hello I'm father Reid and thank you for joining me today in praying the Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary meditating as we will on the Joyful Mysteries we're here at Gate of Heaven Church in South Boston this truly magnificent stunningly beautiful church has been the place of worship for Catholics since the establishment of the parish in 1863 and today along with st. Brigid parish and South Boston Catholic Academy this parish is a place of the new evangelization a force to bring people back to Jesus Christ through his Blessed Mother who is truly the Gate of Heaven and so let us begin our prayer together in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit amen I believe in God the Father Almighty Creator of heaven and earth and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord who was conceived by the Holy Spirit born of the Virgin Mary suffered under Pontius Pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father from there he will come to judge the living in the dead I believe in the Holy Spirit the Holy Catholic Church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting amen our Father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is heaven especially those who are in most need of thy mercy the first joyful mystery the Annunciation imagine if you will the surprise of this young woman Miriam when the angel appeared to her and announced that she was to be the mother of God imagine the surprise the trepidation but also know how much she trusted that God's goodness that God's Will would be fulfilled in her life and so she gave her Fiat she said yes and because Mary was able to cooperate so generously at such a young age we have been given a savior the Savior came among us in the flesh through Mary's womb she truly is the second joyful mystery the visitation we know that Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth and when she did she brought the Lord to her she was a true evangelists she brought the good news resting in her womb and in that encounter between those two women they expressed love for one another love for neighbor and in their recognition of the presence of Jesus within Mary's womb they expressed their love and devotion for God love for God love for neighbor the two simple and fundamental Commandments that Mary's son would teach us and so as we meditate on the mystery of the visitation we pray birth of Jesus in Bethlehem we celebrate this mystery every Christmas but really it is so central to our understanding of ourselves and our Catholic faith that it is a mystery that permeates every day of our lives it is the mystery of the family into which Jesus was born he came among us in a family and there in a stable in Bethlehem we see the family no family is perfect every family has its challenges and in that moment the moment of Christ's birth Mary and Joseph and their infant son Jesus the Son of God struggled to become family and the church is family and we look to that stable in Bethlehem for our way to understand and to perfect that mystery in our lives each one of us has a family we come from a family and we model ourselves on that Holy Family of Bethlehem our Father who temple Mary and Joseph as we know took their infant child to the temple their firstborn to be presented to the Lord they fulfilled their obligations as faithful Jews and there is an expression that we use often the practice of our faith they were practicing their faith and so we are called to practice ours to celebrate the Eucharist on Sunday at our parish church to frequent the Sacrament of Penance knowing that we need to be forgiven and restored to express our love and compassion for one another be it within our family home at work in the classroom to encounter the poor and show them the compassion they deserve these and so many other things constitute what it means to practice our faith and we rely on the prayers intercession of Mary the Gate of Heaven and the Holy Family to help final joyful mystery the finding of Jesus in the temple as difficult as this moment must have been for Jesus parents realizing that he was missing and then being relieved to find him in the temple his response is revealing he said to them did you not know that I had to be in my father's house whenever we look at an image of Jesus or imagine his face it's a challenge I think for us to remember that Jesus as we say in the Creed is consubstantial with the father that he is truly God taken on our human condition when Joseph and Mary looked at Jesus it must have been hard for them to imagine that he was their Messiah the Christ but yet Jesus reveals this to them and to us today when he says did you not know that I had to be in my father's house our Father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name the Blessed fruit of thy womb Jesus o Clement o loving o sweet Virgin Mary pray for us o Holy Mother of God that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ let us pray who God has only begotten a son by his life death and resurrection has purchased for us the rewards of everlasting life gret we beseech thee that by meditating on these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary we may both imitate what they contain and obtain what they promised through the same Christ our Lord amen may the divine assistance remain always with us may the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace Holy Mother with thy loving child by blessing give to us this day in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit amen well I'm so grateful to
