Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary | Notre Dame Cathedral, France

[Music] hello everyone I'm father Reed I'm standing here in the glory of notre-dame Cathedral in Paris thanks for joining me today in praying the sorrowful mysteries of the Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary this incredibly beautiful Cathedral here in Paris the Cathedral dedicated to Our Lady Norodom was built in a time of great illiteracy in Europe and so it's portals its architecture its paintings its beautiful stained glass tell the story of our faith I'm standing here in the choir of the canons and behind me the beautiful pietà showing Mary holding her son Jesus who had just been taken down from the cross the Angels statues around me holding the elements of the passion such as the nails used to secure Jesus to the wood of the Cross the spear that pierced his side the inscription that was placed by Pilate the king of the Jews we here in the glory of this Cathedral its construction was begun in 1163 not completed for another hundred eighty years along the Sin River here in Paris France to offer the sorrowful mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary remembering that our lady to whom this Cathedral is dedicated Our Lady shared in the sorrows of her son who died for us sinners and so we pray together in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit amen I believe in God the Father the Almighty Creator of heaven and earth I believe in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord who was conceived by the Holy Spirit born of the Virgin Mary suffered under Pontius Pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father from there he shall come to judge the living and the dead I believe in the Holy Spirit the Holy Catholic Church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the dead and life everlasting amen our Father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is into heaven especially those who are in most need of thy mercy the first sorrowful mystery the agony of Jesus in the garden if you're a parent you know that you have a special connection with your children a spiritual bond a mother in particular has a deep spiritual bond with her children who saw Mary our Lady and Nora Dom she had an intense awareness of Jesus that only a mother could have with her son when Jesus agonized in the garden over his impending passion and death knowing the suffering that he was to bear knowing that he was to carry our sins to the cross Mary must have had a spiritual sense a very deep knowledge of what her son was carrying in his heart and so as we begin these sorrowful mysteries of the rosary we recall how our lady to whom this grand Cathedral in Paris has been named how she likewise bore sorrowful nosov her son and so we pray our Father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil amen hail Mary full of grace the Lord is with who are in most need of thy mercy the second sorrowful mystery is the scourging of Jesus at the pillar we do not know if Jesus mother was present witnessed his terrible scourging but certainly later on she saw the effects of that terrible scourging she saw the mocks on his body from the whips the blood pouring from the wounds imagine a mother seeing her son in such a terrible state her heart must have been broken Our Lady Norodom we remember her sorrow today the sorrow that she shared with her only Son as he went to his cross our Father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come fires of hell lead all souls into heaven especially those who are in most need of thy mercy the third sorrowful mystery Jesus is crowned with thorns this great Cathedral the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris is the the crowning jewel of all of the churches of Paris likewise we remember in this moment the crown that was placed on our saviors head it was not a crown of gold and beauty like this church but a crown of shame a crown of thorns a crown of pain one of the statues just near me here of the angels surrounding me holds the crown of thorns representing that shame that was placed on Jesus head how ashamed - his mother must have been our lady in seeing her son humiliated such as he was but what a great feeling it must have been for her when she saw her son risen from the dead and crowned with the glory of eternal life the glory of his own divinity remembering that crown of shame and pain that was placed on our Lord's head we asked the Blessed Mother who shared in his sorrow to pray for us our Father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive carries the cross just behind me here in the choir of the canons stands the cross an image of what Jesus carried the wood placed on his back certainly the cross was heavy but heavier still the sin of all humanity that he bore on his shoulders as he walked to Calvary and as he went on his way he met his mother he imagined the sorrow in her heart seeing her only son having been scourge and crowned with thorns humiliated and spat upon carrying the cross to the streets of Jerusalem the holy city to the end of his life with that cross he carried our sins and his mother our lady no trade on she too bore part of that sorrow in her heart our Father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us the fifth the final sorrowful mystery Jesus is crucified behind me here the representation of the pietá no trade on our lady holding the body of her son after he was taken down from the cross on which he was crucified imagine her sorrow as she gazes at the body of her her own son her only son whom she loved so much her son who loved the world who expressed his love and compassion forgiveness in so many ways who was crucified for us for our sins as she bore his body she held the sorrow of the entire world for the sins that have been committed this grands yet dark Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris bares the struggles the history of the French people so as our lady held the body of her son we recall how he died for us he gave His life that we might live our Father who art in heaven hallowed be
