ladies and gentlemen i'm veto let's get into it today we're talking about our good friend from star wars john boyega finn a character that uh if you've watched some of my previous videos on the star wars franchise i think was tragically mishandled i feel bad for john boyega i don't feel too bad because he is still a hollywood actor who was probably paid millions of dollars for that part but i would imagine that as an actor he cares hopefully more about his legacy as an actor being able to show off himself as a as a true artist than he does money the money doesn't hurt i'm sure but you do as an actor want to show people your range and your abilities and uh he didn't get to do that really what's so weird is that the first movie begins with finn i mean it begins with poe kylo ren and finn is almost at the center of it as the stormtrooper who obviously learns a valuable lesson about killing his bad keep keep seeing that theme in media but he does seem like the central character at the outset of the movie we follow his journey as he crash lands discovers rey and then ray sort of morphs into the main character but uh finn seemed like he was the counterpart like it was gonna be about rey and finn each going on their own individual journeys and working together it also looked like finn i mean if you put a lightsaber in a guy's hand in the first act of a story don't you gotta make him a jedi by the third act isn't that the rule of star wars film making you can't just hand a guy a lightsaber and be like yeah that was just a one-time thing i think i think you gotta follow up on that theme now i have some thoughts in my head about what they should have done or should not have done i think it all went off the rails with the last jedi where ryan johnson said no this is ray's story pretty much exclusively finn is a goofy sidekick character who's gonna go on a very pointless b mission uh if you wanted to follow up on the maybe finnish force sensitive thing the second movie was the place you had to do it and ryan did was not interested and uh then you get to the third movie and there's just no time left to do anything with finn he basically he had his arc already in the first two movies the arc was i don't know i'm glad i have a friend in rey and then in the second movie he learns well not only do i have a friend in rey but i have a friend in the resistance now i learned not to what it what's the stupid line don't fight what you hate save what you love and where do you go from there there's nothing anyway we got this this tragedy we have a gq interview with john boyega and uh man john boyega he's out here he's throwing uh he's throwing blows man he's taking shots he is not on the disney leash i mean we saw this before there was an interview they asked her would you ever do anything on disney plus or just would you ever do more star wars stuff he goes you ain't gonna disney plus me not gonna happen this man uh this man is uh done with the disney experience he doesn't mind what he doesn't mind burning that bridge he's moving on to different cinematic experiences so this is a this is an interview it's a lot of john boyega talking about how his race impacts his uh performance and his ability to work as an actor it's powerful stuff man there's a lot going on in the world and he talks about you know he spoke at a black lives matter rally i recommend reading all this john boyega seems like a good guy he's got some uh he seems like he's had a hard life he's been through a lot and i imagine as a as a black man trying to make it in an industry which frankly does not like to see black protagonists a lot of the time i mean we saw it with the chinese poster where they're like we don't like we don't like black people in china can you shrink them on the poster you know we even have theories that maybe he was sidelined because chinese audiences reacted negatively to his character obviously that's speculation very baseless speculation this isn't one of those channels where i tell you i uh i know everything that happened behind the scenes with star wars and no with this speculation but it's reasonable speculation black men as actors i mean the majority of the audience is white guys and a lot of white guys want to see a white protagonist that's just uh that's the way it is so it's hard as a black man to be sidelined in the way that he was so let me find the part in this article where he uh talks about star wars he was very excited in 2015 when he was cast in star wars which makes sense very exciting and uh it was a weird time i took on too much work he says working on too much let's get to where he talks some crap about disney there's a lot of there's a lot of stuff in here there we go here we go it's difficult to maneuver he says let's start here with the lucas branded film in the elephant oh let's start up it starts a little bit more here we go sorry i'm having trouble finding the exact part when black men grow out their hair it's very powerful and it caused him to question his place in the sausage machine of big ticket movie making that made him wonder if there was room for someone who looked like him to exist on his own terms in an industry built to white standards and white norms that's what i'm talking about i mean uh hollywood is you see your leading man is a white guy and it's it's from a marketing perspective i get it because your audience is a lot of white guys and just the the way race works and it's a little weird is that you decide to identify more with a white protagonist than with a black protagonist or at least that's the way it is for a lot of people i'm not going to say that's a racist thing maybe subconsciously it's a bias thing but it is hard when you are not representative of the majority population so it's hard to find representation in film you are you're seen as less marketable than a white action hero i mean we saw this with marvel talking about how i believe it was ike pearl mudder i forget is he pre was he president of disney at the time uh was basically telling kevin feige uh don't make black panther stop putting all these black superheroes in here they'll never sell don't make any women superheroes it'll never sell kevin feige uh was gonna quit he told like pearl motor he's like this is absurd you know our movies i understand you want to make money but it's marvel it's comics they should inspire everybody why not give black moviegoers black children a hero who uh looks like them who gives them the sense that someone with dark skin can be just as heroic with someone with white skin it's a part of hollywood that needs to be acknowledged i know some people are listed on this and i don't know maybe you maybe you think i'm um some bleeding heart you know oh it's not that bad veto i don't know man i i try to put myself in the shoes of a black man i think yeah it would suck to be trying to break into hollywood know that i'm limited in what roles i can try to get based on this weird uh perception of marketability in the afterglow of star wars uh he's talking about he changed his hair and uh he was worried that this would be seen as a radical thing that we want to see a black man with that you know close shaved haircut he had and force awakens a respectable looking haircut and he says well that's not me i want to wear my hair like this and he knew it might even ruffle some feathers just changing his hair well that's the way that's the way it is this is boyega's first substantial interview since finishing the franchise rise of skywalker how does he reflect on his involvement and the way the newest trilogy was concluded and here's the big quote that is going around and a lot of people have made a lot out of this quote a lot of people are i don't know it's some people are interpreting this quote in i think a sensationalized way i think just take this quote as an honest uh statement from a man who attempted to be a part of something and was ultimately disappointed with the result you know i i know that people want to rant about kathleen kennedy's agenda and i don't know i don't really get into that i think mistakes get made you hire the wrong guy for the job i mean hiring ryan johnson was a mistake uh and clearly a mistake that ended up doing wrong by mr boyega what i would say to disney is don't bring out a black character market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are he was front and center on that force awakens poster holding that lightsaber man i mean it's an outside observer you would think my god this guy's uh our hero or at least our secondary hero he's got a lightsaber that's the most important thing in star wars although luke skywalker hates lightsabers now don't market them to be more important in the franchise they are and then push them off to the side it's not good i'll say it straight up and here we talk about is femme the former stormtrooper wielded a lightsaber in the first film before being somewhat nudged to the periphery somewhat nudged to the periphery i mean i guess he got the b plot and last jedi but uh by the time ryze skywalker came around there was nothing for him to do other than talk to talk to his new black girlfriend it was just basically a clone of him oh you used to be a storm trooper i used to be a stormtrooper wow good writing jj just write the same character again not jj what's his name chris terrier worst writer in hollywood what a goof uh he is talking about other people of color in the cast naomi aki okay well this is this is weird that's that's what's her name right hold on naomi aki is that the girl who played uh what do you call it did she oh no no no okay i thought he was talking about the lady who played maz kanata because everybody for some reason they always point to maz kanata as like the diversity in the movies they're like oh look it's uh it's her you know she's look maz kanata is diversity and you're like yeah not really anybody could have done that voice or uh motion capture you don't get to rely on that uh but he's not talking about her he is talking about the woman who played i don't even remember her name is how much of a non-character she was jaina i think jonna jonas she didn't do anything in the movie she wrote a space horse that's it all right well she got sidelined kelly marie tran and even oscar isaac yeah i don't know i feel like oscar isaac oscar isaac actually came out of those movies i think uh looking better than finn i think they gave him more screen time even though he was i i the first movie kind of made it seem like poe was just like some secondary character he's just gonna be like this cool x-wing pilot in the background helping everybody out but uh he ended up getting a whole bunch of screen time oh god there was three plots in that i forgot the last jedi has a c plot so you have the a plot of ray the b plot of finn and the c plot of poe fighting with uh what's your name uh the purple-haired lady what a convoluted mess of a movie i forgot that there's three storylines going on there you didn't need that stuff with poe really it wasn't all right whatever uh oscar isaac calls him a brother from guatemala i love that oscar isaac and uh and john boyega are friends i love that and he knows some people say he's crazy or making it up but the reordered character hierarchy of the last jedi was particularly hard to take you guys knew what to do with daisy ridley you knew what to do with adam driver but when it come to the other people when it came to kelly marie tran what came to john boyega you know [ __ ] all so what do you want me to say what they want you to say is i enjoyed being a part of it it was great experience nah nah nah this is this is biting to disney i'll take that deal when it is a great experience they gave all the nuance to adam driver all the nuance to daisy ridley and let's be honest daisy knows this adam knows this everyone knows i'm not exposing anything yeah i think about the last jedi i was thinking about it today after reading these i mean we talked about this before the last jedi is where things went off the rails it's where we lost focus i i i i it ended up okay ryan johnson decided i like rey and i like kylo ren and i think they are the only interesting characters like really what what was finn [Music] finn was all over the place in that second movie goes to the casino planet learns that both sides are bad because they both sell weapons to both sides then he learns not to trust people because he trusts benicio del toro but then he gets betrayed then he fights captain phasma which doesn't really feel connected to anything as as you remember i made the point and a lot of people gave me crap for this a lot of people said well that's stupid that's a that's such a generic star wars story and i feel like i should have addressed this at some point my idea was in the first movie you have a fight with uh with finn versus a random stormtrooper and i went why don't you have him fight phasma not only do we have this character phasma that you know you've hyped up and everybody wants to know more about her but i it just would have more relevance than him fighting some guy some people have like sent me messages and they're like well if you read the comics that guy was like his best friend i don't care i'm not gonna read the comics why don't you give me a character that you want me to learn more about that is clearly exciting and has a visual style and why don't you make her important to the plot and i said she should fight finn and win the first battle you also have you have a chance for dialogue there like good good dialogue you know have she could have her yelling at finn where she goes you're a traitor you know i always knew that you you were no good you know you were the weakest in your class you'll never amount to anything it could really have set the stage for showing what finn has grown up with as as just a random stormtrooper as meat for the grinder you know to have to have this captain berating him and telling him he's trash and you realize ah what a terrible organization you know she could say ever since you were a kid you know i knew i don't know how long she's been with him but ever since you were young i knew you were scum deep down i always knew you'd never amount to anything and today you know you've proved it to me could it could have been interesting i feel and uh well what i said should happen from theirs in the second movie they should have another fight where finn they fight to a stand still we see wow finn's becoming quite a fighter in the last movie he got his ass kicked in this movie he's trained he's a more proficient he can't defeat her yet but uh he battles her to stand still and then the third movie have him finally overcome phasma a lot and the criticism i got from a lot of people is well that's that's so boring that's so predictable you know we've seen that in other movies i'll say this yes it is predictable it is it is a trope of sorts the character who starts off weaker than their bully and then slowly acquires the skills to take them down but my thought is you're trying something new with this ray kylo dynamic okay you're trying some new weird themes which you know there could have been some interesting stuff to do there so why don't you do the cool weird new themes about you know is the force good or the jedi good whatever you can have all that as rey's storyline and why not in the background do a you know i hate to say it's simple safe storyline for finn for the audience to hold on to something where they go wow all this stuff with ray and kylo wanting to kill the past this is all very complicated uh what's finn up to oh he's still fighting the silver lady this this i understand this is a little bit of uh i can relax my brain for a little bit finn's learning to find himself he's becoming a hero hopefully becoming a force sensitive i mean once you again i think of it like chekhov's gun i don't know if you know the chekhov's gun uh rule of storytelling if you put a gun on the mantle place in the first act of a play someone needs to fire the gun in the third act that's the rule if you put a gun on the mental place and no one ever fires it why did you put it on the metal place to begin with and the lightsaber which finn wields is basically chekhov's gun i mean he does wield it in the first movie but it seems like by the third movie he should be proficient with it he should be a fighter who wields a lightsaber a bit of a a jedi but instead they left the lightsaber on the mantle place it was a very again i mean we've talked about this a million times you gotta plan out the story you can't play it by ear you can't you can't be setting up this stuff where it's like oh finn and kylo ren have a connection he's got a lightsaber maybe he's force sensitive and then just expect ryan johnson to know what to do with it i'm i don't even know if i can blame ryan johnson because it was just a stupid idea to begin with to bring in a second guy and tell him to pick back up on it i i can understand getting a little lost in the weeds you write a script and then you get to the end of it you're like ah i forgot about that thing where finn was a jedi i don't know i mean i still blame ryan johnson you really need to but i blame ryan johnson but i also remember they only had two years to make that movie that is an accelerated production schedule okay it's not like you can sit down and spend a year writing the script you need the script done in like i don't know two three months so you can just get moving on the production it's just a mess all around uh anyway i've gotten i've gotten way away from this let's take a look here he talks about the systematic mistreatment of black characters and blockbusters they're always scared they're always sweating what a what an idea what a lion he's got a point uh they're just running around oh geez always i mean i feel like he was reduced to comic relief he was he was turned from instead of being a hero he became like a goofball and then by the third movie he's just yelling out rey and i don't know it's a nightmare and what he sees is the relative salvage job that jj abrams performed on the rise of skywalker and this is surprising to me he says everybody needs to leave my boy alone he wasn't even supposed to come back and try to save your [ __ ] there's a lot there's a lot in that line right there save your [ __ ] is a uh we got to think about this line for a second that that line right there indicates because disney doesn't want us to think this the fans have always said after the last jedi star wars fandom was in a terrible place and disney was scrambling to fix it and disney's narrative would be oh no no no no star wars was star wars was fine you know the fandom was fine everything's fine we just decided to get jj abrams as a director it wasn't it wasn't like oh we've got to fix the last jedi the last jedi is a great film there's no problems with it no uh disney disney knew disney knew okay we goofed we goofed even though the critics loved it for some reason i don't understand it uh we have to save this movie this is boyega i don't know if anyone else has confirmed this other than rumors and leaks no one on the the principal cast i think has confirmed this that jj abrams was brought in to try and save the franchise obviously boyega thinks it was an impossible task i don't think it was an impossible task and uh i have a video that i am working on about how i think you could have salvaged that third movie um but it does seem like he is on good terms with jj abrams uh i don't know i wonder what terms he's on with ryan johnson uh i i feel like his anger is directed solely at that second movie which sidelined everything he acknowledges it was an amazing opportunity and led to a lot of good career stuff but to dismiss these words as merely professional bitterness or paranoia is to miss the point his motivation is to show the frustrations and difficulties of trying to operate within what feels like a permanently rigged system he is trying to let you know what it is like to have a boyhood dream ruptured by the toxic realities of the world now here he talks a little bit about uh the reaction to the film now i i always felt this was overblown that some people said oh you can't have a black storm trooper they're supposed to be clones blah blah blah blah first of all i hate to say it i think the guys who were saying that are just dummies i don't think they're necessarily racist ah some of them are probably racist uh but some of them probably just really did think that stormtroopers are all supposed to be clones but i mean by this point i assume most clones have died off um but my thought is i think this was a small contingent of people i don't remember a large number of people saying you can't have a black storm trooper maybe i'm wrong i'm not i'm not john boyega i don't know how much of this came his way obviously nobody in my circles cares in fact i was excited i'm like black guy in star wars i know lando's in star wars too but a black like main protagonist or what we thought was gonna be a protagonist awesome i love it and a lady protagonist yeah that's new too i like new stuff i like i like things i haven't seen before anyway so finn reacted to uh or sorry boyega reacted to these people who are upset with a instagram post get used to it um and then he talks about what it is like being the only black cast member says i'm the only cast member who had their own unique experience of that franchise based on their race let's just leave it like that it makes you angry with a process like that makes you more militant it changes you because you realize i got given this opportunity but i'm in an industry that wasn't even ready for me nobody else in the cast had people saying they were going to boycott the movie because they were in it nobody else had uproar and death threats sent to their instagram saying black this and black that and you shouldn't be a stormtrooper nobody else had that experience but yet people are surprised that i'm that way that's my frustration just john boyega i think justifying his anger you know because i think he did go to that black lives matter rally and he was you know talking about the mistreatment he felt he'd experienced and uh it is true that we do not understand what he went through i don't know what he went through i mean i i have no access to it as instagram dms but uh clearly he believes that he he experienced i mean let's be clear he experienced things that you know adam driver did not experience i think ray or uh daisy ridley probably dealt with some sexist trolls uh but something someone like adam driver you know he's a white guy you know the number of people who are going to be sexist or racist towards them are more limited let's put it that way uh he says he's made peace with it he had some therapy but he does not i like the sidelining of people of color and tentpole properties i get it man i get it uh i i recommend you read this uh this interview here i wish they had the whole transcript of the whole interview unfortunately it's a lot of uh quotes he's that have been pulled not the whole transcript but uh it's a very interesting situation john boyega i i feel bad that you were sidelined and i i so many people have said i mean we would have liked to see him as a jedi or some i mean in the third movie i don't know what's cut i don't know what's on the cutting room floor but but finn finn's jedi power and i make fun of this in my video is the ability to sense what spaceship has an active navigation beacon that's that's uh come on why don't how about in the third movie you know how about that part with that uh when they're sinking in the desert how about finn you know uses the force to grab a rope or something or have him grab have him grab a lightsaber from across the room just or him do a force push on somebody uh you could have done something that shows him using the force like ray's like how did you do that and he goes yeah about that uh something's been going on i've been i've been developing these powers and uh yeah maybe i can help out a little bit hey maybe when we go fight the emperor uh you know i'll come by i'll come help yeah but we did we didn't get any of that this whole star wars experience it's just been sad it's sad for the actors primarily i would say i well it's it's more sad for the fans the fans really got screwed here because we were told we're like it won't be like the prequels it's going to be new we've learned we've learned from the mistakes of george lucas and we are going to give you a classic star wars experience like you've come to love and desire you know thrilling adventure lightsaber battles whatever else and i i it's hard to know who to point fingers at kathleen kennedy is the obvious target uh and that's fair i mean she was in charge she's the president of lucasfilm uh yeah i feel bad for the actors i i even feel bad for like daisy ridley and uh i i i feel bad for adam driver who were just great actors who were given just nothing to work with uh just complete nonsense i'm surprised that boyega gives jj abrams a pass um i mean i get it where he's saying look man he wasn't even supposed to be there he did what he could all right well that's nice of him but i i do think there was a lot more he could have done but we didn't get it i get i get i always say i'm like yeah i don't really care about star wars not that big a deal but i i do feel this weird i feel i feel bad for you guys out there who are like hardcore star wars fans you know who you collect the action figures and you read the comic books and you read the novels and you play all the video games you know even though i'm not one of those guys i don't have a i'm not a die-hard star wars guy i think about all the fans out there who were just so excited and and star wars is a great franchise uh you know this is such a stereotypical thing to say but i love the original trilogy i really do after the prequels i i want nothing more i wanted really nothing more to do with that franchise i'm like i don't care about anything else now prequels kind of ruined the whole expanded universe for me but that original trilogy uh fascinates me on so many levels especially a new hope a lot of people say empire is their favorite i love a new hope it's it it hits the right notes for me just just pure good verse evil heroes journey that that scene at the end in the throne room where the rebels are all you together luke and han and chewbacca heroes who have triumphed over evil uh getting their getting their due rewards getting their medals standing proudly at the end of the hall it's beautiful to me and i can't think of anything like i'm trying to think of a beautiful moment in any of these three films anything that i really looked at it and felt that that sense of awe that sense of how how do you term it just the idea that there's something more to life as crazy as that might sound the idea that doing good is rewarded that you can live a life like luke skywalker that you can win a great battle over evil uh i can't think of anything i felt nothing watching any of those movies i was supposed ryan johnson really wanted me to feel that way when luke skywalker died on a rock i felt nothing i did not feel the accomplishment or j.j abrams giving chewbacca medal at the zero hour oh look chewie got the medal finally i feel nothing there's nothing there so mr boyega i i hope i i it seems like this has been a better experience for you i'm sorry and but i i hope i think you've proven yourself as a competent actor it sounds like you're getting new projects hopefully projects honestly that are more meaningful than a holo disney franchise film you know which kind of seemed to turn into a quick cash grab two year turnarounds on those movies my god cash grab of all cash grabs slow it down two years to make a to make three movies or sorry two years between each of the three movies it's not enough time you didn't put the effort in you got you got dollar signs in your eyes disney you said we'll make a star wars movie every year it'll be just like marvel we'll just be printing money i don't know what else to say it's disappointing ladies and gentlemen thank you for watching sorry if this is a depressing video i've been i've been a depressing person lately i need to read some positive news i need to make some positive videos if you can think of any uh happy news feel free to send it my way more cool videos coming soon i'm working on some cool stuff man it's taken me a while because i mean you've seen my videos they're long man my last uh my star wars video my it's like an hour long and i'm hoping to do more big videos like that but you got to be patient with me it does take a lot of time to put that stuff together stick with me don't forget to like and subscribe and john boyega i look forward to seeing your next piece of work good luck buddy
