HOW TO CUT VIDEO in DaVinci Resolve 17- Basic Video Editing Tips

hi i'm casey ferris i make videos on davinci resolve here on youtube and this is how you cut a video and by cut i mean both slice it like actually slice it as well as just you know how to make a basic cut like a basic edit in the video let's go here i am in resolve 17 and one of the biggest things that we need to do is cut a video so here's a piece of video and let's say we just want to split this in half we can do this a bunch of different ways in the edit page here i am here in the edit page one way is you can hit control backslash that's control and then the slash right under backspace on your keyboard and it will split the clip right here at the playhead so anytime you want to do that just control backslash and that will cut your clip you can also go up here to the toolbar and use the razor and click wherever you want to split the clip i don't generally do that just because it takes a second to kind of go up here and switch tools and switch back and everything what i like to do usually is just move my playhead around and kind of use that to like aim my knife right and then cut with control backslash and actually most of the time i remap control backslash to s on the keyboard you can do that by going up to davinci resolve up here in the upper left-hand corner and select keyboard customization and then under commands under all commands you can type split s-p-l-i-t and under timeline split clip you can just click here in this blank space and type s and that will map s to that same command you can hit save and close this and now anytime you hit s on the keyboard it will split the clip because of youtube search and clear communication and stuff like that if you're looking for a video about how to cut and resolve that could be one answer we also might be talking about cutting and pasting right so taking a clip like this and getting rid of it and moving it down somewhere like that that's just like in microsoft word it's select it hit ctrl x and then put your playhead wherever you want it to be hit ctrl v so that's control x for cut ctrl v for paste the other thing that you might mean is how to generally edit inside of resolve if you're not familiar with resolve at all i have a crash course right here you should definitely check that out but you know just just to give you a little idea if you are familiar with video editing just not how it works in resolve up here in the media pool this is where all of your media lives so any kind of footage or pictures or music or anything just lives up here it's kind of like a big bucket with all of your stuff and you actually put your sequence together down here in the timeline so you can take any clip from over here and you can just drag it into the timeline and that's where you can combine it with other shots if you need to make a clip shorter in the timeline you can grab the edge of it like this where the cursor turns into a bracket and you can shorten either side like this and grab it in the center and move it around audio works the same way here's some music move it around grab the edge like that and again just like we learned earlier you can hit control backslash and cut this at the playhead down here in the timeline that's where you actually build your movie and up here in the viewer is where people will see it sometimes you'll have two viewers like this this viewer on the left is just to preview stuff in here so you can just double click on something and kind of look at it before you add it to your project but this right hand viewer is always what your final project will look like if you want to adjust something about one of your clips you can select it here in the timeline and go up to the upper right hand corner and click on inspector and this is where you can adjust all kinds of things about your shot so you can zoom in move its position around rotate it that kind of thing you can also do things like crop stabilize add lens correction all that kind of stuff so there's a super super quick intro about just generally how editing works and resolve so if you're looking to cut and resolve you know you know you can you can do that also if you're looking for like how to cut up like how you know like the more experienced people like a term like an old term for making jokes and stuff well um all you have to do is have resolve open and you just i don't know you just tell a joke or something like what did the old sheep say to the young [Applause] [Music] sheep that is a good one [Laughter] uh sheep so that's how you do it hey if you want more videos like this make sure to subscribe okay if you don't then why did you if you don't like videos like this well i hope this would be a lesson to you to to never watch anything like this again there's more videos like this right here on davinci resolve 17 that's the newest version at this time of recording of the application called resolve it's for video editing you should check it out
