Died on his birthday. Not that it makes it any more tragic but his wife saying that hit me.
That video really hit home, but when they were talking to the family they revealed that he didn't know how to swim. Pretty sad all around considering their family had just immigrated to Australia a week earlier with his wife and 3 kids and died within a week of arriving.
Tides are scary man.
A few beaches in Rhoads Island have these super strong tides that will slowly pull you away from the beach for like 60 seconds, they you realize you can barley touch, and your sliding across the sand before a wave picks you up and you can lo longer touch, then you look back and realize, oh, Im 100 yards from the shore and only getting further.... hmmm.
If you cant swim its just death. Even if you can poeple try and swim in, get tired and then drown.
18 year old having to have a calm conversation with a 16 year old, all while knowing quite likely his father is dead.
Very sad. I wonder how it would have impacted the man's chances if they'd sent up one of those widely available quadcopter drones like the Phantom right away to give them an eagle's eye view of the water. Some of those things have really good cameras, and who knows what difference a trained operator might have made.
That show is so weird to me, because thereβs 20,000 more isolated beaches in Oz, many of them more treacherous than Bondi (rips, rocks, etc). And this is perhaps the most patrolled one in the country.
I guess itβs a numbers game - just more people swim there.
If you don't know how to swim stay out of the water, especially if it's deep enough that it's up to your stomach.
If you want to get in the water learn how to swim first, otherwise there's a great chance of a needless death.
I remember once we'd gone to the beach..we were high up on the rocks with a good vantage of the beach far from the water..it was a usual Sunday crowd...couple of middle aged men in the water near a rock formation , families out for a walk..we were up to our own business drinking beers and talking when suddenly we heard shouting from the group in the water..people rushed over..half of them in panic and the other in disbelief as to what was happening...we all sobered up pretty fast as the mood grew tense.. people brought up a raft a a search party was started for the man who apparently had got caught up in an undercurrent under the rocks and swept away..they couldn't find him..we left after it got dark and I still don't know what happened..but that stuck with me for a while as to how quickly things can go wrong
Wow. Super interesting.
I live near a beach with very strong currents. That shit is terrifying to me.
