[Music] all right good day to you god bless you welcome to the shepherds chapel welcome to this family bible study our praise god we're ready to get back into our father's word good old second samuel chapter 17 what a mess israel is in at this time you know david though i think everyone admires david and respects him but he really didn't have all that happy a life when you come right down to it seemed like after he was pulled from the sheep pole and began to do battle for israel that it wasn't long after he was recognized that he began to his flight from saul and now we find him in flight again from his own son his own son so there was a great deal in his life that was disappointment you know when one of your own turn on you especially one of your own children such as absalom has here is firstborn that hurts and it hurts real bad therefore we see in as much as absalom is in power that he's ready now to kill his father his father is the only one he wants killed when quite the contrary on david's part you'll find he instructs his army kill anybody you want to but don't kill absalom it was david's firstborn that love for your own children came through but excellent as the way he reacted he certainly wasn't worth it however well that is to say under these circumstances now absalom has just been given some very screwed advice uh by a hit the bell which was david's counselor in the past a very wise man and he had given absalom some very good advice as far as conquering israel but david had his own spy uh hush shy sent into absalom's camp pretending to be a traitor to david but absalom also respected the advice of um hisha so a very covert operation here it amazes me at how people in this age and time when i don't know if it's that they are not that near the leadership of a country or if they're just a little stupid or what all of a sudden a cold war a covert operation is something new under the sun this never happened before it's been since the beginning of time that's the only way that in many cases that you can operate when you're dealing with non-christian nations non-christian nations at this moment are causing america more trouble than any of the other nations put together one non-christian nation brings great hatred against america a christian nation i guess people are just a little slow to pick up on things but there's a payday coming and praise god for it so we see this covert operation about to take place chapter 17 verse 1 a word of wisdom from our father let's go with it moreover a hitherfell said unto absalom let me now choose out twelve thousand men and i will i will arise and pursue after david this night and i will come upon him while he is weary and weak handed and will not and will make him afraid and all the people that are with him shall flee and i will smite the king only i won't kill anyone but david just let me choose out twelve thousand and go now a hit the fell knows that david must be conquered or he's a dead man anyway so and his advice would have been the correct advice as far as good strategy but observe when god's in control verse three and um uh a hitherfell continues verse three and i will bring back all the people unto thee great ruler all right uh absalom always on an ego trip i'll bring all the people back and what a king you'll be the man whom thou seekest is as if all return so all the people shall be in peace what what this really would better translate is the only man who needs to die to bring peace is david verse 4. and the same pleased absolutely well and all the elders of israel it pleased him very well for what reason it pre-pleased absalom well because you know when you got an ego you're pretty easy to reckon with verse five then said absalom call now you shy the archite also and let us hear likewise what he saith let's hear what he has to say so you see here dave this is david's own man right here hand-picked he wanted to go do with david but david said no you return and plead traitor to me and then everything you learn or find out so be it and told him which spies to contact and so forth so the covert action takes place because because he sha shy must do one thing he knows that if if uh absalom's man um a hitherfell were to take twelve thousand chosen men that they could probably trap david in this weak state they were in and they would probably kill him so he must do something to abide for time observe the workings of a very wise man biting time what does he do he uses the ego of absalom to defeat him verse six and when he chai was come to absalom absalom spake unto him saying a hit the fell has spoken after this manner shall we do after his saying if not speak thou if you don't think this is a good plan for a hitherfell to take 12 000 men go down and trap david where he sleeps and slaying and bring all the people back if you don't think that's a good plan speak up verse 7. and he said into absalom the council that hit the fell hath given is not good at this time now he was being very cautious he didn't say it's bad counsel he just said it's not good at this time now he proceeds to give the reason verse 8 four said you sha thou knowest thy father and his men that they are mighty men and they are capped in their minds they're bitter in their mind in other words as we might say here in this part of the country that chaffs my hide all right well they were chapped they were mad they were bitter as a bear robbed of her reps in the field and thy father is a man of war and will not lodge with the people you're not going to find him there with the people nine behold he is hid now in some pit or in some other place and it will come to pass when some of them be overthrown at the first when you first surprise them and attack some will be overthrown at that yes that whosoever heareth it will say there is a slaughter among the people that follow absalom the whole people are going to turn on you well now if you're a man that's on an ego trip you want all the people to love you it doesn't matter whether they really love you or not they just want to say they just want you to say praise caesar to them all right praise absalom you've got to be popular if you're on an ego trip with the people verse 10 and he also that is valiant whose heart is as the heart of a lion shall utterly melt for all israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man and they which which be with him are valued men they're gonna they're gonna come out of there fighting like a swarm of bees verse 11. here comes his counsel therefore i counsel that all israel be generally gathered unto thee from dan even to beersheba i make a motion that you bring from the north to the south bring them all in as the sand that is by the sea for multitude and that thou go to battle in thine own person now they hit the fell this is where this is where uh yusha is working a hit to have foul to say i am the one that conquered david he wanted that feather in his own bonnet and um you shine knowing this draws it to to absalom's attention that it is absalon that needs the feather he needs to be the leader of the people when david falls whereby he gets the credit as the mightiest king of all times now i want you to remember of something i reminded you of a lecture or so back we had first saul who was appointed by almighty god then we had david who was appointed by almighty god but absalom has appointed himself he's he's on on a ego gig and god did not appoint him a man such as this is very predictable his ego is will will give him away in other words you can feed that ego just a little bit and he'll fall right into your hands he's no problem at all god knows that and so did this wise person verse 12 by absalom leading himself he continues so shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground and of him and of all the men that are with him there shall not be left so much as one that is to say david's own personal guards will destroy that whole crew now uh you shi is playing a pretty safe thing here he knows that his advice is not going to bring death to too many of the people in david's camp because absalom wants them to worship him as savior you're also picking up a type here if you would of a in as much as david is the type of christ that you have the type of antichrist self-appointed here the same as salvation satan self-appointed himself so as absalom verse 13 moreover if he begotten into a city then shall all israel bring ropes to that city and we will draw it into the river we'll have so many people there that we don't have a chance of losing there won't be any possibility until there be not one small stone found there will destroy that city he's making this sound very great to absalom like he is the great ruler the great planner the great victor verse 14. and absalom and all the men of israel said the council of hussite the architect erkheit is better than the council of ahithethel for the lord had appointed to defeat the good counsel of a hippie fell to the intent that the lord might bring evil upon ableism absalom rather in other words god's in control god could bring disaster upon this one you don't have to worry when someone self appoints themself god will see to it they're destroyed it's like someone that touches one of god's elect you don't have to worry the council and everything else will be controlled by almighty god the same is the counsel of god's elect when they're delivered up in these end times it is god himself that will speak through them they are not to premeditate but what they are given at that hour will be the very holy spirit almighty god speaking through them at that moment bringing about the defeat of satan and all his henchmen and you have people that think they know what speaking in that tongue that was spoken on pentecost day means when they see the graciousness and the greatness of almighty god speaking to bring about the defeat of the true antichrist just the same as we have absolutely just only a type being brought to his end here 15. then said you say unto doc and to avatar the priest these are the spies that david through in his covert operation has planted in ableton's absalom's camp thus and thus did a hypoth counsel absalom and the elders of israel and thus and thus have i counseled in other words feeding him in on all these events that have transpired verse 16 now therefore sin quickly and tell david saying lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness but speedily pass over lest the king be swallowed up and all the people that are with him you get across that jordan don't that would be in case there was a double cross now the priests as you know we're supposed to pass it on to their sons and they do verse 17. now jonathan and ahimes stayed by in roguel for they might not be seen to come into the city and a winch this is to say a maidservant better translated went and told them and they went and told king david she guided them in it was a made servant to david and delivered them 18. nevertheless a lad saw them and told absalom but they went both of them away quickly and came to a man's house in beihuram which had a well in his court whether they went down now wells were usually i want you to know usually dry this time of the year and and they simply call crawl down into that well you might call it a pit i think that god says to us a great deal in these actions of preventing the enemy to take you into captivity what what it's saying in a sense we don't like to think of the pit or the abyss as any place other than where satan would dwell but sometime for camouflage you may have to go to a place that might not be your own choosing think about it and i speak in a spiritual sense 19 and the woman took and spread a covering over the well's mouth and spread ground corn their own and the thing was not known she hid i mean it was hidden in the seed and it let the seed show um covert yes very deceptive twenty and when absolute servants came to the woman or came to the woman to the house they said where is aha miaz and jonathan the lad had reported it they were on the trail and the woman said unto them they be gone over the brook of water i saw them pass that way just a little bit ago and when they had thought and could not find them they returned to jerusalem i understand this is all in the proximity there 21 and it came to pass after they were departed that they came up out of the well out of that pit and went and told king david and said unto david arise and let us pass quickly over the water for thus hatha hit the fill counseled against you don't take any chances 22 then david arose and all the people that were with him and they passed over jordan by the morning light there lack not one of them that was not gone over jordan they disappeared you see a little good covert information intelligence that is gathered back can save many lives and put the enemy at a great great disadvantage you understand verse 23 and when a hypothetical saw that his counsel was not followed in other words he was a very prideful fellow he saddled his ass and arose and got him home to his house to his city and put his household in order and hanged himself and died and was buried in the sepulcher of his father now why would he do this because he was an exceedingly wise person he was wise enough to know that his counsel had not been regarded therefore he his pride was terribly wounded but that's not the real reason he knew that with absalom following the orders or the council of heushan that david would have the victory and that when david returned from across the jordan that he would have a hippophil killed and have no mercy on him so with his pride smashed in a state of depression he ended his life and it's probably just as well because david certainly would have killed him david could not stand a traitor verse 24 and then david came to me hey nan and absalom passed over jordan he and all the men of israel with him you have two hosts you have two camps the same in near area where jacob and esau had the two oaths and the two camps 25 and and i might say again in the very near future where there will be another two hosts you see everything that goes around comes around and we're very near this valley of jehoshaphat which means the valley of judgment verse 25 and absalom made a mesa that means a burden captain over the host instead of joab joab had been the general over israel but when they come to the people uh absalom takes over and appoints a new ruler a military commander that is which a mesa was a man's son this gets a little tricky hang on to it whose name was isra and israelite i think this is a mistranslation i think it should be he was a jezra light and israelite means that you are born of the tribe one of the 12 tribes or 13 of his royal jezreel is a land and in chronicles what is that first chronicles 2 16 17 it even says he was an ishmaelite well i think you'd better go by chronicles and realize the scribes era causes the jezreel ally to be an israelite very the hebrew it only takes one letter basically to make jezreelite it's it's it's a play on the word israelite quite frankly in the hebrew language alphabet and an israelite that went in to abigail the daughter of nehash sister to zur uriah joab's mother in other words uh this would be uh zeru i am was a half sister you might say to david so a relative so to speak 26. so israel and absalom pitched in the land of gilad 27 and it came to pass when david was come to me hanan the son of nehesh of rabbah of the children of m of amnon and ammon that is and make her the son of amniel of lodibar and barrazilla the giddy gilead giladite of rogin that is to say uh nice interesting places what 28 brought beds and basins and earthen vessels and wheat and barley and flour parts corn and beans lentils and parched pulse that simply means food a grain of one sort of the other and honey and butter and sheep and cheese of kind for david and for the people that were with him to eat for they said the people is hungry and weary and thirsty in the wilderness now here david has been on the march there were no provisions taken that at least that would be adequate to feed the army that is with david i want you to see how god stays in control how that god supplied these things for those people all right let's get right on i want to get into the downfall here of absalom in this lecture if we may verse 18 chapter 18 in verse 1. my point is this god if you use the very best of your intelligence in conquering or accomplishing the duties and our assignments that almighty god gives you he will always see that you carry them out chapter 18 verse 1 and david numbered he mustered the people that were with him and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them i want you to know what he's doing he's mustering his troops and you there will never there will probably never again in history be a man that was as successful as david was in dealing uh with an enemy as for his military strategy is concerned he was the best but why would he not be with almighty god leading him verse 2 and david sent forth the third part of the people under the hand of joab and a third part of the hand of abhishei the son of zeriah that would have been his nephew joab's brother and a third pardon of the hand of ithaca itiya the gettite and the king said unto the people i will surely go forth with you myself also i will lead the charge anything that david liked to split his forces up keep one in reserve and yet hit from hit from um uh two separate angles and then let the reserves fall in wherever they were most needed that is beside keeping reserves in a holding camp for restoring or replenishing weak spots in the line he was very screwed again very screwed in managing his forces verse 3 but the people answered thou shall not go forth now that's a pretty strong thing to say to a king like david thou shall not go forth for if we flee away they will not care for us matter if half of us die will they care for us but now thou art worth ten thousand of us therefore now it is better that thou secour us out of the city a word which means to pray for or to replenish if and to and to send replacements to instruct to use his mind in bringing all these things to pass support them in that sense in prayer he was too valuable a man at this time to go to the front you see a wise person giving that counsel anytime two of royalty are about to be killed people can be very difficult to manage it is no different in this day and time in the middle east when rulers fall and need be replaced it is done so quickly because people that are used to that type of rule cannot stand the thought of not having that king be in place all right you understand verse 4 and the king said unto them what seemeth you best i will do what seems to you to be the best thing i'm not going to argue with it i'll do it and the king stood by the gate side and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands he's got a pretty good army right with him verse five and the king commanded joab and abbas shai and itae it's hey i saying deal gently for my sake with the young man even with absalom it's my firstborn see and all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning absalom poor old david his compassion remember the uh not an analogy but the explanation i gave concerning the fact that god would cause one man to be evil saul when the demons hit him and david's compassion would be his downfall he could not help himself verse nine six so the people went out into the field against israel that's to say with absalom leading them and the battle was in the wood of ephraim wood is too light a translationist jungle was a jungle seven and when the people of israel were slain before the servants of david and there was there a great slaughter that day of 20 000 men kind fighting kind verse eight but do you know what happened you know what killed more of them than the sword listen to it eight for the battle was there scattered over the face of all the country all that jungle and the wood or the jungle devoured more people that day than the sword devoured the pits and the swamps and so forth swallowed them up god has a way all right and there's one reason he wanted them in this swamp it won't be man that brings absalom down absalom appointed himself and god himself shall take him out listen and absalom met the servants of david and absalom rode upon a mule and the mule went under the thick boughs of the of a great oak and his head caught hold of the oak remember his heavy hair his bushy hair and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth that means his heavy hair his long hair swung him like a rope had been placed upon his neck and hung and the mule that was under him went away hanging that's why men never go into combat if they expect to win with all that fuzz and the little curls on their head they don't make very good soldiers they don't wow they're always getting caught up in something especially dirty food and stuff like that you know the gets caught in the mats and stuff whenever you have to live out in a bib whack that long hair gets you in trouble well are you against long hair no i'm just telling you the truth here's a prime example it hung this poor guy now what's god's lesson in it and i'll get off of that way back in the beginning i had mentioned i mentioned earlier that we have two types here david being the type that would be christ from who as a matter of fact from who the true christ would come absolutely self-appointed as satan and we see him against david therefore anti-david or anti-christ and is it not written as i started to say in the beginning that the curse would come at the conception that was the conception of cain of course and i refer to genesis 3 16 but from that conception that satan seed would bruise the heel of the woman's seed which is christ and that christ would bruise the head of the serpent so the serpent's long hair this type of antichrist strings him like a yo-yo on a string in this great oak tree real bushy headed character god makes a great illustration from it i know i may offend some but be that as it may that's the way the cookie crumbles and that's where the rubber meets the road friend see that you understand your father's word and all these little lessons that are and make up the key to david are very important you can sniff at them if you like and turn your nose up adam that's fine but you'll be taught them in the millennium whether you want to hear them or not they are for your edification they are to bring you to maturity so if we recap real quickly what can we say on these things a man who self-appoints himself into the service of god saying i shall lead god's people is headed for the snare and a quick fall that goes for ministers deacons sunday school teachers the whole hit and caboodle that is self-appointed and on an ego trip rather than serving the living god be humble before our father the creator of all things and serve diligently and search diligently his word to find your duties all right bless your hearts listen a moment please
