foreign what's going on guys welcome back to Chris Cass recently I was thinking back to my favorite games growing up series that always seem to come to mind for me are Bethesda RPG series more specifically the Elder Scrolls franchise I can't tell you how many hours I spent wandering the land of Skyrim or doing odd jobs in Morrowind it definitely shaped the games I liked today and I really hope there's an Elder Scrolls six but we'll see although the series is quite close to my heart it does lack a certain amount of depth that I look for in games these days Dwarf Fortress has that complexity but I do still love the world and lore of eldest girls lucky for me I found a mod that lets me have both it's called vardenfell from the Creator Putnam on Steam Workshop if you're not familiar with the modding process this one is real easy from your steam Library click Workshop search vardenfell And subscribe to the mod then go into Dwarf Fortress and generate a new world from the world generation screen click mods and insert the mod into your load order I do assume it will conflict with other creature mods so I would look for that if you're using a heavily modded setup after that just generate the world and you're in to show you guys what's possible with this mod I made a settlement using each of the playable races from the Varden film mod starting off we have the Dwemer this is actually the race that I was most excited about playing from this mod as they're the one group that you cannot play in Elder Scrolls games at least without mods essentially they were this powerful race of Highly Advanced people and they went underground and they sort of were never seen again so it's like a mysterious aspect of the lore in Elder Scrolls games so actually being able to play as them is super awesome here we are in their base and I did try to base this on sort of the Dwemer Ruins that you would find in Skyrim and Morrowind and they said sort of had these long winding mazes and that's how they designed their settlements and then they also use a lot of traps so I made sure to have a lot of security as you can see here we have sort of a an arrow slid in the wall that they could shoot at you with upstairs we've got a Ballista aimed right at the door and a catapult um and this is pretty Bare Bones but I wanted to make a settlement with each one and I think it turned out pretty good if we go ahead and zoom in on one of the settlers um we'll look at again here he's a Bard as you can see they're sort of uh very different from your typical Elder scrolled races um they're they have like ashy skin and they live in huge cities underground as like we were talking about um this guy's clumsy for some reason but if you zoom in they just kind of look like aliens to me which I thought was really interesting I didn't really expect them to look like that like as you can see they sort of had these like bug eyes it's really weird not what I expected I kind of sort of them expected them to look like the Falmer in Elder Scrolls games this guy's mining I'm not sure where he's going but let's see guys heading to a meeting how exciting this is definitely a settlement I want to keep working on because it has a lot of potential and uh from what I saw the mod author posting they actually have ways to improve iron materials which with this mod on iron is actually the like the weakest material you can use so let's just make an iron Barrel since we're here but it is the weakest but that's not going to stop us because apparently you can upgrade iron materials with this race which I have not figured out how to do yet but I I think it could be really interesting we're gonna move on to our next race the Orcs here we are my orc settlement they're also known as orsomer and Elder Scrolls lore these guys are basically strong isolationist peoples they they dwell in very uh distant camps and they keep to themselves they don't like talking Outsiders so a lot of the quests with them are like trying to like get to know them and they don't really want to get to know you so you have to prove yourself and that's sort of the quest flow with Orcs in Elder Scrolls games and there I'm a little biased they are my favorite race in Elder Scrolls games um the only one even coming close for me is the argonians which are not playable with this model I was like no I wanted to play a lizard man hopefully in the future they'll add it because that would be like that'd be my favorite playthrough so I tried to kind of design the camp based on the orc camps you see mostly inspired by Skyrim here as you see we have the fence when you sort of come across an orc settlement in Skyrim they always have this like tall fence and they sort of build in the middle so Underground you know I tried to make it sort of a more open settlement but also they have sort of a rigid hierarchy as you can see here they actually have some unique uh roles we have the chieftain and wise woman and we also have a quartermaster which kind of takes the place of the bookkeeper and the broker so it's like they've combined a lot of the roles into like a few different roles apparently we can unlock more later I have not seen that happen the the mod author or I believe commented that when you hit 50 you start unlocking some new roles but I am at 65. and we have five so um hopefully that's that's not just a glitch or something like that but they're doing just fine without that and of course because they have specific roles they have their own demands so the wise woman and the chieftain have their own bedrooms and dining halls and offices so they need a whole bunch of stuff and uh it could be a little tough at first because they demand it right away and you don't uh select them they vote themselves in right so that was a little tricky at first that was like a learning curve um trying to build a complex bedrooms right off the bat with very little materials we've started building down below but uh we started running into some crazy monsters down here that we were not ready for so I just blocked it off and I made this unpassable so once we have like a good enough fighting force I'm not really happy with these guys yet you see a lot of them don't even have weapons yet so we want to make sure they are tricked out ready to go before they start heading down into the depths of Dwarf Fortress another thing that happened to me I had a I sort of had an immigration crisis on my hands as everyone who was coming to my community uh we're children so I have about like 30 kids that uh cannot do most roles they can haul stuff and they just kind of run around the camp playing and uh they just eat food and drain the resources without helping I know kids are not able to do jobs it's okay but um I didn't want 30 kids at once come to my settlement so I basically have like an orphanage over here as you can see I just have all these kids set up in all these bedrooms and uh you know I'm hoping they all grow up around the same time and then they'll all like contribute to society and of course you gotta have the dance floor so I got the Orcs dancing I put the art in the center so this is where they'll want to hang out right I think it looks pretty cool let's say goodbye to the Orcs and go check out our last race of the video the Nords here we are at our Nord settlement Nords are the primary race in the Elder Scrolls Skyrim what's definitely the most popular Elder Scrolls game there are cold dwelling people that live in the far north they have sort of a Viking style I usually don't play as them personally but um I do think their culture and history is very interesting and I tried to base this settlement on that culture I sort of did a hybrid of a bunch of different places in Skyrim so I tried to have mountainous architecture that you'd see in Markarth and the 7000 steps where they sort of build like into the mountain so as you can see there's stairs you can get all the way down to the bottom of the mountain with these stairs right I also sort of tried to replicate sort of how they design throne rooms and the Elder Scrolls so they sort of had a long hallway and then they have meeting rooms they like like kind of large open rooms so I tried to replicate that here they also love statues I thought it was going to be of something interesting but it's they just sort of made cubes another thing that Nords do is they keep most of their stuff outside so I kept a lot of their workshops outside as you can see it's sort of like a Market Square that you'd see in Skyrim and a half above ground Farms that are they're they're looking interesting they're getting a little overgrown and another thing that I try to replicate was how they did mining in this they always seem to have a mind far away from everybody else and they got it blocked off with doors right I tried to replicate that style there so we've got the the sort of Forge outside we've got the Jeweler and then inside is where you get the smelter right and then you can go down below and you can start just mining away getting getting your uh ore and stuff like that and overall the Nords are pretty straightforward they kind of play like the dwarves if you look here they sort of got the the carefully braided beard and they've got uh then the Nords definitely have nice beards and Skyrim so they made sure to include that but overall it's pretty standard race it's kind of like if you played as the humans indoor Fortress nothing too crazy here I do have a rooster missing very concerning but yeah if you guys enjoyed this mod showcase let me know in the comments below what mod should I do next
