have my kit and I'll be in conveniently camping for a day or two why I can collect my thoughts pull myself together pick up my pack and March on that's reality and that's the mindset so with that let's go ahead and kick this off and talk about the core of my kit the 10 C's of survivability what you see in front of you right here are the 10 C's of survivability along with their redundancies meaning multiples of certain items that I feel are important so let's go ahead and kick this off in no particular order we'll just move left to right top to bottom and we'll start with our stainless steel bottles these are two stainless steel widemouth bottles ones that Nalgene ones Klean Kanteen why stainless steel well once I collect water and let's say it's from a questionable source I need to disinfect that water worst case I have to boil that water I want to boil on a stainless steel container not a plastic one now before I even step off from my ten to thirty mile trek home I'm gonna drink one these bad boys I want to be hydrated I wanna be super hydrated why because I can where I work at there's several water refueling stations all I got to do is walk up to one refill my bottles and I'm good to go you I'm gonna move on to cutting tools primary is gonna be a moral bushcraft black again I want this kit to be versatile for a field and urban environment followed by Leatherman super tool 300 once again urban environment these things are priceless last but not least my Swiss Army knife one-handed trekker non-serrated it's appeared in several of my videos so you know that for me this is priceless as well sharpening stone dealer's choice pick the one that works for you this happens to be a DC 4 we're gonna move on to combustion devices you see the redundancies for me primary first time every time bic lighter so i have three of them redundancies followed by a magnifying lens or sun lens I'm gonna pick one with at least five times and nitrification why I'm in the desert the Sun is free and last but not least as far as combustion devices Farah cm rod half inch by six strike it I'm guaranteed spark next is cordage number 36 Bank line on this plastic Dell I have about 200 feet there's no limit to what you can do with this we're gonna move on to our cover element a military-grade poncho where I'm currently working at in the desert nobody cares if you have camouflage or khakis or cargo pants there's also mountains in the serra my city there's filled trees and mountains on the outskirts of my city again I want this kit to be versatile Melchior a great poncho I can drape over my body and use it as a poncho there's also large enough to go over my pack and cover my gear I can use it for a shelter system as a plough point or even the lean-to and worst case an a-frame you and now for the redundancies we have three 55-gallon drum liners these are worth their weight in gold and the reason why I say that is because there's no limit of things you can do with this the basic things are out the bat is I can make a mattress with these out in the field I would use leaves debris ferns etc stuff that bag full and lay on it and it will prevent conduction meaning secondly the heat from your body with contact from the ground so in a urban environment worst-case I have to sleep in an alley or in a burned-out building or something of that nature what can i stuff this with newspaper magazines shredded cardboard shredded paper I'm not beyond dumpster diving if it means I'm gonna go home see my family can also use it for improvised rainwater collection water proofing etc next we have tincture of iodine 2% this is more of redundancy it's not one of the 10 C's however it goes along with the 10 C's I have water collection I want an alternate way to disinfect that water between 5 to 10 drops of tincture of iodine 2% into one US Court wait 30 minutes you're good to go you one two three four five what else can I do with this I can treat wounds so just because of that it's multi-use item I'm going to carry it moving on to our compass this is a Suunto mc2 as a signal mirror as well as an additional Sun lens or magnifying lens right there followed by a Ranger beads or pacing beads now I have this again I want a kit that's versatile I can function in an urban environment as well as a field imagine this or if it trapped on a rooftop of a building and you can't get out you might want to signal somebody I can also use that mirror to look for ticks or bugs while I'm in the field pacing beads or Ranger beads I mentioned this ten miles 20 miles 30 miles walking back to my house do I want to guess how far I've walked or do I want to know how far I've walked that's what these come in my go ahead and Schiphol of this item right here we'll come back to this want to talk about the last three C's to 100% 2x2 cotton cloth bandanas one-inch roll of cargo tape or gorilla brand duct tape and a number 10 sail needle or canvas needle got that tape to my knife sheath right here these items right here are mainly for gear repair I can take my number 36 bank line unravel it feed it through the eye right here I could sew up gear I can sew up clothes cargo tape I can make it improvise bandage out of this I can repair my gear I can tear pieces off and roll it up light it on fire and it will burn for 20 or 30 seconds and help me get a damp fire started the meaning twigs are damp they're wet this will burn long enough I can try to dry off that tinder and get it started the to 100 percent cotton cloth bandanas I'm in an urban environment I'm in a desert environment dust is blowing around smokes blowing around I can wet one of these tied around my face I can place it over my head keep the Sun off me I could tie it around my neck and wet it down and cool neck off mic use it for improvised sling there's no limit to things you can do with this this last item we're going to talk about separately it's called a four-way Silcock key SI LLC Ock it's not one of the 10 C's and it's not a redundancy what's involved in water collection so I thought it was important now John McCann of survival resources has been promoting these for years so what I'll do is I'll leave a link in description box to his website cost about 8 bucks it's well worth the money these are designed to give you access to tamper resistant hose bibs that are found on commercial domains what you're doing is you're looking for a small trapdoor got hinges you open it up inside you're going to find a male end now these keys come in quarter-inch 9/32 eleven thirty Seconds and five sixteenths you know for size of the pic pro match up the female end to the male end righty-tighty lefty-loosey turn to the left and out comes the water now whether or not the water is potable that's rolling the dice but what I found is it's basically a garden hose so I think of it like that if you're concerned you can always just affect the water or filter the water moving on to food last time we had three MREs and extra cans of tuna and what we tried to do is stretch out those MREs from three meals to six meals this time is not the case I want something lightweight I'm going 10 miles maximum probably 30 miles I'm gonna get hungry along the way I want food that I can eat and discard the trash as I move my pack will become lighter so here I have anything from two meals to one large meal these individual tuna creations 19 grams of protein Uncle Ben's rice is ready as is I can heat it up and infuse that flavor and make it a little bit softer but if you actually squeeze the package the rice is extremely soft right now and you can just open it up mix the tuna and you're good to go two packages of Ritz crackers each package contains anywhere from 12 to 13 crackers I'm gonna keep the ball rolling here and talk about the Sleep System now I've already mentioned my military-grade poncho as well as the 55-gallon drum liners and what can be done with these the primary purpose of these together would be to create some type of plow point or lean-to worst case an a-frame shelter with a poncho and then go ahead and grab one or two of these and fill in full of leaves or debris or cardboard paper magazines etc and create some type of improvised mat to keep me off of the ground and prevent that conduction from the sucking the heat off my body now the nights are cooler here so what I've chosen was 100% wool bogging or beanie cap trying to retain some of that warmth the last thing I want to talk about is this soul xscape movie truth be known this is the darkest color that I could find but it actually works to my advantage because I mentioned in the beginning of the video I wanted a urban slash field survival kit and worst case I have to skirt the city and sleep out in the field I can use this in conjunction with the camouflage colors and will do just nicely flipside to that say I have to sleep inside of a building I want to be in the darkest corner I could find or even in an alley I want to get in those shadows I don't want something bright saying Here I am come get me but it's reflective meaning it keeps the heat inside it will trap the heat inside it's breathable as well as windproof and water-resistant we're still talking about health and comfort items so let's move to hygiene gear this is an example of what I would carry in an urban environment now keep in mind all of this is optional it can be deleted added to moved around exchanged however you see fit starting left to right talk about the Wet Ones 20 pack several things you can do with that I can wash off a piece of gear a utensil I can wash my feet I can take an improvised shower get the armpits the growing wash my face worst case I have to drop a stinky load in an urban environment or out in the field I have toilet paper right here moving on to hand sanitizer it's 70% now believe it or not this is only effective as long as your hands are clean if they're dirty they got grease on them oil dirt their soiled in any way it will not be a high percent effective along with that hand sanitizer kills bacteria not viruses there's an added bonus for using hand sanitizer in the field [Applause] taking your bic lighter or Pharisee Imran it's actually flammable outstanding so moving on to hand soap this small container cost me about dollar fifty I believe over at Walgreens and they come in different colors it's all I did was unscrew it open it up and I pumped in some hand soap so if I'm out in the field I come across a water source and I just got exposed to something or I want to use my hand sanitizer and be clean I can wash my hands wash my face wash my feet armpits etc keep it my Imola gonna be out there maximum one day this right here is a perfect size for that moving on to vitamin C packs I'm gonna be tired I'll be hiking around in the heat probably helping people maybe somebody's helping me my immune system could be down I might be out there more than one day this is also a multi-use item believe it or not if you treat your water with chlorine bleach or iodine you're gonna get a nasty taste in that water so all you got to do once the waters been treated you've waited 30 minutes break up one of these dump it into your water and it will actually help reduce that foul taste of iodine toothbrush toothpaste again these are optional I might be out there for hours I might be off of 24 hours it all depends deodorant again it's optional the most important piece of gear that you see laid out in front of you right here is this right here an extra pair of socks say I am out there for one day say I'm out there for 12 hours says stop and take a break after 10 hours my feet are covered in sweat they're covered in dirt I had to go through water my feet are just getting nasty I want a fresh pair of socks believe it or not it's a morale booster and it will actually help keep you healthy and all the hygiene gear that you just seen fits inside this bag zip it up and toss it in in my pack the last thing I want to talk about is travel and it's still considered a health and comfort item because can I move around can I get home with just the core of my kit yes but will these items make my travel a lot easier a lot more pleasant most likely on a notebook this is a write in the rain notebook with two number two pencils preferably mechanical pencils a good map this map right here is laminated it's weatherproof I can write on it gives me the streets where I want to go where I'm currently located want to open this up right here there's a mountain ranges that I talked about that are inside my city I go to my legend right here and it shows me hotels resorts museums Indian reservations hospitals medical centers country clubs colleges and government buildings there's a trolley route a light rail and so on and so forth let's talk about water we already mentioned the commercial buildings as an look at this map right here I can see there's a couple canals on here there's even a river very important piece of gear moving on now why do I want gloves we're talking about an urban disaster say I have to climb over a couple cars climb over a wall climb the fence push some kind of hot metal out of the way grab some two by fours move some stuff do I want to get splinters do I want to get burns don't want to get cuts most likely not so pick a pair of good gloves that work for you and keep them with you inside your kit the last few items I want to talk about are considered health and comfort items which means are optional but having them as you'll see are probably more of a necessity the first one is some type of warming layer I mentioned that it is getting cooler at night and it helped keep me warm if I don't want something I can pull from my body zip up with a hood on it so I can pull it over now worst case I don't use this sports intended purpose meaning on my body all I got to do it's rolling from the bottom up reading from the bottom towards the hood tuck it inside that hood and it gives you a football sized improvised pillow to lay your head off the next thing i want to talk about is a porter power now believe it or not these are not all created equal this one right here in the puckett juice I've had it for several years and I'm lucky to get maybe three charges out of it for my cell phone as long as my cell phone is turned off with my cell phone turned on I'm getting probably about maybe one-and-a-half charges so that tells me it's probably time for a new one are you gonna want to use this if you're home in four hours probably not if you're home in a day maybe you will entirely optional and entirely up to you they say I want to talk about cold hard cash now in my previous video I said carried minimum of $100 and I took a lot of flack for them but the one thing that people to understand was even though is 90 miles away there was a lot of wooded or forest areas between two or three different cities so most likely I was going to sleep out in the woods and go into towns and grab bottles of water or can of chili things like that and believe it or not there are some hotels in those areas that were 50 bucks 60 bucks etc so on the worst case I want to get a good night's sleep here's 60 bucks I'm good to go now where I'm currently staying at I'm gonna recommend carrying a minimum of two hundred dollars and where you're at it might be three hundred dollars in small bills and again dealer's choice you want to sleep in a bed that night if the power's out across the city hey don't can't use credit cards here's 100 bucks cash there's a high in 50 bucks cash there you go walk into a store all this meats gonna spoil maybe I can get a discount on it maybe I can get it for free canned food will always be there and get it while it lasts things like that now the very last thing I want to talk about and I touched on it in my previous video and that's firearms in no way am I gonna say to you ever go out buy guns and carry em for me I'm currently in a open carry state along with that I have two or three that's to say several concealed carry permits for most of the states that I pass through but ultimately they're going to need to do what works best for you and your family to protect them and keep them now the biggest thing to take away from this video is the three things in creating the kit what is the core of your kit be the strong foundation to build on what are your redundancies additional gear that you believe is important and lastly health and comfort items that are optional will make your life on the road and out in the field hell of a lot easier think of your comments view support thanks for watching get out in the field have some fun I'll catch you next time [Music]
