[Music] hello welcome back to city planner place where we are building clearwater county and in this episode we are going to finish our work on the highway what you see here is we have our roundabout on the highway that connects these two highways it's been working fine but it it it breaks down from time to time this is a system level interchange as opposed to the service interchanges that we created in ashland so we have one service interchange by walmart and another service interchange by the torgusons and what a service interchange is is it's an interchange that connects the highway to a local road or you know a minor highway and a system interchange connects two major highways to one another so there should be a free flow movement through here which you kind of get here but it's kind of broken and uh so that's why we're going with a trumpet in this particular location so this trumpet uh is named because it looks like a trumpet so take a look at this image of a trumpet at interstate 41 at wisconsin 441 in ottawa county and you can see that it's clearly trumpet shaped and that's why where it gets its name from now we're going to build a diverging diamond interchange right here now the reason we're building the divergent diamond right here is a diverging diamond is a service interchange so like i said that's a an interchange that connects a major highway with another type of highway or roadway so the wisconsin department of transportation defines a diverging diamond interchange as an interchange based on a standard diamond with a shift in highway traffic within the interchange to safely and efficiently accommodate high volume left turn movements like you might see going to belmont so within this type of interchange the traffic briefly shifts to the left side of the road to allow that left-hand turn movement to occur an example of this is at east avalon road and i-39 in janesville if you were to progress through avalon you would be forced to temporarily switch sides of the road any other movement either from the interstate onto avalon avalon onto the interstate the interstate onto the interstate you would be switching sides of the road and it would be a fairly seamless movement minimal slowdown minimal conflicts and that's one of the places where the diverging diamond excels there are very few conflict points in comparison to a traditional diamond interchange look at this image from the federal highway administration a conventional diamond interchange has a total of 26 conflict points where the diverging diamond has 14 and only two of those conflict points are crossing which is where some of the most dangerous sorts of accidents can happen so we're going to build that here and it might be overdoing it and i get that but from time to time you will see that projects are over engineered because they are earmarks and that's we're going to claim that this is so we are going to build a phenomenal diverging diamond interchange right here and i think that's where i want to start this is a fairly complicated interchange and it's going to require that we divert some traffic so what we're going to do is create a road connecting over here we're going to just disconnect this now this is inconvenient for folks in belmont but it's not catastrophic and i would expect that there would be some consternation about this but it's okay they're gonna they're gonna have to deal with and i'm not gonna wholesale eliminate that old road we're just gonna cut it off for a minute okay so we're gonna start with our bridge connection here i'm gonna go about 26 feet up i think that's about what i need to be able to make it across the highway then i'm going to leave a gap here for the merge to occur when we uh what do we call that go six units and you can see i i have anarchy on and i have my road bending off and then this will be where we descend down and we'll make our merge into our highway so why don't we select a four-lane highway we'll go 13-ish here and we'll drop that down to zero right there perfect and we'll probably have to change all of this later so uh don't i'm not going to be overly concerned with that okay so now we have two of the movements that are gonna be really important next we need to think about the movements that are gonna get us from this road over to the highway i really love to have a nice angle coming in here so i'm backing that out so i can create nodes for my angle and what i'm trying to do so i'm gonna take this up and let's see 55 degrees and we'll get that to line up nicely do the same thing here 55 degrees we'll line that up with our guideline there and then we can make a road connection and then we'll make our other connections here and then one final connection onto the interstate let's see we will make this eight units it might be different on our ends here just because highways are different now we need to clean this up a little bit okay this was an absolute disaster to put together but it's looking we've got the bones of it here so what i'm gonna do is build out i'm gonna upgrade our roads so they're in the right direction then we're gonna copy this we're not gonna spend time trying to get this right on two sides that's way too much work we're not no we're we're not doing that so if you were coming off the highway here you could either head down head straight one movement that i'm struggling to see oh no this is this is the right way so i think that we've got this all straightened out now so you could either come across here go down here one movement that we don't have is is a u-turn i don't know how absolutely critical that movement is to facilitate i don't think that i'm going to focus on that movement so we've got some use of it already and what i want to do rather than trying to do all of this work again because it's quite a lot we're just gonna go ahead and use move it to copy this so i'm just gonna use shift select all of my segments i will use my duplicate tool you can alt click or do this rotate it around spin back around here boom right in place and now all we have to do is recreate this bridge and we should be good to go okay so we've got a lot of work to do to make this thing look nice but the bones are in place and i'm pleased with how it turned out one thing i i'm not in love with is i have an extra note here on both sides i think i'm going to eliminate that note i added it but i don't think it's necessary so we'll get rid of that node that cleans it up nicely now we're going to come through here and smooth and smooth things out a little bit and i would assume that all of this would you know they would we would be raising the ground up here uh rather than trying to have bridge structures across this whole thing so i'm going to come through node controller make a couple of quick changes now one of the things that i learned in the discord server thank you discord server is that if i hold down the shift button i can click on these and align my edges and it didn't it didn't do what i wanted to do that's unfortunate that is because i chose the wrong one i want to align my edges in here and i just get a nicer connection you can see that's already made quite the difference so there are a few things that we're going to need to do now uh i want to go through here and i think that we need to add some some more lanes across these bridges i think it's just not going to function as well without it and part of that is there's going to be weaving movements through the bridge then so let's avoid that the other thing i want to do is smooth out some of these angles you could tighten these up we know that this is a right hand movement so why not really tighten that movement up we might have wanted to do this before just so that they're even but i don't think it's i don't think it's that big of a deal for them to be a little bit different i'm adding kind of a sweeping movement there to facilitate a faster turn so that is much better in my opinion now i want to go through here and do a little bit of lane marking so we're going to take care of that right now so i am going to save the chevron as a template let's see if i can actually make it happen okay so i got the template to work it's a little messy but it works uh so basically i can apply that now but it's yeah i i'm not sure how much i'm going to use that if i'm being completely honest okay so right there is actually the diverge and it's interesting i've actually seen some inappropriate movements through here so one of the things i learned from the discord server is that i've been using chevrons all wrong so i want to give a bunch of credit where it's due so this is actually from one of our discord moderators dottybot and they created this graphic that i think perfectly illustrates the way that chevrons should be placed so thank you so much for putting this together and uh we're gonna get these chevrons pointing in the direction of traffic [Music] okay so we're almost done with this one but i'm noticing that there are some things happening with our lane switching that we absolutely do not want to happen so i'm going to go into traffic manager and take a look at this what you can see is that you could switch back and do a u-turn that is not a legal movement in one of these so we're going to get rid of that movement here we're going to make sure that people are only going in the direction that they're supposed to go and we're not gonna loop back around here we're gonna have to do something very similar for the other ones we'll worry about that when the time comes so i think we're looking good here and you can see they are using it inappropriately they are using it inappropriately and let's get this lane marked up too and just like that magic we are done with our lane marking we should make sure that we don't have any strange movements occurring in here though which i do i do see we are facilitating that u-turn if someone wanted to make it this is a place where i think we have some movements that we do not want there you go we were forcing people into here and that's why they were doing some wonky stuff do the same thing over here okay so i think we're mostly set up here we're going to just want to do a little bit of cleanup and that again is working with our sloped no slope mode okay so i think that's looking pretty darn good we need to do now is connect up our highway to our old road i think we're going to use the curve road tool for that we'll use our road guideline and make that connection and what we're eventually going to do is taper this off so we'll make that connection then we'll discontinue this one actually we're going to leave this the time being this will be for the second phase in our project what i do want to do though is use the node tools i'm going to give that shift a try yeah that's not doing what i what i wanted to do so i think we're going to reset this now every now and then you realize that you made a fundamental mistake in understanding what someone meant when they were talking to you and right now is one of those times i know exactly when i am supposed to use the tool that i was just trying to use and it is not now so we will uh we'll get to that in a minute there we go we have a nice merge down neck down of our highway and you could now make this movement between these different highway directions no problem so our diverging diamond is mostly done we do have some signal controls to worry about so we're going to set up some time traffic lights and we will see if this is a horrible decision so those are the two spots the conflict points where you need to have those so i'm going to go into here and i'm going to control click this traffic light then i'm going to set up a timed traffic light here and then we'll add a junction right there i don't know that it's set it up for me [Music] so control click so for whatever reason my traffic lights aren't showing up here and i'm wondering if it is a node length issue so we're gonna shift this ever so slightly see if that improves things for us it is not interesting they are over here but only at a couple of the junctions okay so i figured out the problem and i don't love the solution but we're gonna go for it they want these this node needs to be a little bit bigger right here and if it's not bigger i don't get a traffic light oh that is very frustrating very very frustrating indeed so over here i was able to get my traffic lights on one part of the road but not the other and really this is going to be using move it to totally break my interchange which stinks but you've got to do what you've got to do to make it work there you go there's my traffic lights i'm a little disappointed in that but it's it's okay we did spend a lot of time getting to be perfect at least we have moved it otherwise we would be in a real rough spot and you can see that now we have our traffic lights we've also got a mess let's clean this up just a bit again oh and again we don't have our full spectrum of traffic lights that is driving me absolutely batty there we go just a little nudge all right let's see how bad this messes things up here not bad but we do need to lower our highway so we're deviating from what i hope to do a bit but it's for the greater good we're not gonna we're not gonna play with this okay so we almost have all of our lights i do see that there's one more missing there we go all of our lights finally so now let's set up our time traffic lights okay so i want this to be on along with this we'll do a minimum time of let's say 10 and a max of 20. that's our first phase for some reason i can't set up the automatic so we're gonna have to play with this a bit and then we'll add another step and then that one it'll be it'll be exactly the opposite there we go looks like it's working so the other thing we're gonna want to do is add some yield signs and i want yields to occur from inside of the interchange there we go so that should do the trick i think just a little bit more sloping to clean things up after our little issue that we had there and then i think i'm gonna go through and manually modify a couple of these heights because it seems like they're just a little bit off arbitrarily just the rams a little bit off okay and yep i tried to fix it and then it did not like it okay so we're just gonna leave that we're gonna let good enough be good enough and not let perfect be the enemy of good this is a little bit off i would love to this to clean this up it's probably not worth it it's going to work and function appropriately and we had to modify some things to get the lights to work it was 100 perfect and i'll have to keep that in mind that will that that will be what gives me peace at night that i had this perfect at one point in time and the game the game is what robbed that from me [Music] okay so one down and one to go just a couple of it seems like there are a couple of weird spots where you see we've got kind of a lump here and i'm trying to figure out if we miss sloping anything i don't see it which to me means that i need to go through here select this node and select this one and raise it up like that yeah that does the trick that was the issue much better it's a trumpet time what we're going to do to keep this thing moving i think we're going to just add a road down here very temporarily and these are the sorts of bypasses that you sometimes see get built during these significant projects and now this entire interchange could be demolished if we wanted to because this movement is still facilitated it's an ugly movement but it still works okay so for this trumpet what i think is going to be most helpful will be to create basically a copy of this with just regular roads so there we go that is our interchange right that's our our roadway what we're going to do is we're going to split this off and then again raise this up let's see if we can do 20 if that works nope 26 feet nope 30. oh you know what my fault 23 we can do 23. so we need two bridges to go across here perfect and then we need our access roads as well so we're going to create those we could just run those all the way across if we wanted to so i just wanted to be able to mirror these so i created another road here and this will be my highway access at at some point in time so this road right here is going to come curve around here and this one is actually going to come out here eventually so let's see if we can use some of our fancy new tools and what i want to do is click connect connect this to this so we're going to control that's wrong that's far too much we'll hit minus and see if we can tighten this thing up hmm does not like it at all okay so what that tells me is that this is not tight enough so i'm just coming here and clicking the edge that i want then i can i'm gonna have to extend this out just a bit further there we go we're looking a little better now i want to keep this nice and tight so what i think we're going to do is we'll say 30 meters well 40. well we'll give it more space so that we are able to uh have a bit nicer of a movement a little bit faster that's the primary reason why you'd be concerned about that that that radius there okay so we want to have another movement that's very similar so i'm going to find this road guy line right here and it's the intersection of these two and i'm gonna curve this back around i'm just gonna follow this at this point now we'll use my curved road tool to line this up and make a nice connection so we've got our connection there [Music] and truthfully we could bring this in as close as we wanted to as close as we want to just leave it right there we will extend this out [Music] there we go so the other consideration is going to be getting this straight here [Music] there we go so that is about the connection we want let's get this all upgraded to our highway roads okay so now i've mostly got this in a good place we do need to do a little bit of work with our slopes but in general i'm pretty pleased you can see it doesn't take much to get this absolutely perfect there we go so i think we have our trumpet mostly set up at this point we're gonna what we're gonna want to do is go ahead and upgrade these particular portions of our road to be tulane which is gonna mirror what the rest of our highway looks like in just a moment i think we're ready for our temporary disconnection here this would be a painful disconnection for all involved so temporarily we're going to have a little bit of ugliness and disconnect our highway which i'm sure is making everyone thrilled this kind of highway shutting this down for any length of time would be absolutely catastrophic and i'm sure that people would be losing their jobs because of this so what i'm going to do is i'm going to try to stretch this to make it work okay so there is a lot of stuff happening right here but i think it's gonna work out okay we just need to get a couple of markings in okay we've got a little bit of ugliness here but i think we're gonna settle for this for now and maybe come back another time and get this fixed up what is more troubling to me is that we have a couple of junctions where you could make inappropriate turning movements so we're gonna fix that right now okay so we're mostly repaired there and we still have we've cut it off we've broken our cardinal rule and we have absolutely left everyone high and dry which is unfortunate and sad but i think we almost had to in this situation unless we would have brought this out a little bit further which maybe i should have done but i didn't and at this point there's no going back so we're just gonna have to go for it [Music] again we'll use node controller to get things looking a little bit more even and then we'll clean it up with our lane marking [Music] we need to get our roads in the right direction and we're missing one more movement through here that we're gonna need to add and that is the movement back this other way around okay that is perfect i do want to turn on our terrain we're starting to work our way up the mountain the wrong way so what we're going to do is we're going to need to turn that back around very quickly and again so we get our lane switching correct i think that we're going to taper down which is going to help out quite a great deal so interestingly we had a couple of oddities here so we're going to rebuild this okay i think we're all set up here so we're going to want to make sure we got one more spot here for lane markings and then we've got some cleanup okay so the very last thing we're going to do is go ahead and slope these out and with that you can see that things are running again that is great news we do have a little bit of traffic manager stuff to do we've got things like that u-turn right there that we don't want that to happen okay now you see that things are moving pretty good which is making me quite happy we're gonna eliminate this movement because it's no longer needed i think just for the sake of the look of things we're going to extend this out to the bridge there we go that's oh oh there we go we got a problem so one last fix there we go now we're good move this over just a little bit there's a little bit of an oddity with that ramp so we'll take care of that we see that things are moving as they should we did not get this sloped out though so i do want to feather this a bit pull this out make it look a little bit more natural because that sort of grading would have quite clearly occurred at time of project honestly feels like there's kind of an unlimited amount of this lane marking that you could do but we're gonna we're gonna cut it off right here because you've got to cut it off at some point so right here we do want to make an expansion of this road all the way out to here and this is one of the few things i think i'm going to pause it for because i think i'm going to ruin a whole bunch of power lines and we know that that's not something i would do by choice so it's gonna upgrade this eminent domain and some landscaping in front of that lovely truck stop and then i will make my connections for my transmission lines so this in and of itself might have been a project killer i can't imagine this going over well needing to move a bunch of transmission lines but we're going to we're just going to overlook that one thing just that one small thing and then i just want to check my work because i already see a couple of things like right here i can see that i missed lane marking and actually i didn't miss it it just changed okay now i think that we're moving we've got some kind of strange stuff happening here and i'm not sure exactly why they're stopping my guess is that it's this junction control stuff yeah and you can see that there are some junction control issues that we might want to take care of we also got kind of an ugly bend here so just that the kind of small stuff that makes a big difference and that's the kind of thing that gets our traffic flowing again look at this interesting lots of this is a heavy movement there we go i feel like we have really done a good job of making this a more smooth flowing highway i do want to stretch this one out a bit that is much better much much much better so if we wanted to add a kind of a merging merging lane we could do that and that's actually what that shift node connection is for and that would have made this a better connection we might need to add a ramp here in the future but with all of this movement stuff happening we're going to need to spend some time on that so things appear to be moving let's see how our traffic looks 77 quite the improvement we were at 71 at the start of this now i know that there are some small issues here particularly with our time traffic lights i think we might need to work on that or with our lack thereof uh we might need to work on that in the future and some of this might clear out naturally as things improve i did say i wanted to show you one more thing and we are gonna do that so right here you see that there's some weird lane shifting and what we're gonna do is take this hold our shift click on this click on this and it's actually going to scoot the road over so that it lines up now you see we have a nice edge here so that's what people were trying to tell me in the comments that i was not getting [Laughter] but i got it now it really does a nice job of making this feel like that's the through movement down there you do this same thing here you see that that shifts it over ever so slightly and now it feels like that's a merge lane which is a nice improvement [Music] that's that's great that's that's really good a couple of weird things here we're gonna fix this is obviously how it's done in the real world we just we just uh make sure that we've got our nodes in place and then when we need to we use move it that's nice that see this this is this is the kind of little thing that i think adds a lot and that is a significant improvement here in terms of overall aesthetics we should also use node controller to give some sweeping movements here since we have so much truck traffic here that would be another thing to think about allow a more significant turning radius here which will improve uh the accessibility for trucks and it'll also just make it a better a better movement if you want to maintain speed so i think we're in a good spot i think this calls for a brief city tour [Music] i hope you've liked this video if you did hit the like
