Get me a long gun over here. <i> (man) And if they shot at an officer once,</i> they're going to do it again. <i> (man) Yeah, this is more</i> than just a self-defense weapon. This is for doing damage. I just found out that my wife's pregnant. I mean, it really made me think, because I've never had to really deal with anything like that before. Come here, baby. It's okay. [child wails] It's go time. [loud crash] [rock music] (man) Barricaded suspect, armed and dangerous. (man) Suspect is inside. (man) We're going to hit the ground running. (man) ♪ Adrenaline's running higher. ♪ ♪ Strap the metal to my back. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ Just you try to push me away, ♪ ♪ 'cause you know I'll stay. ♪ ♪ My aim is true. ♪ ♪ ♪ [weight clanks] (Huth) I'm the supervisor for the 1910 squad. I supervise six operators in my squad. And our mission is to execute drug search warrants on drug houses. Obviously, strength and endurance is extremely important due to the amount of weight we have to carry and the heavy lifting involved in our job. It only takes one time of running up 5 flights of stairs carrying a 40-pound ram and 6-pound vest and smacking a fortified door to realize you got to be in really good shape to do this job. [hoop rattles] [basketball thumping] [shouting] Come on. Uh-oh. (Huth) All these guys are like brothers. It's like an extended family. We spend more time with each other than we do our own families, so we come to rely on each other. The decisions I make, they have to be willing to bet their life that they're going to be the right decisions. There's a lot of great jobs out there, but leading these guys is the absolute best for me. That's game. How in the hell did you do that? [laughs] [rock music] (Huth) Are you getting ready to brief? [rubber band snaps] [laughter] [rubber band snaps] (man) Yeah, there you go. (Huth) It's typical, these guys goofing off in the briefing room, trying to keep it loose, blowing off some steam. It's a pretty high-stress job, so that's good. I like to see them doing that. But one thing I know about them is, when it's time to get down to business, they put their game faces on, and we go to work. <i>All right, is everybody here?</i> Okay, we're serving a no-knock search warrant. Our suspect's known to carry a concealed weapon in his right-front pants pocket: silver semiauto handgun. <i> He drives a black Pontiac Grand Prix.</i> <i> This warrant's going to be executed</i> <i> at the conclusion of a confirmation buy.</i> The undercover detectives are going to contact the suspect. They've been dealing with him for a while. He's comfortable with them. They're going to go ahead and make another drug buy from him. <i>We're going to set up and wait for the detective</i> to give us the word that he's made the purchase and they've tracked this guy back to his house, and then we're going to hit it. No questions. Let's go down and tac out <i> and get ready to roll.</i> [gun snaps] [Velcro rasps] (Farris) Yeah, it's dangerous out here, doing what we do. Um, I just found out that I'm going to be a new father. So it's really given me a lot of stuff to think about. I love this job, and I've been doing it for a long time, but I don't have just myself to worry about now. I got someone else that's going to rely on me. [suspenseful music] ♪ ♪ [man on radio] Right now, we're waiting on the bad guy. He's mobile. He's out rolling around. He's going to meet up with our UC. <i> We got kind of a good chance of catching this guy.</i> We've got the helicopter on board. [helicopter whirring] (Huth) If he tries to run, there's no way that this guy's going to be able to elude them. He can take all the turns he wants to, but the helicopter's overhead. He's not getting away. The ideal scenario is, he does the deal, goes back the house. We get the house. We get him in the house. <i> However, if he doesn't go back to the house,</i> <i> we're going to probably go ahead,</i> initiate a felony car check on him, try to take him off. [suspenseful music] ♪ ♪ [man over radio] Copy that. 1910 squad's ready. [suspenseful music] ♪ ♪ Hey, 1030 squad, did he park? What did he do? [man over radio] [man over radio] [radio beeps] <i> [man over radio] Let's try to take him at the market parking lot.</i> <i> We're going to try to roll in.</i> We don't want him inside the market. Wait till he comes out. (Huth) Okay. (Farris) Police department! Let me see your hands. <i> Get your hands up.</i> <i> Get out of the car.</i> <i> (Huth) Down, down, down, down, down.</i> (man) Ah, mind my wrist, man. [moaning] Oh...ah... Put your hand behind your back. Something's dragging on his belly there too. (Huth) You got a gun on you? No, I ain't got no gun. (Farris) We're looking for you. You got three felony warrants out for your arrest. For what? For drugs. You got a bag of crack and a big thing of marijuana in your car. 1910 to all crews. Suspect's in custody. <i> [helicopter whirring]</i> [man over radio] We need to roll. Somebody left this parking lot in a big hurry running in the direction of the residence we're about to smack. We're looking at a potentially much more dangerous situation. We don't want them to have time to barricade themselves in there or possibly arm themselves. Start passing these people off. We're going to roll. Let's go. (Huth) No-knock warrant. Flash bang ready. <i> [helicopter whirring]</i> (man) Police search warrant! [door bangs] <i> (Farris) Police search warrant.</i> [explosion] [indistinct shouts] <i> (man) Clear!</i> Out. (man) Police department open the door. [edgy percussive music] ♪ ♪ <i> [helicopter whirring]</i> (Huth) There's nobody home. Either they got tipped off, or they scooted out of here pretty quick, because TV's still on. Somebody left in a hurry. But the important thing is that we got our suspect, we got all the currency we were looking for, and we got all the drugs. Huge house, which now we're going to start the processing, which is going to involve all my guys searching, logging, cataloging, so there's a lot of boxes got to be gone through. We're looking at a couple hours of work here just in logging everything. (Farris) The fun part takes about 10, 15 minutes. Then you got all this stuff that's not so fun. One box containing six rounds out of the basement off of a nightstand. Magazines. <i> Now we're looking for the gun.</i> (man) When we searched the interior, we located a large bag of marijuana. (Farris) This some crack cocaine that we took off of the seller. Located the buy money. I'm getting ready to call our undercover and verify that this is our buy money. It came off of our seller. We're just putting a few more nails into his coffin at this point. [jazzy electronic music] ♪ ♪ <i>(Farris) Janelle and I have been married for two years,</i> and we are expecting our first child. <i>We're going to the doctor today.</i> <i>Hopefully we're going to get</i> some sort of sonogram or get to hear a heartbeat. With that, we'll be able to tell our parents that she's pregnant. We're kind of waiting till everything's okay before we spread the news. <i>I got a pretty close family,</i> so it's kind of hard not telling them, because they know how much we want children, and they can't wait for us to have children. <i>(Janelle) We had a couple miscarriages.</i> <i>And then we've done</i> a little bit of fertility stuff. And our second time around, here we are. Seems like it's taken forever. And, I mean, I have learned a lot, just this whole process. I mean, it's amazing <i> anybody gets pregnant at all.</i> Usually it's just people get drunk and it happens, but... <i>[Janelle laughs]</i> We tried that, and it didn't work either. <i>[Janelle laughs]</i> So you're doing fine. <i>(Janelle) Yep, doing good.</i> All right, well, we should be able to hear your little child today. Should be able hear it way back there. Yep. Yep. Yep. Wow. It's real. The baby sounds good, and so pretty much it's downhill from here. <i>So take care of yourself.</i> <i> (Janelle) Thank you very much.</i> Sure. You're awesome. Bring the baby by. Yeah. <i> Yes, definitely.</i> That was pretty wild, just a real quiet noise in the background. But, yeah, that was awesome. It's what we wanted to hear. <i> I've got to head into work,</i> got kind of a big warrant to do today. <i> Chip's off.</i> <i> My sergeant's off today,</i> <i> so I have to do the briefing,</i> get this baby stuff out of my head and get my mind right. <i> We're looking for</i> Benjamin Morris, black male, 10/5 of '57. Our suspect today is a mid-level dealer. <i> He's been know to be armed and dangerous in the past.</i> If we make entry on the house, find any sort of weapons, he'll be looking at a federal charge, which is some serious time. <i> It looks like this could be kind of a difficult warrant:</i> <i> kids, yes; dogs, yes; guns, yes.</i> <i> Fortification is possible.</i> All right, go down and meet up with districts <i> and go do this before this guy leaves.</i> [edgy techno music] ♪ ♪ We're just trying to hustle up and get down there before he leaves, get him done, get him out of the way, so we can move on to the next project. ♪ ♪ Oh, I'm all right. <i> (man) Yeah, yeah.</i> <i> (Farris) One, two, three, four,</i> <i> five, six, seven, eight,</i> <i> nine with the vehicle.</i> Let's pull in. (Farris) Police department search warrant. [loud pop] (Farris) What was that? (man) Gunshot, guys. Shot coming out! Shot coming out the window. (man) Out, out. Pull them out. Pull away! [explosion] Out, pull them out, Owen. Pull away! [explosion] (Farris) All of us are okay at this time. Who's out back? I'm calling an operation 100. Spread out! [dogs barking] Spread out and take the perimeter. Give me a long gun over here. <i> [sirens wailing]</i> <i> [helicopter whirring]</i> <i> (Farris) Officer in the back,</i> <i> take good cover.</i> <i> [helicopter whirring]</i> 1911, we just took fire when we entered the residence. We have a barricaded party. We need to start tac. Throw me your keys. (Farris) We called in our tactical response team. Our specialty is serving narcotics search warrants. We're not equipped to handle a barricaded party, which is what this has turned out to be, so they're going to show up and bring in their armored cars. They're going to deploy snipers and a cover team. They're going to relieve us. <i> [man over radio] An operation 100 call at this location.</i> <i> And just for your FYI,</i> <i> there are three members of 70 squad</i> <i> that were sent in with a warrant.</i> <i> We are at the location taking the perimeter right now.</i> [sirens wailing] We're here at the assembly point for our command post. [magazine clicks] It's roughly just a block and a half east of the incident. It's close enough that nobody here is in any kind of direct danger, but it's at a reasonable distance that we can respond there with any of our assets. CP to 380 or 370. It's go time. [police radio squawking] <i> [helicopter whirring]</i> <i> [man #1 over police radio] Copy that.</i> <i> [man #2 over radio] 171 and D4 elevated.</i> <i> [helicopter whirring]</i> (Farris) We just got relieved by our tactical response team. We pulled up the hill a little bit. We're still out here at the scene trying to pass on some information to the other guys. And then we're going to load up here. We're going to go back to the command post. If you look, there's, like, four or five holes that are spaced sporadically. Well, I looked, and there's a-- Gun's in. Insulation floating right by my face. <i> (man) Well, that's when I called it.</i> I was like... I've been down here almost five years, and this my first time experiencing on entry taking fire like this. Our squad's done for the day, so we're just going to head on home and hang out with our families. Let's get out of here. [police radio squawks] armody) Basically, what they're setting up right now are freestanding cameras. We have a couple of them, and they can give the command post, basically, a bird's-eye view of what's going on. This is our remote camera system. It's portable. It's one of the first tools that we deploy. It's a wireless camera that is controlled from the command post, so it's sending a signal back to the command post so the three captains can see what's going on. It puts them in real time right with us. It gives us the ability to zoom in 24 times stronger than the human eye. It allows us to operate in an area up to 3/4 of a mile away from the command post. <i> [helicopter whirring]</i> [generator humming] If those are bullet holes, one of them just missed getting shot by inches. Do you want to go around? I'd like to try the farthest spot. (Carmody) Well, myself and Sergeant Bill Brown are going to respond over to the A2 side of the house, and look for an appropriate point to deploy gas. Okay, that might be the best we can do. <i> (Brown) If it'll go through.</i> Copy. 370's en route to pick up water. The ideal situation is to get them to come out on their own. [over loudspeaker] It's in your best interest. Just come to the front door with your hands up <i> and make contact with the officers.</i> Sometimes when we show up on an op, we don't know what that suspect's intentions are. If they've already shot at officers, then, you know, when we're arriving here, we know what their intentions are. So we gear ourselves up and plan to know that there's nine chances out of ten if they shot at an officer once, they're going to do it again. <i> [Cowdrey over loudspeaker] Benjamin, you're the reason we're doing this.</i> <i> All you have to do is come in front of your house</i> <i> with your hands up.</i> <i> Come on, Benjamin.</i> <i> It's going to get nasty here, man.</i> (Brown) It's been scorching. And it hasn't been in spurts. You know, we've gone with 100-degree weather for a week, two weeks straight. (man) How hot do you think it is in here right now? I know I'm not as hot as you. <i>About 105, 110.</i> I know it's hot. <i> [Cowdrey over loudspeaker] Benjamin, come on, man.</i> <i> Just come to the front of the house</i> <i> with your hands up.</i> <i> We can't do this all night long.</i> [foreboding music] ♪ ♪ Well, right now we're getting ready to get into position so that we can deploy some OC gas, and that's just basically a pepper-based irritant that's going to make it uncomfortable for anybody inside. Hopefully, it'll make him want to come out pretty quick. [loud pop] [glass shatters] [loud pop] [canister clinks and hisses] Gas can't be tasting too good right now. <i> [helicopter whirring]</i> We're just--we're not getting anything with him. All right, thanks. Bye. (Heimer) Suspects in the past have chosen to take their own lives. Some have chosen to hide and then give up when they're located. Some have actually chosen to engage the police in a gun battle or some other type of confrontation. <i> [man over radio] Have a person break through the attic.</i> Just about what, five, little over five hours. [ominous music] ♪ ♪ (Carmody) We've cut the power to his house, and we've introduced gas to the structure. [loud pop] He's not responding to any of those, so there's a good chance we're going to have to go ahead and attempt to make entry. Well, right now, they're hooking the winch from the Bear armored vehicle up to the Cadillac that's in the driveway, the intention being pulling the Cadillac out of the driveway and out of the way to allow us to access the garage door. [edgy music] ♪ ♪ (man) Yes. [loud crash] [dog barks] They're going to have <i> to attack something about right there.</i> [loud crash] <i> [dog barks]</i> <i> [garage door creaks]</i> A good tactical entry is like a well-orchestrated ballet. It's got flow and rhythm, and it's just a beautiful thing to watch. (Carmody) Right now, the entry team's masking up. We're going to make entry into the front of the house. We're going to try to make entry through the garage. [suspenseful music] ♪ ♪ (Carmody) The suspect was found deceased in a small closet in the basement from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He apparently shot himself in the head with a .357 revolver. A lot of the guys are pretty tired. It's after midnight. This thing lasted over eight hours. It lasted a long time, and we used every single person that we had. The guys that served the warrant this afternoon got real lucky. I saw where the bullet holes were, and just imagining where they were standing, that was a real close one. It's not the way we want these things to end, but it happens that way. That's the, I think, fourth, maybe the fifth one that's ended that way this summer, so I don't know. Jail must be pretty bad these days. <i> (man) Ready?</i> Ready. Let's go. (Farris) I was calling to see if you had any updates. Where'd they find him at? Found him in a storage room with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was dead at the scene. (Janelle) When Owen called me and told me he was shot at, I was a little bit concerned, um...especially now that there's a child on the way. I mean, I always worry about him, but I don't let him know that. [bowls clatter] He works with a great group of guys, so I know they have each other's backs. It did hit home when he was shot at. (Farris) Getting the news that I'm going to be a dad and then, you know, the next day going to work and getting shot at, I mean, not right away, it didn't hit me. But, I mean, kind of thinking back and looking at it now, it's a lot different, I mean, knowing that I'm going to be a father and the job I do and the risks I take. [percussive rock music] ♪ ♪ It waited until now to get hot, Gary. It's been cool all day. ♪ ♪ We are right now going by to look at a residence that we're going to serve a search warrant on for the detectives. <i> We're just trying to get an idea</i> and the layout of it, so we can go back and brief the squad. <i> This work is in regard</i> to several drug purchases <i> that were made from this suspect.</i> Detectives got on to him and started working with him and dealing with him, and we're in a position now that they're comfortable making an arrest. <i>That one, that's our target house.</i> We just went by the residence here, took a look at it. Looks like pretty simple access. <i> One thing that we know</i> <i> from talking with the detectives</i> and looking at the affidavit is, this gentleman in question always carries a weapon with him. We're executing a no-knock search warrant. It's a white house with brown trim. We execute a no-knock search warrant on a residence when we know that there's guns or people that are known to be violent in that residence. <i> This gentleman, he does carry weapons.</i> He's known to carry a gun at all times. <i> Our nearest hospital-- if anything were to happen,</i> <i> we were going to transport one of our own--</i> <i> is Research.</i> We're about 60 seconds from the hospital, <i> so it's a good place to be for us.</i> <i> Get dressed, guys.</i> I'm the point man, which is basically the first person through the door once we enter the house, pick the best route, put people down on the ground and just search the house. This is our first warrant since our last incident where we took some fire, so I think that's in the back of everybody's head. (Huth) They've all went and talked to the police psychologist. She signed off on them, saying that they're all still probably as crazy as they were before any of that happened but actually good enough to keep working. Whew, see that sweat coming off my brow? (Huth) I don't expect you guys to change anything. You did exactly the right thing the other day. You do exactly the right thing every time. We can't be any more cautious than we always are. We can't control the suspect's actions. We only control ours. Anybody can shoot at us at any time. Nothing we can do about that. (Farris) The guy's known to be armed inside the house. [suspenseful music] ♪ ♪ Three, two, one. (Ferris) Police department search warrant! (man) Police search warrant. <i> [child wails]</i> <i> (Farris) Get down. Get down.</i> <i> Police search warrant.</i> <i> (man) All right!</i> <i> (Farris) All right.</i> <i> Police department search warrant.</i> <i> [indistinct shouts]</i> <i> (man) Police search warrant.</i> <i> Search warrant, get down on the ground.</i> <i> [scuffling]</i> <i> (man) Police search warrant.</i> <i> [child wails]</i> [child wailing] Come here, baby. We'll sit in the van. Hi, little guy. <i> (Huth) From the looks of it now,</i> where we're at, I think we got our suspect in custody, matches the description of the suspect we were given. We had a little small child in the front room. Didn't have any idea about kids. I'm the last guy in on this particular deal, so I just picked up the child and stepped outside with it. In the process of searching the house for anybody else, they located another child, a smaller infant, that was in like a little bouncy chair and also took that child out and turned both children over to our detectives just temporarily, for their safety. (Huth) I'm glad big Mike was ramming, because he knocked the thing open in one hit. (man) Police search warrant. [loud bang] [child wails] Because I wouldn't want to deploy the flash bang in there. We had a little small child in the front room. It was nice to be able to use some of our technology and our tactics to provide for our safety, but the safety of those children come before even our safety. We'll take more risks to keep those kids safe. Oh, it always sucks when there's kids in the house. I mean, unfortunately, it's nothing new, but--I don't know. That's the only part that I'd say kind of bothers me about the job, is the kids. They don't know any better. They don't know what's going on. It's scary for them, usually. Trafficking narcotics, and the poor kids are just right in the middle of it. (Huth) We got our suspect in custody. They made several buys from this guy. He's already looking at some time on that. Turns out, he's a convicted felon. He's in possession of a bulletproof vest and a loaded firearm. Convicted felons are not allowed to possess firearms or bulletproof vests. That's an automatic federal charge there. He is not allowed to have that under federal guidelines, so this guy's looking at some time. (Farris) Yeah, I mean, I felt a little more tension, being the first one through the door again for the first time after. But making this corner and counting out those final three counts, yeah, I mean, my heart rate went up a little bit. By the time we got to the porch, we went in, it was just kind of business as usual. And you forget about it. You know, you have to. I'm glad this one's out of the way. I feel better. I'm sure everybody else is the same way. (Huth) We served just over 450 drug search warrants last year, and we don't show any sign of slowing down this year. <i>Every day, you know, the same thing.</i> We're out here kicking in these doors, taking these people to jail. <i> The drug trade is just absolutely out of control.</i> You know, we can sit back and twiddle our thumbs and resign ourselves to the fact that we're never going to stop this stuff, or we can get out there and try to get our hands dirty and dig in and make a difference. That's what everybody in my unit tries to do. <i> (man) About ten days or so ago,</i> we got a little bit of dope from this house. <i> It came from a guy by the name of Farhad Soltani.</i> <i> We had negotiated that</i> <i> what I would do is, I would go into the house</i> look at the dope, come back out to the car and get the money and then go back in. He told me, you know, <i> "If you go in, you see a bunch of guns,</i> <i> "don't freak out.</i> <i> They're there all the time."</i> <i> He could be just saying that</i> just to give me the willies, or they could actually have a lot of guns. <i> Right now at this point,</i> <i> we don't know which house he's at.</i> (Hamilton) We can go over this again as well. These two are linked together in this investigation in belief that this is the supply house for this location here. <i> Guns, probable; kids, unknown;</i> <i> dogs, yes.</i> (Huth) We're going to be executing two search warrants simultaneously this morning. Pauly's squad's going to hit one location while my squad hits the other. Basically, the problem here is, we've dealt with this guy at both locations. We don't know where he's going to be at. We can't get an eye on him. We can't locate him. (Huth) From the briefing that we got, we know to expect a lot of guns and drugs possibly from this guy, and we're for sure that he goes armed. There's no doubt about that. There's going to be weapons. (Farris) Hey, you guys, be careful. You too. [suspenseful music] ♪ ♪ (man) Police department search warrant. Open the door. <i> (man) Police search warrant!</i> <i> Open the door.</i> (man) Get on the ground. <i> [child wails]</i> [battering ram clatters] [loud bang] (man) There you go. Good one. (man) Police search warrant! <i> (woman) What are you doing?</i> (man) Get on the ground! Put your hands behind your back. [wails] I don't understand what's happening. I don't understand what's happening. Do you think bawling like that's helping anything? Oh, f[...] you. I don't know what's going on. If you don't tell me what's going on, how am I supposed to know? Oh, my God, I swear to God I don't know. Oh, my God, I hope you are so happy, because you guys are going to be in so much trouble. I have no idea what is going on. I just got word from Pauly on the radio. They got the suspect in custody at the second location, so everything right now is going according to plan; start the process of going through and cataloging evidence. I was just using the rest room when I heard a f[...] big-ass boom. And [...] I come out to the front door, and I was naked. Well, I'm a car dealer, and I don't know. They're saying I deal drugs, so, you know, hopefully the truth will come out. I don't even live here. I just stay here sometimes. Are you going to treat me like this when this isn't my f[...] house? Baby, baby, chill out. (Masters) In the master bedroom, we call it the southwest bedroom, there's--underneath the box springs, there's a assault rifle and looks like a .357. (Hernandez) It's an A-- it appears to be an SKS. This is more of a-- more than just a self-defense weapon. This is for doing damage. This is a Ruger .44 caliber that was also underneath the bed with that weapon. Luckily for us, he told us that we scared him coming in the house today, so he didn't grab that. So that's something that we're up against all the time. At this point in the execution of the search warrant, we've recovered a good quantity of marijuana out of a vehicle outside that's registered to the owner here at the residence. We've also got several firearms in the residence, one of which is responding back as stolen. All in all, it's going well. We're getting some dope, we're getting some bad guys, and that's what we need to do. Step on up in there. Watch your head. It's a--yeah, it's about a pound of marijuana that's inside this bag. It could be a little more or a little less. A lot of this currency was recovered under the stove, so he-- again, this is another good indication of how drug dealers conceal their currency and their products. They hide them in places where it's hard to get to, number one, and in a location where people, they think, hopefully won't be looking. Well, it was another successful warrant. We got the bad guy in custody, we took some guns off the street, and we got his drugs. So, all in all, quite pleased with the outcome. (Farris) Today we're down here celebrating my father's 65th birthday with my family. We all got together down at my sister's restaurant and her husband's, Jazz, down on State Line Road. We're also going to drop the news that my wife and I are expecting our first child, so pretty exciting. I'm ready to get this off my chest. <i> [kids shouting]</i> Matty, here. [lively conservation] Make a wish. [cheers and applause] <i> (Farris) We got the family out here.</i> When you get some time <i>and get through cooking up everything,</i> after, I'm going to make a kind of an announcement.
