if you're editing videos in D Vinci resolve you already know just how powerful it can be but for some reason a lot of editors ignore the built-in effects that can make things quicker and more simple to do they can make it easier to repeat or copy and my personal favorite a lot of the effects are super easy on your computer compared to trying to do the same function in other ways so in this video I want to show you six functional built-in Da Vinci resolve effects that I use on every single project and after that I'll show you how you can customize them and make them easier to get to as well so secure the cup let's get into it IND Vinci resolve on the edit page if you're not seeing your effects panel you just need to click up at the top left where it says effects and it should show up on the left hand side now which effects you see in here are going to depend on whether you have the free version of resolve or you have the paid studio version however as as far as I'm aware all of the effects that I'm going to be talking about today are available in the free version so no need to worry let's kick things off with one of my favorites and potentially the most used of them all push you'll find this under video transitions category under the motion drop-down menu while this is technically a transition I mostly use it just to save me a ton of time on repetitive key framing for example one thing that I do pretty regularly is have a background push in from the left side followed by a title so all I'll do is drop the background and the title on top of each other in the timeline and shift the title so that it comes in a few frames after then I'll toss that push transition at the start of the background clip and customize the settings to my taste to access the settings you need to open your inspector in the top right make sure you're selected on the clip and choose either effect or in this case transition so typically I'll choose a length of about 12 frames and I'll set the alignment to start at the start of the clip you can choose which way you'd like the clip to push from so I'll click left here then I'll set the easing to both in and out so that it's a little bit smoother and that's it we've got options here for motion blur to add a colored border or a feathered border but I generally don't need those most of the time then what I'll do is highlight that transition hit command C to copy it make sure I click on the edge of that title so that it highlights in green and then hit command V to paste that same transition on on there as well then we've got that same push on the background and the title and I didn't have to do any key framing at all and I can easily copy and paste this to any other clip on my timeline title graphic whatever I want change a setting or two to make it work for that specific clip and then we're good to go next on the list is a similar effect because it's also a transition but used for a very different purpose and that is called The Edge wipe you can find it in the video transition under the wipe category at first The Edge wipe might look similar but instead of pushing the whole clip on from one side it reveals the clip from one side I use this a lot for before and after transitions for my photos or for color grading examples so if we grab a clip here and color grade it and then we cut it in half and disable all the color grading on the first half we can put that transition between the two of them and set it up how we wanted the controls are really similar to the push transition and I set it up in almost exactly the same way but instead of choosing Left Right top or bottom you set your starting Side by choosing a degree so the default of 0° will wipe from the bottom to the top and if we want it to go from left to right we choose an angle of 90° then we can just set our length again our easing and whether we want any kind of Border or not and Bam we have a transition this can also be applied to text or Graphics as an interesting way to make them appear instead of just suddenly popping on screen and again if we've got a bunch of similar Clips or before and afters or whatever we can copy and paste this super easily next we've got something that's a bit of a multi-tool and that is the adjustment clip you can find this under effects and that's it adjustment Clips are essentially blank clips that you can put on layers above your video and whatever you do to them will happen to everything below that clip so if you put an effect on them or you color grade them or if you use the transform functions everything below that will have that applied on it too I actually have a whole video on five different ways that you can use adjustment Clips but I'll show you probably my most used one here so let's put an adjustment clip above this clip here and I'm going to go to the start of it make sure the adjustment clip is selected then I'm going to go to my inspector and create a zoom key frame at the very start of the clip I'll hit shift in the right arrow 10 times each time I do that it moves the playhead over by 1 second so I'm 10 seconds later than I was before and it doesn't even really matter that the adjustment clip isn't that long then I'm going to type in 1.2 in zoom and it's going to automatically create a key frame where the playhead is the reason that I do this is because then I have a constant Zoom that I can copy and paste anywhere and it will be up to 10 seconds long depending on how long I make that adjustment clip any static shots that feel like they could use a little bit of movement I can just hold option drag this over to top and then resize the clip to fit and I'm done next we've got a classic one called drop shadow and it pretty much does what it says on the tint if I want something to pop off the background a little bit some drop shadow will usually do the trick you can find this under open effects under resolve effects styliz so for example if I've got a graphic or some text on a white background I'll toss the drop shadow effect on it and it will add a shadow behind that to make it look like it's hovering over the background a little little bit we've got four main controls for drop shadow strength which is how intense the shadow is angle which is the direction that the shadow will be going distance which is how far it will be from the source and blur which is how hard or soft the edge of the Shadow is going to be so we can dial all of this into taste and the best part is that we can copy these settings to other Clips what I mean by that is for example if we're using text there is technically a way to add a drop shadow right in the settings of the text but there's no good way to copy those settings to other text Clips or to other clips that aren't text either and there are some other limitations like for example if I've used Fusion to animate the text the shadow doesn't necessarily always go with it depending on how you do it but when I use the drop shadow effect I don't have any of those issues I can command C to copy and option V to paste ATT tributes and choose plugins I can even select a bunch of Clips at the same time and paste to all of them if if I want making it super easy to add a bunch of the same drop shadow to a bunch of different clips the next effect is called camera shake you can find it under open effects and resolve effects transform and I use it for two different reasons mostly the first is basically to do what the name suggests if I have a static tripod shot that I want them look a bit more like it was handheld by adding a bit of camera Shake I can just drag the effect on there and Bam we've got more camera Shake there are so many different things that you can tweak in the settings here but the main two that I use are at the top called motion scale and speed scale generally if I just want a tiny bit of motion I'll dial these Back to. 2 or3 each and that usually does the trick the other thing that I use these for is to add a bit of motion to Graphics that I have floating in and out of the screen for explainer videos for example maybe I'll use the push transition to get the logo on the screen and then a little drop shadow and and then I'll add the camera shake at 2 for both motion and speed scale maybe another push at the end to have it exit the screen and it will look something like [Music] this the next effect that we have is one that I only found recently but I've been using a whole bunch and it's called blanking fill you can find it in open effects under resolve effect stylize you know when you have a frame that you want to show but maybe it comes from a vertical video or it's a photo that doesn't take up the whole screen so you do that thing where you duplicate it and on the layer Beneath You blur it out and you darken it down a bit and then you zoom it way in so that it fills up the rest of the screen this effect does all of that automatically so if we grab a photo or video and we throw it on our timeline and add the blanking fill effect technically you could be done here but we've also got some options too first off you can choose how it fills the space it defaults to stretch but I prefer Zoom since stretch can look kind of of strange then if we go to source and open up the drop down I usually set all the crop settings to zero so it doesn't crop any of the image you can choose to blend the edges of your image if you want you can choose how much blur you want in the background how much you want the background to be faded if you leave the fade color as white it gets brighter as it fades or you can choose something like black or a color that will work better for whatever the image is that you have on screen and it even has a built-in drop shadow if you want the main image to pop off that blurred out background and finally there's a global blend that is kind of like an opacity slider for that background it's so much easier than doing it all manually now in case you didn't already know I want to show you how you can make getting to all of these effects so much more easy first off I highly recommend getting used to using the search bar at the top of the effects panel to find things instead of just scrolling down and having to know which category everything's in but once you found the effect that you like you can also click the little star beside it and it'll add it to your favorites and with the two effects that I mentioned that are transitions once you've set them up with the settings that you like you can right click on the transition and choose create transition preset give it a name and now it will show up under Transitions and user we can add these specific ones to our favorites and then we have a super easy way to access them let me know down in the comments which one of these effects you think that you'll use the most and if I went too fast at any point or you have questions feel free to watch the video again or leave a comment with your question down below and I'll try my best to help thank you so much for watching liking and subscribing and I'll see you next time
