Martin Short Impersonates Bette Davis and She's Not a Fan - Carson Tonight Show

[Applause] now my next guest my next guest is a very talented actor and comedian you've seen marty in television both second city uh tv nbc's saturday night live his movies include three amigos and inner space this is his first time on the tonight show with us would you welcome martin short thank you my humble little set here thank you and what a pleasure to meet you thank you thank you you're wonderful that was great you know i i am so excited to be here and i i brought you a little gift i brought you a bottle of champagne but [Laughter] but if you can do betty and i a favor maybe drink it on the way yes i will and you won't want to go with me either no no i'll i'll run along the people who just joined us are not going to know what we're talking about refer back to the early part of the show and figure it out because it may be believed yeah good to see you good to see you you had the nerve to come out and do her right away huh i know well i'm the tremendous fan of this uh young ladies here and of course ed i've worked with uh you're probably thinking which star search was that but [Laughter] no let's see was that but no that was with the david steinberg show in toronto ed was up there it's right on yeah dude david david david and his show you know john it was amazing to me about having ed we wanted to have doc oh we didn't have doctor john but [Applause] [Music] he does have a speech pattern oh my goodness from canada too yeah winnipeg and you're from canada yeah hamilton ontario ontario you have a great year for that did you start as fooling around school when you're very young picking up on impressions i use yeah well you know i guess it is true that you really do uh impersonate the people that you admire yeah i mean you because you just watched them it's the only possible way that you would uh when when i used to jerry lewis as a kid i used to do a very high you know kind of high well i didn't know but then i noticed that as jerry got older there was a kind of an attitude and i found it was easier if you did him you know if you imagine that you were sucking on a lozenge i don't know why it's not that he does it laws but it's like so if you if you just have an imaginary lozenge yeah john how are you doing it's good betty hello wow but [Laughter] uh on saturday night live yes but i did it as nelson happened nelson we did a piece called lifestyles of the relatives of the rich and famous and i will get to that soon yeah yeah and i played uh catherine's third maternal cousin nelson hepburn well there's a hot dog vendor in central park and uh i would work there every day except sundays he'd say sundays are mine they always were he'd say i i get up in the morning i sleep late and i read all the papers and i have a then a huge bowl of bran the next few hours i've been disposed and i phoned friends [Laughter] did you ever heard it is flattering generally yeah to be to be a mimic you know or impersonated yeah do you ever hear from anybody that you do who maybe i know for a while um sammy davis did not like billy crystal's impression of him at first i think he began to like it but he didn't care for it i i think that it's um there's certain people you know you you you can't help if you're if you're gonna do something you really have to do all the the the different angles of them you know and and uh but i have not had you know i do robin williams and robin's a friend and you know i thought he might be a little funny because it was all based on energy and oh what a one oh it's wonderful to be there oh here sounds like there there sounds like your hair oh what a wonderful sunset don't touch that hair mary you don't know aspen you know and uh and it's so fast then he just kind of goes along and then goes oh look at that oh there's dark like a nurse no it's not my arm know it's that wild stream of consciousness he's so great he's so great god yeah he was on about a couple of weeks ago yeah and absolutely got on a roll you know and it was just like the things were clicking on and off and i don't think he knew half the time what he was going to do when he got up it started and just would yeah well sometimes you uh you know i in in the when i once met richard burton and burton was huge right idle to me and i was very nervous he was doing camelot and i had a tendency to always be tongue-tied goofball basically when i would meet celebrities that i admired and so i decided that i was really going to like be intelligent and plan what i was going to say and i went backstage after camelot and i said mr burton i just want to say to you that you are an enormous presence on the stage and not for one second did i feel that i was watching a movie star i thought i was watching king arthur and i thought he would then say thank you and move on to the next person but he didn't he'd talk to me like a real person but did you not find the reverb was somewhat distracting did not bother you with booming off the back speaker did not bother you at all and i said to him thank you hey that was it that's all you planned right and then he looked at me and said and who are you never looked back yeah it's it's difficult have you ever tried to get somebody you can't quite nail there are elusive people robin is not easy i mean because his voice is not easy you know it's an attitude more than it is the voice some people i mean you would be impossible to me rich little does you and it's amazing i i don't i don't know they're particularly good or not i did i tried to do paul simon once and it you know it was just he was like i sure like playing in africa it's not like doug henning you know the power of illusion and then i do uh okay yeah big call for that magic is illusion an illusion it can be magical that means i sound that intelligent but then i'm not that individual no i i uh and jamie farr came across like before yeah i'm a lover not a fighter but that's like groucho marx so there's no no and lucy i tried but i could only get that gary give me my clutch bag hurry you know what i'm saying is you know you have to have more nuance you can't take that in the road no not really gary cooper i only have three words yep forget it he's dead that's not enough yeah that's not good i have been walking on ball fields for 16 years remember that great speech yes that's my favorite what was the character it was ed grimley what is that a composite or a little this little that oh it was just it was just uh a character kind of a spirit a very optimistic spirit very excited to be here i must say oh give me a break being on the tonight show with johnny carson i suppose that doesn't make me mental i'm outside if i had known you were here you're you're so decent i suppose your movies aren't the best in the world give me a break pleasure to meet you hi ed talk to victoria she's living with me now what are you doing reckless now slide right now i have no real oh no no i'll just do anybody who haven't we covered you're working on anything anybody uh let's see um do me do i do you yes well i mean you aren't that easy to do then we'll skip it i just wanted to know yeah okay [Laughter] then there's jerry's laugh of course which i love which is like a plum pudding bubbling it's just oh lozenge put it there now when you do you've got children right yes when they see their father acting like this does it just does it does that disturb them do they understand i am i'm trying this is what you do for a long time i'm teaching my comedy children what did i say you're teaching your children comedy or your comedy children both those things that's what i do washed no i am i'm trying to create a comedy dinosaur which wouldn't then fight in violence no i'm i'm teaching a comedy dynasty and you know not since the winds that we had and barely there but i'm teaching my daughter uh i've taught her that when she for example when she falls down she must wait for her laughs she can't just get up you know of course and i've taught her how to do uh win an oscar she just i've taught her with a barbie doll truthfully i just she just holds the barbie doll and i've tried to go oh baby now i don't know if that's i don't know it might play who knows we'll be back i guess the moment after this tell him the thing you
