[sirens wailing] (Emberlin) The deployment and homicide guys have got him cornered in a house. (Vancuren) Sometimes murder warrants are older. Of course, this is a more exciting one, 'cause it just happened. Any time you go into an operation, you should expect the worst out of the suspect inside. (Emberlin) We're going to treat it as a barricaded person just because he has the AR-15, and he's not afraid to use it. When these suspects are armed with, you know, military assault rifles, it changes our tactics up a little bit. We're setting up in a parking lot not too far from the suspect's location. (Vancuren) The guys that have been watching the house just saw a pickup drive up, and they ID-ed to think that that's the suspect that went inside the house. And how do you pronounce his name? Who? Ismael? Ismael? Uh-huh. Okay. (Byas) These are going to be family, so we're going to kind of talk to them and see if we can find out any information, anything like that. What I need for you to do is, I want you to picture as though you're in a helicopter looking down on the house, okay? and you just draw where the rooms are. Where's the front door? There's a front door here. Okay, is there a window in the front door or a window here? There's two? No, it's just one big one. Now, can you get into the garage from inside, right? Or do you have to go outside to open it? Oh, yeah. Do you have any questions or anything? Yeah, why are you here? Why are you here? We have a warrant for his arrest. Oh, why? Why? That I can't tell you. (Emberlin) The scout's good, because it allows us to gather information about the surrounding areas and the target itself. We need to find places to put our snipers, where to put an arrest team, where to put the entry team. Gathering intel for that is a major priority right now. Okay, that's going to be it. That's our target, right next door to the school. Get the APC on the backup. (Emberlin) The big problem with it now is, it's got a fatal funnel on the front, which is a doorway that funnels everybody that's going into the house down into one small area. (Fuller) It's an area where they can funnel you into, and then with his high-powered weapons, he could take out most of the entry team right there in one spot. Strategy right now is just to get it locked down. Surround it, call him out. (Vancuren) My team will take the A side of the house, which is the front of the house. The other team will take the C side of the house, which is the rear of the house. They ready to pull up? (man) House will be on our left, a red brick house. A red brick house. No. (Emberlin) Turns out that the guy was the suspect's brother, so the suspect's still inside. There's no one else in the house? No, nada. [speaking Spanish] Turn on your cell. (Moreno) Yeah, they say he's not in there, but you know how that goes. We've heard that before, so we've got to take every precaution we can to make sure that the suspect's not in there, 'cause he could be in there holding somebody against their will. (Jackson) This is Dallas SWAT. This place is completely surrounded. This is not a difficult decision to make. The only move you can make right now that would benefit you and your family is for you to walk out the front door. (man) 801 to 894. (man) Go ahead. (Jackson) Don't be foolish and stay inside the house and make this more difficult than it has to be. (Emberlin) We're going to deploy a phone so the suspect can talk to us. Soon as I get clear, I'm going to chunk it as far as I can back in the room. Ready? Yes, sir. (Emberlin) We're going to break and rake this far right window out and throw the phone in, see if he'll respond to that. [glass breaking] (Emberlin) I don't like this. [beeping] (Vancuren) If he doesn't respond soon, we're going to have to escalate our tactics. (Emberlin) Since the suspect's not responding, we're going to start pumping gas in. When you get up there, take those yellow stoppers... (Vancuren) We have good intel that the suspect is possibly in the attic. We're going to deliver a 517 gas canister in the attic, see if we can get him to come out. We can get a 517, Jim, through this vent right here. See it below the flashing? Yep. We can go up there, drive a tool up there, and then I can put one in there hand-tossed. Hopefully fill up the attic. (Emberlin) Looks like the attic's divided into two sections, so the alpha team's going to pump gas through the garage up into the ceiling. (Vancuren) It's frustrating, 'cause this guy allegedly just killed a girl, and he's still at large, so now the detectives pretty much have to start over looking for him again. (Emberlin) The house was a dry hole for bodies, but it probably wasn't for evidence. When these detectives come, they're going to go through, search for things like weapons and bloody clothes. They're not always going to be in the very first place you look. We're going to keep hunting for him all night if we have to. We'll get him. (Junger) I've been a sergeant with the police department now for about six years and SWAT now for about a year and a half. SWAT demands a lot of you physically, mentally, and part of being in the SWAT team is being in good shape, being able to do what you need to do. Not only that, but setting an example for the people that work with you and under you. Let's face it. We don't get hurt as much when we're in shape, compared to people that are out of shape. 19. 187. (Easterling) Your body fat total is 15.2%, so as far as a male, 30 to 39, you're at 70%. (Junger) Being in the 70th percentile isn't terrible, but being a member of an elite SWAT team, that percentage isn't acceptable. My goal is basically to lose about five pounds and some body fat, get in the shape that I was in 15 years ago. One more. (Junger) That's one of the reasons why I've been working with Randy. I'm in charge for an hour a day. Just give me a month. We'll do it. This is Randy. This is what we all aspire to be right here. (Junger) Randy's a pretty good motivational factor. He's pretty intense about his workouts and about his eating habits, but it shows. (Lancaster) Paul's been bugging me. He came to me and wanted me to write him out a diet plan. He seems to be serious, so I told him I'd sit down and write him one out. If it looks good, don't eat it. Sweets, pizza, pasta. If it looks like cardboard, you can have it. Pizza will be the hard one, pizza and pasta. If you do it, I'll take the whole squad out for pizza, and I'll buy, and we'll all have pizza for the day. Okay. If you don't do it, me and you have to run the obstacle course together. All right, you're on. [cell phone rings] This is Sergeant Junger. You said patrol actually saw him run in there? All right, well, I'll rally the troops, and we'll start that way. Thank you. Patrol was attempting to serve a felony arrest warrant on a suspect. As patrol pulled up to his house, the suspect took off running inside of his house. He barricaded himself, and patrol formed a perimeter and called SWAT. Show me the house. It's not this one. Right in front of it there. (Junger) Right now, I'm acting as a perimeter officer to make sure that he doesn't come out the back side of the house. Okay, so based on your information and what you're going to tell me is that he was a felon. He got caught with a gun. He bonded out for $5,000, and now he's reneged on the bond, and that's why he's got the warrant out. (Vancuren) We don't know very much. I know that he has a felony warrant for some kind of weapons charge. I'm part of the entry team, and if we decide to go in after the guy, I'll be part of that team that goes inside. See that B1 window? Mm-hmm. That's a water heater, and he has something on there that doesn't belong on a water heater, so it could be a shooting platform, and in the B2 window, he's been looking out over that blue thing in there. (Junger) In the back of his house, he has a porch with an attic opening with all of his weapons in the attic. The fourth window in, he's got a bow set up for hunting, so I'd assume it had broadheads on it, which would virtually go through our vest. (Humphrey) Well, we've got a couple phone numbers with a cell phone. If we can get him to talk to us on the cell phone, we'll do that. [telephone ring tone] [voice mail greeting] [recorded female voice] Sorry, that voice mailbox is full. Please call again later. Good-bye. (Byas) Okay, well, we can't use his number. We can't even leave a phone number in it, because his mailbox is full. (Junger) Our command post has a phone that we actually physically throw into the structure to try to establish a negotiation or communication. (Junger) It's starting to transition into nighttime, so light is an issue to us. If we stay behind light, anything in front of that light would be blinded to what's behind it. Therefore, we gain the element of surprise. (Vancuren) We need to get rid of that light, 'cause I can't see any of those windows. [glass breaking] (Junger) It sounds like they're getting ready to deploy the throw phone now. (man) We've put a telephone in there for you. You need to answer the telephone. [beeping] (Byas) As of right now, we haven't been able to get any communication. (man) Do the right thing for your family. If not for you, do it for your family. At least answer the telephone and talk to us. (Byas) He's not answering the cell phone. He's not answering to the loud hailer. He's not picking up the throw phone. What we're going to do now is, we're going to end up deploying gas into the house. Is that my gas gun? Do it. (man) crack! crack! [grenade launchers firing] (Byas) We've tried to do everything we can to get any type of response from this guy, and we haven't had anything, so what we're doing now is, we're actually sending our team in to see if we can find him. Four of us are going to make entry through the baker side door, which is the back door, and we're going to do a slow search and search room to room. Okay, got it. We're ready to go in. You ready? (Vancuren) I'm with you. I'm with you. Keep going. All right, you want to do the closet first? (Junger) My understanding of the house is, it's cluttered. (Vancuren) Is there any way to get in those boards behind that? There's a million places he could be hiding, so they're making sure that they leave no stone unturned. (Vancuren) Can you see that corner down in there? Our entry team has been searching the structure for a little while now. No sign of a suspect yet. However, they recovered a couple rifles inside the house. He just didn't disappear, did he? (Junger) We've been out here a total of about six hours. They're in the process of searching the attic right now. It's also the most dangerous. First part of your body that goes through an attic opening is your head. This guy has weapons, and he can shoot at the first thing he sees. (man) He's in-- He's in here. We got him. Keep your hands out in front of you. I got his legs. Back him up. Back him up. Back him up to me. Back him up. (man) Received, 71. Suspect's in custody at 11:15. I got him. (Humphrey) He withstood a lot of gas. He withstood a lot of searching, and stayed secreted for a long time. Very, very unusual. (Vancuren) He was in a cubby. Like, you had to crawl through two different things to get back in there. Scottie had to take off everything to crawl back there to get to him. Yeah. What-- What's the deal? Got a warrant for your arrest. All this behind a warrant? Yeah. [bleep] damn, bro. You been up there the whole time? Yes, sir. How'd you deal with the gas? How'd you handle it? I mean, seriously. Covered my mouth. Kicking my [bleep], man. (Junger) Well, it turns out he's been gassed in prison before. He's used to it, so he knew we were out here. He knew why we were out here, and he played a game. Turns out he lost. Randy's going to be disappointed. I haven't eaten in about six hours now, but I got some stuff in the car, some brown rice and some lean beef. (woman) (man) (Junger) I'm on my way to Parkland Hospital. Dale Hackbarth was the one who was shot in the leg. I think he's the one with the most serious injury, so I'm going to go see how he's doing. (man) (Junger) It's been a long time since SWAT officers actually have been shot. It makes you think, and in our job, unfortunately, there's risks, and we can't avoid risks. This job means the world to me. It's something that I've always wanted to do, but I'm acutely aware of the dangers that are associated with it. (Hackbarth) It's a warrant that we've run a hundred times before. Suspects were believed to have weapons. The front door was somewhat barricaded. Shots were ringing through the door, and that's when I got shot in the leg. (woman) Doing pretty well. You want to talk to him? Dale? How you feeling? Fine, thank you. Thanks a lot for stopping by. Oh, not a problem, man. I just want to let you know that I just left Eddie, and I left the A unit guys, and they all wish you well, and say if there's anything we can do, in your family life or you, let us know. I appreciate that. You very well could have been one of us or one of my guys. It could have been a lot worse. Your wound was... A little too close there. Little close. How you doing, Dale? Good. You know, it takes something like this before you realize, "Man, I'm a fortunate guy to have this many friends." Take care. Appreciate it, bud. All right. Bye now. Bye-bye. (Emberlin) We're here to take care of anything he needs throughout the night. He'd do it for us. We're doing it for him. Well, fortunately, we don't have to do this very often. There's probably some things that we can learn from it, but as far as it making me apprehensive about the next operation, not by any stretch of the imagination, because, you know, this is the job that every one of us chose to do. [beeping] He just what? Okay. We have another barricaded person in West Dallas. Allegedly threatened his neighbor with a weapon, and he's barricaded inside an apartment. I'm feeling a little apprehensive. We can get into another shooting here now. [siren wailing] (man) We have another barricaded person in West Dallas. Allegedly threatened his neighbor with a weapon. We have to be ready for what happened this morning at any moment. We can get into another shooting here now. (Claggett) My job here is one of the entry guys. I'm going to be on the assault element that goes in and secures the place. (Byas) Complainant says, "I know where the suspect is. "He lives right around the corner. "He threatened me with a gun while he was trying to break into my place." Okay. "And he's right over there, and that's the one that's looking at you." (Junger) Link up with him. He's got the deliberate assault. You're on the deliberate assault team. Link up with him. He's got... (Junger) Suspect is allegedly MHMR, which is Mental Health, Mental Retardation. The intel said this suspect might have a pistol on him. We're physically two or three inches from him, just a couple sheetrock walls away. Considering this guy's mental condition, this could be a pretty volatile situation. My role as a sergeant here will be to oversee and orchestrate the movements of the officers in deploying gas when they need it and where they need it. (Claggett) With MHMR patients, you can never count on their actions and their reactions. You know, they're-- You can't predict them, basically, is what it is, so that's going to be our challenge on this one. We've had a busy day so far. Early this morning, we ran a warrant, a drug warrant, and four of our guys got shot at the front door, through the door. We secured the location, and in the midst of doing all the paperwork for that and all the after-action stuff on that, we got called out on this barricade situation. The information that we have right now is he's the only person inside. Witnesses have said they've seen him on the second-floor window. (man) If you look at the complex there, we have our target. This is our suspect here. This team here is going to be the arrest team on alpha side. (Junger) Although the suspect left his front door open, we don't want to just barge in, because he's supposed to be armed. The first thing he'll see is, basically, the top of our heads coming up the stairs, and we don't want to give him something to shoot at. (Claggett) We don't want to take these stairs. That's asking for trouble. That's asking for four more guys shot today. Listen up, guys. They're going to start loud hailing, okay? [speaking Spanish] At this operation here, people are kind of on edge. We had no time to, basically, decompress. Complacency is probably the biggest battle we fight. We think that we go beating on somebody's door and breaking their windows, they're going to give up every time. The guy this morning, he didn't want to. (Junger) I tell you, to see your buddies get shot, that's a pretty unique experience. I hope I don't have to do it again, but I also realize in this line of work, it's a realistic possibility, and it can happen right now. [speaking Spanish] (man) Can you hear me? 810 to 850. Go ahead. (Junger) The suspect isn't responding to our loud hails, so we'll start preparation to deploy gas to drive him from the second floor down to the first floor. We'll push the gas and see if we can get some movement downstairs, and we could launch one in there, or we can just hold what we got, see if we can't press him out to us. Don't give him the opportunity to barricade himself downstairs. Now we've really gained nothing, because he's still inside. [speaking Spanish] Everybody hold your positions. (Junger) Now, whether he's going to give up, barricade himself, we don't know. [man speaking Spanish] (Claggett) We don't want to take these stairs. That's asking for four more guys shot today. Our goal is to drive him from the second floor down to the first floor. We're going to step out, and we're going to start putting Less Le-- our chemical agent into all the upstairs windows. (Junger) This is a 40 millimeter less-than-lethal munitions weapon equipped with an EOTech sighting system. We use this to deploy tear gas in the form of a ferret round. It's a projectile that contains a powder of CS gas. blam! When people come in contact with tear gas, it causes their lungs to burn. It causes their skin to burn, their eyes to burn. It makes it real hard for them to breathe, and it just creates an uncomfortable environment for them to be in. blam! And immediately after we deploy those, we start following up-- (Claggett) Chemical agents are generally used to drive somebody from a point, or in this case, to a point. We want him to come downstairs to us where we've got eyes on him. We'll probably have a team waiting for him when he comes downstairs. We've had some guys that were impervious to the stuff. We're hoping he's not one of them. [man speaking Spanish] Can you hear me? We got suspect in baker 2 window, second baker 2 window. [grenade launchers firing] (man) Can't continue to be inside. blam! (man) Baker, you got hands on. We're good. We're good right here, guys. Stay right here. [man speaking Spanish] He's coming downstairs. Coming out the front door. [man speaking Spanish] (man) In there. In there. It's okay. Okay. Okay. (Claggett) Now that our guy has come out, we'll do a cursory search for the weapons. [man speaks Spanish] (man) (man) Received, 812. Helmets information, suspect is in custody. [man speaks Spanish] The paramedics are coming out. (Claggett) At this point, we're helping him out, getting the gas washed out of his eyes and his face. With this guy supposedly being a mental health patient, he will be taken in for evaluation, and then after that, we'll book him. (Junger) This operation, this one here went as planned. It actually went pretty well. Our guys got their mind right. They realized what they needed to do on this one. They didn't lose sight of their mission, and they carried on. óo (Junger) My goal is basically to lose about five pounds and some body fat, get in the shape that I was in 15 years ago. Randy Lancaster has basically offered to personally take on the challenge of getting me in shape. Randy, what are we doing? Desperate times call for desperate measures, Paul. You got a few more pounds to go. Jump rope, hit the bag, the step, and some sit-ups, and just keep going for about 30 minutes straight. Don't film me. I haven't done this in ages. (Junger) Feelin' pretty good. So, Randy, you'll owe me a dinner. Well, it's test time. We'll go 12. Is there any way of cheating on this thing? 13. Okay. When I started, I was about 187. 181. Not bad. Let's see the charts. All right. See, the old was 15.2% body fat. Okay, now your total is 9.8%. That's not bad. Randy, I give him credit. Anything under 10% is exceptional. I didn't anticipate getting under 10% body fat, so, actually, this I'm proud of. How are y'all? (Claggett) What should I get, Randy? Paul, you won the bet. Whatever you want. Maybe. What about a stromboli? You can do that. Stromboli? You could. I actually thought you'd say no.
