usually on saturdays we have a couple more classes except for this week no classes i'm away on a trip so no classes then okay cool let's get into this so let's get into this writing um this was uh sent to me by a student it was back john just the other week and so i thought it was a good kind of writing task to work on it is a line graph and the first step is always just to read the question really carefully when you get to your writing section this is for the academic ielts students so for general adult students it's still good english practice but your task one is quite different you have to do a narrative essay which is in the form of a letter for general writing usually an email something of the sort and for academic it's different it's an expository essay and the expository essay is to explain expose a graph a chart a diagram so that's your goal this is a little bit different um let's work on this together so let's read this ielts task one writing you should spend about 20 minutes on this task students always start with task 1 in your writing section and always spend 20 minutes maximum okay no more than 20 minutes so the following graph shows the change in wheat exports for three different countries in a given time period report the main features and make comparisons were relevant wheat of course is that plant that we use to make flour and from that comes bread of course so everybody knows what we're talking about here i'll draw a little picture so that you're familiar it looks kind of like that this plant okay it's the wheat plant and of course there are some countries that export large amounts of wheat pechen says vodka is made from wheat as well yeah vodka is made from a lot of different kinds of plants it's also made from potatoes oftentimes spec john so wheat exports okay so here we go let's take a look at this graph so it says wheat exports from 1985 to 1990 in million tons of course massive amounts right daniel says i think india exports wheat as well to make bread and so on and then here we have our countries australia canada and the european community in fact hungary where i'm at right now is also a major exporter of wheat and then here we have our lines okay good so let's get a little bit into this first steps first i actually i've seen a few nice essays now where the overview has the introduction uh together with the um main feature the paraphrase and it was nice to see that so let's get into this essay let's write the let's write the overview okay and the overview has two parts often times just two sentences maybe three okay it's a detailed paraphrase of the question plus the most observable feature and in some case plural features okay so again here we have the question the following graph so what kind of graph is it it's a line graph okay so we want to say this line graph instead of shows there are a million different words for show depicts illustrates represents okay lots of different ways to do that so do your best students i'll give you a little bit of a head start and i see some coming up already which is nice okay yeah audi nice i like how you're following along you got the right idea okay monica says the picture depicts the export and tons of food grain namely wheat in half a decade that is 1985 to 1990 in three nations canada us and the european or sorry three regions yeah monica you're right because of the european communities right and be um incorrect to say countries yeah and in fact i'll correct that here in different countries yeah there that was tricky yeah good good eye monica uh sunny says the given graph compares the wheat exports for australia canada and the european countries from 1985 to 1990 sunny keeping it clean keeping it clear and simple it's nice writing okay good lydia says the line chart depicts the change in the weight of wheat exports measured in millions of tons per year in australia canada and european countries between 1985 and 1990 in chronological order lydia that's good it's maybe a little overkill you don't need to say in chronological order 99.9 percent of the time a line graph will be in chronological order okay so and i see that you're including the main feature uh let's not uh get in there yet um beck john says the given line graph illustrates the amount of wheat exported from three regions australia canada and european communities between 1985 and 1990 that is a band 9 paraphrase with details back john let's take that so very well done yeah so the given line graph depicts the wheat exports from three regions australia canada and the european communities between 1985 and 1990 measured in millions of tons yeah so that's our details right so what do we have we have millions of tons these are our years and the three regions that we have are australia canada and european community so might as well give that with as much detail as possible fantastic good job students so different ways to skin the cat means that there are definitely a several different ways to write these overviews you just have to make sure that you're using good grammar it's clear it's very important that you don't make mistakes in the overview of task one because it's the start to your whole writing section looks really bad if you begin with spelling mistakes and grammar mistakes at the very start of the writing section so be really careful with these first couple sentences okay um what do we notice what's the main feature okay what do we notice about these lines about this line graph i think there's a very clear main feature main features of for me anyway there's something that really kind of jumps out at me when i'm looking at this let's see if anybody else picks up on that so what do we notice what's the most observable without looking into uh details and numbers what's the most observable so david valencia says well canada is fluctuating it goes down it goes up goes down goes up so canada is really fluctuating there abhishek says hey all three lines are different from each other yeah can you describe how abhishek romaine says it's relevant to mention that these are yearly measures in the first sentence you could romaine we could get to that a little bit later saying that it's a line graph between 85 and 90. it's fairly clear that it's going to be a yearly uh measure uh the game on says it's clear that the wheat exports vary yeah okay good yeah beck chun says the three regions show different trends from each other that's a really nice way to put it so different trends yeah the word trend here is very well used back john because one kind of trend is fluctuating right so this is a trend or a type of trend okay here we can kind of see that although not significantly but which country is that i think that's uh that's australia the blue so australia more or less is a kind of a slight decrease okay it's a gentle decrease throughout these years so let's say australia here just for fun uh it's a decrease okay so it's another kind of trend right um maybe i should have started with european communities as this is uh the second highest one here but anyway and european communities it's there's a little bit of wiggle here but it's more or less an upward uh trend so it's an increase right so um what's really interesting about this is that you do have three different trends or three different patterns that's another way that you could say it is pattern so the word trend or the word pattern they work well here you have a fluctuating pattern you have a downward trend and then you have an upward trend as well so noticing that is really important okay don't get lost in details like a small one-year difference you're looking at the overall it's the main feature okay so sunny rajput says overall it's clear that european communities exported the most wheat than other countries while canada exports fluctuate over the period i would say that's incorrect i would say canada if we took an average imported the most wheat if we took the average of the canadian wheat exports in the five year period i bet you it would be higher than the european uh union so you want to be really careful with that okay hi catherine hopefully you got my emails i got both of your edits now it's good all right everyone so um here we go let's uh write this main feature i'm going to take a look i think some of you already did it and then we'll keep going so i would say that immediately it is evident that these three regions wheat exports had varying trends over the half decade period okay so that would be your band 9. that's where i'm taking that main feature where it's different trends fluctuating versus decrease versus increase and i'm using some nice vocabulary to clearly put that together immediately it is evident that these three regions wheat exports had varying trends over the half uh decade period let's show some plural possessive here three regions with the apostrophe wheat exports because it shows that these wheat exports belong to these three regions that's why you need that little apostrophe it's such a small little tick of a pen or stroke of the key but it's such an important apostrophe for correct grammar so pay attention to that also leading expressions like immediately rule of thumb follow it with a comma okay it is evident not its evidence don't use contractions again rule of thumb academic essays spell it out okay it is all right um i'm using present tense um here beck john because i'm referring to the graph so it's evident in the graph that these three regions okay it's because of this um verb evident back john that i'm using present tense because i can only be referring to the graph here okay that's why all right janil says at first i shot it is obvious that three countries wheat exports show different trends in the given period careful it's not countries janil as uh monica i believe clearly pointed out that it's the european communities it's made up of multiple countries so it's better to say regions here okay boter says overall the three regions show different amounts of wheat exports among the world in the 10 years but here be really careful we don't have 10 years and different amounts clearly you have to be a little bit more specific than that okay all right good so let's uh do this in a little bit uh more detail now so let's get into the analysis and um for that we want to identify our points of comparison or define our points of analysis so here always take a minute for your analyses plural and make sure that you have some clear ideas before you start writing so what would you start writing about here first okay what makes sense what would you what would you state first okay od says let's talk about the red line first so yeah i would actually uh talk about the starting position and this red line first so that would be my number one okay and um then this would be my 1b here okay yeah absolutely that makes sense um this would be my one c mentioning this cross right here now when you have this kind of crossing where you see in 1989 the european communities surpass canada you can either mention this when you're describing the change of wheat exports in canada or you could choose to mention it when you're describing the pattern or the change in wheat exports in the european communities right so sorry i'll move these lines a little bit so you can see the countries there so this uh this kind of exchange here okay and quantities all right you can either mention it as fell below or dropped under when describing canada's exports or you could describe it for um the european communities and you could save it for a little bit later and say superseded uh which one do you think is easier do you think it's easier to discuss this uh this situation when discussing canada or when discussing the european communities i know it seems like a little detail but i'm curious what you think so is it easier to say canadian wheat exports fell below that of the european communities in 1989 or do you think it's easier to say in 1989 european communities surpassed canadian wheat exports a or b i would actually say that saying that it's surpassed um is uh prudhvi is correct yeah so this this description here is a little bit easier than this because we still have this left to go so i would probably just mention this as 1c this low point okay and i would mention this as 1d the reason why i'm writing 1c and 1db is because these aren't necessarily separate sentences you can combine depending on your vocabulary these patterns into one sentence and then 2 definitely should be um the eu so european communities okay so that would be two and then here i would probably go all the way here until 2b and then here 2c and 2d okay this will make a lot more sense when we're writing it but that's the way i would choose to do it to stay on the easy side while still keeping a band 9 and then for australia of course at the start point with line graphs it always makes sense to be chronological means to be in the order of time and then here we have well you could it depends how fast of a writer you are you might do a 3b here at this point and then this would be your 3c okay but uh if you're running out of time then three uh b might not even be necessary because it's just such a slight change uh in the pattern there so again it depends on your speed 150 words minimum you're looking for closer to 200 for those band nines okay all right okay so let's do this so let's start with number one okay let's start with the red line and kind of with this whole region here so because these three are close together and we can see that they're really between 15 to 20 million tons okay i think there's an interesting sentence that we can kind of start with there before we break out into canada so let's do that now you got a little bit of a head start so mention this kind of one a point and then we'll move uh towards describing the red line which is describing canada now try not to focus too much on numbers but focus more on interpretation okay that's the points of analysis and that will make sense so you'll see what i mean here in a second okay all right so amanjat says looking at each of these regions exports in more detail there was an upward trend in the export wheat in the region of canada from 1985 to 88 okay monica says the three regions began with a similar amount of exports in 1985 somewhere between 15 to 20 million tons yeah in the game in the beginning of this time period okay obviously these countries were exporting wheat even before then lucas says looking into more detail looking into more detail okay it can be noted that after uh deceasing slightly in the amount of exports it's a little bit off darcy says canada was leading among the three given communities in exporting wheat until 1989 european communities exported the highest amount of wheat after 1989. yeah darshil you can start with that i would probably start with this beginning point here a little bit so i would write something like at the start of this time period in 1985 all three regions were in a similar range of wheat exports between 15 and 20 million tons okay so this would be my first sentence and this would be considered a band nine sentence um take a look at this so um in the graph it's interesting to see that we have the most similarity in this region here okay so sorry in this time frame here okay so the three countries kind of start similarly between 15 and 20 million tons okay regardless of the region and then they start to move apart right um some get closer some get further apart and then again we have more variance in the end but here we have quite a good grouping of data points here we have quite a good grouping of data points and of course 1985 is the start of this time period so i want to describe that clearly take a look at the way that i do that so here i use the subjective okay at the start of this time period comma in 1985 comma and the reason why is because 1985 or in 1985 describes this phrase here okay and then i continue all three regions were in a similar range of wheat exports so between 15 and 20 million tons so this between 15 and 20 million tons describes this subjective statement here so this is quantitative this is qualitative this is quantitative this is qualitative or put another way it's qualitative quantitative qualitative quantitative and i'm using commas to show those descriptions and those separations is that clear is everybody clear on the technique that i'm using there to give a really nice complex sentence that begins this analysis for me okay so qualitative quantitative qualitative quantitative using commas to make that separation okay all right and now i can pick it up with canada okay so canada had the highest amount of exports in the beginning and this rose dramatically to okay so canada had the highest amount of exports in the beginning which obviously from my previous sentence the reader knows must be close to 20 million because that's the range that i gave so after a slight dip in 1986 it rose dramatically until 1988 okay so um canada had the highest amount of exports in the beginning and after a slight dip in 1986 wheat exports rose dramatically to 25 million tons by the year 1988. 1988 this was followed by a steep decrease to just or um so instead of always saying the amount so here so far i've mentioned the amounts so i said 25 million and then i can say um it decreased suddenly or a steep decrease to 1989 and instead of just mentioning the amount 15 million okay or 14 million to be more accurate um i can actually uh mention the difference by uh 11 million tons okay so just so you're not always repeating or you're not kind of boring the audience you don't have to say the amount that it stopped at but the difference between the previous okay so so this was followed by a steep decrease of 11 million tons in the next year and eventually a slight recovery by 1990 okay so here um one vocabulary that's useful is to recover so when you have a quick decrease and then you have an increase again you can say that wheat exports recovered okay it's like getting better from a sickness recovering your health we can use that also for these kinds of line grafts it's often used for example in the stock markets when the price of a stock loses value very quickly but then suddenly it starts to gain back some value we say that the stock recovered its value okay so that's a good piece of vocabulary there as well to recover okay so and eventually a slight recovery by 1990 okay all right so we have some good writing in the chat going on as well let me read a couple of those all right here we go so monica says clearly it increased from the year 1986 that is to 25 million tons but a year from that it fell by 11 million tons and recovered slightly in the final year monica not bad careful with word choice and grammar i know that's really challenging for these line graphs but just keep practicing okay diva says canada had the highest amount of wheat export which slightly decreased in 1986 and then significantly increased up to 25 million tons by 1988 in line graphs we can use the preposition divas by because it shows the continuity so by that time okay all right um and when you have a just a slight little change like this in the line um this little change it's good to use the verb dip okay like bloop dip dip down a little bit okay all right lydia says at closer observation uh canada exported 25 million tons of wheat by the year 1988 and a year later it started to decrease significantly by 11 million tons yeah we already know it's wheat exports so lydia careful not to over word okay careful with the wordiness all right students so now we're going to um uh go with the european communities okay that will be our second one here this green line so we're going to describe this pattern paying special attention to this part here as well so um here we go and we're always looking for comparisons and contrasts so 1980 european communities and canada look really similar right so initially in the first year the european communities now here okay i'm going to do a little bit of a trick because european communities is something that i don't want to keep writing over and over again so it's just too long for me it's too long words and it's eating up a lot of my time so if i'm in the computer-based exam i'm going to do this for sure hopefully in the paper-based exam you remember this early on so i'm just going to go ec now i have to be careful here because it's not the european union but it's the european communities which could be a different group of countries so i'm going to call it the ec now i don't have to write the word european communities over and over again i can just use the acronym ec which i clearly showed to my reader in the beginning okay and i can see a lot of people like yeah why didn't he do that why didn't he just go ec so let's do this we all live and learn right we all live and learn there is no perfect so initially in the first year the ec shows the ec wheat exports showed a similar pattern as canada let's do this with uh semicolon however comma however in the following well let's see in the following uh one two years it was stable and then it started to increase right and surpassing canada in 1989 okay so however in the following two years its exports were stable at uh let's see how many tons so stable at about 15 million tons 15 million tons and in 1988 it shot up surpassing canada in 1989 and eventually becoming the highest wheat exporting region by 1990 okay all right so that describes all of the european communities starting with this similar pattern making that comparison and then making that contrast of becoming stable and then describing this upward trend here surpassing canada in 1989 all right so far so good on says being the second greatest exporter in 1985 the ec shipped a shipment gradually fell if you don't need to say that again on if you said that the pattern is similar to canada's because it's understood right 2 million tons after 3 years however the figure rose dramatically surpassing canada by 1989 and ending up um almost triple i think you have some information mistakes there on you got to be a little bit careful it's not quite clear what's going on okay hud patel is asking what is the difference between mid and half okay um hat mid means the center okay so if i have the end point here the start here this is my midpoint okay um the only way we could describe this with the word half is halfway okay half otherwise refers to 50 of an amount okay so if you have a glass of water hat then the glass of water is half full okay half full so the glass of water is half full we wouldn't say that the glass of water is mid-fall that's just wrong english okay so half means 50 of the total volume um and mid means that it is at the uh divide dividing point between the two points okay that's the best way to think about it so midpoint half full okay if you think about it that way hopefully it makes more sense i know that varies from language to language okay so that was a good question um now we have australia remaining let's not forget about the land down under so australia we have a little bit of a different pattern in the first year but then we have uh this kind of gradual decrease over the following four years so again be careful not to run out of time the 20 minutes before you finish this so try to really pace yourself okay so um australia let's do this 1985 to 1986 and of course it surpasses the ec in that time because it's the only country that's actually increasing wheat exports in that first given year okay so australia showed where australia had an inverse trend to canada and the ec in the first year thereby surpassing slightly surpassing the ec however the amount of grain exports wheat is a type of grain so the amount of grain export in the four years following decreased gradually and ended at yeah i would say about 12 million tons okay ended at 12 million tons by 1990 making it the lowest exporting region at that time all right so that would be describing australia okay and i'm roughly at a good 190 words now which is great so for those of you looking for that band-aid band 9 this is where you want to be you want to be at about the 180 190 maybe 200 words at this point if you've run out of time fine okay uh just go on to task two if you have a minute left and a little bit of space left on your answer sheet then do write a summary summaries look really good for expository essays okay so the summary should be a piece of information that we learn through the analyses and is clearly visible in the graph okay so [Music] um what do we kind of learn by looking at this so after analyzing this and after looking at this in detail what do we learn from him so if we're in the business of agriculture export and import what do we kind of learn from this um from looking at this okay what can we pick up here so let's say i'm doing a presentation for a large grain export company what could i what could i say about this yeah so back john says canada exported the most in the time given okay yeah i would agree that's something interesting that we can learn about this during this given period yeah anything else there any other piece of information so um i would say that uh definitely the wheat exports among these regions change annually however all three regions maintain relatively high amount of exports okay because look they're all between like 12 and 25 million tons so they export a lot of wheat none of them kind of disappear or fall off the map here okay so oh it says the amount of wheat export shows disparity among these regions uh and canada overall still exports the most yeah that would be an okay summary so you could do that um so any of those are okay just add a little bit more flavor to your essay okay so this is what i would write um in summary these wheat exporting regions show variability annually nevertheless they all export millions of tons of this grain every year okay something like that all right doesn't have to be too fancy for the summary just something that we learned so in summary these wheat exporting regions show variability annually nevertheless they all export millions of tons of this grain every year okay and then if you wanted to get a little bit fancier you could say arguably canada being the dominant on average okay okay good uh let's read this let's sure let's make sure that it makes sense uh look for any kind of mistakes that we might have made and grammar punctuation especially in content don't make content mistakes if your content uh is incorrect you will lose more scores than for any other uh kind of criteria okay so here we go the given line graph depicts the wheat exports from three regions australia canada and the european communities here and after ec between 1985 and 1990 measured in millions of tons immediately it is evident that these three regions wheat exports had varying trends over the half decade period at the start of this time period in 1985 all three regions were in a similar range of wheat exports between 15 and 20 million tons canada had the highest amount of exports in the beginning and after a slight dip in 1986 wheat exports rose dramatically to 25 million tons by the year 1988 this was followed by a steep decrease of 11 million tons in the next year and eventually a slight recovery by 1990. initially in the first year the ec wheat exports showed a similar pattern as canada however in the following uh doubling up so that's my first correction there so however in the following two years its exports were stable at about 15 million tons and in 1988 it shot up surpassing canada in 1989 and eventually becoming the highest wheat exporting region by 1990 australian had inverse okay that's a word for mistakes let me just quickly correct that australia had an inverse trend to canada and ec in the first year thereby slightly surpassing the ec however the amount of grain export in the four years following decreased gradually and ended at 12 million tons by 1990 making the lowest exporting region at the time missing word let's fix that making it the lowest exporting region at that time in summary these wheat exporting regions show variability annually nevertheless they all export millions of tons of this grain every year all right okay that looks good i'm happy with it i can go on to task two now i've got my brain all warmed up for writing in english and i'm ready to tackle a persuasive essay and that's what we're going to do head patel there is no limit to how many sentences you can write in the overview it can be two three four depends on the question so we're ready to go to task two and we're going to do that tomorrow so uh tomorrow we will start task two in the members chat class and then we will finish it in the all chat class so tomorrow classes from 13 30 to 16 o'clock make sure you're there for lots more videos for original practice exams applications lots and lots of help visit us at aehelp.com for academic outs and
