he was manipulative hidden agendas he was deceiving hidden strategies he was full of treachery hidden alliances sound familiar author and speaker John Paul Jackson says the absent spirit is alive and even your home but there's also a counterpart to this spirit it's called the Absalom spirit and this spirit can have serious repercussions so today we're unmasking it and exposing it for what it truly is joining me around the table is Melanie Brando how are you today I'm good have you heard much about the Absalom spirit I have heard a little but there's a lot more interest in the Jezebel we really need to know about absolutely we really need to know about it I'm excited about today okay and a candle welcome thank you glad to be here and I'm excited about today also you have any questions of course I know you know time we all have pressures knowing when John Paul is here Cindy Murdoch our hi dear I'm doing great today you're learning ever learning and loving it yeah I could be a lifetime student I believe yeah is this the best job ever in the whole world oh my goodness here yeah I say that what a blessing what an honor John Paul Jackson welcome again to Table Talk you're one of the favorites around here you know that I love hearing yeah well like a Jezebel spirit this spirit targets leadership but this time through men who seek to be the leader let's see the work of this spirit in the Bible Absalom one of David's sons who sought to topple the kingdom to exalt himself as ruler so tell us a little bit about the Absalom spirit because I want to want to learn about this well the Absalom spirit is another type of spirit that seeks to rule it seeks it seeks for promotion that seeks to be the head of everything it goes about it a different way than maybe the Jezebel spirit does Absalom was the third third son born of David and he incredible incredibly good-looking looking man apparently he was the most beautiful man maybe on the face of the earth got some good hair too a good hair I mean we're talking we're tiny guy we cut is here once a year five to six pounds of the hair came off of this biscuit so he was it was a very very good-looking thick thick head of hair probably from what we're told we're led to believe it was very muscular very athletic you know kind of the prototype of a model to Dave his favorite and David and David's favorite exactly he was the son of the daughter of a the king of Gesher and so he David married the mother in order to form a strategic alliance in order to keep peace between the northern northern area of the Lebanon towards Syria area and then then with and then with Israel and so that's not always a good idea a lot of times when you marry the the enemy's daughter that children don't end up well so Absalom was at being so good-looking and everything he had everything going for him in the kingdom and probably if it wasn't for EM nan who stood in his way probably would have been the next king Wow he was born in Hebron while David was there during the seven and a half years that David spent in Hebron and so he was raised there and it's interesting he ends up going back there later in his life right before becoming becoming King which is exactly what his father started this kingdom in Hebron and so did Absalom started his kingdom in Hebron now where is Solomon in the birth order his was he drawn at this time seventh son and it was a Bathsheba he was either a baby or not yet born okay right here so he was a child so what happened with Absalom what went wrong Absalom had in a way in that way had a tragic experience with the sister meaning he's Amnon the firstborn raped raped his sister and so you have David's son Amnon raping David's daughter by different mother but David's daughter Tamar and so Absalom becomes very angry at this he waits for two years and then he finds a way to lure Amnon to to an event where he has M nan killed now does this very deceitfully because he he asked David to come to the sheep-shearing is what it really was it was a sheep-shearing and it was kind of a festival we're shearing the sheep and we're in the shooting of sheep we're gonna have all this wool number four it's like the harvest in a way we're harvesting all this wool off the sheep and so he invites Amnon to go David his father to go with him David says you know I'm too busy to go to a sheep shearing good why don't you just go ahead and go and says well at least let me take all of your sons and especially Amnon with me that that we'll be able to to celebrate together so so he deceives David he know he knows David isn't going to go but he's trying to make it look like everything is going to be okay so he invites Amnon to go with him and once they get to the sheep shearing he has his servants not hit not he Absalom doesn't kill Amnon his servants fall on our attack Amnon following his orders following his orders and kill and kill Amnon there so he find into something interesting we find that that Absalom develops a way of using other people to accomplish his purposes he has a servants kill Amnon he has a servants later light the field of Joab on fire because Joab wouldn't take him to see his father he later on has invites people to go with him to Hebron so he can as he told David I can pay my vows to the Lord because I said if you ever brought me back to Jerusalem that I would serve the Lord so obviously wasn't serving the Lord prior to that moment so his motivation was never pure motivation at any of those issues was never particulate he was manipulative he was deceiving he was full of treachery and and so all and all these things his servants did everything he didn't he didn't do any of the ill-gotten deed so sins were clean his hands his hand and his heart was correct yeah so David actually when he killed or had Amnon killed David found out about it obviously and punished him and banished him from the kingdom right so I think I think in a way David David did not handle the situation right either he didn't handle the the rape of Tamar in a righteous way at all I mean Amnon was his firstborn son he's probably thinking at that time this is the king the heir to the whole to the whole country how do I kill the heir to my throne because the first born was a logical succession plan but at the same time he still didn't handle right there was an injustice done there was error that was done and David did not follow righteousness ignored it right he ignored the whole thing and finally that allowed a seed of bitterness to develop in into a Absalom's mindset and that seed of bitterness began to grow and probably corrupted everything that he had from that point on he may have already had some trait that was prone to that prior to that because we see a little bit of that and the issue of his sister Tamar when she comes and says you know she finds that she has been raped and he says but don't pay attention to this oh don't don't take this to heart don't don't let this thing enter into your instead of saying I will avenge you that's just insane I'm gonna I'm gonna take care of just for you stay right here we're gonna take care of this right taking her into his arms and anything yes so he just kind of said I'll blow it off you know and then two years later is when he takes when he takes the matter into his own hands so it grew so David David allowed something to happen and his child that he didn't take care of and you see that pattern you see Samuel that didn't take care of that something he saw on his two sons you see Eli who didn't take care of this something he saw his two sons and it festered as those issues grew and jump ugh you know in the New Testament and it talks about the root of bitterness yeah and that it defiles many yes right and you're just every evil every evil works and usually the every evil work is sexual so the roots of Absalom that's one of the things that you talk about the first being pride and rebellion yeah probably pride and rebellion is a root of Absalom so that when when you seize wrong happened you say I will take care of this mess up I can handle this and then the other one is that there is a basic distrust of leadership this is going because they saw leaders maybe not handling things away certainly not the way they would have handled it and so there's a growing distrust of leadership and then the third thing is that they because of that they grow to be self-sufficient and with that self sufficiency I know how to do it best I can take care of this they may know a good way to I know best way to do it and that's what led him to say oh that I was king that's what led him to sit in the gate of the city and hear the complaint of all the people and say here the James oh if I was King I would handle this so differently San Joaquin said of distrust and division right so I got device Edna's distrust David eventually allowed Absalom back into the kingdom and that's when he got in the gate got you know where the people would come and he begin to say those kind of things well the King won't hear you but come over here I was listening yeah exactly but that happened that happened in a way when Tamar was raped and David didn't do something about it immediately and have some tickets on into his own hand he probably formed that thought process David won't do anything about it but I will do something amiss he believed that he's a champion so a lot of hidden things like you mentioned hidden agendas hidden strategies hidden alliances hidden content hidden hatred and hidden revenge right all eventually come from the root of bitterness they come for that one root of bitterness amazing exactly Wow okay well don't go anywhere we'll continue unmasking the Absalom spirit when tabletalk returns well he was the son who would be king even if that meant taking it from his father Absalom's infamous actions led to his own demise yet we still see the spirit of Absalom at work today so the characteristics of Absalom how do we recognize that and how do we deal with it huh well let me give you a practical example of what happened in one particular church that I know it okay so the youth young man comes in becomes a youth pastor the pastor has been at the church at this time for about 24 25 years very well-liked well-respected the community churches growing churches thriving young man comes in and he promotes the young man the young man then wants a little more authority he becomes an assistant pastor wants a little bit more authority and says hey can I become a how about if I did a Saturday night meeting and so the pastors yeah great do a Saturday night meeting and let all that people come that you want to come that I like your style of meeting and that type of things so he he does that meeting then the group begins to grow and he begins to go to the Sunday morning meetings and say you know you probably be a lot happier you seem really hip you seem really with it you seem really insightful and I think you're the type of person that could really help me build this hip new insightful group this meeting on Saturday nights recruiting he starts recruiting and so once he starts recruiting then what happens it's a Saturday night becomes bigger the Sunday morning becomes smaller and then strangely enough the young man then comes to the pastor says I think we need to switch I need to take bring my meetings to Sunday morning and give you go to Saturday night and then once they agreed to do that then he says you know what the reality is your time at this church has been served and he recruits the board members like Absalom recruited Earth NFL who seemed like the Oracle of God the wisdom of God the elder of statesmen of and so he recruits the the nfl's of the church the elders of the church the board members of the church and they come to the pastor to say you actually what we feel like it's time for you to step down and we're going to give the entire church to this young man and so there was no honor at all hello honor which which is totally out of God's lines so what happened did the church ever ever understand what happened or did it you know what happened to him six years later the church doesn't no longer exists Wow six years later and it had over a thousand people Wow going to the six years later to the first master first pastor is retired and is traveling back and forth overseas to Europe and he realizes that was a mistake to allow that young man problem realises it but here at the same time he was like David it was so amazing just says David fled Absalom he this this pastor said you know rather than caused a conflict I will I will flee the church to him and if let's just say it had been God's will for that young man to become pastor then you don't go about it the way with the manipulation in that absolute spirit - a copy on it it would be honor and as he would have honored the man of God who knows that God might have put him in that place eventually well in as we've talked so often anything done that's hidden done in darkness that's where the enemy can come in and corrupt so anything that's done in the light that's where God's gonna honor it right it's not it's not in this particular case it wasn't bad that that a person was made youth pastor wasn't bad that the person was promoted to be an assistant pastor but it was the process of lack of honor self-promotion on the young man's part lack of honoring and then removing his spiritual father and the Bible says that if you honor your mother and father you things will be well with you and you'll live a long life the same thing is true in the spiritual world you failed to honor your mother and father in the spirit world and you will have your church your ministry everything that you have will be short-lived it won't live much longer after you failed on your spiritual parents I was at a youth meeting as an adult and I had some some teenagers that I was taking care of and the youth pastor locked the doors and said you're gonna be running this church in five years and so I don't care what anybody else has to say we're locking all the parents and big church people out so that we can take care of business in here and proceeded to have his meeting you know breaking the authority of the parents was the first sign and it said a really really good youth pastor does all that he can to promote the parent that's what Absalom did he separated all the all the soldiers I mean the young men in the military the old guys weren't a military anymore and he says come with me down to Hebron and help me pay my vows I didn't even tell them what he was doing then when he gets him down to Hebrew in essence he closes the doors and says oh by the way guys there's what we're doing when when I do this and you and everybody at the same time yell Absalom is the king Absalom is King and Hebron and that that's the same principle that you were talking about I'm John Paul what about the characteristic of false humility yeah well it's like it they helpless the help you can almost hear Absalom in the gate going I am so helpless I can't help you I'd love to help you oh that I was king I would I would really really help you when I'm helpless right yes and how your I understand how you're feeling yeah I've been there I know what you're going through and and so that's a false humility it's really pride but it's but it's it's false humility and manipulation as well it doesn't manipulate some people because you find the want of the people then you meet the want of the people and they make you their leader how they promote themselves this selfish ambition that was another one I was thinking about our pastor pastor Robert Morris was talking about different opportunities that would arise in the church and he's talking about how allowing God to open those doors and how that when in he may be he said I may have been thinking about a particular individual that had gifting but then they may come to me and say you know I think you should put me in that position he said I would immediately say no you're not ready to be in that position so there is something to that manipulation that you'll see with this that you need to be careful about especially those in ministry do you think John John Paul do you think that Absalon was narcissistic uh at least narcissistic everything focused on him you know what did I look like what are they do today you look me I will lead you I will guide you David doesn't do this everything was pointing back to him and manipulated their thinking towards what they thought about it becomes a narcissistic entitlement right and then right seems sincere but only if you help him get what he wants that's it you for example Joab Joab was one that went to David and said David please you bring bring the kid back bring bring him back into town and and finally David gave me okay through a theatrical deal of by Joab and another woman David said okay bring the young man back back into town but don't let him see my face you can't see my face once it comes back into town but he can come back in to end Jerusalem so now for two years Absalom is saying to Joab hey this is Joab that helped they helped him return he's saying get me to see the King get me to see the King get me to see the king it wouldn't happen so what does what does he do was Absalom do he hires our tells us serpents go out and set Joe ABS fields afire he said all the barley has burnt it to the ground and then Joab will come and get me to see the king so here Joab is the one that got him back to Jerusalem he's not even grateful for that that is right whatever it takes yeah as long as you served my purpose I'm with you but what you don't serve and look you said that Absalom is is a polar opposite of David I'm thinking about that story when Absalom actually garnered the troops and others and David had to flee the city remember that true but as he's leaving and he gets to a certain region there were some that recognized him as the one who took Saul's place and begin to shout at him in silly eye and yeah and David didn't do anything do you remember that yeah in fact they were going to they were gonna kill Jimmy I and a soldier's word they'd said what did become perhaps the Lord is speaking through this and so if it isn't the Lord then then it'll all be taken care of later if it is the Lord then far be it for me to attack but I'm still in would've absolutely killed Jimmy I in a heartbeat yeah so that show that did wrote a heart about it does David was anointed by Samuel Absalom was anointed by himself they both began their kingdoms and he bran but David was anointed by God Absalom was not anointed by Absalom made himself a golden chariot and had 50 soldiers run in front of the chariot to announce he was coming so everybody would bow down once he got into town once he got into their village everybody had to bow down because 50 soldiers ran in advance preparing everybody told them what to do who David never had that he never had people bowed down to him he wouldn't even take a drink of water in Epsilon's cave and that but at the end of the day yes when all was said in no sudden done David is still standing David is still standing and Absalom is hung in a tree yes I his hero there was one who was the one that thrust the sword Joab Joab the one that had helped him one that was like we can't deal with this anymore and even then David was sad yeah oh yeah even then David that was his son and he had compassion he was sad yeah job had to come back to me say David you're dishonouring all those who try almost died for you trying to protect you by mourning over the Sun so it's it's absolute an interesting story isn't it for sure well after the break we look at the similarities and differences between Jezebel and Absalom and how that impacts the way we deal with them we'll be right back well when a manipulative spirit wages war against leadership it can tear that business or a church apart so we have to stay vigilant to keep this spirit from taking root so we need to know how to recognize it and we need to know how to address it properly we only have a couple of minutes tell us the differences and how we can recognize and deal with it well you see Jezebel stole the heart of a king and Absalom stole the heart of the people you see I have sums rule to the people Jezebel's rule to the king you see absence wanted to overthrow the king where Jezebel's want to use the king and so so these are some of the some of the up polar opposites Absalom manipulates the people just real manipulate the King I have some set up a stone pillar named himself that stone pillar and Jezebel set up temples of God none of our God but of Balaam s rod exactly the false skull which were poles and altars exactly so they each set up monuments they each they each wanted to rule but they ruled in different ways and so there were both manipulators they were both manipulators Absalom anointed himself to be king Jezebel married the king to become the queen so they both rose rose by their own ways but but polar opposite ways in some respects and similar in similar ways they both manipulated they both controlled they both killed anybody that got in the way Navis vineyard and you know you won't get to sell up we hire guys to get false testimony against you we're gonna wipe you out so the Mafia is it was like a mafia exactly and that Absalom had kind of an abscess of mafia didn't eat like you burned Joe ABS I phenol to get what are you guys like Saddam Hussein's sons yeah we're similar exactly no carrying out I'm gonna carry out the desire I'm gonna carry out the desires of the king so the servants carried out the desires of Absalom here's what's going on so you sit you interesting that abyssal must humming by the hair of his head hi place and Jezebel was thrown down thrown down from a high place both of them enticed people with influence they all wanted to have the influence so one how the influence was different but they still wanted that influence within the kingdom how do you cut him off like a pastor's watching right now I see John Paul I know exactly what you're talking about how do I deal with this Absalom spirit well you get you got to deal with the spirit itself in the individual you've got to be able to say this is lack of Honor this is lack of the honoring your spiritual mother and father there's a lack of honoring the anointed of God how many times of David say don't touch the Lord's anointed you touch those on it now I'm gonna kill you David didn't touch you suppose there killed the guys that killed ish boost set the Sun up the son of Saul killed the guys who said they killed salt killed him - David recognize I'm gonna honor those who does honor even if they're doing evil I'm gonna honor them and so we the pastor has to understand that this guy's not honoring and when you lose the one that when that your spiritual son refuses to honor you then you know you have an absolute Oh John Paul it doesn't matter who is manipulating you if you stop allowing the manipulation it doesn't work right any so dr. so when we're being manipulated it's very good if we've got the courage to say this is manipulation manipulation only works through agreement yes that's why there's the power immigrants stop agreeing but it doesn't work so you say to the pastor would you've got to cut that gotta cut that I hear you got to recognize you've got to cut that off and you've got to then commend the young man arts say you've got to repent and that's recognize what you're doing it they don't repent you have to remove and sometimes they will repent sometimes it will repent absolutely all righty in the early stages it's a whole lot easier to catch up on the plants small that when it becomes a tree all right well we're at a time I want to thank John Paul Jackson for joining me today you're dealing with Absalom spirit please call us let us pray with you today especially want to encourage those of you that are in ministry understand that God is with you I hope this is encourage you today I know it's helped some of you thank you ladies for joining me thank you John Paul II will come back god bless you thank you
