and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of leviticus the lord said to moses speak to the whole assembly of the children of israel and tell them be holy for i the lord your god am holy you shall not steal you shall not lie or speak falsely to one another you shall not swear falsely by my name thus profaning the name of your god i am the about spreading slander among your kin nor shall you stand by idly when your neighbor's life is at stake i am the lord you shall not bear hatred for your brother in your heart though you may have to forever the ordinances of the lord are true all of them just [Music] your words lord are spirit and life let the words of my mouth and the thought of my heart find favor before you o lord my rock and my redeemer your words lord our spirits [Music] glory and praise to you lord jesus [Music] lord christ christ behold now is a very acceptable time behold now is the day of salvation [Music] a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew jesus said to his disciples when the son of man comes in his glory and all the angels with him he will sit upon his glorious throne and all the nations will be assembled before him and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats he will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left then the king will say to those on his right come you who are blessed by my father inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world for i was hungry and you gave me food i was thirsty and you gave me drink a stranger and you welcomed me naked and you clothed me ill and you cared for me in prison and you visited me then the righteous will answer him and say lord when did we see you hungry and feed you or thirsty and give you drink when did we see you a stranger and welcome you or naked and clothe you when did we see you ill or in prison and visit you and the king will say to them in reply amen i say to you whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine you did for me then he will say to those on his left depart from me you were cursed into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels for i was hungry and you gave me no food i was thirsty and you gave me no drink a stranger and you gave me no welcome naked and you gave me no clothing ill and in prison and you did not care for me then they will answer and say lord when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison and not minister to your needs he will answer them amen i say to you what you did not do for one of the least ones you did not do for me and these will go off to eternal punishment but the righteous to eternal life the gospel of the lord a superficial listening or attention to our first reading from the book of leviticus can give one the impression that the christian faith is all about commandments thou shalt not thou shout and this confirms many people's sense that our faith is really about being a good person while this is true there's so much more to the story and our readings today when we attend to them carefully reveal the greater depth involved in being a christian being a catholic you'll notice in that reading from leviticus between the different commandments we hear over and over again i am the lord this declaration that the lord is god punctuates the list of commandments and this is no accident we christians we do not undertake the good works that we do or avoid evil out of some sense of do-gooder-ism or out of a sense of moral superiority no we do what we do and we avoid what we avoid because god is god because god is good because our hearts and minds are lifted up to him and reflecting on him his goodness his mercy his love we imitate him and we try to reflect what we have first received from his goodness to others we all know that wonderful episode of the rich young man approaching jesus and asking what he must do to attain eternal life the rich young man addresses jesus as good teacher and jesus asks the rich young man a strange question why do you call me good this question aimed at the rich young man and aimed at us is meant to stir our hearts and wonder of not what we should do but whom we should follow whose goodness we should take as the guide and example for our lives and of course the answer is meant to be jesus god among us god made human who is the source and origin of all good we seek to do well and avoid evil because of who god is because we desire to be near god and to live in his inexhaustible unlimited light this lesson comes to an even greater clarity in the gospel we heard today where we are told that when we serve the needs of the vulnerable we serve jesus when god the son became human he irrevocably united human weakness to himself so that whenever we encounter human weakness we encounter the mysterious presence of god himself jesus and because of who jesus is because of the poverty he took on our behalf we who love him we who seek to know him we who seek to be with him serve the poor we serve the poor we serve the needy because we desire to be near christ a little practical note in our modern contemporary world we're blessed to have many institutions and governments that serve the poor and that's a good thing but the invitation today from our lord jesus is not simply to farm out service to the poor to those organizations merely by writing a check by all means do that but we're being called to draw close to those in need because in them we encounter jesus we encounter the one who is the lord the one whose example we follow the one whose life we desire to live may we not miss that chance may we not miss the opportunity to draw close to christ to live the life he extends to us and to meet him in our brothers and sisters who are in need turning to the father of mercies we lift up our prayers and petitions our response is have mercy god in your kindness that the christian churches may be signs of service love and mercy to the world we pray have mercy god in your kindness that those elected for baptism may embrace their duty to the poor and marginalized we pray have mercy god in your kindness that the dead may find a place among the righteous we pray have mercy god in your kindness and we pray for peace in the ukraine and a cease fire and for harmony and love to obtain among the nations of the world we pray to the lord mercy on us and lord and kindness good and gracious god look with kindness and compassion on your holy people who cry out to you in their need hear and answer the prayers we offer for we offer them in and through our lord jesus christ light of the world who lives forever and ever amen let me sing of your lord my god let your love come upon your people through your own word lord give us life in your holy keeping happy is my soul [Music] oh take me far from and in your great mercy guide me in your path let me sing of your lord o my god let your love come upon your people [Music] within your lord i choose to live in the path of wisdom i walk ever more let your love come upon [Music] foreign pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice praise the glory of his name the good of all his holy church may this devoured oblation be acceptable to you o lord that by your power it may sanctify our manner of life and gain for us your conciliation and pardon through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with you lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you will that our self-denial should give you thanks humble our sinful pride contribute to the feeding of the poor and so help us imitate you in your kindness and so we glorify you with countless angels as with one voice of praise we acclaim god and earth [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and sean our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom of the power and the glory lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always and with your spirit let us offer each other the sign of peace [Music] lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god ye take away the sins of the world of not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed [Music] so [Music] so [Music] whatsoever you do to the least of my people that you do unto me let us pray we pray o lord that in receiving your sacrament we may experience help in mind and body so that kept safe in both we make glory in the fullness of heavenly healing through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit bow down for the blessing enlighten the minds of your people lord we pray with the light of your glory that they may see what must be done and have the strength to do what is right through christ our lord amen and may the blessing of almighty god the father and the son and the holy spirit come down on you and remain with you forever amen go in peace
