We have an armed, barricaded subject in a house up north. District officers went to survey-- arrest him on a warrant, and he barricaded himself inside the house. [siren wailing] Apparently, he shouted at the officers, threatening a gunfight. The thing is, he's not alone. We think that there's up to three other people in there with him. If they're armed, things could really take a turn for the worse. [man over radio] In the basement. We got five out back right now. They're adults? They are all adults. Residence in question is a gray, two-story residential structure. I do not know about fencing, unknown about dogs, unknown about weapons. Any type of situation where they're manufacturing methamphetamine poses a whole bunch of significant risks. The chemicals and manufacturing process that are involved are volatile and explosive. [siren wailing] (Carmody) They're going to set up-- In a situation like this, where there's a chance for explosives, we're going to need more cover, and that's why we're taking in the B.E.A.R. This is the B.E.A.R. This is basically my company car. It's 12 feet tall, it's 24 feet long, and it weighs 33,000 pounds. It's got four-wheel drive, 1/2 inch reinforced armory, bulletproof glass. Inside the B.E.A.R., we can hold 14 fully equipped tactical officers. Yeah. (Carmody) From the safety end, of the reinforced armory and the bulletproof glass, they have the ability to engage targets 360 degrees around the B.E.A.R. through these weapons ports. If this car ends up in your driveway, you know we mean business. [woman over radio] The entry team is now being deployed. Okay, guys, there's supposed to be four to six adults in here; three males for sure. There is a strong smell of ether, so there's a possibility that they might be cooking meth. Let's be aware of that. [woman over radio] Repeating: the entry team is now deployed at 3:38. (Carmody) From the front side of the house, we have seen nothing. It looks like maybe there is a candle in the front room, because it flickers every once in a while. Well, there's been no signs of movement from inside. We have negotiators en route. They're going to negotiate from the B.E.A.R. One of the problems we're running into right now is, some of our cover team members are experiencing some problems with the streetlights. They're backlighting the officers and basically makes them a silhouette target for anybody inside. 270 to 380. Could you take this light out just to our west? (man) Maybe. [gun clicks] [gunshot] [gun clicks] [gunshot] [gunshot] [gunshot] (Carmody) I'm sorry. [truck engine whirrs] Get back. Hey, Sergeant. (Carmody) Yeah, step up in there. We want to do everything we possibly can to avoid any kind of gunfire, so we're going to have our negotiators try to contact these people and see if we can't talk them out. My name is John. I'm the guy here to help you get out of this mess. This situation does not need to go on anymore. (Jackson) We've been talking to this guy, trying to get him to respond to us for some time now. We're getting nothing out of the house whatsoever. It's getting a little frustrating that he won't respond. We're beginning to get a little concerned that maybe something may have happened inside the house that we don't know about. Hey, Captain, this is Jim. I hadn't heard any radio traffic. I just wanted to confirm that we haven't detected or observed any motion inside the residence since our arrival, correct? There's a better picture. Great. And she pays $800 a month rent, and she's prepaid for eight months. She didn't want anybody near that house. (Heimer) What it sounds like. Well, right now, from a tactical perspective, one of our primary goals is to really get a good look inside of the garage. We have had enough intelligence gathered that causes us to believe there possibly is a meth lab, and we want to be very cautious. Captain Heimer. (Carmody) Okay, Captain. We need to get a look inside that garage. [low menacing music] Okay? The suspect has made threats of a gunfight, but we don't know how he's going to react when we approach the house. (man) Should we stage first? (Carmody) Yeah, stage first. Okay, coming up. [glass breaks] Get some light in there. Yeah. (Carmody) There's two cars. Okay, I see it. I see it. I see it. They're right next to each other. (Carmody) Okay. Okay, let's move back. I think that ether smell was from working on the cars. It appears that the fumes are coming from the cars and not a meth lab. That doesn't change the fact that we still have people inside, and we don't know if they have guns. [truck engine whirring] 5:30. Uh, we're coming up on daylight pretty soon. They've had ample time. We've disconnected power to the house, so we're getting ready to deploy a throw-phone in, and that'll give them a line of communication. 370 to CP and cover team, a five-man team is going up to deploy the phone. Chris, will you put that spotlight in the window? (man) What? Put that spotlight in the window. [glass breaking] (Carmody) 370 to CP, the throw-phone is in. The team is moving back. [line ringing] (man) He's got a probation violation, apparently. [line ringing] (Heimer) Okay, you there? Do you have your full squad staged and ready to go? Yeah, I need you guys to get ready to deploy gas into the residence. If we're not going to have any success with contacting the suspects with the throw-phone, we're going to go ahead and throw gas, so if you guys could mask up and be prepared for that, we'll be ready to go. (Carmody) All right, Captain. Bye. Get your gas masks out and get ready, because we're probably going to deploy gas. (Carmody) We'll give them a couple chances to answer the throw-phone. If they don't, he wants us to do gas, and he wants us chucking it within about 30 seconds of him giving the order. [line ringing] [line ringing] Yeah, we're ready to make entry. Let's go ahead and do it. Saddle up, guys. We're heading up. We're going up. We're going to hold on the front door. Hold on. Hold on. We got one coming out. One coming out. Watch the windows as well, guys. Get down. Get on the ground. What the [...], man? Get your hand behind your back. Watch those windows up top, guys. Watch those windows. Just a second, okay? Who else is in there, brother? Walk this way. Walk this way. One other person. (man) There's one other person. (Carmody) Okay, listen up, guys. We're going to go ahead and make entry. Go. Go. Go. Watch these windows. Watch these windows. Cover high. Cover high. Cover high. Keep going. Keep going. Where's he at? Where's he at? Is he moving at all? (Carmody) Okay, go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Move. Move. Move. Keep going. Coming in behind you. Where's he at? Okay, can you see him? Has he got blood? (man) That's dried-up blood on him. He's been there for a minute. Okay, let me go get my gloves. Where's Douger at? (Carmody) From the looks of the deceased, he had been there for some time. It was obvious that this had occurred quite some time earlier. Well, you never like to see a police incident end this way. It's certainly unfortunate for everyone involved: the people that find him, the people that have to deal with his loss as well. So it's, you know, unfortunate that someone feels that things have gotten that bad and that that's the only way out for them. [gloomy piano music] [percussive music] I'd like to go home, take a shower, and go to bed, but I don't think I'm going to get that yet. We've got a speech therapy appointment with our four-year-old. (woman) You're going to show us all where to go? Uh-huh. All right. (Carmody) My wife and I adopted Caleb when he was two. Do I get kisses? Our daughter, Katie's, all grown up. She's 26, and we just felt like we still had a lot to give, and we wanted to help a child that was in need. (woman) Oh, can you push the big button so Mom and Dad can hear? Good job. Say, "Hi, Mom and Dad." (Caleb) I showed her my drawings. Oh, my goodness. When we got him, he was like an infant. He couldn't walk. He couldn't talk. Three--four. Four. (Carmody) As a result of some of the neglect that he had gone through prior to us adopting him, he has some developmental delays, and we're hoping to overcome that, you know, with the speech therapy. "Feath-er." Feath-er. What sound are we making? Fff. (Carmody) With Caleb, it's obviously not easy. I mean, it's still a bit of a struggle, but he works so hard at it, you know, we're just looking forward to when he's caught up and it's not an issue for him. Say, "See you next week." All right, bud? (woman) Happy Thanksgiving. (Huth) All my brothers being cops, it might be a natural assumption that we come from a family of cops, a long line of that, but actually, the opposite is true. My father was actually kind of a criminal. [blender whirrs] He wasn't a good man, definitely not a good role model. Instead of taking on those traits, we kind of rebelled against them. Eventually, it led to us all being cops. All the things that I experienced made me strong. They made me who I am. I know that with the things I've been through that there's not a whole lot that I cannot accomplish. [pager beeping] [siren wailing] The drug enforcement units have been dealing with this fellow for a while. Again, they don't know his name. They just know his street name. They met up on the deal-- to do a deal with him, and as soon as he saw the car, before it could even get started, he went ahead and took off, so now we're going to try to chase him down. Somebody try to get ahold of 690 on this guy. [siren wailing] This guy's got drug warrants that are years old. He's obviously dangerous, he's possibly armed, and he's somewhere up here ahead of us. [man over radio] Coming back east. Surveillance had the west coverage, so we're thinking he probably went to the east. [woman talks over radio] [man over radio] Yeah, he's coming. Get in the air. We've got the helicopter, going to try to track this guy from the air. These highways intersect. Every time he takes a turn and exits real quick, at the last minute, we've got to try to adjust. I've got myself and my acting sergeant, Owen Farris, in our vehicles. The rest of my team is in the van. (man) 815, I'm-- [man over radio] 50? No, 1-5. This guy's driving a black car, and we think it's a Nissan. This time of day, we got a lot of cars out on the road, so he can be in any one of them at this time. [woman talking over radio] I'm going to sit here for a second at this interchange, a couple of major highways, and maybe this guy will pass by us. We'll give him a second and see if he doesn't come by here. And we're positive on the Nissan, right? Because I just had a black Acura that kind of looked like a Nissan Maxima go by with big wheels on I-70. This guy might have got away for now, I think. [radio beeps] [engine revs] [man over radio] 85th Street. He's doing about 100 miles an hour. I'm turning onto 63rd Street now. Oh, and if you guys can flip around anywhere on 435 and be facing northbound. [Farris over radio] I'm coming up to 63rd. I'm coming. We're going to be westbound on 40 highway. [siren wailing] He's in this neighborhood somewhere. That's his car. [helicopter blades whirring] (Huth) This is so heavily wooded over here, he could be hiding anywhere. He didn't run through here-- too many spiderwebs still. This guy could be hiding anywhere. I've only got five of my personnel out here. We've got a lot of area to cover in these woods. This is his best chance for escape. [helicopter blades whirring] With this canopy, we can't even see the helicopter. There's no way he's going to see down here. [man over radio] [barking] You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in court. He took off running, and we chased him through this neighborhood, and then he got out and bailed and ran through the woods, and I just tracked him through the woods as best I could. (Huth) We jumped him up in the woods. He was hanging back there under the canopy, tree canopy, to stay away from the helicopter. So the helicopter was actually keeping him pinned down, which was good. Everything worked out good, you know. It's not something we do every day. We usually don't traipse around in the woods. We're more designed for the urban environment, but this worked out really well. It's really good to get him in custody. It's really good that no one got hurt, and he gets to go to jail for a while. [electronic beeping] More work. Right back behind you. (Huth) Okay, got everybody here? All right, guys, we've got a Narcotics search warrant to serve today. Yes on guns, unknown on dogs, yes on kids. The suspect is known throughout the neighborhood for carrying a firearm, so we want to make sure that we take special caution. A little background on this warrant: gang squads did an investigation of robberies on the avenue. They've got some suspects in custody. They got a tip that a gun that was used in those robberies is at this house, and they have made a drug buy out of there from our suspect. So we're going to go in there, execute the drug warrant in hopes of finding the gun. All right, dispatch it. All right. About as much as we do. (Farris) I'm not sure what kind of reaction we're going to get. This guy's been linked to a bunch of armed robberies, so it kind of makes it a little more difficult for us with the kids and guns. Those don't go well together. [clapping] [men yelling] (man) Police! Search warrant! Get down! Get down! [clanging] Get down. Get down. Get on the ground. Get back. Get back. Get your hands on your back. Come here. Young lady, come here to me. Lay down on the floor. Lay down-- lay down right here. [dog growls] [dog growling] 1910 to all crews, residence is secure. (woman) Fine job, fellas. Fine job. (Huth) We had a pit bull that was running around kind of scared and kind of skittish. It appeared like she's a mom. Doesn't appear too aggressive, but she did start growling at us, so we went ahead and deployed a dog stick to get control of her so we didn't have to shoot her. It seems pretty docile, but again, it was growling at us, and dogs can change temperaments very quickly, so we're going to find a place to secure it so our detective doesn't have to stand there holding it while we're here the whole time. Hey, Chuck, have somebody come around. You woke up and smoked, then walked upstairs to see what all the commotion was? Yeah. You had to calm down before you came upstairs, huh? Yes, sir. (Farris) After we made entry, we found that a bunch of kids were in the house, but our suspect wasn't at home. (man) He lives here. These two guys don't live here. Just the two young ladies and that gentleman over there. (Huth) We're going to start processing the residents here, the kids that are here, but our main goal was to find this gun we're looking for that was used in these robberies. So far, we've recovered small amounts of drugs and a holster for a gun, so we're still looking for a weapon, obviously. Does anybody know the combination to the safe down there? Hey, you know the combination to the safe down in the basement? (Huth) A couple of my guys just located a safe down in the basement-- a small safe that no one seems to know the combination to, so we're going to bring it out here and use some of our techniques to open it, see what's inside of the safe. (man) You guys sure you don't know the combination? Last chance. (boy) Last chance. (Huth) I think we got the universal combination. [hammer banging] Oh. We found a safe that belongs to the suspect that we came here looking for. He's not here. However, his safe is here with a pair of his pants. They're jean shorts with U.S. currency. (Huth) And a lot of cash. We're going to go ahead and count the cash out, see how much we got there. But most importantly, we found a .357 Magnum handgun with a speedloader with some rounds in there locked in the safe, so again, a very good possibility that's going to be the weapon that we're looking for in relation to these robberies. Go in back? Yeah. (Huth) We're placing this subject under arrest for possession of a controlled substance. We found marijuana in the pocket of his pants. Our suspect's 22 years of age. The rest of these folks are juveniles. You know, the really tragic part in all this is, these children-- just take them out of this environment, maybe they'd have a chance at something better. When I grew up, I was surrounded by a lot of bad influences, but fortunately, I was able to overcome them. I only hope these kids are able to do the same. (Carmody) Mr. Caleb, I'll be the teacher. Okay. "Sweater." Let's hear you say it. Sweh-en. What? Sweat-uh. Sweater-- that's excellent. That's two done. Sweatah. (Carmody) Caleb's doing so well, it's incredible. It's pretty exciting watching Caleb progress through his speech therapy. Um, what is this? Is this a tool? Sss-tool. Oh, you did a great job on that one. [giggles] (Carmody) We're really happy and proud of the progress that he's making. What is that, a, uh-- Scoop of ice cream. A scoop of ice cream? That's great. Every day in the community where I work, you know, I see kids that come from bad situations, that don't have the things that they need, that aren't in loving environments, and, you know, we're not going to let that happen with Caleb. Where my jacket? I think it's right there. Mama has it. Captioning by CaptionMax www.captionmax.com
