The Ultimate Sacrifice: A Dwarf Fortress Story

a group of seven Dwarven explorers were sent by the king to stake a claim in the vast Frozen wastelands on the northmost point of the Known World they brought what few supplies they could manage to carry a few picks some animals seeds and a few other Basics the Dwarven picks struck the ice and made quick work as the dwarves dug deeper and deeper Under The Frozen Ground eventually reaching Stone beneath the ice the stone was rich in resources and the dwarfs were happy to escape from the cold on the surface it wasn't long before the dwarves had their first experience dealing with the wildlife here a Yeti appeared and rushed the Caravan only to be scared off by dogs it was apparent that this Yeti was hungry there were no resources on the surface and a necromancer's tower close by meant that there was constant danger the yeti was annoyed while caught in a snowstorm apparently and subsequently right off leaving behind vomit and blood-stained ice on the surface the dwarves locked themselves in and continued expanding downwards as news of the successful establishment of the Dwarven Outpost reached the king he began sending waves of immigrants to help them get established because of the lack of grass or plants on the surface the animals brought by the dwarves quickly began starving they were promptly slaughtered and their bones used to make fancy crowns and that would later be traded for much needed resources like booze maybe food too but mainly just booze dwarfs just cannot live without alcohol as they expanded downwards they discovered a cavern this was a turning point for the group as they knew that their best chance for survival meant venturing into this Cavern to collect wood and plants to brew into booze they also understood that if they could claim part of the cavern and fortify it they would be able to plant seeds and become self-sustainable by growing their own food and drink the caverns are a dangerous place so they built a defensive wall in a doorway to keep any threats from the caverns at Bay the immigrants came and more picks were crafted they were promptly put to work in the mines chipping away at Stone and stockpiling logs they used all of the resources at their disposal to build a Tavern they carved all kinds of furniture out of stone and wood word of the outposts had spread elves humans and goblins came from all over the land to visit the Fortress had a mystical appeal to these other races so they often asked for permanent residency they were warriors entertainers and Scholars so the dwarves happily accepted a decision they would Gravely regret later on the wet walls of the cavern were used to create a pit which would later fill with water and become a base for a well a source of water used for cleaning drinking and washing wounds it wasn't long before the first Beast emerged from the caverns luckily the door to the Fort was well crafted and barred shut so the Beast was unable to enter this was a big problem as the dwarves knew that soon they would run out of booze and they were unsure how they would survive without it they desperately needed to wall off a section of the cavern to use for farming it became apparent that there were issues with the other races living in the fort many of them would get overly drunk start fights and wander naked aimlessly through the snow this was greatly affecting the morale of the dwarves in the fort but for the moment they had much bigger fish to fry horrifying sounds echoed through the Fortress from deep in the caverns everyone was aware that there was a massive 300 year old fire-breathing Beast separated from the Fortress by just a six inch thick stone door meanwhile on the surface an army of the Dead sent by The Necromancer laid Siege to The Fortress the dwarves had no choice but to drive them off using nothing but their picks As Weapons this was a wake-up call and it was decided that a hospital and a Barracks would be built immediately they proceeded to build the hospital just above the cavern using the pit of water as a source for their well they also built temporary barracks and formed a militia the militia began training immediately the dwarves realized very quickly that their best hope for survival would require a strong military willing to fight and die for the residents of the Fortress unfortunately this made many of the Dwarven Warriors incredibly unhappy they found themselves in a situation where they were forced to defend their home but their home was being disrespected by stinking greedy disgusting ugly pink mouth-breathing shit-eating humans and elves on a regular basis they just could not hold their booze for even the average Dwarven child in the Fortress could easily drink even the strongest largest human Warrior under the table no problem this created serious tension in the Fortress the Dwarven Warriors trained tirelessly aware that they would soon need to face the Beast deep in the caverns if they had any chance for survival the stockpile of drinks dwindled as the population skyrocketed the militia was constantly busy they fought off waves of Elvin and Goblin attackers while the humans and elves in the Fortress drank sang puked and themselves silly throughout the grand Hall's taverns and temples the military was quickly becoming skilled in the Arts of combat they had plenty of opportunity to practice hacking away at flesh as countless attacks and skirmishes unfolded on the surface the goal was always to go deeper though every door forth their silver knows the deeper is better in the caverns something was stirring another Beast emerged and was quickly cut down but it took a particularly observant dwarf to realize what the had actually happened after peering through the cracks in the stones he spotted strange creatures climbing on the trees and the walls in the Fortress they were ant people ant people and it seemed that they would be just another obstacle in the fight to claim the cavern everything began to make more sense as the dwarves realized that the horrible sounds they had been hearing in the caverns were the sounds of a battle raging between the first Beast that they had encountered and an army of ant people armed with blowguns and other crazy ant stuff it was decided that the dwarves would use this as an opportunity the military assembled in the hospital just above the cavern entrance and they prepared for a fight they knew that the Beast was hurt and tired and the ant people had already suffered massive casualties due to the beast's never-ending stream of hot fire spewed from deep in its guts the Warriors prepared themselves as the door was unlocked and they knew that there was no turning back whatever came through that door would either die by their hands or they would perish to its fire and the fort would burn with everyone in it these are the moments that make dwarves feel the most alive the Beast entered the stair chamber and was immediately hit by a hail of arrows Spears swords and other stuff it was over before it had even begun the dwarves had never felt so alive euphoric from inebriation and drunk with bloodlust the dwarves charged into the cavern slaying every last Paul Rudd I mean Ant-Man alive after the Beast fell and the Ants had been dispatched it was time for the civilians to pick up some slack the soldiers rested as Farm plots were built and the cavern was sealed by stone walls ah victory almost completely out of booze hungry tired and Afraid the population of the Fortress quickly established themselves in the caverns in a last-ditch attempt to grow enough mushrooms to brew into booze to keep them alive at least until another Caravan arrived with Goods to trade this is when really hit the fan depression anxiety and Madness sweeped through the fort the constant awareness of the dangers above and below them caused many to become thoroughly addicted to booze for the dwarves this was only natural but the humans the humans made everyone embarrassed by the stupid that they did while under the influence of alcohol soon The Fortress fell into darkness dead bodies discarded clothing and human excrement littered the tavern floor elves and humans stumbled drunkenly through the Fortress they were consuming far too much and their contributions were non-existent this is when a very difficult and dark decision was made the leaders of the militia met in secret with the Nobles and it was decided the plan was drawn out and swiftly executed the militia slowly made their way down the Frozen Temple steps towards the tavern before anyone had time to think the elves and humans were rounded up forced into the cavern and the door was locked behind them Dwarven archers hid behind fortified walls ready for anything a lever was pulled and the doors separating the Farmland from the cavern became unlocked the dwarves waited patiently until suddenly another forgotten Beast came rushing in it sprayed fire and used its massive claws to tear through limbs the smell of burnt flesh filled the air as the dwarves prepared for whatever was next in the chaos somehow the door was unlocked and again there was a massive beast in the stairwell underneath the hospital and again there it was slain perished a dark and Powerful silence fell over the fort a holy sacrifice had been made dwarfs poured into the caverns to salvage a little bit of food that was left in the burning Fields many dwarves spent the foreseeable future in temples praying to the gods for forgiveness and thanks the last few humans were rounded up horrified at the atrocities they had just witnessed the dwarves in the fort seemed to be joyous and gleeful about the genocide that they had just committed and the remaining humans and elves were sure they would be next the dwarves had other plans for them though the last few of them were rounded up and brought to the deepest layers of the Fortress they were forced out over the drawbridge and exiled to the darkness forever what's up guys Scott bunk here I just wanted to thank you for watching the video all the way through um this project was a labor of love and this video is My Love Letter to Dwarf Fortress um I don't remember the last time I felt this immersed and addicted to a game I really don't and I know for many of you this game doesn't look like much and to me it didn't at first either but looks are deceiving door Fortress is deep and has seemingly unlimited potential for producing procedurally generated characters and stories so
