Why I Don't Hate Captain Marvel

[Music] [Music] I didn't want this I didn't ask for this I was trying to stay out of it I never asked for this but no matter what I do they keep dragging me back in okay I just I just want to live my life just want to live my life make my stupid YouTube videos talk about movies that I like or I don't like whatever just movies it's not important you know but no apparently I'm a criminal I'm a bad horrible person because I didn't like the Star Wars movie what guy sends me a message on Twitter says hey there's an article on The Telegraph The Telegraph famous British newspaper it's been around since the 1800s a pillar of the journalistic community he says there's an article and they mention your Star Wars review now in any other world I would be happy I'd be like wow a famous British newspaper is talking about a piece of content I made how fantastic for me they must have really enjoyed my insight on plot and character building and all sorts of things like that I'm so excited to find out what they said but I know the world in which we live and the world in which we live doesn't work like that not even slightly so I click on the article what do you think was I right or was I wrong is it a positive view of my video or is it negative let's find out the Captain Marvel trolls don't just hate female superheroes they hate cinema itself all right let's read this one YouTube wants to radicalize me against Captain Marvel or at least that's one conclusion to be drawn from the fact of video title debris Larson is ruining Marvel has been constantly appearing in my up next Q ever since it was uploaded last week okay so there's a new YouTube video by bandit incorporated I think I've seen some of his videos before and he says brie Larson is ruining Marvel probably a bit of clickbait I mean the Captain Marvel movie wasn't even out when he uploaded this but whatever YouTube is all about clickbait I haven't watched this video I don't really care but I think there are some valid criticisms of brie Larson I've talked about her on Twitter a bit I don't really want to get into the fight because it's not a fight I can win cuz look at me guys who look like me aren't allowed to have opinions on strong independent women I will still put my opinion out there but I know it will be instantly dismissed by people who hate the LBG community still I was a little weirded out when brie Larson said that a wrinkle in time is not for white men I do not need a 40-year old white dude to tell me what didn't work for him about a wrinkle in time it wasn't made for him a wrinkle in time was a mass-market Disney movie aimed at everybody I thought so her saying that white men shouldn't be allowed to critique it or that their critiques are invalid it's a little weird but what I say brie Larson is ruining Marvel I'd see Captain Marvel first of all and second of all I I don't usually blame the actor or actresses for the movies being bad I typically blame that on the director and the producer and the people who were supposed to be in charge of assembling the whole team so no I don't think brie Larson's ruining Marvel so I should not be in this article hopefully hopefully they leave me alone but they don't okay still it makes a change from the video sharing sites nearly year-long campaign to turn me against Star Wars the last Jedi via a 20-minute polemic what is polemic I see that word sometimes polemic a controversial argument as one against some opinion doctrine etc I learned a new word thanks Telegraph now let's get back to you [ __ ] on me a 20 minute polemic called why Star Wars the last Jedi is a complete cinematic failure Oh Lord okay which was shunted my way when I watched anything film related on the site now I keep getting this complaint I keep seeing this complaint everywhere that YouTube is suggesting my video to people and they keep claiming it's part of some weird Nazi algorithm like YouTube's trying to make them watch my Star Wars review because it's gonna turn them into alt right white supremacists or whatever the hell dude my video is not about that at all and I don't know why I keep seeing the same complaint where they're like oh it's another Jordan Peterson Ben Shapiro in cell man-baby I'm like dude I don't even watch Ben Shapiro at all Jordan Peterson I find interesting but I don't really like subscribe to all of his stuff I've watched a couple of his videos so why do I keep getting lumped in with these guys cuz of a [ __ ] star it makes no sense why are these people connecting a dislike of Star Wars with like far-right weirdo politics I don't get it dude and I want to point this out if you go on YouTube okay real quick if you see a recommendation that you don't like and you want it to stop showing up watch this okay I'm gonna go to these dots click on the dots I'm not interested it's gone there that was so [ __ ] easy okay anyone can do that but instead they get on [ __ ] Twitter or they write a whole [ __ ] newspaper article about oh my god the evil Star Wars video keeps showing up in my just don't [ __ ] watch it they keep showing up in your feed cuz it has 5 million views because the people who watch it sit around for the entire 20 minute length so the algorithm which is an unfeeling computer that just processes data goes look everybody's watching this video 99% of the people who watch it like it and watch the whole thing so yeah it suggests it based on that it's a good video ok I put a lot of work into it it's really funny I think it's pretty insightful so [ __ ] it if you really love Star Wars and you want to watch it ok didn't just click that [ __ ] button dude stop giving me [ __ ] God now here's where I start getting like pissed off I know I'm already pissed off ok I'm angry because I'm just going through in my head the last year of my reputation being run through the mud because I made a Star Wars video but this is insane okay after finally watching both yesterday I noticed do they share a modus operandi I hope I pronounced that right as do the many others in the same vein which have now overrun my recommended list step 1 identify a perceived politically progressive bias say that 5 times fast in either the film itself or the people who make them ok so he's saying my video identifies a progressive bias in Star Wars and I'm thinking on it ok my video covered a lot of different topics ok my video was not just focused on one thing and I feel like he's being very disingenuous by trying to pretend that it was all about whatever the hell this is so what is the progressive bias I identified and I assume he's referring to the part where I talk about the film's feminist message which is I guess controversial ok probably the most controversial part of the video because we're talking about feminism which is a touchy subject for a lot of people and I want to say this I support a lot of feminist values if you watch my recent video about the DC Comics movies I spend a lot of time talking about you know female characters should be written better that shouldn't be written as victims you know there's a lot of like feminist stuff that you know I'm like I'm totally on board with it I just thought that in the movie Rian Johnson did the exact opposite of what he set out to do he was trying to make the point that you know you had this hothead male pilot who refused to listen to Authority because that authority was a woman and it ended up making everything go crazy and the plan got screwed up all because he didn't trust women the problem is that the woman he was supposed to trust was incompetent like she was bad at her job if you are the commanding officer in a military and you have a crew who is freaking out they're like oh my God we're gonna die we have no idea what's going on your job is to keep your crew under control to listen to their fears and their worries and tell them listen yes we have a plan everything's gonna be fine we can win this thing she didn't do that okay and that's why there was a mutiny okay and nine times out of ten a mutiny is the fault of the commanding officer okay you didn't do a good job of keeping your crew feeling good they started panicking you didn't do anything about it and there was a mutiny and I think that's her fault the movie wanted me to take away the moral of oh he was you know being sexist if he hadn't have been sexist everything would have been fine but I took away the opposite message which was wow this is some incompetent leadership from a woman too bad a man's not in charge I'm not actually saying that I'm totally okay with male or female leaders I just think the movie did the opposite of what it was setting out to do I think you could have made that trust women narrative work although I kind of don't like turning Powe into a sexist he was like my favorite character so seeing him disrespect women I don't like it but whatever you could have made it work a lot better than it works in the last Jedi anyway back to the article okay identify a politically progressive bias and I guess that's the feminism in the movie which again I don't hate feminism I just think it was very badly used in the last Jedi as a theme okay step two and this is [ __ ] okay I know I'm already mad but this is like the part that probably makes me the most bad because it's just insane step two claim that said bias flies in the face of the values of the fans this is complete horseshit I said nothing of the sort because here's the thing I like the original trilogy when I was a kid I liked Star Wars as much as every other kid on the playground okay it was very popular I owned a Luke Skywalker action figure you know I bought Star Wars cards whatever but then the prequels came out and I fell out of love with Star Wars I was like all right it's not really for me anymore I feel like they've kind of ruined the story so I'll say this I would not call myself a Star Wars fan I mean look around my room look at all this dumb [ __ ] I buy toys and collectibles and video games and everything else I own so much crap I have so much garbage all around my house and I'm looking around I'm like yeah I don't have anything to do with Star Wars for Christmas one year my dad bought me a remote-control bb8 for some reason and I sold it on eBay cuz I don't want Star Wars stuff I'm not that into Star Wars again I love the original trilogy great movies but I love a lot of movies okay and I don't call myself fans of those movies they're just movies that I like so how the [ __ ] would I know what the values of the fans are at no point when I was talking about the feminist morals and Star Wars did I say and this is against the Star Wars morals and values and now you could absolutely have a feminist Star Wars message and do it in a cool way I'm sure you could it kind of depends on what your definition of feminism is I don't think feminism has to be about proving men wrong feminism is just you know women being as competent and his men we saw rogue one we had a female main character she did a great job I mean Princess Leia has kind of been a feminist icon you have the old trope of saving the princess you don't expect the princess to grab a laser gun and start you know firing at the bad guys Star Wars has always kind of been feminist so why on earth would I say that the feminist message in last Jedi is against the core values of Star Wars in general I've never said that I've never even thought that so where the [ __ ] is this [ __ ] getting this [ __ ] what are you talking about you can't just say this [ __ ] I guess this Robbie Colin guy just had to turn in something for the week and he probably sat down and watched my video and went into it like okay I already know what I'm gonna say about this I know that it's an angry woman hating video you know he probably had this all written before even washed my freakin video and they watched it he's like oh it's actually like funny and insightful damn it well I can just lie about it I guess who cares dude notice he linked to the brie Larson video in his article but he didn't link to mine because then people might have watched it and figured out that he's a complete [ __ ] artist then there's the third step which this guy's living at a fantasy at this point third step which will generously describe as direct action protest against the film in question you usually entails review bombing boycotts and social media harassment campaigns waged against the creators and stars [ __ ] you dude [ __ ] you what are you talking about I have never told anyone to review bomb the last Jedi why would I I am 100% against review bombing I think people should be honest with their opinions and you should only review something if you have actually engaged in it watched it seen it read it or whatever and have a valid opinion okay review bombing or you just go in and you haven't seen the movie or you don't really care and you go one star [ __ ] you I'm totally against that too I've never endorsed a boycott I'm gonna see star wars episode 9 of course I'm gonna see star wars episode 9 I want to know where it goes I want to see if they can pick up the pieces from Ryan Johnson's abortion I think Disney's you know [ __ ] themselves I think a lot of people aren't gonna see the movie because they're kind of done with Star Wars but why would I want a boycott of it I don't care I guess it's funny to me when Disney loses money because I like seeing billion-dollar corporations suffer but I'm not gonna waste my time trying to you know get everybody to not see a Star Wars movie could we're gonna see the Star Wars movie there's I don't think there's anything I could do to make Star Wars Episode nine not a success okay and as far as social media harassment campaigns go come on man I'm an [ __ ] on Twitter I'll admit it okay I'm always fighting on there and having arguments and whatever else but never once have I gone after an actor or an actress or a director or a producer or anything because honestly I have no interest in having that fight I see a lot of people they tagged Ryan Johnson with my video they go oh this veto guy really rips you a new one and I want to respond it'd be like hey leave Ryan Johnson alone man he's not gonna watch my video I don't want him to watch my video so I have no interest in review bombing I have no interest in starting a boycott and I definitely am not harassing people on social media because they were in the movie and to insinuate in this article that what that video which just kind of talks about why I didn't like Star Wars and what I thought was bad with it leads to this [ __ ] how am I responsible for what other people do dude there's no part in the video where I tell anyone to do anything like that so why am I in an article being blamed for it I keep going between like oh you know I should laugh at this for how ridiculous it is and I'm mad like I'm starting to get really bummed out reading this now cuz I'm like man can we just like have conversations about movies or is every movie gonna be this [ __ ] culture war fight cuz I enjoy making videos about movies but like if every time I make one some dude working for like a huge British newspaper is gonna say I'm responsible for social media harassment campaigns that like actually bums me out like I'm actually kind of like not feeling that good about this right now how is there anything else here that I need to know about here he's saying it's crazy that the last Jedi broadly delighted its real-world audience one Universal critical acclaim and made a mint got an A on the viewer survey CinemaScore got an 85 on Metacritic and became the 11th highest-grossing film ever made yet a Star Wars fans again I'm not one of them but Star Wars fans are still talking about it more than a year later as a catastrophe for the series yeah I mean what do you want me to say it made me like Star Wars less and force awakens I wasn't a huge fan but I was like I don't know this could be going in an interesting direction maybe last Jedi is gonna really pick it up and do something you know exciting with it and then it came out and I was like this movie is bad all the characters are dumb they killed off Luke Skywalker and the most pathetic and depressing way possible so yeah when I talk about Star Wars I'm not thinking about Oh everyone else liked it oh it made a lot of money oh it got in a cinema score or whatever the hell that is when I talk about Star Wars I'm talking about my personal feelings and my personal feelings are I don't know it sucks and I hate all this other horrible stuff he's trying to connect me to because he mentions my video in like the second paragraph and says it's emblematic of all the other stuff he's talking about where people were mean to the female Ghostbusters or they were mad that there was a black stormtrooper I was never mad that there was a black stormtrooper like none of this other [ __ ] he's talking about applies to me at all this Star Wars video I made is like a blessing and a curse got me a bunch of new followers and has apparently forever doomed me to being lumped in with every horrible thing that ever happened to anyone on the internet and then here at the end I mean he seems to be describing me okay he says you can champion feminism while still finding the latest female superhero as snooze so what the [ __ ] you just said that because I don't like the feminism in the last Jedi I'm an [ __ ] but then you go on to say oh it's okay to dislike a female character I make fun of the purple haired lady in Star Wars and I'm a monster but everybody else gets to be a feminist while also disliking female superhero movies why don't I get the benefit of the doubt [ __ ] you man god damn it so yeah this dude who's telling me I hate female superheroes battle Angelita my favorite comic of all time movie was not exactly what I wanted because I'm that much of a fan of the comic that I wanted a one-to-one representation but I still liked it and I really want there to be a sequel so why are you saying I hate female superheroes you cited my video you could have gone on my channel and seen that I have a review of Aleta which is mostly positive been like oh this guy's probably a bad example to use he clearly likes many female lead movies dude I love the movie the witch I'm not gonna give away the spoilers but that is the ultimate [ __ ] feminist movie I would say as a very feminist message I like bridesmaids that's a that's a fun movie bunch of lady comedians [ __ ] it man why am I the demon why am I the bad man I'm sorry my video was popular ok I'm sorry it's in your suggested videos and you don't know how to click the dots and make it go away but to the guy who wrote this this Robbie Colin or whatever can you just take a moment to consider that maybe I just didn't like a movie that I'm not trying to secretly wage some culture war where I was like well I make a negative review of Star Wars people will turn against feminism and then me and the other misogynist [ __ ] will win so [ __ ] stupid point is this guy's final paragraph is the perfect message you can both be a fan of feminism and feminist values and female characters and that doesn't mean you have to like every one of them I think hold oh and the whole feminist message in the last yet I was really badly written that's it and I think we really need to stop using movies like Star Wars or Captain Marvel or whatever else as stand-ins for this weird culture war their movies just some movies are good some movies are bad I haven't seen Captain Marvel yet I'm gonna go see it maybe it's good I mean going the other way I just got a message from a guy who says he can't support my patreon any more because I said that I'm gonna give the Captain Marvel movie a fair chance meaning I'm in league with the sjw's and dude I'm gonna go to the movies I think I'm gonna watch a Marvel movie we got a stop that's all I'm saying man all of this nonsense we're to be on the right side of history you have to like all the same movies no
