Meet Your Parents in Starfield (Kid Stuff Trait)

well I'll be honey we got ourselves a visitor I'll get the coffee brewing oh my god oh you about gave me a heart attack Starfield gives us a few ways in which we can Define our player's backstory the most interactive of which is a trait called kid stuff which allows you to meet your parents in game the downside being that you're also helping to pay for their new life in the form of two percent of your credits being withdrawn from your account once a week early on in the game it seemed to max out at 500 credits a week for me after reaching new Atlantis and taking on the first Quest from constellation you'll get a miscellaneous Quest prompting you to visit them at their home in Pioneer Towers in the city's residential district alternatively you can drop by The Lodge constellations headquarters in the city where Noelle will tell you that your dad dropped by and left a note saying to go see them meeting your parents is fun they're excited you dropped by and they're happy to hear that you're working with constellation they do the stereotypical parent thing of saying they knew you were destined for great things telling you that your room is a mess that kind of stuff constellation is this one of those Candid Camera vids a joke might child is a member of constellation I just knew you were special didn't I always say that that you were meant for great things great things and your room is just a mess although that's how you left it easy honey let the boy catch his breath why don't you settle in you know you're always welcome their apartment acts as another player home of sorts giving you a free bed to use if nothing else after the initial meet and greet with your folks you can listen in other conversations with your mom trying to get your dad to go out more and maybe go dancing they are living in the capital of the United Colonies after all so why not take advantage of all the culture and opportunities that you have here speaking with your dad you'll learn that he's a retired professor and that your mom dreamed of joining constellation when she was a kid your mom tells you that your father can't wait to be a grandfather asking you if you've found that special someone yet I said no since I had just started the game and Sarah Morgan who was my companion at the time even commented on how mothers always have the urge to interfere in their children's love life well now I see that it's true mothers have an irresistible urge to interfere in their children's love life in that same initial visit I got my dad to talk about his father who owned a restaurant on and was best known for his meatloaf he says how his father passed it on to him and offers to pass it down to you I don't know if anything I taught you about cooking stuck but I figure it's time to pass the torch but you got a promise not to share Grandpa's meatloaf recipe with anyone it stays in the family I swear dad's ghost would come back and strike me dead if you did that which you can be a good son and happily take it or you can be kind of a brat about it it doesn't lock an actual recipe that you can make at cooking stations too after that I went about my day moving the main quest forward taking on some Bounty assignments you know typical space things the next time that I made my way back to the lodge I was surprised to find my parents standing in the middle of its main room with Noel looking to me insane that she hopes it's okay that she let them in your dad goes on to say that his friend from the University had an old revolver that used to belong to one of the former chairs of constellation he and his friend then had the piece restored so that you could use it may I present to you sir Malcolm Livingston's personal sidearm all the special modifications just as he left him he was chair of consolation about 50 years ago anyway it's yours the gun in question isn't a revolver but instead shares the model of the old Earth pistol in game which uses 45 caliber ammo that being said it was the first of its kind that I had encountered in the game so far the funny thing is it's clearly not a revolver but I'm pretty sure there are revolvers in Starfield seems like a little bit of a weird oversight I'm wondering if maybe the pistol has changed based on your level when you get it your dad then offers to bring cookies the next time he visits which Noel is very much in favor of Ms Noel would it be all right if I brought cookies next time actually Mr cookies what type I make a mean snickerdoodle yes I um I think that would be hours of gameplay passed and I stopped by constellation again to use their crafting stations Noel stopped me to give me another note for my parents heading back to their apartment your mom starts talking about her grandmother who she says is the only other person in the family like you having a more adventurous Spirit having joined the UC Marines at a pretty young age she gives you Grand Grand's old armor and helmet and just like the meatloaf recipe you can be nice or you can be a dick well I was going through storage and I found her old armor I I think she'd like you to have it you have that same thing you're forging your own path not just letting life toss you this way in that I was nice to my virtual fake parents several quests later I stopped by the lodge again and Noel had another note from them this time your dad's saying that he had big news turns out your dad had a really good night playing poker and won a little bit more than he had anticipated but the big kicker is I won myself a ship a real Starship it's real sweetie we we went to the docks and looked at it and everything well there's no way I'll ever fly it so we had no idea what to do with the damn thing then it came to me you buying new ships can get really pricey so I hadn't bought a whole new ship just yet making this a really great reward it had better power weapons and cargo storage than the frontier the only thing I had to buy was a new missile system as it didn't have one by default the ship itself had two crew slots the same number as the frontier which is fine for now but it does come with its own Brig and weapon cases for display and storage purposes you can tell your parents to sell the ship for the money but they insist that you keep it as a thank you for all that you've done for them they tell you to keep it sell it whatever makes you happy one of the intentions for traits is that they have positives and negatives and often a way to remove them entirely in the case of your parents this means telling them that you can't afford to keep sending them money week after week your parents are very understanding about this but they make it clear that they won't be able to stay in new Atlantis without that Financial contribution from you they go on to say that they won't be upset but if they they have to move it'll be a long time before they get settled anywhere else not for a long while no a move like we're talking takes time soon as we get settled we'd love to have you over but it could take a long long time it's really heavily implied here that you won't see them again for the rest of the game if you cut them off from that Weekly allowance I find that different miscellaneous quests tend to pay at least 1800 credits with a lot of main quests paying significantly more to me the 500 credits a week just to have these fun little interactions to get free meatloaf recipes armor and weapons is very much worth it to me the ship alone likely would have cost over a hundred thousand credits if you were to buy something similar at one of the shipyards so I've already more than profited from having my parents as a trade the interactions with your parents feel really sweet and there's way more of them than I expected I'm not even that far into the game so I wouldn't be surprised if there's even more beyond the ones that I've already seen I feel like the positives really outweigh the negatives in this case you get your money back and then some last time we took a look at the adoring fan trade where you can get rid of him either through a persuasion check or through violently murdering him and for science I thought to test this out with our parents in game you can't kill them you can't hurt them any attacks go right through them so no no patricide sorry to anyone
